Subject: ACTION ITEM: RLC at the Fair Tax rally!

Send Email Send Email

Friends,

There is going to be a FairTax Rally in Orlando on July 29. It will
be put on by local radio station (WDBO) and hosted by Jon Linder and
Neal Boortz and similar to the one in Atlanta on May 24. It will be
held at the Orlando City Hall steps at 10 AM.

We need a volunteer or volunteers to pass out RLC flyers that
highlight the RLC's support for REAL tax reform, including the Fair
Tax. The flyer has been posted to the website, www.rlcfl.org, on the
left-hand blue column under PRESS RELEASES / FLYERS. Here's the full
link: http://www.rlcfl.org/Fair_tax.pdf

I have 200 of these flyers in an overnight envelope ready to mail.
If you commit to distribute them at the Orlando rally (it shouldn't
take more than an hour of your time), please contact us ASAP and we
will have these shipped to you overnight. More can be copied, if
necessary, using a master from the website.

Call me -- (561) 254-8458. Thanks!

We're looking for someone to pass out flyers about the RLC and our
stance on the Fair Tax. Unfortunately, I will be out of town
beginning on Friday. This is a good opportunity for us to get our
name out there. Let me know if you are available and we'll get you
the flyers ASAP. Thanks.

Don't worry,

Orlando RLCer Neil Pansey volunteered and will be distributing the
flyer. But don't let this deter anyone else from printing the flyer
from the website (www.rlcfl.org), making photocopies and passing them
out at the rally. The more the merrier!

Yes, it's true! The national RLC's most ambitious convention yet
will be held right here in Orlando Sept. 15-17 and Stephen Moore,
arguably the most influential libertarian Republican in the country
(Wall Street Journal editor, co-founder of the Club for Growth, Cato
Institute senior fellow, etc.), will be speaking at our recepetion
and banquet.

Here's the whole story: www.rlcfl.org

Buy your package and start spreading the word!

A flyer (http://www.rlcfl.org/orlando_flyer.pdf) has been posted to
the RLCFL website that you can print, copy and pass out at GOP club
meetings in the Orlando area in August and September. The flyer only
advertises the banquet event and is directed at all Republicans, not
just RLCers. Lisa Bullion will be distributing the flyer at a YR
shindig tonight.

Let's get to work!

Here's what we did so far:

1. Last night Lisa Bullion distributed the Moore flyer to a YR shindig
in Orlando.

2. I sent camera-copy for a 1,000 post card mailing to RLC members and
prospects in the Orlando area.

3. I submitted calendar announcements to the Orlando Sentinel and the
Orlando Weekly.

4. I sent two dozen Moore flyers to the OCREC for distribution at
their Aug. 21 board meeting.

Here's what you can do:

1. Print out the website flyer, copy and distribute to your local GOP
meetings.

2. Buy your convention package! See www.rlcfl.org.

RLC candidates did very well. Nearly 80% of our
candidates for Congress were elected or re-elected,
because they focused their campaigns on critical
issues of individual rights, limited government and
private enterprise. Reps. Jeff Flake, Ron Paul,
John Shadegg, Steve Chabot, and Jack Kingston
had very successful campaigns and will be among
the new leaders in the next Congress.

Others, like J.D. Hayworth of Arizona, focused
on conservative issues where we disagree and lost
their contests. We had some uphill battles that
were promising, like Paul Ard in Kentucky 6 and
Joe Negron in Florida 16 ["Punch Foley to elect
Joe"] that fell short. We also saw some strong
efforts from new faces, running against entrenched
incumbents, such as Tim Walberg's victory in
Michigan 7. There were three RLC victories in
open seats: Peter Roskam in Illinois 6, Adrian
Smith in Nebraska 3 and Jim Jordan in Ohio 4.
These are all going to be strong advocates for
libertarian ideas in the next Congress.

