Sorry about the confusion, folks. I had the Yahoo calendar set up
wrong and it sent out an announcement about a non-existent meeting.

To clarify, there is no RMM General meeting on Thursday (especially
not at the Brighton Library). We do have informal meet-ups at the
Little Cafe every Thursday at 6, however.

Um, actually there IS something happening on Friday.

It's opening night at ImageOut, the 17th year of Rochester's gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/queer/whatever film festival. This has become one of the oldest and most respected festivals of its type in the nation. On several occasions, award-winning films (Little Miss Sunshine) that have later played the Little or other art houses have received their Rochester premiere at ImageOut. A number of this year's films (as always) have won awards at mainstream festivals such as Sundance, Berlin, Tribeca, Seattle, and Atlanta. These dramatic, comic and documentary features and shorts come from places as diverse as Korea, Mexico, France, Argentina, Iceland, Spain, Sweden and Buffalo.

You can bet there will be a lot of skin, or more (a few even come with warnings for the squeamish). And plenty of coming-of-age and gender bending angst. But there is a documentary about housing the elderly, archival Hollywood horror films, a dramatic reenactment (by John Hurt) of Englishman Quentin Crisp's stay in New York and a really gory zombie film. Among many others (45 programs).

If you've never been to ImageOut ("Um, I really didn't intend to be here, I thought this was the line for the new Tarantino flick!"), you might have a very pleasant surprise at the quality of the offerings. After seventeen years, they seem to be doing something right. Only three programs are sold out so far. Check it out, programs run daily through October 18th. Venues are the Little (1), the Dryden, the Cinema, and Ingle Auditorium at RIT. There are also special guests, a linked art exhibit at Visual Studies Workshop, an opening night party at Eros and a closing night party at Tribeca.

“Griots” means stories. “Aging Trees of Knowledge” is a series of
films by Adrian Esposito that tell the stories of actual people and
events. “Command of Sankofa, Servant Leader” tells the stories of
various Rochester residents including that of the Rochester youth in
the 1960’s who, under the guidance of Dr. David Anderson, noted
storyteller and black historian, take on the challenge of lead paint
that continues to be a problem in many inner cities.

Filmmaker Adrian Esposito is a 2008 graduate of the Monroe #1 BOCES
EMCC Radio & Television Broadcasting program in Rochester, N.Y. As a
child, Adrian was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a disability on
the Autism spectrum of disorders. Despite the challenges he faced, he
began to take animation and filmmaking classes at Animatus Studio in
Rochester NY when he was 12 years old. He progressed from animation to
filmmaking and now has several film projects to his credit.

Holy cow, I didn't know about the Jackie Brown / Robert Forster event.
  That's actually worth going to.

Any objections to moving the RFL meeting to October 14?

I'm going away for the weekend, so I'm trying to get a jump on this now.

So far for next week, Kim Lesslie has some items to share.

I may show Virgin Fang, which I've been editing for Mike Russo.

Anyone else? Maybe we could see some rough footage from one of
Derrick's projects?

I think this would be a good month to screen RIP! A Remix Manifesto.
I saw this doc at the last Rochester High Falls Film Festival, and it
struck me as a good film to share with the group. It's a look at
remixing -- taking audio and video, mashing it up into something new,
and sharing with the public. It touches on issues of copyright,
public domain, creative commons, etc.

I've got the DVD and we can watch it this Wednesday on the Animatus
big screen. 7pm, 34 Winthrop Street.

Also, I've got Mind Rip zombie footage. Mmmmm... brains.

===============

Immerse yourself in the energetic, innovative and potentially illegal
world of mash-up media with RiP: A remix manifesto. Let web activist
Brett Gaylor and musician Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk,
serve as your digital tour guides on a probing investigation into how
culture builds upon culture in the information age.

Biomedical engineer turned live-performance sensation Girl Talk, has
received immense commercial and critical success for his mind-blowing
sample-based music. Utilizing technical expertise and a ferocious
creative streak, Girl Talk repositions popular music to create a wild
and edgy dialogue between artists from all genres and eras. But are
his practices legal? Do his methods of frenetic appropriation embrace
collaboration in its purest sense? Or are they infractions of creative
integrity and violations of copyright?

