Subject: [Raspberry_Pi_4-Ham_RADIO] Announcing TNC-Pi: A Customized Version of TNC-X for Raspberry Pi

Hi Folks:

As has been previously mentioned on this group, John Wiseman adapted (and improved) my TNC-X firmware to create a version of TNC-X that can be plugged directly into the expansion header of a Raspberry Pi.

I'd like to give you an update on the status of this project. A small batch of the the boards for TNC-Pi (as I'm now calling it) were received a couple of weeks ago. I built one up and found that it worked great, but there were a couple of layout issues that I wanted to address before ordering a larger batch. The only real issue was that the holes for 8 of the capacitors were a little closer together than would normally be desired.

I revised the board (and made a couple of other small changes as well...mostly to clarify the parts layout) and was about to order a larger batch of boards when I discovered that Chinese New Year had started and all the board factories in China were closed down for two weeks.

Since there was going to be a delay anyway, I devoted the new found time to doing a couple of other things. First, I sent the revised board to a board house in Ireland (more expensive, but they don't celebrate Chinese New Year) for a sample to make sure I hadn't introduced any new problems while making the changes to the first board. That sample board is now in transit and I should have it in the next couple of days.

Secondly, I spent some time writing a first draft of a manual for the new TNC and a web page to permit people to order it. That task is now complete. I also kitted up the other 9 boards so they could be sold. They are now available to be ordered from the new web page. They are electrically identical to the boards that will be the "final" version. I am offering them at the introductory price of $40. That's $10 cheaper than the original TNC-X!

Given the number of people who expressed interest in this project, I expect that the first 9 will sell out fairly quickly. I will continue to take orders beyond those original nine; those orders will be filled as soon as the first large batch of boards comes in from China (in about 3 weeks). Because of the delay, I'll honor the introductory price until I have units in stock for immediate shipment. It is possible that I may be able to keep the final price at or near the introductory price... it depends on the final cost.

So if you want one immediately, here's your chance. At this time I am only announcing availability on this group. I won't post a link on the main TNC-X page or on the Coastal ChipWorks page until I have stock on hand for immediate shipment of larger amounts. This will maximize the chance that you can get one of the first nine boards.

If you are interested, see: www.tnc-x.com/TNCPi.htm

There is a link to the draft manual on this page. It includes a photo of one of the capacitors installed in the board so you'll see what's involved in dealing with the spacing issue.

Thanks for your patience while I gear up production.

My biggest hindrance was in first too easily getting Xming to run a single
remote desktop session. That delayed me from finding out how it ought to work
with X-forwarding being able to pop up a new window for each open app. With that
and learning how to use use the "screen" command to run multiple terminal
sessions each with a GUI window. Well worth getting it right.

Thanks for letting me know.  You were in fact, the first person to place an order.  You'll get an email from USPS today saying your kits have been mailed, but I pulled them out of the outgoing stock and redirected them to others (at your request).  Your's will be the first ones sent when the new batch of boards comes in.

Oops!  That last email I sent was supposed to be directed to W2CL.  Sorry.   Things are a little hectic here.  The first nine boards sold out last night in 40 minutes.  I am getting a steady stream of orders today and I'll get individual acknowledgements out later today or tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks to everyone for your support and while I wait for the next batch of boards I'll get these kitted up so all I should have to do is put in a board and drop them in the mail when the next batch of boards comes in.  Notice to those who ordered from outside the US:  Tomorrow is a postal holiday in the US, so nothing will be shipped until Tuesday.

I bought a USB GPS Dongle, at a UK electronics supplier (Maplin) about four
years ago. They were on special offer at approx. US$30.
I wanted it for use with an Asus Netbook. It worked well, straight out of the
box with the Asus' built-in Linux and with Mandriva Spring Linux.

I've not tried it with the Pi, but I expect you'd need to find a driver.

Hi John,

Have you try to install a VNC server in your Pi like TightVNC?

I've two RasPi on my network (both without keyboard/mouse), one of them without LXDE, in this one I only use a ssh client with X11Forwarding enabled.

