Marvin, the nearest French reenactment squad is the Regiment Royal
Deux-Ponts at Yorktown, Virginia, which participates in affairs there and in
Williamsburg. There are other elements of the unit which operate under the
Northwest Territory Association in the mid-west, but it also has members at
Quebec and on the West coast. Unlike most units drawing from one locality,
it serves its members via the internet. The French and British maintained
colonies in the Caribbean and much of the action, including considerable
naval activity, took place there. Colonial troops under the Navy were
raised and participated in the war beside army regulars. You might consider
the Chasseurs-volontaires de Saint-Domingue which participated in the siege
of Savannah, and whose uniform is shown in the Osprey vol.244, "The French
Army in the American War of Independence", available in most hobby shops. It
was the first full-time serving free Black troops to be sent into action in
the French army. The booklet also describes the various uniforms of the
West Indies colonial infantry for Du Cap, Porte-au-Prince, Martinique, and
Guadaloupe, as well as Cadets de Saint-Pierre, and the Martinique Regiment,
including the Fort Royal battalion. At the battle of Yorktown, a second
French corps d'armee was brought up by the French fleet, commanded by
major-general St. Simon, to augment lieutenant-general Rochambeau's corps.
I'm not certain whether any colonial troops were part of it however.
However, an element of the Chasseurs-volontaires served as marines on board
Le Citoyen (74) which was in amiral De Grasse's fleet. During the battle off
the Capes, some 200 officers and men were left on shore when she cut her
cables to do battle, and as a result the upper deck was left unmanned during
the sea battle. De Grasse had lent some 800 marines from his fleet to
support the seige of Gloucester. You could make a case that this unit was
part of the seige of Yorktown. I hope this helps.