In the Senate, our top-rated legislator, John
Ensign of Nevada, won handily and will be among
the new leadership in that chamber. John Kyl in
Arizona and Craig Thomas in Wyoming did very
well running on RLC positions. Those who "ran
to the right" on social issues, even though we
consider them great advocates of economic
liberty, were defeated. Among the losses were
George Allen in Virginia, Jim Talent in Missouri,
and Conrad Burns in Montana ... who suffered
from connections to the Abramoff scandal.
They were all very close contests, beaten by
the tide of a national referendum on Bush.

Long-time RLC friends, like Mark Sanford in
South Carolina and Butch Otter in Idaho, had
strong gubernatorial victories. We were very
disappointed at Ken Blackwell's loss in Ohio
and Asa Hutchinson in Arkansas. They both
ran very good campaigns, but were victims of
anti-Republican fever.

Across the country, we had scores of
state executive and legislative victories, even
a near victory by RLC favorite Tom McClintock
in the California Lieutenant Governor's race.
Over 70% of our candidates won, but we had
a few RLC members lose their seats in Maine
and Washington. They'll be back as activists
and organizers for the next election cycle.

The RLC made a blanket endorsement of
two different state initiative issues. Almost all
of the anti-Kelo propositions were adopted by
large margins, restricting government takings
of private property. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights
[TABOR] initiatives all failed as a result of strong
opposition from government unions and nearly
every Democratic legislator. Efforts to enhance
private property rights and limit taxes will always
be on our agenda.

Issue: Iraq
The loss of trust in the Bush Administration
had a decidedly bad effect on every Republican
campaign across the country. RLC candidates
who won had to demonstrate their independence
and thoughtful consideration of new strategies
to overcome the voter's distaste for a prolonged
and failing effort. Although the RLC has not taken
an official position on the Iraq War, we are not
apologists for the President or failed policies.
We favor a defensive military posture and oppose
all national building (positions that Bush shared
until after the Afghan victory).

Issue: Immigration
The RLC has always been a strong advocate
of open borders and fair treatment of immigrants.
Nearly all of our federal candidates supported
a comprehensive reform of immigration policy.
Republicans who focused on "building a wall"
and cultural protectionism were badly beaten
across the country. We favor the administration
proposals for guest workers and an easy path
to legality. We expect that the results of
this election will prompt Congress to agree to
a reasonable immigration policy.

Issue: Spending
Although making some advances in cutting
taxes, Republican legislators suffered the just
wrath of libertarians for profligate spending and
pork-barrel favoritism. The sad culture of buying
voter support with special favors, subsidies,
and foolish projects was the basis for most of
the corruption scandals that engulfed several
GOP leaders. We expect RLC victors to join
Rep. Jeff Flake's heroic efforts to eliminate
spending earmarks and corporate giveaways.

Issue: Constitution
Republicans ought to be the first defenders
of individual rights and constitutional principles.
Party loyalty and deference to the President's
judgement have clouded their devotion to first
principles. We hope that RLC legislators will
join Congressman Ron Paul in speaking out
against every violation of the Constitution. The
top issue for the RLC is limiting government,
not expanding it. Our candidates will not be
supporting entitlement expansions or new
federal bureaucracies. We hope they can find
a way to privatize social security and scrap
federal intervention in education, as critical
steps toward expanding individual choice.

While his base is in the Republican Party, for some independents and

to do this is right now, in preparation for the campaign.

Thanks to all who showed up at the last meeting.
It has been put forward to ally ourselves with the Local LPT and to form a Ron Paul support group.
If I can get you to agree to a regular time and place to meet, I will advertise it in the newspaper.
Don't worry, I am talking about the free stuff.
I have not done this in the past because, it is worse to advertise and not show up, than to never had advertised at all. I will not advertise until we have a core of regulars I can count on to show up.
I'd still like to keep our meeting "related" to the local  REC's. Helping local candidates is in our best long term interest.
The next meeting is  tentatively  March 25th at the Las Vegas buffet just off I-4 and 535.

 Hello All

I would like to host a gathering of Ron Paul supporters from both the RP and LPT. I think this is an issue we can unite behind.
I am hoping we can jump start the Osceola and Lake county LPT's, as well as build support from the Liberty minded RP's.

