Re: [Revlist] Re: Sectional tent poles

Bob,

Sounds great in theory, doesn't it...

Unfortunately, as Todd mentioned,  there isn't much of a market for linen
tents while there's a market for machine made cotton ones.  Wish there was, but
I also wish I had the head of hair I did when I was twenty.

For now, all we can do is make them ourselves (by hand) and offer what we know
to like minded folks who wish to do the same.

Greg

Greg,
Thought? Send it to the tent manufacturers. Honestly...if this hobby is serious
about that word "authenticity" , (varies by individual I know), all the umbrella
organizations that supposedly pride themselves on that goal, should get their
collective heads together ( read - off their butts)and draft a blanket letter to
these manufacturers that they will no longer refer ANYONE to them for future
tentage until THEY provide a true reproduction, as best as research has to offer
right now...which we all (by now) know is NOT the crap they are producing!
Facing a "boycott" from the major organizations that use their products
will(should? ) do something positive.
It is one of the biggest things that boils my stew, where we will piss and moan
about whether a guy has this or that which is documentable to tenth degree, or
that his musket is not made to EXACT specifications to the origionals.. .but we
continue to construct these white cotton duck "farb-cities" ...and accept it!
Cheers,
Bob Bolton

I'm in the initial stage of actually recreating a proper tent.  If people
would like to have what I have on it, I would be more than happy to share it
with them as well.

construction of 18th century enlisted men's tents. Could you provide me with any
documentation you may have on any of the recommendations you are offering to the
people on this list? Anything would be most appreciated on your references to
fence rails, house framing, the use of y shaped tree limbers, painted poles as
well as threaded/ screw ends? I haven't yet seen period references to any of the
above and would like to have anything that might be available.