You be the judge by watching RiP: A remix manifesto.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the Mind Rip zombie shoot Sunday
night! My feet and fingers are still pruny, my voice is hoarse, and
I've got blood and dirt in places you don't want to know about.

We had more than two dozen eager zombie volunteers. They were made up,
slapped with mud, and told to walk through tall weeds in pouring rain.
And they kept coming back for more. What's wrong with these people?

I saw the footage today, and it rocks! We got shots that any big
budget production would be jealous of. It's really gratifying to see
what we can do with a little talent, some elbow grease, and buckets of
enthusiasm.

Special thanks go out to our make-up crew, headed by Terry and Mary,
who made a little foundation go a long way. Thanks also to the
gentlemen of the West Webster Fire Department and the staff of
MacGregor's who put up with our shenanigans.

We have a few more scenes to shoot before the promotional trailer will
be edited and made public. In the meantime, I plan to post some
behind-the-scenes stills and video soon.

To stay up to date with the project, become a fan of Mind Rip on
Facebook here: http://bit.ly/o5sbf

If you have any snapshots or video from Sunday night, feel free to
post them on our wall!

Fleetwood

A childhood love story set in the 1920’s, Fleetwood features the
youngest of young lovers, CoCo and Evan. Antoinette, CoCo’s mother,
indulges her only child, a seven year-old who possesses a prophetic
gift inherited from her grandmother. Evan, a musical prodigy whose
future is being mapped out by his mother, Cleo, is devoted to CoCo in
his own way.

In the garden of their country estate, Antoinette and Thad, CoCo’s
parents, invite Evan’s parents and other guests to a noontime meal on
a mid-summer Sunday afternoon.

After a hearty toast, and during a splendid meal, the children’s
parents observe their ease with one another. CoCo and Evan, who grew
up together, have come to know each other well in their short lives.

During the meal, Antoinette confides to Thad and Evan’s parents that
CoCo secretly hopes to marry Evan someday and that it may be more than
just a childhood whim. Cleo’s objections threaten to disrupt the
occasion though the children remain unaffected by anything that might
dampen their happiness.

A story about the earliest yearning for love and how seeds of undoing are cast.

ROCHESTER HIGH FALLS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
INTRODUCES ONLINE SHORT FILM COMPETITION

First “HF3 Shorts” Theme will Celebrate Rochester’s 175th Anniversary

The Rochester High Falls International Film Festival team is working
hard on broadening the organization’s mission and scope.  Our first
step is establishing a year-round presence with a short film contest,
that focuses on a new theme every other month.   “HF3 Shorts” will
offer cash and movie screenings as prizes for unique digital movies
three minutes or shorter in length.  “The filmmaking talent in the
Rochester region is remarkable,” said John Richardson, the Festival’s
executive director. “This new online short-film contest is just one
more way we can support and encourage new and existing filmmakers –
year-round.”

For the contest’s premiere, the Festival has partnered with the City
of Rochester and announced its first theme, “Coming Home: Rochester’s
175th Anniversary.”  Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy is helping to
encourage participation via a video running on our website
(www.rochestermoviefest.com), and is planning his own short film
entry.  “The Film Festival’s new contest provides us with the perfect
opportunity to ask Rochesterians to share their stories about our home
town,” Mayor Duffy said.

Deadline for entries of the first contest is Sept. 25,
2009. The winning film will premiere at the 175th Anniversary Gala on
October 3rd, and be screened at the 2010 Rochester High Falls
International Film Festival.  All short films submitted to the contest
will be viewable on our website and on YouTube.  The winner of each
contest will also win $1,000.

For each contest, all entries will be judged by an expert panel led by
renowned local film critic, Jack Garner.  “The late Orson Wells said,
near the end of his life, that the day is coming, thanks to the ease
of today’s hands-on technology, when anybody can make a movie. The
challenge is to make them good,” Garner said. “That’s your challenge
if you’d like to be part of the High Falls Film Festival’s shorts
program. I hope entries will cause me to bring my Number-10 rating out
of retirement!”

For more information about the contest, including
submission rules and contest themes, visit our website
http://www.RochesterMovieFest.com. The contest introductory videos
were created by a talented team from Crystal Pix. The website, created
by Animatus Studio, will feature video links to all entries of each
contest.

