Hello, Tatyana,
Your letter has touched me. I read it also to my husband Thomas, who cannot read emails because he has lost his vision. He is, on the other hand, very experienced with helping people in distress and is willing to receive a call from you. His cell # is 503-957-8005. Like you, neither he nor I know specifically what help may come of this, but we are willing to reach out in response to your cry. And also like you, we believe in the power of community.

Hi Gabrielle,

Thank you so much for your e-mail.  I will give Thomas a call in the next day or two.

All the best,

WOW, sounds like tough times, Tatyana...

Thanks for reaching out; that is a great first step. Glad to hear Gabrielle
suggested connecting with her husband Thomas. I know you will find the support
you need; "Ask and you shall receive." You WILL find the support and love you
need to get to a second step & beyond.

Blessings to you in the midst of trial and pain. May this be another small voice
saying: YES! There is light & hope ahead... Trust in tomorrow, Tatyana.

Hi All,
I know this question was asked (and answered) recently... but I paid no attention (did not need a dentist at that time!)...

Can anyone recommend a dentist skilled in alternative or holistic dentistry?

Huge tooth pain since last week, and my dentist is suggesting a root canal might be called for.

Any wisdom on root canals (more properly, on alternatives)?

Thanks so much!

Hi Chris,
I will share my experience as it may be helpful.  I was told by a dentist I trusted a few years ago that I needed a root canal, but I fasted instead and the pain went away.  It would come back periodically when I ate nuts, so I gave them up completely for a few years and the tooth pain never came back.  The tooth in question had a crown on it, and the crown was cracked.  Unfortunately, after the pain went away I got complacent and ended up not doing anything with the tooth.  It lasted a few more years and then the crown fell off and it was determined that there wasn’t enough tooth left to support a crown.  Interestingly, there was no pain even after the crown fell off.  I had to have the tooth pulled, however (in preparation for an implant).  If I’d at least had the crown replaced when the crack was first diagnosed, I’d still have the tooth.

The reason why dentists seem to favor root canals is they don’t recognize that pain and inflammation don’t always mean the nerve is dying.  The severity of the pain is what dentists seem to use as an indication that a root canal is needed.  In some or even many cases, it may be best to try and get the pain and inflammation under control with fasting or dietary improvement (minimally), then see a dentist to have repairs done, if needed.  There’s really no cost in doing that, except putting up with the pain a bit longer, although dentists will often try to scare people into submitting right away.  And the benefit may be that you can avoid the cost and discomfort of a root canal.

At the time I was having my problems we had a good discussion on my RawSchool Yahoo group about root canals, so you may want to dig it up on the archives.  I have learned since then that doing root canals is what dentists do to save teeth, at least ostensibly, so from this perspective they are not all bad.  If a root canal is the only way to prevent the complete loss of a tooth, it may be the best course of action (although not the cheapest!).  Determining whether a root canal is really necessary is the tricky part.  It was my plan back then to test my theory (that root canals are only used when there is pain & inflammation) by going to my trusted dentist with the same tooth problem (a cracked crown) but no pain, and see what his recommendation was.  I didn’t do that but, needless to say, I sure wish I would have.  Live and learn!

I’ve got lots of really old (35+ years) dental work in my mouth that is needing replacing right now, so I’ve been traveling to Mexico to have it done.  If you have any interest in doing that, I’d be happy to share my experiences.

Best wishes,
Nora

Please do a search for Hal Huggins, a alternative dentist in Colorado,   After you read about the dangers of root canals, you will never have one completed.   I would pull the tooth always before ever doing a root canal.   Root canals are very connected to breast cancer as well and every woman whom I have asked so far that had breast cancer also did have a least one root canal in her mouth.   You can take if from there.

I have heard from a long time trusted raw food teacher that taking digestive enzymes in large quantity can help reduce pain and inflammation from an abscessed tooth.  I tried it unsuccessfully but I was hesitant to take spoonfuls of enzymes.

Fasting and rest sounds like very sound advice.

I have about half of my teeth left and have thought about implants so I would appreciate what other people's experience is with the procedure and the results long term especially.

Thank you all!

Hi, Paul,

I agree that root canals are not a good idea. I had one done a few years ago and
then it got infected again. I called a holistic doctor in CA and he sent me some
books. I found out that most root canals are next to impossible to clean out
when done and infections begin again.

Also, each tooth is connected via nerves to various organs in the body. That is
why chronic illnesses and cancer develop in relation to the tooth in which a
root canal was done. Scary!

Anyway, I then had the dentist just remove the tooth and had a bridge done...

Hi Aimee,
Dentists in Mexico cost about 1/4 of what American dentists charge.  I chose to use conventional dentists because the holistic dentists I checked out were almost as expensive as American dentists.  The ‘benefits’ aren’t worth that much extra expense, imo.  After I got back from my last trip I found a great website called www.WhatClinic.com that I’m going to use next time.  I’ve been to Mexico twice so far and wasn’t thrilled with my experience.  But the work was done, it was very cheap ($675 for a 3-unit bridge that would have cost $3,000 here), and I had no choice, other than doing without the tooth completely, since I’m uninsured.

