Subject: DemNotes: Please Join Me Thursday and Friday
A new entry titled 'Please Join Me Thursday and Friday' has been posted to DemNotes.
As a follow up to last week's post, we've finally nailed down all of the event sites for my campaign announcement Thursday and Friday. As most of you know, I will be announcing on Thursday and Friday, via a six-city statewide tour, that I will be running for Attorney General of Colorado. It would be so great to see each of you there when I announce -- I've got some exciting plans and ideas, and I think the distinction we will be drawing with the incumbent will be very clear when I speak on the 1st and 2nd.
Here are the finalized plans and locations:
Thursday, October 1 9:00 AM - Colorado Springs, Penrose Library, Carnegie Room 1:00 PM - Denver, Pipefitters 208 Hall, 6350 N. Broadway, Denver 5:00 PM - Greeley, Weld County Courthouse, front lawn
Friday, October 2 8:00 AM - Steamboat Springs, Routt County Courthouse, front lawn 1:00 PM - Grand Junction, Traders Coffee and Tea 6:00 PM - Durango, La Plata County Courthouse, Anasazi Room
I hope to do some exciting things, including posting video of some of the events, and keeping updates going via DemNotes, Facebook, and Twitter. But the most important thing you can do right now is to be there!
DemNotes is the blog for Colorado Democrats by State Party First Vice Chair Dan Slater. Unless otherwise indicated, all posts are written by Dan. You have signed up to receive these notifications, or have been added due to your anticipated interest in the Colorado Democratic Party.
Gigi, Vivia, Rio, Jesus, Pat, Dan, Robin and Bennie, and the RGC Dems, I got this email today. Thought it might interest you. Forgive me--I could not resist replying to tell them to jump in the lake. Laura Murphy

Colorado's current fiscal situation can be summed up in just three words:
Arveschoug. Bird. Crisis.
Arveschoug-Bird is a provision of Colorado's budget named after the two state legislators who sponsored the bill creating it in 1991. Arveschoug-Bird, sometimes abbreviated to simply "A-B", reduces the flexibility that our elected state representatives and state senators have in setting Colorado's budget priorities. It limits the amount that legislators can appropriate from the state's "General Fund", which pays for essential public services like education, judicial and corrections services and Medicaid, to the prior year's amount plus 6 percent.
In a recession, Arveschoug-Bird can lead to a Crisis. With the economy contracting, the General Fund contracts too, and Colorado has less money to invest in education, healthcare, public safety, and other priorities. Eventually our economy will recover. But because of Arveschoug-Bird, our General Fund cannot recover as quickly, and education, healthcare, and public safety will continue to suffer.
Here's an example:
Suppose in 2009 that General Fund appropriations total $100. Then, under Arveschoug-Bird, in 2010, General Fund appropriations could be $106 - 6 percent more than the prior year.
But suppose, due to the recession, that General Fund Appropriations shrink to $90 in 2009. Then, even if the economy recovers in 2010, General Fund Appropriations can only be $95.40 - again 6 percent more than the prior year. After the recession, our elected officials might want to invest $106, and we might want them to, to recover from cuts made during the recession to important public services. But under Arveschoug-Bird, they couldn't.
But this year, the Colorado General Assembly has an opportunity to repeal Arveschoug-Bird and give our elected officials more flexibility to make our state budget reflect our values. Repealing Arveschoug-Bird won't increase taxes, and it won't increase total spending. It will just let legislators invest public resources more efficiently.
Senator John Morse (D - El Paso County) is sponsoring Senate Bill 228 to repeal Arveschoug-Bird. More than two dozen other Democratic legislators are co-sponsoring the bill.
Senate Bill 228 will be heard in the Senate Finance Committee this Tuesday, February 24. Please contact your legislators to let them know that you support this important bill. You can find phone and email contact information for your state legislators on the General Assembly web site here: http://www.leg.state.co.us

