According to the Vicki Welch Book "And They Were Related, Too"
Pomp Henry married Betsey Rodman daughter of Abiather Rodman. See page
52.

Pomp Henry and Betsey Rodman Henry had a son
Abiather Rodman Henry.

On page 48 in the book it states that Abiather Rodman Henry was named after his
maternal grandfather, a native american of Nehantic, Pequot and possibly
Narragansett descent.

The Abiather Rodman mentioned supporting Pomp might be the son??

Deeds

The most important type of land records are deeds. Deeds can point to a buyer
or seller residing in another place. They can also confirm the name of a spouse
and the names of other owners of the adjacent properties. Since families were
once much closer than in our modern family structures, these adjacent property
owners frequently were related to one another. Deeds have proven to be far more
reliable than census records as a source for verifying the location of
particular persons at a specific point in time. Deeds are documents by which
title to real property is conveyed from one party to another. The conveyer or
seller of property is known as the grantor. The receiver or buyer of property
is known as the grantee. There are various types of deeds.

Warranty Deed: Most common type of deed, used to convey title from a party who
has clear title to the property and pledges to defend that title.

Quitclaim Deeds: Constitutes a release of whatever right or interest the grantor
or grantors may have in the property being conveyed. This form of deed is often
used when a landowner dies intestate and the land descends to his heirs. To
convey the land to a new owner, the heirs, either individually or as a group,
convey their interests in the land by means of one or more quitclaim deeds.

Deed of Trust: Form of mortgage whereby title to property is conveyed to one or
more trustees in order to secure payment of a debt. When the debt has been
paid, a deed of release is executed, which restores clear title to the original
owner. If default occurs, the trustee disposes of the property through public
sale and uses the proceeds from the sale to satisfy the debt. In a deed of
trust, the grantor is known as the party of the first part, the grantee as the
party of the second part, and the trustee as the party of the third part.

Deed of Gift: Warranty deed that conveys property without a normal purchase
price. This deed is most often used to convey land from a father to a son. The
consideration may be stated in terms such as "for the natural love and affection
I bear him" or "as long as he/she provides care for his elderly mother."

Lease and Release: In some colonies the device of a lease and release was used
to avoid payment to the colonial government of a land transfer fee. The
property owner would lease the land for a period of time to the person who
wished to purchase it. Subsequently, for a fee the owner would execute a
release transferring all remaining rights to the land. The entire process had
the same legal effect as the execution of a deed.

Dower Release: This may be recorded immediately following a deed. By this
document the grantor's wife released her dower rights in the land being
conveyed.

The information contained in deeds vary depending on the amount of information
collected and circumstances existing at the time the deed was written. The most
important pieces of information usually include the following elements:

     Date of conveyance.
Name of the grantor and place of residence.
Name of the grantee and place of residence.
Monetary consideration or other motive for the conveyance.
Description of the property being conveyed.
Signature or mark of the grantor.
     Signatures of witnesses.
Date or dates of acknowledgment by the grantor and recording of the deed.

This is an important building block in the foundation of genealogical research.
Information found in deeds often point researchers towards other records.

I was glad that a discourse is still going on about the John Greenes of early
Rhode Island. Although, William Wright, you pointed out that the records have
been available for 150+ years and studied and discussed.

I want to make only one point today and that is about how we can ALL miss a clue
in a record. I have had copies of the Green pages of John O Austin's
Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island since the 1990. I have studied them
each year since then and am ashamed to say that I missed a most important clue
all this time.

Those of you who have THE book use it; for those who do not, copy and paste the
address into your browser and follow the directions:

The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island: Comprising Three Generations of ...
By John Osborne Austin, George Andrews Moriarty

Search for Greene: page 86, 87, 88, 89 are the three John Greenes: Kings Town,
Newport, Warwick

We are concerned with th p 86 and 88. If I am using the resource right, there
are three columns - which gives us the three generations (clue from the title).

Page 86 in the left column for John Greene of Kings Town is John and Joan with
their death dates. In the center is John and Abigail with John's birth being
listed as 6 Jun 1651.

Page 88 the same for John of Warwick - only you have two generations and two
columns to the right before you get to the generation with a John's being born 6
Nov 1651.

