1) Sant Dariya Sahib's date of birth should read 1674, not 1634.
In 1674, Dariya's Guru would likely have been, or at least would have been
contemporary with, one of those early Dharamdasi Kabir Panth Gurus. Not sure which one yet. This research is ongoing.
2) Tulsi Sahib, in a hymn of
praise, a shabd, included Dariya on his LIST of the greatest Saints in the
history of India. Says Tulsi: "Nanak, Dadu, Dariya Saheb, Mira Bai,
Soor Das, Kabir and Nabbaji have all reached the Mystic Sky and have
given out the secrets. Their souls have got across and merged there."
Based on a close examination of the internal evidence provided in
the writings of Tulsi Sahib: theology, vocabulary, style, imagery,
quoted materials including the Anurag Sagar, stance towards the Kabir
Panth and other Sant Panths, my conclusion is that the primary influence upon Tulsi Sahib of Hathras was
Dariya Sahib and the Dariya "School of Sant Mat".
My view is that the lineage goes from Kabir to one of the disciples of Kabir, eventually to Sant Dharam Das, then to Dharamdas's son Churamani Nam. After Churamani Nam was Uditmani Nam. After Uditmani Nam was Santokh Nam, etc.... My belief is that Dariya's Guru (unnamed) was connected with one of those Kabir-related successor Gurus, then this Guru began his own Mission, well underway by 1674. After Dariya's Guru was Dariya Sahib of Bihar. Dariya Sahib eventually appointed several Saints to be his spiritual successors: Fakkar Das, Basti Das, Sant Tika Das, and, Sant Guna Das. These were also contemporaries of Tulsi Sahib, who was initiated and began his own Mission in Hathras.
Mystic Poetry and Teachings of Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar, A Great Master in the Lineage of Inner Light and Sound Mysticism
"Those
who develop interest in simran are really fortunate and are making a
good use of their human birth." (Domain Singh of the Sant Dariya
Mission Website)
Below
the mystic verses of Sant Dariya is a discourse by Domain Singh of the
Sant Dariya Mission of Bihar, on the practice of Simran (Manas Jap):
repeating God's Name or Holy Names with love and devotion, a bhakti
practice of remembering God, done during available moments throughout
the day and night, as well as simran is a technique used during
meditation practice.
Before We Get to the Poetry and Spirituality, Some Sant Mat History: Background on Sant Dariya Sahib (1634--1780)
Sant Dariya was born in 1634 in the Rohtas District of Bihar, India. He
was brought up and remained at that place for most of his life. Dariya
was apparently given his name by the family Guru. Dariya's birth was
celebrated with great festivity. After the baby was one month old, a
holy man visited his place and the mother brought the baby before him.
This holy man carefully looked at the baby from head to foot, asked the
mother to take very good care of the baby and named him Dariya, to be
so recognized later. Dariya never looked upon him as a human being, and
always referred to him as the Lord or Sat Purush. Sant Dariya got
enlightenment at the age of twenty years. He was initiated into Inner
Light and Sound Meditation, Shabd Naam, by the same Satguru mentioned
above, that had been a major influence on Dariya's life.
In 1634, Dariya's Guru would have BEEN, or at least would have been
contemporary WITH, one of the early Dharamdasi Kabir Panth Gurus, the
"People of the Anurag Sagar", that is to say, a distinct branch of Sant
Mat related to Kabir that used a text called, The Anurag Sagar, along
with, The Bijak, Saakhi Granth, and other writings attributed to Guru
Kabir. Another signature teaching that early on was unique to the
Dharamdasi group was the view that Sant Dharam Das was the primary
gurmukh successor of Kabir. It is recorded that Dariya's Satguru,
mentioned above, eventually appointed Dariya Sahib to be his spiritual
successor.
Dariya became one of the great Saints of the Sant tradition of India, a
towering figure occupying some of that space in history between the
time of Kabir and that of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras. In fact, for
awhile, Dariya and Tulsi Sahib were alive at the same time. Dariya
passed on when Tulsi was around seventeen years of age. Dariya Sahib
appointed several Saints to be his spiritual successors: Fakkar Das,
Basti Das, Sant Tika Das, and, Sant Guna Das, also contemporaries with
Tulsi Sahib, who likely spent some time in Bihar. Bihar was, and
remains, home-base of the Satsang of Sant Dariya Sahib. "He [Tulsi
Sahib] has freely used words of Braj, Avadhi, Rajasthani (Marwari),
Gujrati, Punjabi and Maithili, which leads one to conclude that, like
many other Saints, he must have traveled widely in V.P., Rajasthan,
Gujrat, Punjab and Bihar." (Tulsi Sahib, Saint of Hathras, J.R. Puri,
and V.K. Sethi, RS Books)
Tulsi Sahib said he was initiated by a living Satguru, but knowledge of
the name of that particular Guru is lost, or at least not necessarily
clear to us these many years later. The name of that Guru is not
recorded in the writings that have survived. Or is it, and we simply
aren't noticing? During those days, Sant Dariya has the distinction of
being the only living or recently departed Sant Mat Master Tulsi
mentions in his writings! Furthermore, Tulsi Sahib, in a hymn of
praise, a shabd, included Dariya on his of the greatest Saints in the
history of India. Says Tulsi: "Nanak, Dadu, Dariya Saheb, Mira Bai,
Soor Das, Kabir and Nabbaji have all reached the Mystic Sky and have
given out the secrets. Their souls have got across and merged there."
My suspicion is that the unknown Guru of Tulsi Sahib was either Dariya
Sahib, or one of Dariya's successors in Bihar. Thus, contemporary Inner
Light and Sound Meditation or Sant Mat, the Path of the Masters as it
is known, associated with Sant Tulsi Sahib and Soami Ji Maharaj or Sant
Radhasoami Sahib, is directly connected to the Dharam Das branch of the
Path of Kabir by way of Dariya's Guru and Dariya Sahib of Bihar.
Masters
such as Dariya Sahib and Tulsi Sahib represented mystical hardcore
reformist voices somewhat critical of the overall direction the older
Sant Panths were headed in. Sufis, the followers of Guru Gobind Singh
(Ratnagar Rao?) or Sikhism, the Kabir Chaura or other branches of Kabir
Panth (other than the Dharamdasis), and the Dadu Panth of Rajasthan, do
not recognize Dharam Das as the gurumukh successor of Kabir, and they
do not use or recognize a key sacred text important to Tulsi Sahib
known as the Anurag Sagar. Those Panths or Paths do not seem to be the
the primary influences upon Tulsi Sahib. For the Dharamdasi Kabir Panth
group and the Dariya Sahib Panth however, the Anurag Sagar is a major
scripture, central to their teachings, history, and view of the cosmos
during this age of Kali Yuga. Therefore, these writings and teachings
unique to the Dharamdasi and Dariya branches of Sant Mat, being shared
by Tulsi Sahib are significant clues. Tulsi's views about Sant Mat
Spirituality, Kabir, Dharam Das, Panch Naam, the Anurag Sagar, a
critical stance against Kabir Panth as it had become during his day,
etc..., would most likely suggest an association with the Dariya
Satsang of Bihar. In my view, the teachings of Tulsi Sahib most
resemble those of Dariya Sahib, to the degree that it's safe to say
that, based on a close examination of the internal evidence provided in
the writings of Tulsi Sahib: theology, vocabulary, style, imagery,
quoted materials including the Anurag Sagar, stance towards the Kabir
Panth and other Sant Panths, that the primary influence upon Tulsi was
Dariya Sahib and the Dariya School of Sant Mat.
Back to Sant Dariya Sahib. "In one of his books, Dariya claimed himself
to be Saint Kabir in his previous birth." (Dr. Dharmendra Brahmachari
Shastri, who published a research paper on the Sant for his Doctor of
Philosophy thesis called Sant Dariya Kabir of Bihar) Certainly, many
believe the great sage Sant Dariya Sahib was the reincarnation of Guru
Kabir. In any case, it can be said that the teachings of Sant Dariya
Sahib and his Satguru successors do indeed represent a continued living
mystic-expression of this Path of Guru Kabir in this current Kali Yuga
Age. Says Sant Dariya Sahib: "Sat Purush is the living Lord And His own son serves as the ladder. That ladder is continued through me, says Dariya. Fakkar Das, Basti Das, and Guna Das, Are the ladders proceeding from me. Whomsoever they appoint as their successors Would also be known as ladders. Thus will my line of succession continue..... "Those souls who remain in obedience to these successors, Shall cross the Ocean of the world. How long will this line of succession continue? Kindly relate it to us in your own words, asks Fakkar Das. Listen mindfully, 0 Fakkar Das, I explain this to you, says Dariya: As long as the discipline of the Sound Current is preserved unadulterated, The line of succession will truly continue. But when it is mixed with outer rituals and display of external garbs, My Sound Current will part company. My Divine essence will depart, And the souls will go into the mouth of Kal. I shall then come to this world, And shall proclaim the teaching of the Sound Current again. Proclaiming the teaching, I shall found the line of succession. And emancipating the souls, I shall take them to my Abode. For aeons I have been coming, And imparting the teaching of the true Sound Current."