This is a pivotal time in Colorado's history. We face unprecedented challenges amid a global economic crisis. This crisis also presents opportunities to build on our successes of the previous two years and to keep finding unique Colorado solutions as we move forward together.
At 11 a.m. Thursday, I will be delivering my third annual State of the State Address, and there are a number of opportunities for you to watch and participate in events surrounding the speech.
You can watch live on Thursday via the Internet by clicking here, on live TV by checking your local listings, or by tuning in to Comcast Cable Channel 165. You also can attend a neighborhood watch party to view the speech with friends and family and discuss the economic and other issues facing Colorado.
Then, from Friday through Tuesday, I will be taking the State of the State message to communities all around Colorado, visiting Loveland, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Pueblo and Alamosa.
Michael Bennet, who will be replacing Ken Salazar in the U.S. Senate later this month, will be joining me at several of these events. Times, dates and locations are listed below.
I look forward to visiting with you, listening to your concerns and working together to find solutions in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Attention Mike Miles Supporters
CALLING ALL MIKE MILES SUPPORTERS…
Let’s get Mike appointed to the Colorado Senate seat soon to be vacated by Ken Salazar ….. now is the time for ACTION!
The Colorado senate seat currently held by Ken Salazar, newly appointed Secretary of the Department of the Interior, will be filled within the next few days by Governor Bill Ritter. Mike Miles has indicated that he would be honored to be appointed to that seat.
Here is why Coloradoans will support the appointment of Mike Miles to the seat soon to be vacated by Ken Salazar. Here is why Mike Miles is the BEST choice for Colorado.
* Received majority vote of the delegates to the 2004 Democratic Party State Assembly. Received 52% to Senator Salazar’s 48%. His campaign helped get many new voters engaged and energized the Party. Miles will have the support of the Democratic Party in Colorado.
* Has military experience. Miles is a former Army Company Commander and Army Ranger. He will be one of the few members of the U.S. Senate who knows what is to serve in the Armed Forces. The State’s veterans will feel honored by this appointment.
* Has foreign policy experience. As a former Diplomat and member of the U.S. State Department, Miles will not have a steep learning curve on foreign policy issues and will be able to assist in the numerous foreign policy decisions that will be made over the next year. Coloradoans concerned about our nation’s foreign policy will be supportive of the decision to appoint him.
* Is a superintendent of schools. Education is one of the most important concerns facing our state and nation. Miles is recognized as an accomplished leader on education issues in the state. He has argued persuasively to significantly revise NCLB legislation since its inception in 2002. Miles also understands the concerns of higher education and is a graduate of three of the best institutions of higher learning in America: West Point, U.C. Berkeley, and Columbia University. The State’s educators will welcome this appointment.
* Is every man’s man. Miles has been a custodian, a teacher, and a soldier. People are tired of politics as usual. Miles does not hail from the group of political insiders and will not be a typical appointment. He will find appeal with the common Coloradoan during these tough economic times.
* Will add diversity to the U.S. Senate. With the election of Barrack Obama to the Presidency, the U.S. Senate does not have a Black senator. Miles would be the only Black senator, and will help the Democratic Party maintain its lead among Black voters in Colorado.
* Has an impeccable record. Miles has already been vetted. He held a SCI clearance (above Top Secret) with the U.S. State Department. His record was poured over by reporters and political organizations in the 2004 U.S. Senate race. There will be no last minute surprise in this appointment.
* Has devoted his life to public service. Miles has spent his entire life serving the public interest as a soldier, diplomat, and educator. This notion of service to the country is what is most needed in the U.S. Senate today.
* Engaged the fights that needed fighting. Criticized at the time, Miles team nevertheless fought on what has become the right side of the issues. He was the only candidate for major political office in Colorado that spoke openly and cogently against the invasion of Iraq (he supported the invasion of Afghanistan). His team recognized expanding health care as one of the most important issues facing America. They argued to reform NCLB, invest in the nation’s aging infrastructure, and support the development of alternative fuels. No campaign was a prescient as the Miles campaign.
Mike Miles has run a statewide race. His name is known throughout Colorado. Miles is an inspirational speaker whose values and credibility are impeccable.
TIME is of the ESSENCE – We must act quickly and forcefully to let Governor Ritter know why Mike Miles should be appointed to Colorado’s vacant senate.
If you support Mike’s appointment, here’s what needs to be done by Friday of this week.
Call Governor Ritter’s office, (303) 866-2471. Using the above points ask that Mike be appointed to that seat.
2. Call or email every person on your personal list and ask them to get involved by calling the governor and to notify those on THEIR email lists to do the same. Also ask them to vote for Mike in the ProgressNowAction.org poll.
3. Vote for Mike Miles on the ProgressNowAction.org on-line poll. At the bottom of the poll list is a place to enter a write-in vote for Mike. At noon on Friday, ProgessNow will publish the vote count and modify the poll for another round. They will add Mike to the second round if he receives strong support. Click HERE to vote for Mike Miles now!
4. Write letters to the editors of your local paper. Click HERE to see sample letters.