This does present a problem, but I contend we now have the birthdates of the two
Johns born 1651. According to Vital Records of Rhode Island by James N Arnold
(which is available to search on Ancestry.com) in the Warwick town records, the
son of John and Ann Almy Greene born in 1651 is assigned the 6 June. Apparently
the records where John Greene of Kings Town's son John was born were destroyed.

I am thereby stating that According to Austin, there were two John Greenes born
in 1651 one exactly 5 months before the other. Since the Warwick John has
records to substantiate his birth, I am adopting in my genealogical data base
that John Greene husband of Abigail Wardwell was born 6 Nov 1651.

Hi Charlie,

There was a John A Rathbun, age 71 in the 1910 census. He had a wife
Harriet, and married daughter Elizabeth R. aged 41 married to

Alfred Butler [looks like that to me but was indexed as Butherus]

He was listed as an undertaker, but he could have been the postmaster as
well.

I can send you the sheet if you think it's him.

> Page 86 in the left column for John Greene of Kings Town is John and Joan with
their death dates. In the center is John and Abigail with John's birth being
listed as 6 Jun 1651.

This is incorrect in more ways than one. First the date of birth. The only
information that we know of his birth is from his 1729 will that gives his age
as "in his 79th year". Count backwards and you come up with 1650-51. Then look
around and you find the birth on 6 June 1651 of a baby named John Greene in the
Warwick records and put the two together, ignoring the names of this John's
parents.

The second error is that this John Greene who married Abigail Wardwell was not
the son of John Greene of Quidnesset (or Kingstown as Austin identifies him).
For a full discussion of this take a look at an article by Louise Prosser Bates,
"John Greene of Newport and Narragansett" in Rhode Island Historical Society
Collections, XI:69-78; XII:15-26. The article was reprinted by Genealogical
Publishing Company in 1983, "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families."

What Mrs. Bates did was to read the original East Greenwich records. The EG
clerk very carefully distinguished between two different John Greenes named in
the records for 1685. He identified one as simply John Greene (This would be the
John who married Abigail). The other he identified as Lieut John Greene of New
Port (This was mis-read by Huling as John Greene of New York an error that
subsequently has been copied over and over and even embellished by LaMance with
a pure fictional tale of a family feud resulting in John Jr running off to New
York.) Lieut John Greene of Newport is John Jr (not called Jr because his father
is deceased) son of John of Quidnesset.

Recent DNA evidence demonstrates the accuracy of Mrs. Bates' analysis. I have 16
matching test Y-chromosome DNA test results from men descended from John of
Quidnesset. Some of these men have documented lines of descent. For descendants
of John and Abigail, I have 3 matching test results. Unfortunately, each of
these lines of descent have a missing generation, but all three men claim RI
ancestry, are otherwise unrelated, but have matching DNA. Likewise I have
matching DNA test results for 3 men descended from John Greene of Warwick. Two
of these men have documented lines of descent back to John of Warwick.

What we need is a male Greene who can prove his line of descent from John and
Abigail (Wardwell) Greene to have his y-chromosome DNA tested.

With the DNA evidence collected to date, neither of the three John Greenes in RI
in the mid-1600s have a recent common ancestor. The idea that John of Q and John
of Warwick were cousins was another of LaMance's fictions. The DNA evidence
places their common ancestors back a couple millennia or more. The DNA of the
John who married Abigail also shows he does not have a recent common ancestor
with either of the other two Johns.

> Page 88 the same for John of Warwick - only you have two generations and two
columns to the right before you get to the generation with a John's being born 6
Nov 1651.
>
> This does present a problem, but I contend we now have the birthdates of the
two Johns born 1651. According to Vital Records of Rhode Island by James N
Arnold (which is available to search on Ancestry.com) in the Warwick town
records, the son of John and Ann Almy Greene born in 1651 is assigned the 6
June. Apparently the records where John Greene of Kings Town's son John was
born were destroyed.

Or never existed. Austin appears to be the only source of this 6 Nov date. As
suggested above, I think this was confusion with the age of John of East
Greenwich and Coventry as stated in his 1729 will and the November month was a
typographical error. Read my discussion above The John of East Greenwich and
Coventry who married Abigail Wardwell we not the son of John Greene of Kings
Town (Quidnesset). The parentage of neither John Greene of Kings Town/Quidnesset
and John Greene of East Greenwich and Coventry who married abigail are unknown
and they are not even closely related.

