That is the price to pay for open membership lists. I maintain a church
email list on Yahoo, but the membership is moderated. You cannot send a
message to the list without being a member, so we have not had any problems
with spam. Unfortunately, moderating membership on this list would defeat
its purpose.

IT'S SIMPLE AND IT'S LEGAL!!!!!!! I found this on a bulletin board
and decided to try it a little while back, I was browsing through
news groups just as you are right now and came across a article
similar to this saying that you could make thousands of dollars
within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00!! So, I thought
yeah right. This must be a scam, but like most of us, I as curious,
so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send one dollar to each
of the six names and addresses stated in the article. You then delete
the first address and change the numbers. ( 2 becomes 1, 3 becomes 2,
etc.) place your own name and address on the bottom of the list at
number 6 and post the article to at least 200 newsgroups. (there are
thousands) No catch that was it. Therefore, after talking to a few
people and thinking it over I decided to try it. What do I have to
lose except 6 stamps and $6.00 right? Then I invested the measly six
dollars. WELL GUESS WHAT!!! Within 7 days, I started getting money in
the mail!!! I was shocked. I thought it was going to stop but it just
kept coming. In my first week, I made $25.00. By the end of the
second week, I had $900.00. In the end of the third week, I made
$5,000.00!!! It's still growing right now. This is now my fourth week
and I have made a total of just over $38,000.00! Moreover, it's still
coming in rapidly. This is certainly worth $6.00 and 6 stamps. I have
spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works
and most importantly why it works…Also make sure that you print a
copy of this article NOW so you can get the information off of it as
you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly,
that you will start making more money than you possibly thought just
by doing something so easy!! SUGGESTION: READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE
CAREFULLY (Print it out or down load it) Follow the simple directions
and watch the money come in! It's easy. It's legal. And your
investment is only $6.00 (plus postage) IMPORTANT: This is not a rip
off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no
risk - it really works!!!!! If all of the following instructions are
adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE:
please follow these directions exactly and $50,000 or more can be
yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of
the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its
success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now
become a part of the mail order business. In this business, your
product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the
business of developing a mailing list. Many large corporations are
happy to pay big bucks for quality list. However, the money made from
the mailing list is secondary to the income, which is made from
people like you and me asking to be included to that list. Here are
the four steps to success: STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper
write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR
MAILING LIST." Now get 6 us 1dollar bills and place ONE inside EACH
of the six pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the
envelope to prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in each of the 6
envelopes and seal them. MAKE SURE THERE ARE ENOUGH STAMPS ON YOUR
ENVELOPES. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece
of paper stating the above phrase your name and address and a $1.00
bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY
LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for
it! Like most of us, I was a little skeptical and a little worried
about the legal aspects of it all. So, I checked it out with the U.S.
Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed
legal!!!!! Mail the six envelopes to the following addresses. #1)
B.M.Nsubuga 4380 Main St. Amherst,NY.14226 #2) Matt Snodgrass 2115
S.Osage Bartlesville,Ok.74003 #3) Mike Gordon 204 South Maple St.
Winchester,KY.40391 #4) Jeff Waldrop 39-A Lucy Rd. Laurel,MS.39443
#5) Brian Thompson 15 Briggs Pond Wy. Sharon, MA 02067 #6)Bob Coles
209 Crosby Ave. Kenmore, NY 14217
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move
the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc…) and add YOUR name
as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to but try
to keep this article as original as possible. Now post your amended
article to at least 200 news groups. ( I think there are 24,000
groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post , the
more money you make!** EVERYBODY AROUND THE WORLD CAN DO THIS BUT
REMEMBER TO PUT ENOUGH STAMPS ON YOUR ENVELOPES!!!!** This is
perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to title 18 sec. 1302
& 1341 of the postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for
your self and whenever you need money, you can use it again and
again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because
of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by carefully
adhering to the directions. Look at it this way, if you are of
integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many
others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain
every name and address sent to you, on either a computer or a hard
copy and keep the notes people sent you. This verifies that you are
truly providing a service. (Remember to wrap the $1 bill in the note
to prevent mail theft.) So, as each post is downloaded and the
directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for
their participation as a list developer with one dollar each. Your
name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name
reaches the #1 spot you will be receiving thousands of dollars in
CASH!!!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1 for each of the six
people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list and
you're in business! DIRECTIONS: HOW TO POST TO NEWS GROUPS STEP 1:
You do not need to retype this entire letter to do your own posting.
Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your
cursor to the bottom of this document, and select "copy" from the
edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's
memory. STEP 2: Open a blank notepad file and place your cursor at
the top of the blank page. From the edit menu, select "paste." This
will paste the copy of the letter into notepad so you can add your
name to the list. STEP 3: Save your new notepad file as a .txt file.
If you want to do your postings in different settings , you'll always
have this file to come back to. STEP 4: Use Netscape and Internet
Explorer and try searching for various news groups (on-line forums,
message boards, chat sites, discussions.) STEP 5: Visit these message
boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the
text of this letter and selecting "paste" from the edit menu. Fill in
the subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they
scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the
post message button. You're done with the first one! CONGRATULATIONS,…
THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different news groups and
post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take 30 seconds for
each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN (MESSAGE
BOARDS ETC.) THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A
MINIMUM OF 200. That's it! You will begin receiving money from around
the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O. Box due
to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay
anonymous, you can invent a name to use as long as the postman will
deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE THE ADDRESS IS CORRECT** Let me break it
down, say I receive only 5 replies, so then I made $5 with my name at
#6 on the letter. Now each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1 made
the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 people
respond to the original 5 people. That is another $25 for me. Now
those 25 people make the MINIMUM 200 post with my name at number 4
and only 5 replies each, I will make $125. Now, those 125 people post
the MINIMUM 200 postings with my name at #3 and only get 5 replies
each, I will make an additional $626! Ok, now here's the fun part
each of those 625 people post a MINIMUM 200 with my name at #2 ant
they only get 5 replies that just made me $3,125!!! Those 3125 people
send a MINIMUM 200 postings and they only get 5 replies each with my
name at #1, I will receive $15,625!!! With an original investment of
$6!!!! AMAZING!!!! . When your name is no longer on the list, you
just take the latest postings in the news groups and send out another
$6 to names on the list putting yourself at #6 and start posting
again. Thousands of people are joining the internet each day and they
are reading articles like these just as you are right now. So this
can never be played out just keep it going and you can make tons of
money too!!!! Please try it now and make big bucks in a few short
weeks!!!!!!
Camille Durfee will be attending Handi-Ham camp in Minnesota
from August 27th - September 3rd working toward her first
license. The camp runs a radio station during the week
(details below), and I am sure that Camille would love to
hear from folks back home. So if you get a chance to be on
HF while she's away, consider giving the Handi-Ham station
a call.
The Radio Camp station, using callsigns W0EQO and W5W, will be
on the air through the week. A special certificate will be
available for working the camp station. Some suggested
frequencies are:
1.900 MHz: 20:00 CDT Daily (SARA informal evening net)
3.925 MHz: 10:00 CDT M-S (PICONET)
7.050 MHz CW At various times through the day.