The second RasPi is running with LXDE and the VNC server (tightvnc), as I'm also a Linux newbie I've googled to find the easiest way to install it, and I can resume it as:

    sudo apt-get install tightvncserver

Logged with the user that you have active and you will user to connect (can be 'pi' or other user that you had created) runs for first time the tighvnc server which will ask you for a password, not the user password but the password that the VNC server will use:

    tightvncserver

Now you have the VNC installed and configured, you need now that it starts up when you boot your RasPi, googling you can find several ways to do it, creating scripts, adding them to the init.d folder, but I have done it adding a line to the /etc/rc.local file just before the 'exit 0' line:

    su -c "/usr/bin/tightvncserver -geometry 1024x768" pi

You must change the 'pi' for the user that you have in your system, and also select the geometry that you prefer.

After this you have your RasPi ready to connect with your VNC client, who can be xtighvnc ( http://www.tightvnc.com/download.php ) or other one

I'm sure that  we can do it by other ways, but it has been the easiest for me.

I am currently looking into http://elinux.org/RPi_Remote_Access.
Googling "raspberry pi remote" produces a number of suggestions.
I suspect there are ommitted details and assumptions in many of the offerings that trap us beginners.
The question:
Can anyone offer their personal success with Paspberry Pi - windows graphic remote setup?

I've prepared a custom 'image' for use in my school which initiates 2 VNC
servers at boot, one for root and one for pi. Also SSH, FTP and a webserver.

You are welcome to a copy, I can make a zip available when I return home
(currently in my "RV"). There are already copies circulating in the USA.

As long as it sends out standard NMEA sentences, just:

apt-get install gpsd gpsd-clients

Then configure.

Yes, no problem shipping to Germany.  Almost half of Coastal ChipWorks sales go to customers outside the U.S.

Try these links folks,

http://elinux.org/RPi_VNC_Server
http://elinux.org/RPi_A_Method_for_ssh_blind_login
http://elinux.org/RPi_Remote_Access

As they say, 1. Pi as a vnc server, 2. ssh login & 3. 'remote desktop' (on Windows you'll require xming or cygwin)

Just follow the instructions, any problems come back.

Yes, it can be done using Jonathan's Dummy Repeater module, a DV-Dongle and USB sound card. My personal preference would be to do it in a manner that didn't require a second computer to handle the audio stream to Radioreference.

I've prepared a custom 'image' for use in my school which initiates 2 VNC servers at boot, one for root and one for pi. Also SSH, FTP and a webserver.

You are welcome to a copy, I can make a zip available when I return home (currently in my "RV"). There are already copies circulating in the USA.

Thanks Ken. I Know the DVongle works with Ircddbgateway and Dummy repeater as I run that on a Windows machine. I just don't if there is a way to feed the audio to radio reference on the PI.

I know it's possible, using ircddbgateway and soundcardrepeater, I don't own a dv dongle so I've never tried it, I wouldn't be against experimenting though. If your interested email me directly and I will see what I can pull out of my magic hat.

I've used a DV Dongle with a USB headset and the dummyrepeater program on a Raspberry Pi. It worked.

Well, sort of. I had issues with the USB headset, but I believe a recent Raspberry Pi firmware update may have fixed that, I just haven't gotten around to trying it again yet. It's on my 'round to-it list of things to do.

I don't know about the radio reference part, I've never messed that, but it sounds interesting.

This is what I had hoped to see with the advent of the Pi. A totally standardized, inexpensive hardware base with equally inexpensive standard software-on-a-chip that makes it possible for plug-and-play no-brainer software installation, backed up by a solid technical community. Yes, I know that some Linux entheusiasts will point out that installation and configuration is where the fun is, but some of us just want to actually operate new (or old) technology without giving up a significant part of their life to make it work! Goodatcha Brian!

Thank you, I will get a copy to you when I return home in a day or so. No one we left at home knows Linux, they are all Windows users so I can't ask then to retrieve it.

Look into dark ice to stream to radio reference. Looks do able.