Our meeting will be March 25th , at the Las Vegas Buffet 7-9pm.
Las Vegas Buffet is located at:

Kissimmee.
It is between markers 10 and 11. It is east of interstate 4 and west of Poinciana Blvd.
Telephone number 407-397-1288.

This looked like the most central location for Polk, Osceola and Lake counties. It is not far from I-4.

Instead of concentrating on the 15% we disagree about, lets unite under the 85% we do agree about.  Helping  Ron Paul make a good showing in the primary is a goal we can all agree upon.

It could not be further from the truth. Slander I say.
I totally support many of the LP's goals, I just don't think it is effective to concentrate on the 15% anybody disagrees on.
I get things done by killing anti-liberty ideas in major party committees, not by complaining about them afterward when they are law.

Same with Jeb. Getting results is more important than getting credit.

Again this is intended as a non-partisan meeting and is open to anyone with the intent of assisting Dr. Ron "Dr. No"  Paul US Rep, Tx. in his US Presidential campaign bid. I intend to be there and hope you will too.

Scott A.
Hello All

I would like to host a gathering of Ron Paul supporters from both the RP and LPT. I think this is an issue we can unite behind.
I am hoping we can jump start the Osceola and Lake county LPT's, as well as build support from the Liberty minded RP's.

Our meeting will be, Sunday night, March 25th , at the Las Vegas Buffet 7-9pm.
Las Vegas Buffet is located at:
5269 W. Irlo Bronson Hwy, (US 192)

 To OUR success!
 R. B. Lee

his outlook for the war, etc. etc.

This will definitely advance his campaign so please distribute it far and wide.
Thanks,
Yvonne>>

Hello Yvonne.
I wouldn't be so hasty there. The first step is to win the Republican primary, so I would not lead with our chins.
The RP is full of patriots who believe we need to fight back since the 9-11 attacks.
If you don't know how many and which Nations were involved in the 9-11 attacks, please don't respond.
If you don't know what Salman Pak was, please don't respond.
The drive by media has not been your friend, and we don't need to waste time arguing about it. I don't have time to enlighten you.
We need to work together to get Ron Paul elected. That needs to be everyone's focus. Not whether we personally agree or disagree on single issues.
We need to concentrate on the 85% positions we share, not the 15% we don't.
The good Doctor will get to make informed decisions on the conduct of this Worldwide War when he is debriefed after he wins the election.
That is the goal, win the election.
I have faith the Good Doctor will be "Goal driven, not Poll driven" and he will put National Security as his first priority. Otherwise I would not support his effort to become my President.

Likewise, we don't need to lead with legalizing Drugs and Prostitution as talking points.
I am not advocating lying to the Voters about our positions like the Democrat party does, but we can't highlight controversy and hope to win.
We need to change the subject to the issues that the Voters agree with.
Republican voters.
 The primary comes first.
If you want to pick an issue to highlight, how about the Fair tax or Cutting spending? De-funding NPR and the NEA also play well to the RP base.

This is winnable. But it is going to take lots of hard work from the grass roots.
 This means you.
Many RP insiders know they don't really have a team that can Beat Hillary/Obama.
Ron Paul can, if the LP and RP both support him.
The primary is the first step.
The RP is already 40-50% libertarian.
With enough LP voters coming in and helping in the RP primary, we actually have a very good chance if you think about it.
Our biggest hurdle is the Lame stream media ignoring us and those who keep saying "we can't win".
Ron Paul was on Fox because of calls to the station in protest of his being ignored. Keep up the pressure y'all.
Can you imagine the consternation it will cause them when the Doctor starts winning states?
Remember and take heart that New Hampshire is the Free State, and it is early in the primary season.
This is a huge advantage to us. We can win there, have faith.
Pray for Tim Condon and the Porcupines to get their NH Ron Paul Chapter going.
I have a van and a hammer, if someone wants to fund me, I'd happily go and pound signs all over the free state. (even in the snow!)
I hope we get a good turn out tomorrow. Many hands make light work. We need to get the Florida chapters going.
We need you, each and every one of you.
This is the chance of a lifetime to advance the cause of Liberty. Get excited.
Let us surprise them with our numbers, let our passion be the momentum and let's ride this train to Victory!
 To Our Success!
 R. B. Lee