LaMance ("The Greene Family" 1904)gives the birthdate of the John who married
Abigail as 1645, but does not tell us how she arrived at that guess. She says
that he was not born on 16 (sic) June 1651 which was the date of birth of John,
son of John and Anne.

Austin is an excellent secondary source. He either documents his information or
it usually is easily documented. This 6 Nov 1651 date is an exception. Even
Huling's Greene genealogy published in 1883 in "Narragansett Historical Record"
shows the John who married Abigal as being born 6 June 1651. Frank L. Greene's
1893 Greene genealogy also lists the birthdate of John who married Abigail as 6
June 1651. He either was copying Huling or made the same mistake Huling did.
Austin did not have a source of this date available to him that has since been
destroyed.

Walter and Ella Greene in the 1981 edition of their Greene genealogy correctly
list the birth of the John who married Abigail as 1651 and base it on his 1729
will.

All of these early genealogies (including Walter and Ella) err in showing the
John who married Abigail as the son of John Greene of Quidnesset. Few people
pick up on Mrs. Bates' 1918-19 article and even fewer bother to read the
original East Greenwich records like she did.

Do you have  a copy of William Lawrence Alger's death certificate from RI State
Archives?

That should tell you where he was buried & then you could contact the cemetery
to find out who else is buried with him.  Presumably his wife Blanche will be
with him & then you can learn her DOD/date of burial from the cemetery records.

I looked at the listing for Blanche in the 1964 directory. She lived at 31R
Parade Street.

If you look up that address, you will see that it is the Park View Nursing
Home. Lucky for you,

it still exists! http://www.eldercareri.com/Nursing%20Homes/parkview.htm

Now, I don't know if this was a nursing home, or some kind of elderly
housing complex/nursing home combination?

You should call them, and ask what the set up of the facility was back then.

My initial plan was to see who else lived at this address. I was thinking
she lived with a family member.

Do you have an ancestry.com subscription?

You can put the street name in the keyword box and leave out the names,
however, I realized when I put in 31 parade that

Blanche's listing wasn't coming up, so I just put in Parade. there are too
many listings for me to look at, but if you have a

subscription, you can check this out, or do it at the library. I looked
through all the A, I, and J

I did find three others living there so far, plus a listing in the City
Information Section for Parkview Nursing Home at 31R Parade St

under the Nursing Home Listings. This directory also has a street listing.
Under 31 Parade, it just has Parkview Nursing Home, and the

phone number. It does not list individuals which makes me think she was a
resident of the home.

Abrams, Rachel 31R Parade St

Alger, Blanche 31R Parade St

Armitch, Grace Mrs. 31R Parade St

Iemma, James 31R Parade St

Jarvie, Robert 31R Parade St

If you know the funeral homes the other family members used, try them.
Families tend to use

the same home, so you might find some information that way.

What do you know about Blanche's family? Parents, siblings? You didn't
mention them. She may

have been buried with someone on her side of the family since she was
divorced, or maybe she went

to live with one of them in another state?

If you have only looked at ancestry.com for the directories, try to get to
the Prov. Public Library and look

at the later directories. They have them in book form and on microfilm. If
you can't find her in 1965 or 1966,

then maybe she died between 1963-1966.

Hope this helps a little,

Lisa

Yes, that's what it is today, and in 1964 it was called Park View Nursing
Home too, but it had those individuals

listed separately in the directory, so the living arrangement there must
have been different than today.

I was able to see the building on bing.com maps. It is a multistory
apartment looking building - not a new structure.

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for all your suggestions. I never thought to try to find out what kind
of a place it was. I think I will try and call them tomorrow to see if they have
records. Her children have all died now. I have tried contacting her
grandchildren, they do not seem to want to respond. I have one more to try to
contact.

I will be working on the suggestions you gave me. I just would like to know when
she died and where she is buried. She is my father's 1/2 sister we only found
out about her through an old will from 1925.

Sometimes it's frustrating and/or heartbreaking not knowing.

Will keep you posted. Thanks for your help!

Are you in RI? If so, the quickest thing would be to check the directories
for next couple of years

beyond 1964. If you really get lucky her death date will be listed.

You can ask Park View if they used a particular undertaker if a resident
died who had no family.

They probably don't have records that go back that far, but you never know.

Let us know what they have to say. Hope you find something,

Lisa
