hi everybody.
I want to share with you another mod for the dx-394 that I never see
in any other mod reference. When listening with earphone, you can hear
a hum when volume is low or at the minimum position. The solution is
simple.You just have to connect a 1000 uf or (better)a 2200 uf 25
volt under the pc board "directly" on the output pins voltage of the
rectifier bridge D27.If you place it directly on the filter capacitor
pins(c 144,2200 uf/25v),it will not works. This is due to the fact
that the distance between the bridge and the capacitor is too long.I
dit it successfully in my set.I hope this modification will be useful
to you.
About me:I am an electronics technician since early 80's and I am 43
rs old and I live in Quebec city,in the province of
Quebec,Canada. This is mainly a french province and the occasions to
speak and read in english are rare(except on internet)but I hope you
can understand what I write without difficulty.I own a DX-394 since
1996 and I love this set for it's versatility and facility to use.
But I was disappointed when I have experienced some crosstalk
problems. Also,I found that the sound is"caverneous".For the sound,an
external speaker set up the problem.I'm planning to make all the
modifications described. My comments will follow later.
My past sets were:kenwood R-5000,yaesu frg-7,realistic dx-100 and a
dx-200,eddystone ed-2 and many other.Actually I own a realistic dx-
160 and a dx-394.I have modified the dx-160for it's problem of
stability(they all have this),the"hiss"noise alway present even at
minimum volume.I have also added a notch filter in the audio to
remove the 5khz tone and many other mods. These mods works great.
I will be happy to receive yours comments, questions or tips.Hope
to write you soon.