I just got the results of the election from Sandy Jackson, Rio Grande County Clerk. It is still a red county. We might be able to turn it at some time, but this wasn't the year. John Salazar was the only Democrat to win in the county.
As you can see the margins weren't that large. I think that means that Democrats can improve our margins if we work more effectively. I remember when we had Democrats as commissioners. Rio Grande County is out of step. Maybe we can get it back. In all races that included more than Rio Grande County, the Democrat won. .

Hi,
I would like to thank you all for the hard work you have put into this
election. The reason why Colorado will go blue is not because of the
amount
of funds we raise. It is not because we have great amounts of excitement
through out. It is through the action and hard work you are putting into
this election!!
Each time you knock on a door, dial a number, speak with your family
and friends about the importance of voting this election, you are
ensuring a
large margin of victory.
That being said, we are now in our last big push. We are in
desperate
need of office supplies. Should you have anything on the following
list to
spare, I promise you will have it returned by Nov. 5th.

Please feel free to check this out, but the SLV Dweller site this very
morning posted the news that to mail a ballot with correct postage is
59 cents instead of the standard 42 cents.
The Monte Vista Chamber will host their Meet the Candidates forum
Thursday night, October 23, from 7-9PM at the General Auditorium. This
is located on 2nd and Broadway by Bill Metz school.
Please come and support our Democratic candidates!
And.. do we have someone that might speak for Obama and Udall?
We're down to about 2 weeks until all ballots are cast. Many folks are voting early or by mail. Now, I need your help more than ever before.
It comes down to this....I need everyone to spread the word about voting for me in the District 3 Commissioner's Race. If you know somebody is voting early, or by mail, or going to the polls...please just remind them that I am the choice for District 3 County Commissioner. Most folks already know who they will vote for in the Presidential and Senate races, but some are still undecided when it comes to the local candidates. All I ask is that you mention my name.
I've been outspent by more than 3 to 1 by my opponent. I can't do anything about that and I'm not asking for money (too late for that). I'm only asking for a casual mention of my name to your friends and co-workers before they vote.
Together we can win this!
Thanks for everyone's support and I look forward to serving you for the next 4 years as your County Commissioner.
My sister sent me this today. I found it compelling and thought I would share it with y'all.
FW: Early Voting and WhySpread the word, por favor.
Gobamanos!
My fellow Dems
Since I am taking a vacation day to work the election for the Campaign for Change, I went to a 2 hour training session last night and have the following recommendations from the campaign.
Please do not wait to vote on election day.
If you have a mail in ballot, get it in (must be in to the election officials by 7 pm on Nov. 4th, a postmark doesn¢t cut it). · You can mail it, like right now.
· You can drop it off at your city or county clerk, check your information with your ballot for addresses.
· You can drop it off at your precinct polling place. There will be boxes provided.
· You cannot vote at the polling place if you have a mail in ballot. Your name has been taken off of the list. If you tossed you mail in ballot with the idea that you would cast your vote at the polling place, you have to go to the county clerks office before October 31st to obtain another ballot.
If you vote early, go to the election centers provided by your county.
Why is it important to cast your ballot prior to election day? Well the sarcastic answer is remember Florida and Ohio. The real response is:
· The Campaign for Change has done a tremendous amount of work to Get Out The Vote (GOTV). Their lists are extensive of voters that will vote for, or are leaning toward Obama. For every early vote or mail in vote they can take those voters names off of the list. Then they can concentrate on making sure that those that have not voted cast their ballots prior to 7pm on Election Day.
· There are now 94,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in Colorado and the campaign needs help in making sure that all of those 94,000 additional voters are at the polls. Consider the early vote your way of volunteering.
· As of today, 12% of the registered voters in Colorado have either mailed in or done early voting. Make it larger.

turning Rio Grande county blue.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President ..
The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.
The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.
If you can post it so that it covers up their building put me in for $20. You know one of those larger than life ones.

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.
Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.
The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.
And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.
Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'
(Lucy Burns)
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.
(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.
For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.
(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for
weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because-
-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work?
Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?
See HBO's new movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. Maybe we could all use the reminder.
HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.
It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.
The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for
insanity.'
Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.
We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party - remember to vote.