Visit the ARRL web site,
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2002/08/15/101/?nc=1
to read about the latest Petition of Rulemaking before the FCC.
I urge you to follow the instructions in the ARRL page, and go to the
FCC Electronic Comments section and petition AGAINST RM-10521.
An amateur from Virginia has petitioned the FCC to allocate eight
channels in the 70-cm band for use by visitors from Europe and the
United Kingdom with Personal Mobile Radio (PMR 446) transceivers. The
recently authorized PMR 446 is similar to the US Family Radio Service.
Dr Michael Trahos, KB4PGC, a physician from Alexandria, filed the
petition last January, saying it would help to promote international
goodwill. The FCC on August 8 designated the petition as RM-10521 and
invited comments on the proposal within 30 days. (Why the FCC would
not just dismiss his proposal, I don't know, but now is our chance to
comment. As of this morning, I noted that only four hams from NC have
commented.)

The location for the Triangle East Amateur Radio Association (TEARA)

from the Smithfield Public Library to the Smithfield Fire Station due

The fire station is located about one block from the library on Fourth

If you are coming west from Raleigh, it will be a right turn from
Market onto Fourth. From Goldsboro, it will be a left turn. (NOTE:
Some interesctions downtown do not allow left turns. I'm not certain
about this one, so you may need to circle the block to get onto
Fourth.) Directions will be posted on the library doors on exam days
directing people to the fire station, and staff will be aware of the
move as well.
Dates for the remainder of the year are as follows:
August 17

I used an extension(sunbelt rentals) for a bobcat we got down just 6ft. The
ground has to be level about 4ft dia. The bar that the auger attaches to on the
Bobcat must be able to go all the way down to get the full 6ft. Make sure you
use only a 12in auger, and take your time back filling the hole. I put about 6in
in an packed it(I used a 10ft length off stair railing) then added a little
water, packed it again. I did a couple feet a day. I put mine up last June and
have left it up with some good winds and did not get any movement.(75ft with a

Subject: [RARS] Hole for tower Mounting
Does anyone have a suggestion for how to dig a 6 ft. post hole for
mounting a tower ground post in our hard clay soil? The local rental
places that I have tried say their rental power units for post holes
will only bore to 4 ft. maximum. I have a friend with a farm tractor
& post hole auger, and his has the same limitation. My old E-Z way
tower ground post which is 11 ft long, requires that 6 feet be
mounted in the ground to facilitate the tilt over feature. I just
don't think hand post hole diggers can get the job done. Any
suggestions.