Above is based on 1) information found at the Sant Dariya Mission
website; 2) the one book in English featuring excerpts from the many
writings of Dariya Sahib, by K.N. Upadhyaya; and, 3) my own articles
reflecting about Sant Mat history, the Kabir line of Masters, Dharam
Das, Dharam Das's son and spiritual successor: Churamani Nam, Dariya's
Guru, Dariya Sahib, and Tulsi Sahib. Note: Domain Singh of the Sant
Dariya Mission website really likes Upadhyaya's book on Sant Dariya,
thinks it's a wonderful and scholarly publication. Spirituality: Mystic-Verses/Shabds of Sant Dariya Sahib
Let the practitioner be brave like a lion, and let him not forget the
holy repetition even for a moment! Let him be on alert with his
drawn-out bow and arrow! The thief (Kal) can never come near such a
one. (Sahasrani, M., p. 37)
Keep on repeating the holy names with tenacity, and remove the
impurities by repeated rubbings. With the impurities removed, one
becomes pure, and wisdom dawns upon such a one in full. Sahasrani. M.,
p. 61) Sumiru Sat Nam niju kam hai jahi te
Practice the repetition of the true Names which alone is of value,
abandon the taste for worldly enjoyment, and attain thereby the inner
bliss. Have kindness in your heart, look with compassion, give up all
family rites and worldly concern.
Being detached, brush aside all worldly delusions, And take refuge
under the Satguru's holy feet, which is the kingdom of eternal bliss.
Disregarding sufferings and afflictions, cut off worldly snares, and be
firmly absorbed in contemplation which alone is of value.
Thereby the inner lotus will blossom, nectar will flow, and the inner
sky will resound with melody hearing which, Kal will flee away.
There the dazzling Light will shine and the true Sound will resound,
which will destroy heavy sins, and place a divine canopy over your
head. (Shabd 318, M,.pp. 103-104, D.G. Vol. I. p. 86) Sumirahu satpad pran adhar
Carry on the repetition of the true names, taking it to be your very
life-breath. Obtain thereby the true Sound, and go across the ocean of
the world. When a disciple receives the holy names from the Guru, the
disciple is sure to attain the Unchangeable, Eternal and Immortal Abode.
The soul attains union with the Creator, and never again comes to this
world. That Abode is different from the three worlds. There resides the
Primeval Lord along with a multitude of pure souls.
A disciple who takes the Guru's word to his heart, is destined to go to
the True Abode, and is never to fall into hell. Having obtained the
Authentic Passport (Naam), he certainly goes to the Hidden Realm, and
never comes back here again, says Dariya. (Shabd 9I, M., p.40, D.G.
Vol. I, p. 64)
Light and Sound arise from the Primal Shabd. Let one make one's
attention one-pointed, and let the Surat catch the Sound Current with
rapt attention! This is the only way to rise to the Primal Shabd. One
should fix one's attention at that point where the sun and the moon
meet (at the eye-center).
One will find a resounding melody emanating from the Primal Shabd. One
should merge oneself into that melody. There the Thousand-petalled
Lotus blossoms, although the Primal Source is above the Akah Lotus.
There arises a unique fragrance from the Thousand-petalled Lotus,
enjoying which the souls are thrilled with great delight.
When one becomes a devotee of the Satguru, then alone love and devotion
are manifested through his service. The further journey is extremely
subtle. It can be crossed only by merging the Surat in the Sound
Current. Experiencing the refulgent Light and incomparable Sound (of
higher Regions) one is filled with bliss.
Reaching the Inaccessible (Agam) Region, one finds an exceedingly
dazzling Light. It is hard for the mind to stand that Light. Stepping
on the ladder of the Satguru, one tastes there the fruit of
Immortality. (Dariya Sagar, chaupai 165-171 & chhand 5, D.G. Vol
II, pp. 17-18) When one sees with one's inner wisdom, An eternal Light comes to one's sight. One is absorbed in the Unstruck Divine Melody, And the Lord is seen in the refulgence of Light. (Dariya Sagar, chaupai 376-377, D.G. Vol. II, p. 38)
The Unstruck Divine Music is played every moment. And seeing the Divine
Form the soul is absorbed within. Only he who finds a wise Guru, can
attain the true Abode of Sat Nam. (Dariya Sagar, chaupai 382-383, D.G. Vol II, p. 39) (Sant Dariya Sahib -- Saint of Bihar, RS Books) A
Satsang Discourse: Sumiran for God-Realization, An Article by Domain
Singh of the Sant Dariya Mission, the Sangat Founded by Sant Dariya
Sahib, a Sant Mat Community in Bihar, INDIA http://theholysound.com/sant-dariya-saheb-bihar/Sumiran-for-God-Realisation.html
There are many kinds of Sadhana [spiritual practices] to realise God.
The question is which is the simplest and most suitable for the average
person. Many have realised God by repeating the name of the Lord. The
Guru gives the Name at the time of initiation. Lord Shiva achieved
immortality by repeating the holy name of the Lord. Savage Balmiki
became Brahma-like by repeating the holy name. The power of the holy
name is beyond description. In the Ramayana, Saint Tulsi Das has said
that the holy name of the Lord is more powerful than the Lord Himself.
In the Gita, Lord Krishna has said that amongst all the Yagyas, Jap
Yagya is the greatest.
The Name of the Lord has the capacity to reveal God. As the practice
progresses, the mind becomes subtler and subtler. Ultimately the mind
ceases and merges into the Transcendental. In this method of
meditation, one sits down, closes the eyes, maintains an easy and
comfortable posture, and without moving the lips or tongue repeats the
name given by the Guru. As the process progresses, the breathing
becomes calm and even. One's mind becomes quiescent. When the mind
becomes quiescent, God speaks. If we listen to the inner voice, we find
solutions to all our problems and frustrations.
By constant repetition of the Nam [Name] one can conquer lust and
passion. To face the ups and downs which is natural in human life,
there is no remedy better than ceaseless remembrance of God [simran or
sumiran: mentally repeating God's Name: manas jap, as a way to remember
God]. Saints of the Nirguna School of Spirituality [devotees or bhaktas
of the Formless God] right from the time of Kabir have praised the
power of sumiran. Gandhi jee was a great proponent of Nam-Bhakti. Sant Dariya has described the importance of Nam- Bhakti in the following verses: "Nam pratap yug yug chali aaye, sakal sant gun mahima gaye" jyo tarani jal jat taraee, Nam sumiru jal bohit payee"
Dariya Sahib in the above verses says that the importance of Nam has
been recognized for aeons. Saints have praised its glory. A boat floats
on the water and whosoever has to cross a river rides a boat. To sail
through the ocean of life which is so difficult, one needs a boat of
sumiran to cross the ocean of life. God [at the highest level] is
Formless and very few get an opportunity to see him in a form (body [or
in the form of Satguru]: Sagun rup birla jan pave). The holy name of
the Lord which is Nirguna (beyond attributes) easily leads to the
realization of the Lord. According to Sant Dariya, akshar Nam
(alphabetical name) leads to nihakshar (Lord who is beyond kshar and
akshar). Here ksar and akshar denote perishable and non-perishable and
the Lord is beyond these dualities, whom Dariya Sahib calls nihakshar.
Nam is a great medicine to cure all kinds of ills in this samsara [this
world of changes]. Sumiran of the holy name subdues the mind and leads
to concentration. The mind at ease and peace cures many of physical and
mental diseases. It improves the immune system.
To sum up, the benefits of sumiran is immense for this life and life
beyond. Those who develop interest in sumiran are really fortunate and
are making a good use of their human birth. ////////
The
basic philosophy of this sect (panth) is to traverse the spiritual
journey to the ultimate goal by way of the Sound Current, i.e. Surat
Shabd Yoga. The Royal Master or Guru traverses this spiritual path and
guides the genuine seekers, their disciples, from earth upwards through
kingdom after kingdom, from station after station, each one more
splendid than the previous one in advancing stages until the traveler
reaches his final destination at the feet of the Supreme Lord. It is
truly a highway over which the seeker, the traveler, the disciple,
travels along with Gurus -- the Saints, through vast regions. They may
be stopping at different stations en-route.The Saint: ParamPurush
Sant Satguru, is the captain leading the soul from victory to victory
over different stations en-route as they have traversed this path
countless times and He is the Master of all, Lord of all intervening
regions through which this highway passes.
Definite
Internal Sounds are audible at each station. The seeker, by meditation,
concentration, catches this Sound Current as per the guidance of the
Sant Satguru. Param Purush Pooran Dhani Huzur Data Dayal: "When the
disciple is ready, the Guru, i.e. the true mentor appears" is an age
old saying. Param Purush Sant Satgurus are manifestations of the
Supreme Lord and incarnated from time to time for the salvation of
deserving souls. The spiritual path is long and thorny and full of
pitfalls, and 'Kal-chakra' plays its role to distract the seeker by
innumerable distractions. By the grace, guidance and benevolence of a
true Guru alone seeker can march forward and win over the distractions,
to reach the Ultimate Goal. The Living Guru who has traversed this
path, numerous times is the only Power capable of taking the soul
successfully to the Highest Abode, at the sacred feet of the Supreme
Lord. The Guru only can help the disciple merge with Him for eternal
peace, tranquility and supreme bliss, and thus liberate him from this
mortal coil.
-- Philosophy of the Radhasoami Faith,
Shabd Pratap Ashram, (Huzur Chachaji Maharaj), Gwalior, M.P., India,
While
Divali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most
significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light".
Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body
and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. Just
as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the
celebration of this inner light, in particular the knowing of which
outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all
ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the
body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent
reality. With the realization of the Atman comes universal compassion,
love, and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher
knowledge). This brings Ananda (inner joy or peace).