Hello everyone,
Well, I am new to this mail group and I have to say that i have never
seen the DX-394. However, I do own a DX-300 and I have to say that I
love it. I just bought it from a friensd who has owned it for years and
he just didn't use it anymore. I got it for $20.00. In my oppinion i got
a good deal since this radio works great. Anyway, Like I said I have
never seen the DX-394 and would really appreciate it if someone could
send me a picture of one or send me a link that would show me what one
looks like. I might be interested in purchasing one of these radios if
it has the features that I want.
Now I will introduce myself to the group. I am from North Eastern
Pennsylvania and right now we are buried in about a foot of snow. I
enjoy sw monitoring and dx'ing when possible. I am 27 years old and have
been into all aspects( the ones I can understand ) of radio for about 10
years now. Hope to hear from this group often............
Jason
Hello, I'm a new member of the chat group, this my first email to the
group. I'm 54 years of age and have been listening to SW since I was about
14/15 years of age. I live in Rockhampton Queensland Australia. Rockhampton
is situated on the 'Tropic of Capricorn' this is the equivalent of the
'Tropic of Cancer' in the northern hemisphere.
I bought the DX-394 for two main reasons. 1. Price, they (Tandy) dropped
the price to Australian $249 to get rid of them (approx. equal to US$134).
so it was a really good buy. 2. The amount of mods for this set is
unbelievable!! So has anyone tried the different mods? and if so which ones
and with what results? So far I'm quite pleased with the set but, would
perhaps consider the AGC needs a little work. It seems a little slow to me.
There are a couple of ways of modifying this. has anyone tried one or both?
I would probably go for a slow/fast selection rather than a set AGC attack.
But I'm open to suggestions. Most of the other mods don't seem that
necessary??? Perhaps I should say that an outboard speaker is a must in my
opinion. This is often the case with most SWL receivers anyway.
Okay... a little background on my other receivers: Icom IC-R71A (superb)
but shocking audio. Panasonic 4800D (wonderful audio, best of any set I've
ever had). Sangean 803A (a really great little radio but a little large to
be called a true portable) I must say I'm quite impressed with the
DX-394...it's a great little set. And a very old Radio Shack DX-200. The
DX-200 was my first really decent SW radio (for those days).
73's Tony.
I was wondering what members of the group are using for receiving
antennas and feedline arrangements? Any accessory gear (switches,
preselectors, filters etc.)? Any "homebrew" designs?
As for myself, I have a tower which supports scanner, FM broadcast,
amateur radio, and SWL antennas. My primary SWL antenna is an Alpha
Delta model DX-SWL sloper, a 60-ft. resonator-loaded multiband wire
antenna that has amazing performance and construction quality. I
have even used it for transmitting with great results, too.
I have considerable static/EMD protection for my coaxial feedlines,
using I.C.E. (Industrial Communications Engineers) devices. My radio
bench is equipped with central AC surge protection and a grounding
bus bar, to which I connect my receivers via flexible copper braid.
Most of my equipment is powered from a 30-amp DC switching supply,
through an MFJ power distribution unit. This further "isolates" my
equipment from the AC mains. Even my AC outlets are dedicated on a
separate branch circuit which I had installed by an electrician last
year, to help avoid problems with vacuum cleaners and other household
devices.
I am considering adding a preselector and antenna phaser from MFJ,
does anyone in the group have experience with these products? I am
slowly getting into MW DXing, especially when the SW bands run out of
steam for me.
Thanks for reading my post!
Danny (shortwave_junkie)
As the moderator of our group I thought maybe it was time that I
introduce my self to everyone. I have owned an 394 now for about 2
years now. I bought mine right at the final end when Radshack was
closing them out. In fact I got on the web, phone, and personally
drove to all the Radshacks in my area. I finally found one store that
had a returned one without a box or manual. I drove staight there
(about 60 miles away from me) and bought it. Oh it also was missing
the antenna as well. I got it for $85.00. Since then I have added to
my collection of various radios. My first love is Scanners. I own a
MVT- 7100 scanner, a Yaesu VR-500, an AOR 800, a Uniden Sportcat 180.
Two Uniden 350A's, and a Uniden 890XLT. Besides the 394 I also have a
PRN 1000(similar to the Drake SW1) a Yaesu FRG-7, and in the mail as
I write I am getting a MFJ-8100W Regenerative Shortwave receiver.
Also I have owned others but have got rid of them thru Ebay. I have
no fancy Antenna tower. I just used about a ten to twenty foot length
of wire. It seems that the longer of wire I use the more clogged the
bands get. I am by no means a self proclaimed expert. That's one of
the reasons why I started this group so I and others could learn and
share idea's. About four months ago I got ahold of a Shortwave
Magazine from England and was susprised to find how popular the 394
is over in Europe. It was to bad that Radio Shack never really tried
very hard to promote it's Shortwave line more when the 394 was out. I
see that if you want to you can still buy a brand new one from
England. The problem is the current is different and you would have
to use a converter. If anyone has bought recently from overseas
please let us know how you are powering it. Oh well I've bored
everyone of you now so I'll sign off. I hope others will write in and
tell us something about yourselve's. Bye for now, JT

REPLY FROM "Shortwave_Junkie":
Welcome to the group, Tony! Glad to hear you are pleased with
your '394! Yes there ARE many modifications but these, with the
exception of the crosstalk and bandwidth issues, address mostly minor
improvements. Taken collectively however, the effect is to bring
the '394 up a few notches. This radio will never "soar with the
eagles" in terms of performance, but it will certainly give a very
high return for a comparatively small investment.
Firstly, I feel it is a fairly handsome radio, sensibly laid-out and
easy to operate. It will certainly stand above many receivers in its
price range, including the Drake SW-1 (but not in audio quality). I
think the most important modifications involve the AGC and the noise
blanker, other than the above-mentioned crosstalk and bandwidth
problems. Most of the mods are done with a few dollars' worth of
parts, and these are very well worth the small extra investment.
I use my '394 as my "third" receiver, and it will likely end up on my
nightstand for those late-night insomnia attacks, or to wake me up to
some USEFUL news in the mornings, instead of the usual TV junk or
those silly FM morning talk shows that are so popular here in the
states.
My other HF receivers are an Icom IC-R75 (primary) and Drake SW-2
(secondary). I also have three VHF/UHF scanner receivers including a
Uniden BC-895XLT (primary), Radio Shack PRO-2066 (trunk) and Uniden
BC-350 (secondary). I am a licensed radio amateur, so my station also
includes some transceiving equipment.
I was bitten by the radio "bug" back in the mid-1960's, and have been
continuously interested (if not continuously involved) in radio
communications ever since. I am very pleased to see interest in SW
growing (albeit very slowly) again of late. With the nature of
worldband communications under ever-increasing threat from the
Internet, government budget cutbacks, satellite services etc., I am
trying hard to promote and generate interest in the hobby in any way
I can.
I hope you enjoy your subscription to this group, the '394 is
becoming quite popular in the US. It seems odd, but every time a
receiver is discontinued from production/availability, its demand and
popularity seem to RISE! Do you tend to agree with this? There are
a lot of fine people in the e-group circles, and I hope we can all
benefit from each others' involvement.
73!
Danny
Someone in the group privately e-mailed me with regard to a question
about doing mods to their DX-394. I had some problems with my e-mail
this past weekend, and lost most of my file folders! As a result, I
no longer have the e-mail address of the person who was kind enough
to ask me their question off-site. Please, if it was YOU, try again!!
Thanks!