P. S.  If you don't like me personally, work with us now and I will let you hit me in the face with a cake after we win.

Ron Paul's Texas Straight Talk - A weekly Column

October 15, 2001

Effective and Practical Counter-Terrorism Measures

Over the past month I have introduced several bills designed to address terrorism and make Americans feel more secure. While many counter-terrorism proposals were considered in Congress last week, my belief is that the most effective steps we can take do not infringe upon the civil liberties of American citizens. In fact, I believe only a free society can ever be truly secure. The goal should be to make terrorists feel threatened, not the American people.

Here are some concrete steps Congress can take immediately to make our borders, our cities, and our skies more secure:

Arm Pilots: It is unthinkable to leave pilots defenseless in the cockpit after the events of September 11th. We trust pilots to operate multimillion dollar machines filled with human cargo, yet incredibly we do not trust them with firearms. While airport security certainly can be strengthened, pilots must have the choice to carry weapons as a last line of defense against future hijacking attempts.

Immigration Restrictions: Common sense tells us that we should not currently be admitting aliens from nations that sponsor or harbor terrorists. Remember, only U.S. citizens have constitutional rights; non-citizens are in the country at the discretion of the State department. While we should generally welcome people from around the world whenever possible, we cannot allow potential enemies or terrorists to enter the country now under any circumstances. My legislation would restrict immigration, including the granting of student visas, by individuals from nations listed as terrorist threats by the State department.

Better intelligence gathering: Burdensome regulations and bureaucratic turf wars hamper the ability of federal law enforcement personnel to share information about terrorists. My proposal would slash regulations and make sure the CIA, FBI, State department, Justice department, and military work together to coordinate anti-terrorism efforts.

Harsher criminal penalties for terrorists: The federal statute of limitations for terrorist offenses should be eliminated, so that suspects can never breathe easy even 10 or 20 years from now. Jail sentences and penalties should be increased, and the death penalty should be possible for many offenses. Terrorist attempts and conspiracies should be treated as harshly as completed acts.

Letters of marque and reprisal: This constitutional tool can be used to give President Bush another weapon in the war on terrorism. Congress can issue letters of marque against terrorists and their property that authorize the President to name private sources who can capture or kill our enemies. This method works in conjunction with our military efforts, creating an incentive for people on the ground close to Bin Laden to kill or capture him and his associates. Letters of marque are especially suited to the current war on terrorism, which will be fought against individuals who can melt into the civilian population or hide in remote areas. The goal is to avail ourselves of the intelligence of private parties, who may stand a better chance of finding Bin Laden than we do through a conventional military invasion. Letters of marque also may help us avoid a wider war with Afghanistan or other Middle Eastern nations.

End legal preferences for terrorist suspects: Congress should clarify all federal criminal statutes to insure that so-called "extralegal" preferences for criminal terrorist suspects are eliminated. In some past terrorist investigations, federal rules have been interpreted to require law enforcement to show something more than standard probable cause to obtain warrants. Law enforcement officials should never have to demonstrate anything more than standard probable cause when seeking a warrant in the war on terrorism.

Jessie!

That's Awesome!
Every little bit helps and we need lots of bits.
 The Sunday meeting was mixed.
 We had a good turnout.
We had reps from Polk, Orange and Seminole LP show up. The regional Rep for Osceola showed up and of course RLC Central was represented by yours truly.
I was surprised that support for Ron Paul was not a slam dunk in the LP. Apparently that little R behind the name is too much for some of the purists. Let us work on converting them.
I was able to forge an alliance with the LP members who do support Ron Paul.
So we have a van, a few willing activists, a phone caller and a computer/email person. That is a fine foundation.
 What we agreed on.
1. Monthly meetings in public.  This allows us to recruit new members.
We chose the 4th Sunday of each month. We also agreed to do it in LBV, that is the st rt 535 exit off I-4.
Scott Allen and myself will scout the area to find a meeting place ( that is free and quiet)
This was the compromise between the Polk and Orange county LP's.
2. We will support the Ron Paul run as individuals, not as LP or RLC.
3. We will support the formation of an Osceola LP. The new members will be attracted to the Ron Paul candidacy.
4. We will support and campaign for the repeal of Florida property taxes.
5. We will support any and all restrictions on the use of Eminent Domain for private use.

