I am looking to see if anyone has a Kombucha mother they would be willing to give me.  I live between Beaverton and Hillsboro in the Tansabourne area. It would be best if you live someplace west of Portland also.

In addition does anyone have a kefir water grains/culture that is vegan that they can share some of? I am not really sure how that passing on works but I am sure I can find something on the web to help get me started if you do not know. I plan on using coconut milk.

Thanks,

Constance

One just has to laugh at this. A SERIOUS recall would be vaccines,
pharmaceuticals, inhumane killing of 'livestock'....please fill in the blanks.
The enemy is certainly not spinach and alfalfa sprouts. Best wishes to All!

I have used the commercial "off the shelf" Kombucha as a "mother".  As long as the culture is live, it works fine (the bottle label should indicate "live").

Best of luck,

My sister and I both tried that in exactly the same manner with the same off the shelf product.  Hers worked mine did not. Oh well…not a big deal.  I might try again or she might send me a baby.  She does not live near me…..

Anyway I thought I would just check local and see if I could get one that way instead of trying to grow my own again.  There is more than one way to get the job done and I am willing to try and grow my own again.

Hi, Jeff!

I don't know of anything on the schedule, but I suppose with this much
advance warning, we could come up with something! What do you say,
folks? A raw potluck picnic here in Vancouver? How about Vancouver
Lake park? That's close enough to the border with Oregon where it
shouldn't be too far out of the way for Portland folks.

Blessings -

Sue

Gabrielle reminded me of the Sunday Supper, so I'll plan to be there.
I have yet to attend one, so am looking forward to it. I may stop by
Blossoming Lotus for lunch Monday before my drive home.

Hi, Jeff!

Yes, Sunday Supper is a weekly catered raw foods event every Sunday in
Milwaukie. The June 11th event is not yet posted, but folks can read about
today's dinner here:

http://www.meetup.com/LivingRawPDX/calendar/13500650/

The Blossoming Lotus downtown has closed, and they have moved to a more fine
dining establishment in NE Portland near the Lloyd Center. Their menu remains
predominantly the same. I have personally found that a number of local raw
foodists have drifted away from Blossoming Lotus; they seem much more focused on
their cooked vegan selections, and the vitality/energy of their raw food
offerings, IMO, has suffered for that.

I'm going to try out Prasad today, which is the eatery that replaced Blossoming
Lotus in the downtown Pearl location. They're been receiving very favorable
reviews from the folks I've talked to, but I haven't yet tried it myself. They
are also a mix of raw and cooked food.

http://prasadcuisine.squarespace.com/

Enjoy your trip!

Hi, Angela!

I supply high-quality cacao butter through Our Community Pantry. We are in
between order cycles, but we have some overstock including 3.5 lbs of cacao
butter, some nibs and powder, and almonds, sunflower seeds, and pecans.

The butter is $11.14/lb cash or check, or $11.46/lb if you want to pay online
with Paypal.

http://ourcommunitypantry.com/ordering.html

I believe People's Food Co-Op in SE Portland also stocks raw cacao butter.

Be well!

GROWING VEGETABLES UPSIDE DOWN"
"Growing crops that dangle upside down from homemade or commercially available planters is growing more popular, and its adherents swear they’ll never come back down to earth...

The advantages of upside-down gardening are many: it saves space; there is no need for stakes or cages; it foils pests and fungus; there are fewer, if any, weeds; there is efficient delivery of water and nutrients thanks to gravity; and it allows for greater air circulation and sunlight exposure.

While there are skeptics, proponents say the proof is in the produce," quoting the New York Times.

Hi, Angela!

We strive to be as convenient as possible, which includes personalized pickup
scheduling, so the morning of 6/16 is great. I have sent you a direct email
regarding the details of your order.

If you decide to order product with us more regularly, let's work together to
get some people out your way participating with you, so that your immediate
neighborhood community can form a drop of its own and monthly pickup in SE
Portland can become a shared activity. We ultimately hope to have drops in every
quandrant of the city.

Also, to set the record straight for others reading, the price I quoted in my
last message was an older price not reflective of our shipping costs when
receiving product. I should have quoted our cacao butter price as $11.89/lb. The
error on the website with older prices has now been fixed.

Thanks for giving our product a go! Be well, everybody!

Hi, Sunny!

Our Community Pantry posts recipes every month through our newsletter. We
featured cacao in May, so there are a few cacao recipes on our website,
including nutritionist Adrea Nakayama's amazing Nakayummies.

You can find our recipes at: http://ourcommunitypantry.com/recipes.html

Andrea publishes recipes every month in her newsletters as well, and has a
number of amazing cacao-based recipes that are converting folks to raw desserts.
Her offerings aren't all raw, but most of them are. You can sign up for her
newsletter at: http://www.replenishpdx.com/

One of my favorite recipes, that I sold for a while at the food co-ops in town
and at farmers' markets, was for an avocado-based raw cacao pudding. No butter,
but a high-quality cacao powder. It was based off of a recipe in the Raw Food
for Dummies book, but almost everyone has a variant on it that you can find out
there. Dates and agave for sweetener, avocado, water, some vanilla. It's the
kind of thing I recommend playing around with until you get the right
combination of flavors for your own tastes. Go light on the sweetener and cacao
at first... I prefer it rich and chocolately and not too sweet, and if you are
using a high-quality cacao you can use less for more flavor.

Thanks for asking! Be well!

Hey, folks!

Rawdawg Rory, a raw foods chef and health motivator, has another week in town during his wife's "Live my Life NOW" Trek across the country. I've been trying to find a space for Rory to share some of his cheffing tips and tricks and for the two of them to share their story, without much luck.

I'd like to give folks a chance to meet these two amazing WA neighbors on their inspiring voyage, and so am making an appeal to the community at large... if you have a living room that can comfortably house 10-12 people (or more!) or an event space, and have an evening free this week (6/14-6/19) to host them, please contact me and we'll get something going before they leave Portland on the next leg of their adventure.

Hi Christine ~

Dr. Marlane Bassett at Vitalia Health Center in SE Portland is the first person
who comes to mind. She is a ND and has a lot of personal and professional
experience with the raw food diet & lifestyle.
503-235-2120

Dr. Ericha Clare and Dr. Bijana Devo are a couple other ND's who may be able to
support you as well.

Best wishes,

Tashi Rana, MA
Food and Lifestyle Counselor

Does anyone know where to get bulk raw pumpkin seeds. I was buying from China
but heard recently that they pulled the inspectors and that organics may not
carry the same weight as it does here.

Yes, People's Co-op on SE 21st St. just north of Powell carries organic
raw pumpkin seeds that are grown in Scio.

Anyone know where I can buy a 1-gallon mason jar in Portland?

I'm also interested in large clean glass jars for collecting & transporting
purified water. I'm open to using plastic, but don't want to use the large blue
multi-gallon jugs I see for sale as they're made with the ever-mysterious #7
plastic.

Mirador, on se division by the new seasons and peoples co-op, usually has ½ and full gallon mason jars, if they don’t have them at the moment they usually get them restocked.
