I think you'll need something that works even if all the electrics and battery fail. I guess it will depend on what the DAR will accept. There may be some

Dave: Your operating limitaions will specify that you need to comply with 91.205. 91.205 states that you are required to have a "magnetic direction indicator"

It might be worth checking with your inspector. Here in Northern Virginia the FSDO still does inspections if the builder chooses to use them. Unfortunately,