73's Tony.
I have recently acquired a '394 and performed the mods for
AGC, "chuff", NB, and crosstalk. There is a mod for the USB and LSB
frequency offsets, described in the bookmarks to this site.
Unfortunately, my receiver does not fit the description given. I
have NO trimmer capacitors located at the blue xtals, and evidently
this is a different production version than the one which the authors
had, when reporting the mod.
Does anyone have an alternate modification "trick" for the SSB? Both
my sidebands are 800 Hz offset from the AM frequency. They are very
well-balanced as far as their deviation---maybe only 20 Hz or so
difference between USB and LSB tones---but still it is a pain to have
to offset the fine tuning to zero-in on amateurs or when using ECSS
to tune-in a fading AM signal.
I am very pleased with the receiver otherwise, and the mods work just
fine. Not a bad little receiver as a backup to my main equipment. If
I could just get the offset fixed now....
Thanks!

You may want to try EBay. I just spent the better part of my
afternoon bidding on no less than three of these. A Real War ensued
over the lowest price DX394, until I was just outbid in the last 53
seconds by someone with a bottomless checkbook.
Oh well, I had no time to weep, because during the War, another
seller with a mint condition DX394 posted his radio for sale. It was
on the website barely 90 minutes, when I stumbled across it. The
seller (fortunately for me) was offering a "buy it now" option, which
meant I simply clicked my mouse and POOF! It was all mine, nobody is
going to outbid me now!!
I got it for around $40 lower than the one I was fighting for. If you
still have not found one, I suggest you look on EBay TODAY. There
are at least two others still on the block. There will no doubt be
more.
Where can I find the comp. placement diagrams for doing the mods to
my reciever? How well do the mods work? I am fairly new to SW
Listening and would like info on different antennas people are having
good luck with.
Hi all,
A while back I did the Purple Wire mod and changed the AM filter to a
Kiwa. I now plan to do most if not all the mods that appear on the

knob heft and a smooth feel. I'm not in a rush to complete this. Also,
I'm only fair in my soldering technique ( a little squimish over
surface mount devices). I shall keep this net posted (if anyone is
interested.) Wish me luck!!!

Hi, its me JT. I want to Thank those who are starting to post
messages on our site. It is very hard to get one of these Clubs up
and running. I started another one 3 months ago on the Yaesu Vr-500
and so far that club is floundering. If you have any ideas on how to
get the word out you have my blessing to go ahead and do so. I also
see we have a new link on our links page. Check it out. If you have a
favorite 394 site please post on the message page or the links page.
Again Thanks, JT
Hi everyone!
since there are only 4, yes FOUR, people in this mailing list, I am not sure
if anyone here has experience with it or not, but has anyone here ordered
the aftermarket filters for the DX-394?
They look useful, and it is definitely a problem that makes SWL difficult to
do, but the $20USD plus shipping, plus the possibility of making my radio
take a permanent vacation make me a bit undecided if I should go ahead with
buying them.
does anyone here have any feedback?
Steve
