Hi, Chris!! (waving madly) - <G>

Michelle,
I recently joined RIGHT. Waving "Hello" to a fellow member. <G> They are

little state! Which Chapter do you belong to?

Does everyone here know about RIGHT? I belong to RIGHT, a statewide
organization offering homeschoolers the opportunity to network with
other homeschoolers in Rhode Island. I couldn't have survived this
first year homeschooling without them. On the first of every month
(year-round), I get a 20-page (give-or-take) publication called Home
Spun News, FULL of stuff to do with other RIGHT members. For example,
we have a spelling bee (the winner went to the State Spelling Bee and
competed against the traditional schools), art shows, field trips,
classes, parties, social clubs, etcetera.
Annual dues is $20, payable by check to RIGHT, PO Box 11, Hope, RI,
02831. They'll pro-rate your dues. Membership dues for the year are
renewed in June.
RIGHT is by far the BEST thing going!! You'll make lots of friends!
~Michelle
Hi, everyone! Some people on another RI message board have mentioned
that a few conservation groups are organizing "salamander crossings"
for tonight, and I wanted to tell you that you can do this project
with your kids!! Every year in early spring, when the temperatures
rise above freezing and the other conditions are favorable...meaning
DARK and RAINY...hundreds of salamanders and frogs (especially wood
frogs right now) come out of their winter burrows and begin migrating
to vernal pools to breed! A vernal pool is a temporary "overgrown
puddle" that fills up in the spring with rainwater and melted snow,
eventually drying up and staying empty until the following spring.
The amphibians go for vernal pools because there aren't any fish
there to eat them! Sadly, we're in a severe drought, and the vernal
pools that we usually see in spring are all dried up. This spells
disaster for the breeding season, and will impact amphibian
populations dramatically this year.
If you have any vernal pools in your neighborhood, though, tonight is
going to be a perfect night for amphibian-spotting as they begin to
emerge and cross streets everywhere to get to their homes! Dress warm
and waterproof, and take a flashlight...wear light-colored clothes
with reflective tape if possible. Stay safe!
Cool website:

Yes, I do plan on homeschooling, althoughI think we
all really homeschool until most parents send theur
kids off to school, they just don't think of it that
way because of pre-concieved notions of "schooling"
and learning :)

Hi, Caroline! I don't know if you've looked into homeschooling
groups, but I belong to RIGHT (Rhode Island Guild of Home Teachers).
Every month I get a newsletter full of opportunities to get together
with other homeschoolers (field trips, Mom's Night Outs, and other
get-togethers). You can take part in statewide activities
and "chapter" activities. It's only $20 a year, and they prorate the
subscription fee if you join after the school year has started.

Hi, Lori! It's the email addresses in the messages that bug me. :)
Yahoo! has made it so much easier to get flamed or harassed or just
plain spammed. Even though the emails are truncated (you can't read
the entire email address), they're easy to figure out. Since another
club I belonged to became a group, the number of spams I receive has
dramatically increased! I may just start another email account for
personal stuff.
Is your autism spectrum disorders board on Yahoo?
~Michelle
Hi Caroline, welcome! What makes you interested in a home schooler's group?
Do you plan to teach those toddlers at home when they become school-aged?

Hi Sunny,
I am in South County and there is an active home schoolers group in my area.
I haven't gotten really involved with them only because I have no time. I
met some of them at one event at the beginning of the school year, but I
haven't followed through. If you were interested in them I would dig up the
contact info for you. Welcome to this list-I would hope we could "grow" it,
because I communicate more readily by e-mail than in any other manner, again
because of time/convenience.

Hi Sunny!
Yes, I walked in and I think there are only a few of us here! I joined
because my partner (long-distance at this point) was thinking about
homeschooling his son, but is not doing it currently. I am over here in
Seattle, WA where homeschooling is HUGE! I have homeschooled my son for 5
years now.. Are you trying to find ways to organize a group that meets in
real life or are you wanting a list online?
Let me know, just because I am in Seattle doesn't mean I can't help you find
out :) My friend lives in Newport and I am sure he knows some ways to get
that done.

First and most important- Happy Thanksgiving from your NetHomeSchool.com family! Safe travels to you and your family during the holiday season.
Here's a neat thing do for Thanksgiving day that will help you and your family remember to count your blessings.
If you have a alarm clock or clock that will ring on the hour it will make this easier. Give each person a few small pieces of paper. At the top of every hour, have each person write down something they are thankful for. Collect all the papers, and when you say your Thanksgiving prayer, have someone read each of the pieces of paper!

TV, Computers, and CD players can limit your child's creativity. The average preschooler watches over three hours of TV a day, and elementary kids watch over five hours a day. Help your kids be creative on their own. I encourage my kids to play with one of my favorite kids toys - Lego's. I think these really help a child's imagination, and they can be used by a boy or a girl. Another thing I do to encourage imagination is to take a few minutes out of my day to spend time looking at the clouds with my son. I ask him what he sees in the clouds. I'm not saying that all TV is bad, but take a moment and think of the things that you can do to help your kids imagination grow. Give your kids of any age some unstructured free time!