Many of you know or have met Wayne Williams, K4MOB. Wayne has been diagnosed
with liver cancer. He's at home and I and several others that have worked with
him in his role as the South East Repeater Association (SERA) Repeater Journal
Editor have visited him over the last week.
I was there on Friday. His spirits and outlook is good, but the cancer is really
taking its toll on him. If you'd like to send a card, thanking him for all he's
done for amateur radio over the years, now is the time.
Wayne, his wife Gerry and sons ran Williams Radio since back in the early 70's.
He has been a regular at hamfests for over three decades attending many as late
as November of last year while still taking chemotherapy.
Wayne has also been involved with SERA almost since it's beginning and served as
Repeater Journal editor until he retired at the end of 2001. His contributions
to amateur radio and repeater operations has been something that has greatly
benefited the eight states that SERA serves as a frequency coordination group.

Amateur Extra License Class
The Smith Chart Amateur Radio Society, K4OO announces an Amateur
Extra License Class. The class begins Monday March 4, 2002, from 7:00
PM to 9:00 PM and meets every Monday night through May 13. The VE
test session in Smithfield is the following Saturday.
The question pool for the Extra test will be changing July 1. This
will be the last Extra class that SCARS will be conducting based on
the existing Extra question pool. If you want to upgrade, now is a
good time. In my opinion the new question pool (some 800 questions)
is not going to make the Extra exam any easier.
The fee for the class is $20.00 and includes the ARRL Extra Class
License Manual that we will be using as the text.
The class will be held at the Knightdale Fire Station #2 at the
intersection of Poole and Clifton Roads. From the I-440 Poole Road
exit, take Poole Road east approimately 4.5 miles. The station will
be on your left.
Pre-registration is required for this class. I must have your class
fee ($20.00) by Feb 25, 2002 so that the training materials can be
ordered. In the event that we don't have enough pre-registrations to
hold the class the class fee will be refunded.

The copper ground rod needs to go near the radio (not out at the
tree). As short a connection from the radio's ground to the ground rod
is what you'd like.
The coax that leaves the shack should also pass through a "bulkhead
connector" that is connected to the station RF ground as well.
Many hams will use a copper or aluminum plate will holes drilled from
SO-239 barrel connectors to make the "station ground window". The
plate is connected to the station RF ground and ALL the coax feeds
that leave the shack pass through this single point ground.
In your case with the G5RV, also make sure the antenna tuner is also
connected to your stations RF ground...
Frank, W4FAL
I've just bought a used TS-450SAT and I'm gonna start out with a G5RV
antenna strung up in some trees. I know I need a copper ground rod for
lightning protection, but where do I sink it? Next to the tree the feed
line hangs from? And is there an in-line or splitter device that
connects the feed line to the antenna and ground rod?
thanks for any input members might have

I happened to call "Radio Amateur Callbook" thinking that maybe they had old
books. They offered to research it and send me a letter this week. I think for
free. I used the "itsdocs" last year for the license up grade but they just
certified it was before a certain date. The W5YI group e-mailed me back and
found it in the 73-74 book but not in the 68 and they didn't have the books in
between.

There's an article on the QRZ.com web site about researching old
callsigns, at http://www.qrz.com/pre1987.html. The most valuable
paragraph in the article is:
--------
For a fee, a company (an FCC Contractor) will dig into the old
records
by hand. They can be found at: http://www.itsdocs.com. Also, the
W5YI-VEC will perform manual lookups for a $5 fee. Contact them at
1-800-669-9594.
--------
Digging back into my own history, when I was licensed in 1965 at WN
and then WA9NSO, the 2-landers (and 6-landers)were alredy in the WB
prefixes. For example, my log shows that on May 28, 1965, I worked
WN2QVJ, Neil, on 15 meter cw. I see he's now listed as WB2QVJ. So
your WA2 could have been MUCH older.
But the FCC was known to reissue old callsigns as a prefix block was
exhausted before moving to a new prefix block. I'm guessing here,
but I'll bet it was a stopgap measure to keep licensing going while
the bureaucracy got ready for a new prefix.
OK, so that's not helpful, but maybe interesting to the
whippersnappers.

Does anybody have callbooks dated 1970-1972. I'm trying to find when
I was first licensed (bad memory). Should be WN2SRY. I'm listed in
the 73-74 as WA2SRY and not in the 1968.
Thanks

Hi, Mark
No, we test every other month, on the even months (except December). But
the RARS VEs will do testing at the JARS hamfest on November 18.

Yea Brian, Sorry you must have missed the last RARS meeting
which was all about IRLP. It's very cool.
As far as the newsgroup, I'm going to give it some time...we just
started this group and hopefully users will slowly join the group.
Thanks for being the first though!

Not much activity on here.
I was listening to 146.775 by chance and heard
someone from Austrlia. I was wondering, how was this??
Checked out the Web sites and now I understand. Cool stuff.
Thats what I get for not paying attention for awhile.
I guess I need to start being active.