Meet Our New Festival Team

As most of you may know by now, we have a new team here at The
Festival.  We are all impatiently awaiting the exciting new paths this
energetic duo will lead us on.  In the meantime, here’s their back
story…

John Richardson (Executive Director) is a Co-Founder of the Rochester/
High Falls International Film Festival. He served as Board Chair for
most of the Festival's history prior to becoming Executive Director.
In a previous life, he was the Director of New York Public Affairs for
Eastman Kodak Company.  His responsibilities included lobbying and
public relations initiatives with the state and local governments, and
community-interest groups in the greater Rochester area. John was the
company liaison for economic development initiatives, environmental
issues, charitable contributions, workforce training, real estate, tax
negotiations, and the arts.  In prior positions, John was Controller
of Kodak's Lincoln Plant, Manager of Operations for the Federal
Systems Division, and Director of the Federal Government Marketing
organization where he managed a $250M business selling commercial
products to the Federal government.  John was also the Marketing
Manager for the first digital camera and digital printer.  John is
active in the Rochester community and currently serves on the Boards
of WXXI Public Broadcasting Council, Pathstone Advisory Panel, and
volunteers for Junior Achievement.

Linda Moroney (Managing Director) has been active in the independent
film community for over 10 years. Films she's produced have shown
theatrically, been broadcast nationally, and screened at numerous film
festivals worldwide.  Prior to becoming our Managing Director, Linda
served at the Technical Director and Shorts Co-Programmer for the
festival.   In 2007, she was the Curator for Animated Jazz Shorts from
The Hubley Studio, which was a Co-presentation by the Rochester
International Jazz Festival, Rochester/High Falls International Film
Festival, and George Eastman House. Linda cut her filmmaking teeth
working with Academy Award winner, Faith Hubley, on six of her
animated films.  In addition, Linda was the Associate Producer on the
independent feature-length documentary, RAM DASS  FIERCE GRACE named
by Newsweek magazine as one of the five best non-fiction films of
2002, and broadcast nationally on PBS in 2004. Recently, she directed
the documentary short, STREET EATS, which debuted at The Kansas City
Film Festival.  She has also produced several other short films
including Emily Hubley's award-winning SET SET SPIKE (2001), which was
an official selection in the 2002 Sundance Festival. Linda is a
founding member of Women in Film & Television Rochester. She is
currently in pre-production on THE STORYBOOK PROJECT, her first
documentary feature film as director.

ABOUT THE ROCHESTER HIGH FALLS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL:

Film Festival has become one of the leading cultural events in
Rochester and the surrounding region, boosting tourism with attendees
who spend an estimated $1 million in and around the downtown festival

The Warriors of the Sun (95')

In Spanish and Totonac with English subtitles

Ivan, a young Totonac Indian from a remote community in Eastern
Mexico, has a vision in which Jesus appears to him as a green snake,
and takes him to meet God. God tells him he must vow to revive Los
Voladores ("the flyers"), a 2000 year-old ritual in which four men
"fly" from an 80' pole after a fifth, on the top, offers his heart to
the Sun.

Ivan asks Salvador, the old "capitan" of the Voladores, to teach him
and his friends the ritual, and Salvador agrees. Bruno, one of the
friends, visits the ruins of El Tajin, the ancient Totonac capital,
where he discovers that the Voladores ritual was inherited from his
ancestors.

On his return, Ivan, Bruno, and their friends select a sacred
"Flowering Tree" to cut down for their pole, and Salvador teaches them
the steps and meaning of the ritual. They raise a 30' high practice
pole, and, totally terrified, make their first, hilarious "flight".

After more practice, and various adventures, they are ready for the
real thing. At midnight mass Christmas Eve the priest blesses them and
they dance around the altar. The next day they fly from the 80' pole
in the churchyard, to the applause of a large crowd of onlookers.

An old Totonac tells how once upon a time the Voladores flew away.
While they were gone, the mayor chopped up the pole, so when they
returned they had nowhere to land. So the turned into birds, and flew
up to heaven.

This is a roughcut, the first "public" screening.  I'm looking for
very critical feedback as to what works and what doesn't, and what may
be missing.
