Attention! HARC meeting location change:

The HARC meeting for Tuesday 2 November will take place in the Eureka
Fire Department's training room on 6th Street in Eureka, between C and
D Streets, at 7 p.m.

The Blue Ox Community School became subject to a changed access
policy and we had to scramble to find a new room.1

Please pass it on to anyone you talk with before then.

I see that the Humboldt County DA has a new FCC license for a VHF
repeater on 154.115 (WQKY262), with one repeater, one fixed base, and
*50* mobiles. Must've increased their staff! This will probably
help fill in when their HF 3.201 radio doesn't get through :)

Dear Moderator,

My telephone number and email address appeared on the message.  If this guy is interested there is no reason he should be posting to the list.

TR, WB6TMY

P.S.  So far, no responses.  After a lifetime of living in apartments and suffering CC&R's I find it amazing that no hams are interested in a sympathetic landlord.  I've offered my properties repeatedly over the last 3 years and never had a response.  Randy, W6RA is the only tenant I ever had and I think he was happy.

The Great California Shake Out earthquake drill starts at 10:15. Radio
traffic having to do with earthquakes and tsunamis occurring thereabouts
is certainly a drill (except in the case of a bizarre coincidence
happening). Hams might want to check in on their local simplex frequencies.

Two Wilson fires have gone to 120 acres. Used Crescent Fire and Fort Dick Water
tenders, they were released Sat evening 8Pm to return to fires Sun morning.
There is also a tall tree fire of about 1 acre included in this complex.

Sat evening a 1+ acre fire was reported north of the Crescent City Airport and
Dead Lake, Crescent Fire Dist had to locate and access. They could see it
activility burning had units trying to access. Chief had dispatch find a airport
responsible with gate keys also to alert anyone that fire units were on runway.
Also contacted State Parks need someone with gate keys to get into park area.
State Parks told dispatch they had no one to respond with keys. Chief told
dispatch tell them it's their property thats burning! Another fire to sit on
overnight. Hit it again tomprrow.
I forsee a key /access meeting between the airport, state parks, and Crescent
Fire next week.

Not all planes land on the runway.

The airport is constructing a tall fence around the property to keep the deer
off the runways, and for homeland security

About 22:03, after many minutes of apparently behind-the-scenes
discusion with someone, EFD dispatched an engine to the crash "for an
extrication." An EPD officer on scene, with obvious irritation in
his voice, just now asked whether they're sending an enine or not, "Do
we have an ETA on them? We have people holding a patient here, who
are getting tired. Are they coming?" Dispatcher replied that yes, an
engine is enroute. But it's gonna be the engine from the other side
of town, since the engine at HQ (2 blocks from the scene) doesn't have
jaws on board. He held his tongue but you could hear him anyway.

I don't know what the debate/delay was... maybe whether EFD or CAL
FIRE should handle the extrication?

It looks like the West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has now issued a Tsunami ADVISORY for the coastal areas of California and Oregon.  See:

The gist of which is:

"A Tsunami Advisory is in effect which includes the coastal areas of California and Oregon from the California-Mexico border to the Oregon-Washington border...

"A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory.  Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival."

Estimated initial arrival times for any Tsunamis along the California coast - IF they occur - are between about 20:45 (8:45pm) and 21:25 (9:25 pm) local time.  See list at

The annual Redwood Coast Amateur Radio Convention is this Saturday,
September 26, from 9am to 4pm. This year, for the first time, it will
be at St. Bernard's School in Eureka, 222 Dollison Street (the school
is about 2 blocks west of Henderson Center along the north side of
Henderson, and the door is around the block on Dollison).

Admission is $2. Swap tables are free! Bring your old stuff and sell
it to the rest of us.

The Redwood Amateur Radio Club is running the snack bar as it has in
recent years, with hot and cold food available throughout the day,
starting with breakfast.

There will be a main raffle, and also frequent door prize raffles of
all kinds of donated items throughout the day. The main raffle's
prizes are a Yaesu FT-60R dual band HT, Yaesu FT-180 2m mobile, a
CCrane radio (AM/FM/2m), and $70 of meat from the Myrtle Market.
Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.

Setup for the swap tables is from 8 to 9. The convention opens at 9
and ends at 4. VE testing at 10:00 a.m. ARRL Forum with Bill
Hillendahl is at 11:00.

More volunteers are needed to help set up the hall at 8:00 Saturday
morning and tear it down and set up the banquet at 4 p.m. Please feel
free to show up for these!

As usual, social hour and the banquet follow at the end of the day,
after we change the room around. Contact Marci, KE6IAU, before
Saturday for banquet reservations and your dinner selection. Contact
me for Marci's contact info if you don't have it.

John, KG6MAR