Next months agenda:
What can we do to Support Ron Paul locally?
Calls/emails to media to protest the blackout.
 Find Local candidates to support.
 Recruit new members (all clubs)
Contact local CPR and Log Cabin Republicans to join combined effort
 Meeting place: acceptable or not?
 Fundraising: find/appoint Treasurer
 Pass the hat
Discuss Big Event ( Boortz? Stossel? Burg? P Blumel as speakers) (date? Place? 07 or 08?)
Do we have time to do anything for Tax Freedom day in May or is it June?

If you are within driving distance and you didn't make it and you want to help the Good Doctor, Shame on you. But we will look for you next time. It is never too late to help.
I hope this  after action report excites you.
Here is some ammo to use against those who say our goal is hopeless. http://poll.pollhost.com/Q3lDb25zZXJ2YXRpdmUJMTE3NDE4MzI1OQlGRjAwMDAJRkZGRjAwCUFyaWFsCUFzc29ydGVkCTA/

Now, think back in time to Bill Clintons odds in early 1991. George H. W Bush had a 85% approval rating then.
This is winnable. Don't let the negative Nellie destroy our best chance for a victory for liberty in a lifetime.
 To OUR success!

Warrior Ethos

"Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for?" - William J. Bennett - in a lecture to the United States Naval Academy, November 24, 1997

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: "Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident." This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another.

Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.

I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin's egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers, and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful. For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.

"Then there are the wolves," the old war veteran said, "and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy." Do you believe there are wolves out there that will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

"Then there are sheepdogs," he went on, "and I'm a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf."

If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.

Let me expand on this old soldier's excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that the sheep live in denial, which is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world. They can accept the fact that fires can happen, which is why they want fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, fire alarms and fire exits throughout their kids' schools.

But many of them are outraged at the idea of putting an armed police officer in their kid's school. Our children are thousands of times more likely to be killed or seriously injured by school violence than fire, but the sheep's only response to the possibility of violence is denial. The idea of someone coming to kill or harm their child is just too hard, and so they chose the path of denial.

The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.

Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn't tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, "Baa."

Until the wolf shows up! Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog.

The students, the victims, at Columbine High School were big, tough high school students, and under ordinary circumstances they would not have had the time of day for a police officer. They were not bad kids; they just had nothing to say to a cop. When the school was under attack, however, and SWAT teams were clearing the rooms and hallways, the officers had to physically peel those clinging, sobbing kids off of them. This is how the little lambs feel about their sheepdog when the wolf is at the door.

Look at what happened after September 11, 2001 when the wolf pounded hard on the door. Remember how America, more than ever before, felt differently about their law enforcement officers and military personnel? Remember how many times you heard the word hero?

Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, "Thank God I wasn't on one of those planes." The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, "Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference." When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference.

There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, but he does have one real advantage. Only one. And that is that he is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population.

There was research conducted a few years ago with individuals convicted of violent crimes. These cons were in prison for serious, predatory crimes of violence: assaults, murders and killing law enforcement officers. The vast majority said that they specifically targeted victims by body language: slumped walk, passive behavior and lack of awareness. They chose their victims like big cats do in Africa, when they select one out of the herd that is least able to protect itself.

Some people may be destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe that most people can choose which one they want to be, and I'm proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.

