Mary Ann here.
Getting ready to send on all my tidbits about the southern Rakestraws, just in
case they help someone. This one might answer some non-matching DNA questions.
I do not descend from these lines so what I send is all that I know. Feel free
to ask questions though - there are people in the group who might have the
answer.
Found this sheet in my files No idea of the source - Dave ???
Descendants of Tabitha Rakestraw Problem
"It appears to me tha tthe confusion is James was married twice. Once to Martha
Jane Hyde and also to Frances Delitha Rains. According to my records the only
children that James and Frances had were Margaret, Frances Telitha Susie Joanna,
and William Cicero. The other children were with James and Martha.
"Here is a note I also had in my files that was told to me by my aunt before she
passed on concerning James:
Took the name of Rakestraw because he was raised by John (Jack) Rakestraw. Was
known as a brother of Lifus. Lifus and Jack fought in the civil war together.
Was raised by a Nancy Rakestraw (Flemming) but was son of Tabitha Rains."
Dave.
Joseph F. Rakestraw came to Pontotoc County, MS from Gwinnett County, GA in the 1840's. He came with the Bridges family. Solomon & Mary Smith Bridges. Joseph married their daughter, Elizabeth C.Mary "Bettie" Bridges. Before 1870, Pontotoc County consisted of Pontotoc, Lee & Union Counties in MS. So most all of the Rakestraws here in Union County, MS are descendants of Joseph and "Bet." Myself included.
Hello, I am sorry but I am not familiar with this Rakestraw. I have looked through my records and don't have anything, but I will keep your message on file and let you know if I run across anything in the future. Good luck to you in your search. The Rakestraws are fine, strong, and well-respected people and I am proud to be descended from them. I think the Georgia county you mentioned must be Gwinette. ~Gail

Gail, my gggrandfather was Joseph F. Rakestraw. He appears on the MS census in 1850 & 1860. He list his origin as GA. He shows up in MS in 1849 at about the age of 18 or 19.
If you have any ideas or records pre 1849 with his name I would greatly appearciate knowing about them. In MS he married a young lady from Gewinnette (sp?) county GA.
Best regards, John Rakestraw Longmont, CO

Hello, my name is Gail Edwards Hutchinson. I would be interested in hearing from any RAKESTRAW families from Georgia, especially living in Paulding County. My maternal grandparents were WILLIAM IRVIN RAKESTRAW and JESSIE SHIPP RAKESTRAW. I have a lot of information and am always looking for more. Thanks to all. ~Gail

Most of known answers to your questions can be found right on our site in the files section. We've scanned most of the history about William Rakestraw and uploaded it.
Go give it a peek and if you still have some questions, we'll answer them if we can. Basically, William appears to have been a cantankerous Quaker who didn't get along with William Penn (in my opinion - for good reason).
Welcome to the Rakestraw group. I don't have any of that kind of information. I have only gotten as far back as Old Nancy from Rockingham, North Carolina. I hope you have good luck finding what you need.

Hi. I just joined your group and was reading some of the postings on the site. I have names, but am looking for information like: Why William left England, (I saw that someone said he was a Quaker), what ship and when he came over, where he settled, etc. just basically more information beyond names and dates on any of the names listed below. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Lillian
Here is how my line goes: William Rakestraw & Grace Wyron - Thomas Rakestraw & Mary Wilkins - Thomas Rakestraw & Elizabeth Zane - Paul Chalkley Rakestraw & Rebecca (Unknown) - Joseph P Rakestraw & Isabell Gowdy - Jane Rakestraw & William Henry Blake (My gg-grandfather)

I know a lot of people reply to e-mails from the Rakestraw Discussion Group without actually logging into the Yahoo site. As such, many may not remember how to access the file section.
I'll check it out. I'll make sure Gail will do the same.

Thank you so much; It truly was an accident in clicking the group. I don't even contribute to groups, I just like to read them... Thanks again so much.
The new family search site is up and running - or almost there. They
need some feedback... Mary Ann
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is developing a new
version of the FamilySearch.org Web site. This new Web site will help
individuals identify ancestors and link them to families, and it will
help Church members perform temple ordinances for their ancestors.
Can you volunteer an hour of time to help evaluate this new Web site?
Do you know someone else who might be interested? We are looking for
feedback to help make the Web site as easy and enjoyable to use as
possible. We are especially interested in feedback from individuals
who are new to family history. They want people who are and not LDS
for feedback.
Anyone over age 18 interested in participating in this evaluation is
invited to go to the following Internet address to sign-up:
http://labs.familysearch.org/temple/static/signup.htm
Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm. We greatly value your
time and opinion.
Sincerely,
The FamilySearch User Experience Evaluation Team

Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.
Either way I think it is probably just an error. Just some record keeper who didn't know how to spell the name and wrote it how the person pronounced it.
Have any of you found any information on the spelling WRAKESTRAW I have
run across it a few times. This is not my family but was just letting
you know this is another way to spell our name.

I uploaded all of the requested Rakestraw articles. They had never
been posted before because they are under copyright. However, until we
get a complaint - here they are.

From the "Digested Copy of the Registers of Marriages, Births and
Deaths of the Quarterly Meeting of Berkshire and Oxfordshire" we have
the marriage of "William Rakestraw Jr. of Henley on Thames, County of
Oxford, Hairweaver, and Grace Wyron of New Windsor, County of Berks,
daughter of John Wyron of New Windsor, Berks, at Thomas Davey's house
in New Windsor, 7-7-1673" (Reading and Warboro Monthly Meeting)... (7
September 1673)