The gunas
are the underlying forces or tendencies which one needs to have
unaffected, direct relation with in order to find effectiveness and
righteousness in life: they are lines of potential and illuminate
thought and action, thus the inner meaning of Diwali being the festival
of lights.
Deepavali celebrates this through festive fireworks,
lights, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship. While the story behind
Dipavali varies from region to region, the essence is the same - to
rejoice in the inner light (Atman) or the underlying reality of all
things (Brahman). (Wikipedia)
Petals of Love: The Holy Name of Beloved Lord Radhasoami, and Conduct According to the Radhasoami Faith
Radhasoami Reality: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Radhasoami-Reality {Radhaswami Dayal ki Daya Radhaswami Sahai: "Grant Merciful Radhasoami Thy Grace and Protection"}
The
Concept and the Name of the Supreme Being in the Radhasoami Faith, by
Agam Prasad Mathur (Dada Ji), in the book, Petals of Love:
The Radhasoami Faith is essentially a faith of love. Great stress has
been laid by its founder leaders on the generation of love for the
Supreme Creator, the Supreme Master who is all love. Love is the prime
source of boundless energy. Love is bliss, and thus the Supreme Being
is Supreme Bliss. Love is Light and Truth and from them emanates
intelligence. Thus the Supreme Being is an infinite ocean of bliss,
intelligence, energy, truth and light. He is eternal and unchangeable
and the sole director of the whole creation. Such a Supreme Being is
omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. He is all-pervading. The entire
universe is the creation of His own current and as such He is present
at every stage in the creation. All the religions of the world believe
the Supreme Being to be omnipresent and all-pervading that is Sarva
Vyapak and Sarva Deshi but Radhasoami Faith like all other Sant sects
of the past believes the Supreme Being to be both Sarva Deshi, that is,
omnipresent and Ekdeshi, that is, confined to one region. Laying great
emphasis upon this point, the second Guru of Radhasoami Faith, Hazur
Maharaj says that without accepting Him to be Ekdeshi, it is not
possible to translate and elaborate the spirit and to cross the limits
of maya and it would be difficult to get admission to His abode which
is pure bliss, love and energy...... Radhasoami signifies both
the Supreme Being and the original spirit or sound current which
emanates from His Holy feet and which is the fundamental factor in the
whole creation. The Supreme Being who has manifested Himself as the
Creator can be compared with an ocean of bliss, love, truth, energy and
sound (shabd). A creative ocean cannot be perceived without commotion
or wave. A single wave tends to produce a cumulative effect which
results in the continuous flow of waves. The ocean can thus be called
the master creator that is Soami and the first original wave as Radha.
With the commotion or rise of the wave, a sound also reverberates. That
sound is Radhasoami. So it is equivalent to an announcement from the
Supreme Being of His own name. The Radhasoami Faith stands for
love. Love has two components -- the lover and the beloved. The Supreme
Being is all love and in Him the two components -- the lover and the
beloved are manifested in all excellence. The first wave which emanated
from the Prime Source is the lover, that is, Radha and the beloved is
Prime Source itself, that is, Soami. But as the wave is the chief
component of the ocean so Radha is identical and one with Soami.
As has already been explained, Radhasoami is the spiritual resonance
reverberating incessantly in the highest region of creation where no
mind and matter exist. The original resonance or adi-shabd (first
sound) is Soami. Radha is the creative force which emanated from
adi-shabd. Radha, being the first creative force, having its source in
adi-shabd, and completely identical with it, is known as adi-surat.
Radhasoami together signifies the store house of Shabd which is sound
and energy both. Prem Bani (Hymn) from Huzur Maharaj: Have firm faith in, and reliance on RADHASWAMI. Radhasoami will accomplish all your tasks. The Supreme Father Radhasoami Dayal [Merciful Lord of the Soul] loves you dearly. He will redeem you in a moment. Believe what I say is true. Know that Radhasoami is your True Beloved. His heart is overflowing with compassion for souls. He imparts them his own strength and redeems them. Have no anxiety or worry in your mind now. Utter 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' 'RADHASOAMI' ........ every moment. Always utter 'RADHASOAMI', the Name of the Merciful Supreme Being. Then only will mind and Kal become powerless against you. Radhasoami is my most Beloved Lord. Conduct, By Agam Prasad Mathur, in the Book, Petals of Love: A true satsangi should in all faith and sincerity adhere to the following edicts: 1. Radhasoami faith is the true religion and Radhasoami is the name of the true Supreme Being.
2. The Sant-satguru of the time is the Supreme Being incarnate. With
all love and humility, the devotee should serve him with body, mind and
soul. His satsang should be attended with full faith and attention.
3. The true name revealed by the Satguru is Radhasoami. It is
Dhunyatmak naam or the supreme resonance of the highest division of
creation; all others who have manifested themselves at lower spheres
are subordinate to it. Radhasoami as such is the all-pervading
spiritual resonance that harmonizes the sounds of different lower
regions; hence Radhasoami is the sat-shabd or true holy name.
4. By implanting this true name within one's own self with all love and
faith, the sumiran, dhyan and bhajan should be practiced
[sumiran/simran: repeating God's Name (Radhasoami), dhyan: visualising
the form of one's Sant-satguru/teacher and seeing inner Light; bhajan:
meditating upon the inner Sound]. Bhajan or surat-shabd-yoga should be
practiced in a secluded place regularly and with all reliance in the
grace and mercy of Radhasoami Dayal [the Compassionate Lord of the
Soul] and Satguru; whatever is observed and heard should be kept secret
and should not be divulged to others under any circumstances.
5. A true satsangi should surrender himself entirely to the mauj [will]
of the Satguru. Whatever comes to pass in his life, he should not
complain; rather he should take it to be for his good. 6.
Animal diet and intoxicants should be totally avoided. Use of rich food
and over-eating should also be avoided. The period of sleep should be
gradually reduced to six hours a day. 7. Attachment to the
worldly people and the material objects should be reduced to the
minimum. Worldly thoughts should not be allowed to overpower the mind.
The mind and senses should be kept under control. Public and private
duties should be performed with mental equanimity. 8. Feeling
of pride and vanity in matters of caste, wealth, position and personal
qualifications should not be allowed to grow. Love and humility are
true virtues or real personal ornaments which should be adopted.
9. Jealousy, antagonism and anger should not be entertained. Time
should not be wasted in useless pursuits and gossip. A habit of
forgiveness and tolerance should be inculcated. 10. Feeling of
love, affection and brotherhood for fellow satsangis should be
cultivated. A true desire to fulfill the ideals of bhakti [love and
devotion] should be nurtured. 11. Attention should in no case
be diverted to activities, customs and functions detrimental to true
spiritual pursuits. Fear of worldly gain should not distract the mind
from fulfilling the requirements of the faith. 12. Benevolence and charity should be adhered to and a certain portion of the earnings should be spent in parmarthi activities.
13. One should deal with others in the same manner as one would wish
others to behave with him. If one is not in a position to do good to
others, he should under no circumstances cause any harm to them.
Nothing should be done with the motive of gaining name and fame in the
world. 14. The spiritual realization, inner secrets of the
practice of surat-shabd-yoga [meditation upon the inner Sound of God
(Radhasoami)], and inner revelations of His grace and mercy should at
no cost be disclosed by a devotee to anybody except the Satguru.
15. Truth should be the guideline in the performance of all activities,
spiritual or temporal, for a satsangi. Nothing that falls short of
truth should be acceptable to him.
It
must not be forgotten that the human body is transient and fleeting. It
is ours only for a very limited period of time. This body is similar to
a hollow bubble that will burst after a short length of time. This
body, for which we do so much, is as brittle as glass and may at any
moment be shattered to pieces. Once you have seen this light in
everything around you, our soul only finds contentment and inner peace
seeking the Lord's spiritual union. Throughout our life here on earth,
we often experience feelings of loneliness and pain. According to the
mystics, God has placed these feelings in our hearts in order to pull
us back to Him. If we had not felt this longing, we would not have
turned from outside involvement in worldly activities to inside
involvement in religious pursuits. The feeling of separation will
persist as long as the soul does not return to its original home and
meet the Lord.
It
is now evident the necessity to seek God realization but realize it is
within our own human body. First, unless we have firm faith that God
resides within, we cannot begin the search to find Him. A man must have
some kind of faith before he undertakes any journey. For example, if a
jar of gold coins is said to be hidden underground, then one must first
have faith that the jar is actually there. Only then can one begin the
labor required to reach this glorious prize. Likewise, a disciple
starts his journey on the basis of faith alone, and this faith is
proven through the progress the devotee makes. One question is if this
is possible to do so and how. We need to seek out a Perfect Master that
has actually been through the process and has achieved God realization.
It is evident that a Perfect Master comes into this world to show us
the path which leads us back to our true Home. Masters do not come into
this world by means of their own will; they are always appointed by the
Lord.

Am very satisfied that this month's Blog Talk Radio podcast turned out
really well, communicating some important principles from the Masters
about living a spiritual life, successful meditation practice, and
union with God.
Guru Kabir says, "The imaginations of the mind are just as innumerable
as the innumerable waves of an ocean. If somehow this mind can become
quiet by itself, attainment of the true Knowledge-like Diamond will
become easily possible (everyone in this world is sad or restless
because of lack of Knowledge. This true Knowledge can be attained only
when the mind becomes quiet)." One of the effects of adhering to the
ahimsa ethics of the Masters is a reduction in tension, in agitation of
mind.