Glad that this thread got 'resurrected' as I made apple sauce yesterday from a
neighbor's apples and forgot to use celery to moderate the sugar and made
mesquite pod powder "young coconut milk" and again forgot to use celery.

Aimee I buy Thai Coconuts by the case at Asian markets like Fubonn or the
Vietnamese market on Prescott east of I-205 at about 98th?

Please do not consume more then 1 or 2 cases a week.. Moderation of good
things... slowly eliminate the bad...

No, it's a free event--and she will have her books to sell and sign if you are so moved.

Hi RawPortlanders,

I know this might not be the place to ask this, but I value your opinions and
would like a recommendation for a handyman.

I am moving and I need my therasauna taken apart, air conditioner taken out,
some stuff taken out of the wall and holes filled, and a sink faucet changed
out(possibly).

I have checked Yelp and the prices seem very high($90 an hour?), and I also
don't believe all of the rave reviews.

If anyone has personally used someone that they could recommend(and who is
reasonable), I would appreciate their info.

I need someone in the next few days.

Thanks Much,

Tatyana

Hi, folks --

The Living Raw in Portland meetup group is sponsoring a visit from Kate Magic on Tuesday, Oct. 30th. She's also doing a kids-focused event with the Raw Food Playgroup on Thursday, Nov. 1st.

Pre-registration for both events is quite small, so I'm trying to drum up additional interest. The Tuesday event is $5, at People's in the evening, and is scheduled as an informal potluck and Q&A. The event on Thursday is for raw kids and their parents and is free with a donation requested.

Both events are currently set up as potlucks, which I suspect is contributing to their low pre-registration numbers. I'm going to give the larger Tuesday event another 24 hours and then will likely switch it over to a more standard lecture presentation in the hopes that attracts more folks. I'm alerting this list either to drum up additional support for the potluck or to announce the switch to a lecture format.

Kate Magic is among the most renowned raw foodists and authors in the UK and Europe. She has a large internet presence and has written four books, with a fifth coming out in November (Raw Magic: Superfoods for Superpeople). She's been a raw foodist for over two decades, and is raising three sons in the raw vegan lifestyle. She's unlike any other speaker we've had in Portland in some time, and I'm hoping we can give her a good Portland turnout.

Please pass the word along!

Potluck and Q&A with Kate Magic , Tuesday 7-9pm, People's, $5
Raw Children Talk! , Thursday 2:30 - 4:00 pm, near Lewis & Clark, free with donation requested

Be well!

Hello Everyone,

I've got some really great stuff for the raw vegan diet and lifestyle that needs
a new home (Vitamix, dehydrator, ice cream maker, books, and more). Please pass
this along to anyone who may be seeking these items. They've served me extremely
well and I know people in this community will appreciate getting such good deals
on things they may need. I'm looking to sell and rehome these as soon as
possible, so if you're looking at getting several items, feel free to make me an
offer. I live in NW Portland, near Food Front co-op and can be reached at

Good4You 6-Tray Dehydrator
Stellar temperature-controlled dehydrator with 6-trays and a fan in the back to
evenly circulate air. After comparing excalibur with this one, I considered it
to be an excellent choice and have had much success preparing food for myself as
well as community events. Local chefs have even borrowed it when serving large
groups. It's great for all the works: granola, crackers, crepes, dried fruit,
onion or banana bread, "sausage"… you name it!
Includes 7 trays (one was minority damaged so I bought a spare, but the spare
hasn't even been used yet), 6 telex sheets, 6 nonstick sheets, and 1 "blank"
(used in place of trays if you have a tall item to dehydrate) that is not yet
used.

Other Items:
I have other kitchen items that need new homes, and I won't worry about pricing
them individually right now. They include 7 1-lb bags of raw buckwheat (Bob's
Redmill certified gluten-free), cute cookie cutters (fun on dehydrated breads
and fruits), silicon baking containers (great when you need to let something
like a pie crust set in the fridge and then be able to get it out later),
mini-pie foils, coconut cleaver, plastic colander, set of three nesting
stainless steel mesh strainer bowls, ice cube trays, silicon ice cube triangle
tray, silicon muffin sheet (great for shaping tarts, pies, and other goodies in
fridge or dehydrator).

Subject: Omega Vert Juicer for sale
calciumcarbo...
Send Email Send Email

I have an awesome juicer for sale. It's the juicer I most highly recommend but I'm moving, haven't been using it lately, and don't want to have to haul it on my long move.

The Omega Vert (VRT330) is a stellar low speed juicing system that efficiently squeezes the liquid from plants without many of the complications I've had with other juicers. I chose this one partially for its ease of use and effectiveness at juicing green leafy plants (as well as just about anything else), but also because I think it is the easiest juicer to clean. You can see information about it at http://www.omegajuicers.com/juicers/vert-vrt330-juicer.html. It's the juicer of choice of many health enthusiasts, raw foodies, and juice-feast/fasters that I know.

The juicer is in excellent condition, comes with all its parts, and I even have the original box.

While it currently retails for $329.99 on the manufacturer's website, I'm selling it for just $270 OBO and it can be picked up in NW Portland. You can contact me at rylee.k@...

Thanks!
Rylee
