We need to reform the way transportation decisions are made in South Carolina. We need a state policy or law that makes sure roads and bridges are maintained and fixed as new miles are added, so that they too will not fall into disrepair. We need a clear process that describes what problem a road project will fix, and we need models and analyses that will identify if the proposed solution will actually fix the problem. South Carolina must change the way the SC Department of Transportation chooses which roads to build, which roads to widen and which congestion to fix. Political influence holds too much sway in decisions that direct scarce tax dollars to certain projects.