The program begins with sixty seconds from an old recording of a Bhajan
(chant) of Baba Somanath (disciple of Huzur Baba Sawan Singh), which is
quite haunting and otherworldly. Then there is a reading from an

[NOTE:
It is said that the time between Midnight and 3 AM is extremely
critical...... The Saints keep wide awake during these hours and they
also keep their ardent disciples engaged in positively spiritual
pursuits like satsang, service (siva), recitation of the Great Name,
contemplation and meditation. Thus Soamiji Maharaj and other True Adepts of
the Radhasoami Faith keep their devotees occupied and engaged.]
Says Soami Ji (Sant Radhaswami Sahib):
The result of keeping awake in the company of the guru during the night
is extremely rich and useful. If the surat, fully roused, stirring her
stumps, concentrates at the Third Eye, the exercise will be immensely
beneficial. (What happens now is that long before the surat ascends to
the Third Eye, the mind becomes somnolent and drowsy and becomes fast
asleep, unconscious and forgetful.) It is only after long spell of
attendance at satsang and practice of meditation, contemplation and
recitation of the Great Name that the surat acquires the ability to get
into the Third Eye with full consciousness and awareness so that she
can catch the glimpses of the inner form of the Satguru and may touch
His feet and render real service to him and hear his discourses which
will make her bloom ad blossom like a rosebud.
Unless
and until the structure made out by the manas or mind becomes
topsy-turvy it will not release the surat [attention-faculty of the
soul] who is keen to ascend to the Third Eye. As at present, the surat
is chained in the dungeon of mind and maya [illusion], bound as it were
in a tomb. All the forces operating in the mind are flowing outside and
downward.
This
vital energy of the surat has become absorbed in maya, i.e. swallowed
up. Unless the whole citadel becomes topsy-turvy, the surat will not
run inward and upward [during meditation]. Till then the surat will not
come into her own and will not be cheerful and delighted. Once the
surat becomes inward, she will become ecstatic and every fibre and pore
of its being will be exhilarated in the temple that has been built
inside ["within" the human body], and then rosebuds will bloom and
blossom within........
Here,
in the world, the mind enjoys sensory pleasure from every object and
becomes so wrapped up in it that it refuses to move forward. For
spiritual progress, therefore, the surat has to be put in the company
of birat and nirat which will detach her from the objects of pleasure
(birat) and will goad her forward (nirat) to greater pleasures. The
birat and nirat will become active only by the contemplation on the
form of the guru [dhyan]. That is why it is said that spiritual
movement and progress without the guru is just not possible, for the
contemplation on the beauteous form of the guru will not allow it to
get absorbed in the pleasure of any spiritual sphere, till she reaches
the final goal. The sphere where the surat, birat and nirat become
rolled into one --- there alone the surat will become fully absorbed.
Before that, through the medium of the contemplation on the form of the
Satguru, nirat will ever be roused and both mind and matter will have
to accept defeat and will not be able to hinder the march of the surat.
But the necessary condition is than the seeker much have ardent love
for the form of the Satguru.
The
Drop (surat) merges into the Ocean (the Supreme Lord) and then gets to
know His sweep and extent, and she being the darling of the Lord, rises
into the Timeless and Spaceless spheres.
That
supreme sphere is the Satt Desh which is soft and tender, without any
contradiction or friction or opposition, entirely free from any
confrontation or conflict or heat, while in the region of Kaal,
opposition is built in, and in every action which the jiva [soul]
performs there is reaction. As it is, the domain of Kaal [realm of mind, duality
and time] is not soft and smooth. But in Satt Desh which is completely
pure there is primordial energy and nothing else, and it is so radiant,
so refulgent and bright and lustrous, that it seems as if suns are
galore as lotuses: so to say, that land is soft and smoother and is the
plane of sun. That is the Sphere, admittance into which will release
the seeker from all the burden and load of sins which inevitably
multiply in this realm of Mind and matter. So to say, by attaining to
that sphere, the jiva-surat will get out of the burden and load of sins
and transgressions, lapses and errors.
The
jiva-surat which is situated on this earth and shares its burden,
ascends to the bluish zone of the Third Eye, and mounts and gets across
the mount of Neptune (the top of that bluish zone and then proceeds
higher to the Inaccessible Spheres where the guru sits majestically).
Those Spheres of the guru as well as the Great Name revealed by the
guru are Unapproachable and Inaccessible, and as it is, who can speak
of them?
The
surat then ascends towards the Spaceless and Time-less Spheres through
the medium of the merudand (coseygis or al ajab [core of the spirit,
whose central seat is the sixth ganglion]) and breaks into the Und (the
lower fringes of Brahmand: Shiva lok, Brahma lok and Vishnu lok) and
perceived what is beyond it. Of course. I was a fool, a stupid fellow
devoid of all understanding of the core of Reality; but for the grace
and compassion of Radhasoami, I would have never got to know anything
about it.
I like that relative who prevents me from going into evil ways, and guides me into the righteous path; He is wise who remains on the righteous path; he makes others search, and never forgets himself; He is a false guru if he does not show the real path to his disciple. If the disciple gets the grace of Satguru then he will worship God. A small amount of success is enough to misguide a man; Seeing his wealth and family he becomes a victim of pride.
Sakhi: The soul departed and the lamp of life went out; the body became ruined; Those who died are already dead; let the living save them selves. Commentary by Dr. Jaggessar Das: In
this ramaini Guru Kabir talks about living on the righteous path. This
path is shown to a disciple by a true guru. But there are false gurus,
who do not truly guide their disciples on a spiritual path. If the
disciple is fortunate to have the grace of a true guru, then he will be
shown the way to worship God. True worship of God resides in the heart
and it is not an external form, as many people in the world practice. A
true guru will, himself, remain on the path, and will encourage others
to follow in the same path, so he may also gain freedom from the
bondage of the world. Just
as when a person develops pride by obtaining some material wealth, just
so a person can develop pride by having a small amount of spiritual
wealth. Such a person cannot obtain liberation from this world. There
are many false teachers in the world who pride themselves with their
learning. But their learning is shallow when it comes to the knowledge
of God. They are full of words but not of realization. Such a teacher
cannot guide a disciple into a righteous path and help him to obtain
liberation. Guru
Kabir emphasizes the point that we should not be concerned about those
who have already died. They are gone and cannot be of any help to us
who are living. Each one of us has to travel on the path of
righteousness and try to obtain liberation for ourselves. We should try
to find such a spiritual teacher who has the light of spiritual wisdom
shining in him. We should be able to take spiritual light from him and
become enlightened ourselves. ////////

a Spiritual Life -- Ahimsa Teachings from the Saakhi Granth of Guru
Kabir, Part One: "Never speak harsh words! Understand the importance of
sweet words and bring them into use. Look at the sacred water of the

by using sweet words, make friends with persons possessing the toughest
of hearts." (1008 Kabir Vani, Compiled by Lalchand Doohan Jigyasu,

Mystic-Poetry of the Sants of India: Tukarama and Kabir: Always, always meditate day and night
Tukarama: Invoke God With Love, and Utter His Name Time After Time
When I utter Thy name, my mind becomes composed. The tongue enjoys a stream of ambrosia. Good omens of all kinds take place. The mind is colored in Thy vision, and becomes steady on Thy feet. One becomes satisfied......... Desires come to an end........ Happiness meets happiness, and there is no limit to blessedness.
The whole body feels cool when one meditates on the Name. The senses forget their movements. . . . . . By the sweet nectar-like love of God, one is full of energy and all kinds of sorrow depart it immediately.
The body which was hitherto unclean, becomes lustrous by the power of the Name, the mind is purified, and repentance puts a stop to one's accumulated Karma.
The evil passions are conquered; all the impulses are nipped in the bud by the power of the Name.
One should sit at a place, concentrate his mind, invoke God with love, and utter His name time after time. I swear by God's name, says Tuka, that there is no other way of reaching God: indeed, this is the easiest of all ways.

Kabir: Your Heavy Load is Taken Off --
Meditation Will Remove All Your Burdens
Meditation leads to salvation's door: Go to heaven -- why go back to the world? In the house of the fearless One, where music, unstruck, sounds, you shall play trumpets.
Meditate upon Him in your heart. Without meditation there is no salvation. (Rest)
Unfettered meditation brings salvation: Your heavy load is taken off. Welcome Him in your heart, so you will not be born again and again.
Blissful meditation will light a lamp inside you that does not need any oil. This lamp will make you immortal; this lamp will draw out the poison of lust and anger.
Pierce this meditation that gives you salvation, and wear it around your neck. Never take it off. Meditate always: Your guru's grace will get you across.
Meditation will free you from dependence on others: You will sleep on silken sheets at home. Your heart will be at peace; your life will blossom: Deeply drink this meditation.
This meditation will erase your blemishes; you will be free from Maya's touch. Meditate, meditate, and sing, "Hari, Hari" [God, God]. You will obtain this meditation from your true guru [Satguru].
Always, always meditate day and night: When you rise, when you lie down, when you breathe in, when you breathe out. Waking or sleeping, relish the taste of meditation -- meditation will bring union.
Meditation will remove all your burdens; meditation upon Ram's name will become your support. Kabir, says, "He is limitless." (Songs of Kabir from the Adi Granth, Nirmal Das, SUNY Press, NY)
With Cries from the Heart, the Search for a True Guru Begins
By Lars Jensen
Sant Mat Fellowship: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SantMatFellowship {"Repeat
the Name of your Beloved, day and night, again and again. With care in
thought, word and deed, you will cross to the other shore." -- Sant Dadu Dayal}
[Mr.
