Anna Ghannamová
Anna Ghannamová will no longer be working as a moderator of the Klub 3 program on Slovak television's TA3 channel. TA3 director Michal Guèík made the decision after complaints were made against the moderator by two political party chairs who were guests of the program, Anna Belousovová (Nation and Justice - Národ a spravedlnost) and Nora Mojsejová (Free Speech - Svobodné slovo).
The live discussion with the extra-parliamentary politicians was fractious from the start because Ghannamová wanted them to answer questions about their parties' operations. That line of questioning was primarily directed at Mojsejová, but not only at her. For the most part, the politicians did not answer the moderator's questions, instead saying what they considered appropriate, and the moderator interrupted them more than usual in pursuit of answers, which sparked even more tension. The broadcast (in Slovak only) is available for viewing at http://www.ta3.com/clanok/8252/klub-z-24-januara-mojsejova-budaj-belousova-matovic.html .
The discussion came to a head when Ghannamová raised the question of social welfare for the poor. Mojsejová said Romani people should be deprived of welfare, and Belousovová said Romani people were "parasites".
Ghannamová pointed out to Belousovová that she shouldn't generalize because 60 % of Romani people living in Slovakia are integrated and even the rest cannot be spoken of overall as "parasites". She also said that not only Romani people are dependent on social welfare, so that it would be better to speak of people who are "materially dependent" than of Romani people: "Let's speak of those who are materially dependent, please, let's not talk about the Roma, because there really is no data in this country that might even give us statistics about Romani people receiving state aid for those in material distress".
Speaking to the media after the program aired, Ghannamová said racism is illegal. "If a politician sends out racist cues, it is a journalist's obligation to draw the line. If the politician crosses the line and the journalist doesn't prevent it, he or she is not in the right job," Ghannamová said.
Slovak news server Topky.sk has reported that when the live broadcast was over, all three women had a glass of wine and continued their discussion off the record. Mojsejová is said to have vulgarly verbally attacked both the moderator and her political rival, Ján Budaj, with whom she had clashed during the broadcast over vulgarities in her electoral campaign video.
"I called him and her both c**ts. She got rid of herself through her lack of professionalism. She just wanted to get rid of me. She just wanted to make a total c**t of me, but she made one of herself," Mojsejová said of the moderator.