Seven months after the attack on September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer was honored in his hometown of Cranbury, New Jersey. Todd, as you recall, was the man on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania who called on his cell phone to alert an operator from United Airlines about the hijacking. When he learned of the other three passenger planes that had been used as weapons, Todd dropped his phone and uttered the words, "Let's roll," which authorities believe was a signal to the other passengers to confront the terrorist hijackers. In one hour, a transformation occurred among the passengers - athletes, business people and parents. -- From sheep to sheepdogs and together they fought the wolves, ultimately saving an unknown number of lives on the ground.

"Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?"

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

Here is the point I like to emphasize; especially to the thousands of police officers and soldiers I speak to each year. In nature the sheep, real sheep, are born as sheep. Sheepdogs are born that way, and so are wolves. They didn't have a choice. But you are not a critter. As a human being, you can be whatever you want to be. It is a conscious, moral decision.

If you want to be a sheep, then you can be a sheep and that is okay, but you must understand the price you pay. When the wolf comes, you and your loved ones are going to die if there is not a sheepdog there to protect you. If you want to be a wolf, you can be one, but the sheepdogs are going to hunt you down and you will never have rest, safety, trust or love. But if you want to be a sheepdog and walk the warrior's path, then you must make a conscious and moral decision every day to dedicate, equip and prepare yourself to thrive in that toxic, corrosive moment when the wolf comes knocking at the door.

For example, many officers carry their weapons in church. They are well concealed in ankle holsters, shoulder holsters or inside-the-belt holsters tucked into the small of their backs. Anytime you go to some form of religious service, there is a very good chance that a police officer in your congregation is carrying. You will never know if there is such an individual in your place of worship, until the wolf appears to massacre you and your loved ones.

I was training a group of police officers in Texas, and during the break, one officer asked his friend if he carried his weapon in church. The other cop replied, "I will never be caught without my gun in church." I asked why he felt so strongly about this, and he told me about a cop he knew who was at a church massacre in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1999. In that incident, a mentally deranged individual came into the church and opened fire, gunning down fourteen people. He said that officer believed he could have saved every life that day if he had been carrying his gun. His own son was shot, and all he could do was throw himself on the boy's body and wait to die. That cop looked me in the eye and said, "Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?"

Some individuals would be horrified if they knew this police officer was carrying a weapon in church. They might call him paranoid and would probably scorn him. Yet these same individuals would be enraged and would call for "heads to roll" if they found out that the airbags in their cars were defective, or that the fire extinguisher and fire sprinklers in their kids' school did not work. They can accept the fact that fires and traffic accidents can happen and that there must be safeguards against them.

Their only response to the wolf, though, is denial, and all too often their response to the sheepdog is scorn and disdain. But the sheepdog quietly asks himself, "Do you have and idea how hard it would be to live with yourself if your loved ones were attacked and killed, and you had to stand there helplessly because you were unprepared for that day?"

It is denial that turns people into sheep. Sheep are psychologically destroyed by combat because their only defense is denial, which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up.

Denial kills you twice. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: you didn't bring your gun, you didn't train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by your fear helplessness and horror at your moment of truth.

Gavin de Becker puts it like this in Fear Less, his superb post-9/11 book, which should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with our current world situation: "...denial can be seductive, but it has an insidious side effect. For all the peace of mind deniers think they get by saying it isn't so, the fall they take when faced with new violence is all the more unsettling."

Denial is a save-now-pay-later scheme, a contract written entirely in small print, for in the long run, the denying person knows the truth on some level.

And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes.

If you are warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be "on" 24/7, for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself... "Baa."

This business of being a sheep or a sheep dog is not a yes-no dichotomy. It is not an all-or-nothing, either-or choice. It is a matter of degrees, a continuum. On one end is an abject, head-in-the-sand-sheep and on the other end is the ultimate warrior. Few people exist completely on one end or the other. Most of us live somewhere in between. Since 9-11 almost everyone in America took a step up that continuum, away from denial. The sheep took a few steps toward accepting and appreciating their warriors, and the warriors started taking their job more seriously. The degree to which you move up that continuum, away from sheephood and denial, is the degree to which you and your loved ones will survive, physically and psychologically at your moment of truth.

I am very interested in attending this event, I think that Andy is
the ideal candidate for this county. There seems to be some