Lars Jensen is a project manager (civil eng.) in Stockholm (Sweden). He
tells, "I was born in a country where no one understands spirituality.
Hardly any people believes in God in Sweden. Even if this country is a
desert of spirituality, I had an inner longing to finding the truth,
since the early childhood. I wondered about the mystery of life and
death.... " Mr. Jensen received initiation in Santmat in July, 2008.
He has tried to share his experiences and understanding on True Guru
with us. -- SadGuruMehi.com] A
million speak of love, yet how few know; true love is not to lose
remembrance even for an instant. It can only be called love, if you
yearn for the Lord in the same way as a man is yearning for air, when
he is drowning and fighting for his life under the water. You can only
be said to have a thirsty heart if you can drink the whole ocean and
your lips will remain dry like a desert. Only such blessed soul will
reach the highest goal of life.
When
the soul begins to awake from its deep slumber, no worldly forces can
undo with the tears and yearning of the heart. At that blessed moment
the life takes a turning point and the search for the Lord starts. It
is the Lord from within our own heart calling us back home. From that
very moment the destination of the soul is fixed. The cry of the heart
will not stop until the goal of the heart is reached and the union with
the Lord is accomplished.
While
explaining the meaning of a poem "Builders" in the examination hall
this inner force stroke the heart of the young boy Ramanugrah Lal
(later known as Sadguru Maharshi Mehi) and his viewpoint of life
suddenly changed within a twinkling of an eye, as if he was hit by a
lightening of intensive yearning. He left the examination hall
immediately and never returned. From that moment he was ever restless
wondering in search for a true Guru that could give him the inner
contact with the Lord. Finally the search was completed when he met
Baba Devi Sahab and through Baba Devi's influence and spiritual
guidance it is told that he ultimately achieved Salvation.
So
spirituality is like an infection that can be caught but not taught.
Once a God-realized soul is met; spirituality is caught like an
infection going from one heart to another heart. The goal of
spirituality is to establish this connection with the Source at level
of soul and have nothing to do with any lower level of mind, intellect
or emotions. Spirituality is only to be found at the level of soul. So
how can it be found if search is made at another level where it is not?
So a connection at level of soul is essential in spirituality. This
connection is only possible to establish by the help of one who already
has this inner connection with the Source. Only when such a
God-realized Soul is met, we can be colored in the color of
spirituality. To find a true Guru is therefore a must.
God
as ordinate this way and so it is confirmed in all our Holy Scriptures.
This is the true Religion, which is the same for all human beings and
that never has changed and never will change, as it is old as mankind
and created by the Lord Himself. Even all our Competent Masters of the
past went to a master since the Lord has ordinate this way. Jesus the
Christ went to John the Baptist and Kabir went to Ramananda. They
themselves were more developed than their own masters, but they went to
a master as an example for us to follow. If such high personalities had
to go to a master, why do we think that we could find the way back to
God by ourselves? God is the unseen Power over all working. So God
needs a human pole through whom He can speak, how else He can speak
with us?
So
to get this inner connection with the Lord a spiritual Guru or Master
is necessary. But who is the Master? This subject is very
misunderstood. Guru Nanak says: "God is the true Master and the soul is
the true disciple". The
Master is always one. Because God is one, He is not two. It doesn't
matter if He comes in different human forms like Jesus, Guru Nanak,
Kabir and so on. The Master remains the same. It is the God Power in
them who is the Master, not the body, and this God Power is always one
and the same. So Jesus and Christ were two. Jesus was the human pole in
which the Christ power, Master Power or God Power manifested itself.
Everything is revealed in our Holy Scriptures, but we do not understand
them properly. Christ said: "I was before Abraham." (John 8:58) But it
is obvious that Jesus, the human body, was not living before Abraham.
Christ said: "I am with you always, even unto the end of the world."
(Matt 28:20) But Jesus, the human body, died at the cross. So who spoke
these words? Of course these words were not the words of Jesus, the
human body, but the words of the Christ Power or God Power. So it is
the God Power in them who is the Master and not the body. And that God
Power is not limit to manifest Itself only one time in the history or
in only one body. So that Power has manifest itself in all God-realized
soul of the world. So there may be many different lamps, but the light
from them remains the same. If a friend of you comes in different
dresses, would you not recognize him?
So
a God-realized soul never says he is the Master for it is the God Power
who works through him who is the Master. He says he is a servant of
this God Power. If he claims himself as a Master, he can never be a
Master. Never so far a true God-realised soul has claims himself as a
Master. The one, who really has seen that God Power controlling and
working through the whole creation, can never claim himself as the doer
or as the master, its impossible. And so it is confirmed in our Holy
Scriptures. Jesus the Christ never said that he was the doer, but the
Father in Heaven. Guru Nanak and Kabir stressed the same thing and Guru
Gobind Singh even told: "Whosoever calls me God will fall into the pits
of hell; I am but His lowly servant." Prophet Mohammed also claimed
that God is the only doer: "There is no God except God", "I myself am
only a servant and a prophet witnessing of Him." So no true Master ever
proclaimed himself as a Master.
So
God Power is the only one who is Competent to help us. He is the one
who can drag your attention up. He can take you above the body
consciousness, the five senses, the intellect and the mind, into the
beyond. So God have sent you to this world, but He has also sent
someone to take you back home, through whom He is saying: "Come
children, come back Home." And that is through Sants.
So
the way back to God starts with the yearning of the heart. That Power
from within will surely draw the true seeker to the right place where
the true Guru is to be found. When the candle is lighted, the moths
would themselves fly to it. Where there is honey, all true bees will
come up, but for those who can't smell the difference how can they
come?
If
someone can't smell the difference, what to do? If the yearning is not
strong enough, so that God Himself drags you to the right place where
the true Guru is to be found. What to do? If you try to search for the
true Guru by your own effort, how to find him? By own effort it is
impossible, to find him. But some guidance is helpful.
So how to find a true Guru?
It
is told that the true Guru can not to be found in a million, maybe in a
billion. Just think, how many other Competent Masters was contemporary
with our Competent Masters of the past? As for example, how many other
Competent Masters came at the time of Christ? He was the only one.
There were of course many other so-called teachers, but who were they?
They were the priests and scribes whom wanted to crucify Christ and
they claimed themselves as the only true mouthpiece of God. So the God
Commissioned person is very rare to find and mostly he comes alone. If
there are more than one at the same time, they will work as one unit,
since it is the same Power working. So he is the rare one, the rare
personality, that is Commissioned from God, but he would never say "he
is the Master" and he doesn't act or pretend to be like one either.
Everything is not the same. A so-called guru is not the same thing as
true Guru.
Accordingly
the true Guru is very hard to find. So when we search for true Guru we
must be aware, because obviously there are also 100 000 so-called
masters, who are not commissioned by God and who are not doing His
Work. But who are they? Man has the power to discriminate, because if
he does not discriminate then he looses his life. All Competent Masters
have defined very clearly that we should discriminate. What is true and
what is false? All misguidance is due to our own ignorance. But the
Holy Scriptures tells us that ignorance is no excuse, the followers
should at least know what they are following. So some guidance is
needed to avoid that the so-called gurus catch the seeker, because then
the golden opportunity of this human life is lost.
So how to recognize if a guru is the true Guru?
This
is a very rare subject and very seldom talked about, but without this
knowledge many souls will come under the influences of a so-called
guru. No blind faith is accepted by the Lord, if you have not seen for
yourself, never believe in the guru. Disciples are not needed, but
conscious co-workers of the divine plan. By being around a true
God-realized soul your own consciousness will be developed and the
inner experiences will come, if you follow his instructions with wholly
and solely devotion. But if you remain ignorant being around a guru,
the guru himself is ignorant, because spirituality is like an infection
going from one heart to another heart and no power can undo with it. So
being at the company of a true Guru you must get this injection of
spirituality. How can you come in contact with sandalwood without
getting the smell? If you don't get the smell it is because it is not
real sandalwood. So if no positive change is made at level of soul and
consciousness, this guru is probably not a true guru.
If
there was no difference between a guru and an ordinary man, then what
is the purpose of going to a guru? The true Guru is a God-realized
soul, having an inner and direct contact with the Divine Source. Having
an inner contact with the Divine Source will naturally also reflect
outside on his true living and pure character. So accordingly there are
some criteria that a guru must fulfill in order to be a true Guru. A
true Guru must have pure character since he has raised above all the
poisons of the senses, ego and mind. Whereas the so-called guru has a
worldly character even so he tries to hide it. Any sign of anger, ego,
lust, greed or worldly attachment is a sign that he is not the true
one.
Since
a man's inner state is reflected outside, a person can be known by his
living. The true Guru, whose heart is pure, can be recognized through
his pure living. The so-called guru, whose hearts is not pure, can be
recognized through his impure living. The so-called guru act and pose a
lot, so his impure living will properly not be seen if you don't come
close to him and see him acting in his daily life.
There
are 100 000 ways to be misled in the world, but there is only one way
back to God. So everything that takes away your attention from your
goal, that is God, is a hindrance. So in the direction in which a guru
draws your attention, you can see if he is genuine. If he is the true
one, then he will draw your attention to God since this is the goal. If
he draws your attention to other so-called things like fulfilling our
wishes, getting health, getting peace of mind, healing power, miracles
power, himself as a person, prophesies and so on, he can never be the
right one. All these so-called things are nonsense, because what does
it have to do with God, and by following it you will never know God.
Where you have your attention, there you also have to go. The true
guru's only goal is to take us back to God and he is living and doing
for this purpose alone.
Since
it is the Mission of God, it must be done in Gods name alone, and in no
other name. Never a true Guru claims himself as the doer or as the
Master and never he takes money for his service done in the name of
God. It is a universal law of God that everything that comes from God
is free.
The
teaching of the true Guru is in accordance with all our Holy Scriptures
and also in accordance with all Saints of the past. Whereas the
teaching of the most so-called gurus are contrary to the Holy
Scriptures and to each other. While still other so-called gurus repeat
the teaching of the true Guru, since with some training anyone can
teach it. But to give the practical demonstration, the first hand
experience, is very difficult.
The
true Guru must be able to give you a first hand demonstration of rising
you above the body consciousness, so you can have the inner experiences
of the beyond. The right inner experience that is in accordance to all
our Holy Scriptures. Until you do not see with your own eyes, do not
believe your guru. He must also be able to answer your questions,
without you even putting them. The true Guru will know your heart even
better than yourself. Only when such a Soul is met, we can be colored
in the same color. Life comes from Life as Light comes from Light. It
is only an awakened Soul that can rouse us from our deep slumber.
This
is some of the signs of a God-realized soul. This teaching is very
precious for those souls, who are lost in the search of a true Guru.
So
spirituality starts within your own heart. It is like a wildfire that
has caught into flames in the heart -- like the fire in the forest,
nobody on earth can extinguish it, it will go on and on. This wildfire
burns all the desires of the world and makes everything of this world
appear dry and empty. The only thing that remains in the heart is the
thirst for the water of life and the yearning for the Lord. This
yearning for the Lord should be our rolling passion of life, and it
should be just as strong as the hungry yearns for food and the thirsty
yearn for water. Even God Himself looks for such a soul. Where there is
fire, oxygen will come to help. Where there is a burning heart who
yearns for the Lord, help will also come. So you only need develop such
a condition, and you do not need to look for God, because God Himself
will come after you. The blind one can not find the hand of the seeing
one. Only the seeing one can take the hand of the blind one and lead
him to the right place. So He selects us. The God Power from within
will draw such a soul to the feet of a Competent Guru, just as happened
to the young boy Ramanugrah Lal (Maharshi Mehi).
Pray
to God that He may come to you, because this world is a jungle of
so-called masters. It is almost impossible to find the true Guru by our
own effort. After all you can not find Him, if He doesn't want to be
found. Only He can find you. Only the seeing one can find the blind
one, never it can be the opposite. So make a prayer to God that He will
come to you!
But
if you have a thirsty heart which holds you awake all night, then the
God Power from within your own self will draw you to the right place
where the true Guru is to be found. So all that is needed is a thirsty
heart, because even God Himself looks for such a Soul.
So
Spirituality is very simple indeed. You only take away your attention
from the world and instead direct it to God. Spirituality is just as
simple as that. ////////
Charts of the Heavens That Are Within You - Spiritual Awakening Radio. Click To Listen to Archived Show Online.
The newly archived program is about exploring Inner Space, the Kingdom
Within, making use of charts of Gnostic and Sant Mat schools of
mysticism.
Over the centuries contemplative souls have
taught that the human body is a kind of temple, and that within this
temple are portals that lead to other dimensions, that by looking
within this microcosm we may access the macrocosm of the heavens. The
Sufi mystic and philosopher Ibn Arabi wrote in his Bezels of Wisdom:
"He [Allah] brought the Cosmos into being as constituting an Unseen
Realm and a Sensory Realm, so that we might perceive the Inner though
our unseen and the Outer through our sensory aspect." We are children
of both worlds. We human beings are a Tree of Life with roots in the
earth and branches rising into a mystic sky. "The planes of heaven are
about us everywhere. One has only to know this simple truth
consciously, and then we will be free." (George Arnsby Jones, disciple
of Kirpal Singh)
For many centuries Hinduism, Shamanism,
Buddhism, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Christian Mysticism, Sufism, Santmat,
and other schools of spirituality have described a multi-dimensional
universe. Some even have their own symbols, diagrams or charts of the
heavens. No doubt the Kabbalist Tree of Life is the most well-known of
these.

My
Beloved has left me in an alien region. I have been separated from Him.
Alas! Wretched sleep is not coming to me, nor, O friend, am I blessed
with the advent of the dawn. Weeping all night, tears have been flowing
from my eyes, and I have been sighing and bemoaning. (1) Waves of
yearning keep on biting me like a cobra and, without the Beloved my
restlessness is intense. Like one struck by lightning, I smart in pain
and agony and my heart palpitates. (2) A great fire rages in my heart,
although it does not give out any smoke. I lie alone on my bed as
though my separation had been preordained. (3) From whom shall I try to
know of my Beloved's whereabouts and where to shall I write letters
enquiring of him? I shall smear my body with ashes, and put on the garb
of a Yogin (female ascetic). (4) On having found the Sat Guru, I shall
adopt His Saran (refuge, protection), and I shall follow the path to my
Beloved's abode. My heart's desire, says Tulsi, is that my Surat [soul]
may meet the Beloved. (5)
O Friend ! My Guru has
shown me the inaccessible and original abode. He has enabled me to
understand the true faith, and perceive Surat and Anhad Shabd. I have
had Darshan [vision] of the Beloved and have recognized His abode. All
this could not be achieved without the mercy and help of the Sant. (1)
Shabd [Divine Sound] resounds in the region of Sunn [void]. Catch hold
of it, recognize the easy path, and train yourself to this end. (2)
Recognize the goal which knows no form and delineation, and yet each
pore of that Being has the refulgence of a crore of suns. (3) Says
Tulsi that he is the dust of the holy feet of the Sat Guru. By His
mercy and grace, he has been able to see the highest and the eternal
abode. (4)
The ocean of existence is unfathomably
vast and without any port of safety. It cannot be crossed --- If you
meet Sat Guru, the boatman, then only will you get across and reach
your abode. The world is a net which Maya [illusion] has cast for the
Jiva [soul]. Says Tulsi that, under the sway of greed and attachment,
the Jiva [soul] wanders in the transmigratory cycle.
Concentrating your Surat repeatedly, remain withdrawn towards the
region of the eyes [eye center, third eye]. Cleansing the mirror, as it
were, of the body and mind, let your Surat [soul] proceed on. If you
get the opportunity of looking beyond, you will find the truth. Says
Tulsi, if you become the dust of the holy feet of the Sant, you will
see refulgence.
Whosoever took proper care of his
Surat [soul], did not have any fear of Kal [lord of time]. His Surat
ascended, and on rushing to Gagan [inner mystic sky] reached her Lord.
She met her Beloved on repairing to the abode at Agam Pur [inaccessible
region]. Says Tulsi, the illusions, delusions and misery of innumerable
lives were thus obliterated.
Listen, O friend !
Great is the status of Sants. It is beyond the reach of yoga and such
other methods or practices. (1) In that region of Sants there is
neither sound nor any form. It is beyond Sunn [void] and Maha-sunn
[great void]. (2) The gunas [attributes] and nirguna [formlessness]
have no access there. Sat Nam is the Beloved's region, which the Jiva
should attain. (3) Says Tulsi, he knows the True Name of the Abode of
the August, NAMELESS and Infinite Being. (4)

Love
is the Quintessence of this world and the creation. This is the
greatest requirement of every living being, and one without it is
lifeless. These are some verses from the Saakhis of Guru Kabir, in the
book, 1008 Kabir Vani, compliled by Lalchand Doohan Jigyasu, translated
by Kunwar Anil Kumar, Manoj Publications, Delhi.
The
feeling of love which fluctuates every moment can in no case be
considered true love. Love is something which never decreases and which
keeps one engrossed in itself all the time, and then only it can be
called true love. Everyone saw the lover (of God) getting in love, but
where is that love now? This love is nothing but emotion. One, who, in
the name of love, starts weeping one moment and laughing the other,
cannot be a true lover (of God). This is only an illusion.
A
heart, in which there is no love, should be considered a cremation
ground, because such a heart seems dead and gives an impression of
being devoid of feelings. It is the same as the bellows of a
blacksmith, which is made of the leather of an animal which breathes in
and out despite being inanimate (the blacksmith stokes up the fire by
pumping air out of it).
Love
is never governed by any rule, there is no abstinence and there is no
binding. One who is in love (with God), does not think of gains and
losses, and 'mine and thine' is not their concern. Love, under all
circumstances, is free from such things. Once someone is deep in love,
he forgets everything and in such state of affairs who will care for
what day or date it is.
Love
is like a deep sea. Only that lover (of God) who will dive into it
fearlessly shall be able to get the pearl of ultimate happiness in it.
And one who will not be able to muster up enough courage to dive into
it, shall remain sitting at the beach. He will remain without love in
this world. How will he get the pearls of ultimate happiness then?
The
outwardly appearance has absolutely no meaning if there is no love in
one's heart. It is useless even talking about it. Unless the love is
truly in practice, wearing an outwardly appearance is meaningless and
is a sure sign of ruin.
Only
those who have true love in their hearts attain true knowledge. Without
love, one may cling to any number of rues, he will not be able to
attain self-realization. And so, one should have true love for his
Satguru, and this is the only way one can attain true knowledge and
enjoy eternal peace.
Love
is everything, and without it everything is meaningless. And so, do not
fear offering your head while stepping on the path of love. Do not have
attachment to yourself and to the world even in your dream. Such lover
(of God), who is loved by his Satguru, becomes free from the
life-and-death cycle.
Radhasoami has so fashioned me that I now fly like a bird. -- Swami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan Poetry, Book Two
All souls belong to the lineage of Sat Naam, but this quality
(remembrance of the lineage) cannot be attained without devotion to the
Satguru. -- Soami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan Prose, Book Two
Nothing worthwhile would be accomplished by merely reciting the saints'
discourses and by memorising them, so long as one does not take to
practice. For this reason (it is stressed that) whatever discourse you
hear, go deep into it and practise it and live it, or else hearing it
and comprehending it is of no avail. (Saying of Swami Ji Maharaj - Sant
Radhaswami Sahib, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose, Book Two, Agra, India)
The source of all energy is spirit (surat-soul) which enlivens both
body and mind. Yet without the body, the spirit can have no abode, and
unaided by mind, the body cannot find a direction in which to move. The
spirit, therefore, becomes indebted to both Kaal [god of time] and Maya
[illusion] for making it conscious and making it possible for it to
exhaust and remove the covers, so that it becomes fit to ascend.
Now, this debt cannot be redeemed by the jiva [a soul somewhere in
time] himself. This is because in the process of exhausting the covers,
the jiva 'acts' and performs karmas, and these karmas then constitute a
vicious circle in which the debt of Kaal and Maya goes on multiplying.
It is only when the jiva takes shelter of the perfect master (Satguru
sharan) that the forest of the karmas of jiva which keeps on
accumulating in manakash (mind-sky) can be burnt.
Secondly, the jiva has to shed off the layers of Kaal and Maya and
while he does so, both of them fight a pitched battle against the jiva
who has to struggle hard and then gradually realise that alone,
single-handedly and unaided by the Satguru, he will not be able to
survive this battle of redemption of old debt laid on his back by the
Adi Karma. Then alone he will surrender his ego to the Satguru who then
takes over his battle, reinforces him and makes him vanquish Kaal and
Maya. (M.G. Gupta, Commentary on Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose)
This is what is meant by the verse:
Satguru sharan gaho mere pyaare, karain jugaat chukaaye: "Seek the
protection of the Satguru, my love, after paying the taxes, of karma."
(Swami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan. Poetry, Volume 1. Hymn 13. Discourse 8,
Agra, India)
21. Sants and Mahatmas say that only the loving devotees will enter the
Darbar (Court) of the true Supreme Being, be seated in His august
presence and enjoy the bliss of His darshan [vision]. Rest of the Jivas
[souls] who are engaged in various forms of Parmarth [spirituality],
will mostly be rewarded for their Shubha Karams with happiness for some
time. As they are not imbued with the desire for His darshan [vision],
and as they do not wish to meet with Sant Sat Guru, they cannot secure
admittance into His August Mansion [Realm].
22. The true and perfect lovers of the Lord, after reaching a
particular stage, become the beloved of the true Supreme Being. They
become so dear to Him that He does not like, at any time, to part with
them. Whatever they do or wish is acceptable to Him. In other words,
the Mauj [Will] of the Supreme Being and that of these loving devotees
become one. These loving devotees are the most beloved of the Supreme
Being and are called Mahboob-i-Ilahi (Beloved of God). They alone
attain to the status of Sant and Param Sant. This is the acme of
Bhakti[ love and devotion]. This is attained by those extremely rare
devotees who have no desire of any kind, but to meet with the Supreme
Father. (Huzur Maharaj - Rai Saligram, Prem Patra Radhasoami, Volume
Six, Agra, India)

Shabd
27: The ocean of existence is unfathomably vast and without any port of
safety. It cannot be crossed. If you meet Sat Guru [True Eternal
Light-giver], the boatman, then only will you get across and reach your
Abode. The world is a net which Maya [illusion] has cast for the Jiva
[unliberated soul]. Says Tulsi that, under the sway of greed and
attachment, the Jiva wanders in the transmigratory cycle.
Shabd
28: Concentrating your Surat [attention-faculty of the soul]
repeatedly, remain withdrawn towards the region of the eyes [third eye
center]. Cleansing the mirror, as it were, of the body and mind, let
your Surat proceed on. If you get the opportunity of looking beyond,
you will find the truth. Says Tulsi, if you become the dust of the holy
feet of Sants [Saints, souls who have reached the Fourth Lok -- fifth
plane/heaven or above], you will see Refulgence.
Shabd
29: Whosoever took proper care of his Surat, did not have any fear of
Kal [time, the lord of death]. His Surat ascended, and on rushing to
Gagan [inner mystic sky] reached her Lord. She met her Beloved on
repairing to the Abode of Agam Purush [Inaccessible Being]. Says Tulsi,
the illusions, delusions and misery of innumerable lives were thus
obliterated.
Shabd
30: Says Tulsi that He will now tell of the Abode, the whereabouts, the
seat and the Region of the Beloved. That the Beloved resides beyond
Brahm. The region of Sat Nam (who is the Beloved) is Amarpur
(Imperishable Region), an Abode of All Happiness. Tulsi says that
whoever attains the fourth Lok is called a Sant.

From, "Catechism of the Radhasoami Faith" (Prashnottar), by Huzur Maharaj
Q. 39. What is the mark of recognition of a Sant Satguru?
A.
39. The first mark of recognition is that the saints can only be those
who have their Abode in Sat Loka and who teach the path of the Shabda
(Word, Sound Current) and point out its Secret and who are themselves
Shabda Swarup within.
Secondly,
when any devotee or a deserving seeker appears before Them, his spirit
and mind may of themselves begin to concentrate and get elevated and
enjoy the bliss thereof.
Thirdly,
Their discourses are very precise, deep and effective and the listener
may get satisfied and convinced according to what he deserves and the
stage at which he is.
Fourthly, in case anybody begins to have faith in Them without argument, They grant him some internal experience and bliss.
Fifthly, They live according to what They teach. Sixthly, They take care of Their Satsangis internally and externally.

Glossary of the Radhasoami Faith)
Elaborating important metaphysical concepts and concluding that salvation is attainable in human life, Hazur Maharaj arrives at the four essential which are the essence his teachings; Sat shabd, Satguru, sat anurag and satsang.
(A) Sat Shabd or Sat Naam
Shabd, the first manifestation of Supreme Being, is the prime source of all energy and reservoir of all spirits. It is the essence, actor and protector of the entire creation. All harmony is due to shabd. Hazur Maharaj says that shabd is not mere sound; it is also the current or energy which accompanies commotion in the ocean of energy - the Supreme Being. Shabd is, therefore the formless essence of spirit-current which emanates from the highest reality and is present inherently with the same intensity in the different regions of creation. Dhunyatmak naam is the manifestation of shabd. It is Dhunyatmak, while worldly sounds are varnatmak. The Dhunyatmak name is Radhasoami and it can be heard in spiritual contemplation or yoga. Hazur attaches supreme importance to this Dhunyatmak name and says that not only does it resounds in different regions of creation but it also echoes in the innermost of jivas. He holds that surat which possesses inherent attraction for shabd, has been forced by its contact with mind and matter to break its contact with shabd. In order to re-establish the eternal communion of surat with shabd, one should practice surat-shabd-yog. Then alone surat will be able to cast off the fetters of mind and matter to enter the first grand division - its real true abode. Explaining the surat-shabd-yoga, Hazur says that in its practice one has to concentrate on teesra til, grasp the shabd of higher regions and ascend higher with the guidance of Sat shabd until he reaches the highest and the purest region - the Radhasoami Dham. He believes that the course followed by the current during the descent of spirit to lower regions must naturally be the only true path for its return of its original source, and whosoever finds this current is on right path to emancipation.
Hazur considers the surat-shabd-yoga as superior to all other practices of spirit-elevation. According to him those who withdraw the spirit entity with the help of current of pran (respiration) or the current of sight or of ambrosia can not reach beyond brahmand, because all these currents emanate from this region. He holds surat-shabd-yoga to be the easiest of all spiritual practices as it can be performed by man and women of every age who lead family life and are engaged in worldly duties to earn their livelihood Hazur, therefore, exhorts the jivas to follow the devotional path of surat-shabd-yoga and perform true shabd-bhakti.
(B) Satguru
The techniques of surat-shabd-yoga and the secrets of sat shabd can be revealed by Satguru alone who is the deh swarup of satpurush Radhasoami Dayal. Hazur says that nij-rup is the father and the reservoir while deh swarup is the son and the current. Satguru is also known as nij dhaar and nij putra of the Supreme Being. He functions in this world as the representative of the Supreme Being and possesses all His attributes - love, bliss, light, energy, truth and spirit.
The sole purpose of the incarnation of Supreme Being as Satguru is to redeem the jivas from the cycle of chaurasi, to reveal to them the efficacy of surat-shabd-yog and to engender into them the true and sincere love for the Supreme Being. Hazur believes that the real form of Santsatguru is one which is the chaitanya or omniscient being Himself assumes and as chaitanya is imperishable so is the form of the Satguru formless and imperishable. Santsatguru takes the devotee to the formless region of pure spirit through his essential form and makes him realize this truth during the course of his spiritual contemplation. The role of Santsatguru is like that of a transformer. He receives spiritual currents from the Supreme Being, harnesses them and then charges the devotees with as much love and spiritual bliss as he deems fit. The jivas engrossed in worldly activities can try to attain salvation through the grace and mercy of Santsatguru. Satguru does not exhibit spiritual powers to the world yet he attracts the jivas by removing the covers of coarse matter from their spirit, thus awakening their inner self. He generates true love and devotion in their heart and enables them to perform the surat-shabd-yog. The jivas can combat the evil forces of kam (passion), krodh (anger), lobh (greed), moh (attachment) and ahankar (ego), and come out of the clutches of kal and maya only through the grace of Satguru. They will then be qualified to efface the evil effects of karma and get on the real road to redemption.
In a nutshell, Hazur's guru is love, light, truth and the true Supreme Being. He relieves the restless souls from worldly pangs and grants them eternal solace and relief. He leads them from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge and from death to immortality. Hazur advises the jivas to search out for such a guru and worship him. A guru of the time is the real friend, philosopher and guide, a true benefactor and protector who looks after their spiritual and mundane interests. By his discourses, he removes the devotees' doubts and difficulties. He alone can charge them with pure spiritual love and issue instruction regarding the practice of surat-shabd-yog.
Hazur holds that Santsatguru is ever present in the world. In case the guru departs from the world, he nominates his successor and enjoins upon devotees to have the same veneration for his successor. The departed guru emanates his spiritual currents in the present guru or virtually comes to exist in his successor's form. Both forms become one in spirit. But, Hazur holds, the guru in the past form can not inspire the same zeal and enthusiasm in the heart of devotee as the guru in the present form.
According to Hazur, the jivas are so engrossed in the world and its objects that they can hardly recognize the Satguru. Such a devotee as pines to meet the Satguru can alone get an opportunity to come to his satsang. At the very first sight some of the devotees recognize the true Master and begin loving him intensely. Such devotees then become worthy of performing surat-shabd-yoga. Indeed, those who come in contact with such a devotee are also enlightened. His love for the Master rests upon a rock-like foundation of faith.
As regards the mass of followers, they are supposed to serve the Satguru with body, mind and soul and practice surat-shabd-yoga regularly. However, a total surrender to the Master is the ideal which in turn generates true love for the Supreme Being. Those who practice this mode of devotional faith, may find a unique inner transformation may one day succeed in reaching the ultimate destination.
(C) Sat Anurag
Hazur defines sat anurag as sincere love or a strong fervent desire and perseverance to approach the Supreme Being. Such a desire, he holds should outweigh all worldly desires and it gradually raises the fortunate possessor of this lofty passion to the highest region. Glorifying the cult of love, Hazur says that knowledge without love for the Supreme Being is futile and tends towards untruth and darkness or materialism, while love turns everything to good use and leads to enlightenment and truth. He considers the noble passion of love as the most powerful means for removing obstacles and discarding superstitions and doubts. Pure love, says he, sheds the light of grace as it forms a link with the Supreme Being. He elucidates this by saying that sincere love is reciprocal and that the Supreme Being takes special care of such a devotee and draws him gradually towards the grand centre of pure light and attraction and thus towards Himself. Such persons whose hearts are imbued with worldly love and passion, recede from this centre and fly away towards darkness and untruth. Selfish love brings on egotism and pride and sows the seed of hatred, jealousy and disregard in the minds of hundreds of associates and neighbours, while pure and sacred love for the Supreme Being creates humility, meekness and an affectionate regard for kindreds, neighbours and humanity in general. He further says that whereas self-love will never part with anything except for the sake of its own aggrandizement and indulgence in sensual pleasures, holy love is always ready to sacrifice anything to gain admission into the presence of the Supreme Being.
According to Hazur, love is the basis of creation and the cause of its sustenance and preservation. For every wave of love, in the devotee's heart brings goodness and joy from the Supreme Being and every thought springing from such a heart is a harbinger of good work and good service. He asserts that true love knows no bounds and like its source, it is extensive and far-reaching in its beneficial results. The effect of true love is sublime and all good qualities and goodness gradually find their home in the heart in which it dwells. It ultimately takes one to the highest region of spiritual love and so a devotee should first establish contact with eternal spiritual love, the Santsatguru, the only means to salvation.
(D) Satsang
By satsang Hazur means the company of the Santsatguru of the time. If a devotee is unable to search out the Santsatguru, he should attain satsang of a Sadhguru or that of a premi abhyasi.
Hazur has also described satsang as the holy service conducted under the authority of Santsatguru or his representative - congregational prayer, listening to Satguru's discourses and meditating to enjoy eternal bliss of Satguru's darshan. This, Hazur calls external satsang where devotees join together in the performance of such acts of faith and charity as are inspired by love and desire to approach the Supreme Being.
Another type of satsang may be styled as internal satsang - the application of mind and spirit to sound currents at the time of spiritual practice and an effort to elevate them to higher spheres.
The advantages of satsang are numerous. It sanctifies a devotee, quenches his thirst, clears his doubts and elevates him to higher regions. Hazur holds that true satsang helps in effacing the evil effects of jivas' karma and worldly attachments and maya are easily thrown aside giving enormous spiritual benefits to devotees. Hazur Maharaj has asserted that a sense of complete detachment from the world and its transitory objects will definitely grow through satsang and the devotee will feel intensely inspired by spontaneous love and devotion for the Supreme Being. He further says that since all spirit entities emanated from one single supreme spiritual source, people of all caste, colours and creeds can attain satsang and derive spiritual solace and relief.
A satsangi is a person who gets initiated to the Radhasoami faith and has unshakable faith in it and acts truly in conformity with its beliefs and practices. Hazur has prescribed a rigid code of moral conduct for a satsangi. This is reproduced here, more or less in Hazur's own words.
An English rendering of a verse composed by Sant Radhaswami (Radhasoami) Sahab taken from the book titled "Satsang Yoga - Part II" by Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj.
[Fix or still your gaze at the door in the (inner) sky.|
So as to grasp the (Quintessential) Sound perceiving which puts all the worldly botheration or troubles to an end (the botheration of the world can end, in true sense, only if the cycle of rebirth is got rid of or transcended.)||
Learn, O Inexperienced, the secret of the Sound.| Why do you remain lost in the illusory traps of the mind? ||
Draw or collect your attention, or current of consciousness, and look attentively at the `Til Dwar' or `The Third Eye'. |
(When the surat gets focussed at the Bright point inside), a stream of sound is heard coming from the right direction. ||
(The sound emanating from) the left direction is the snare or web of Death.| Discarding or ignoring that (that is, not listening to the sound coming from the left direction) keep your attention carefully focussed (to the sound coming from the right direction).||
Listen with love to the sounds of the gong/bell and conch.| Beyond that is (heard) the resonating `OM' sound. ||
(Subsequently,) Hark to the `RarankAr' sound in the Realm of "ShUnya" (Void). |
Melody of the flute (is heard) in the "bhanwar gufA" (whirling/spiralling cave). ||
Listen to the enchanting lute in the Realm of Sattalok (The sphere of pure consciousness, of Quintessential Sound).|
Nothing can be said of the sound in the regions/ planes of Alakh (Invisible) and Agam or Unintelligible (According
to universally agreed opinion of Santmat and the Upanishads, beyond the
zone of sattalok, lies the infinite realm of "nihshabdam paramam padam"
or, the Highest/Ultimate State of Soundlessness. It is this very state
that is being alluded to here by 'alakh' and 'agam'). ||
I, says Sant Radhaswami, have thus clearly explained all the secrets (of inner meditation). |
Hold that dearly within your heart.||]
The Rope Given by the Master So You May Leave the Well of Bhav
Radhasoami Reality: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Radhasoami-Reality {"This
mysterious path is described in the holy books, but it cannot be found
simply by the study of sacred texts. It is found by the grace and
guidance of an accomplished Teacher."}
A man once fell into a well. Someone came along, had compassion for him
and wanted to save him. So he threw a rope into the well and said, "I
am holding this rope. You come out." But instead of holding on to that
rope, the man began to question him: "Who has made this well? Why was
it made? Why did I fall down in here?" When the man who wanted to save
him had been there for some time, he said, "Many fools like you can
again fall into this well," and walked away. So Master said that what
was required was, first of all, to hold that rope and come out. And
after coming out of the well he could have asked any question he liked.
Guru Kabir has said: "Paanchai paanch paras ras, shabd gandh aru roop.
Inhakar kahaa na keejiye, bahuri parab bhavakoop". Do not follow the
five (objects of physical senses: touch, taste, sound, smell and form)
or else, you would fall again in the well of 'bhav'(existence or cycles
of birth & death).
The "Rope" of the Inner Light and Sound in Another Kind of Well: The Inverted Well (from a post by Pravesh K. Singh)
Sant Paltoo Sahib says: "There is an inverted well in the (inner) sky wherein a lamp keeps burning."
The head of a man, standing above the neck, is like an inverted well in
which (the divine) lamp or flame burns or is alight. This lamp emitting
Light is seen by the practitioner of meditation. Tulsi Sahab has said,
"Jaise mandir Deepak baaraa. Aise joti hot ujiyaaraa," meaning, "Just
as a lamp burns in the temple, our inner sky is illumined by the
Light." The well that we have on the earth is open at the top. This is
the straight, upright or erect well, as all of us know. Man's head,
however, is closed at the top and open from the bottom; the way to its
top is from its bottom. That's why a man's head is also referred to as
the inverted well. Verses of Sant Paltoo Sahib:
"The lamp (inside the head) burns without any oil and wick. All the six
seasons and all the twelve months, this lamp keeps burning.
"Those who have found a Guru (and act according to his teaching) are able to behold this Light.
"Those who are deprived of a Guru are not able to contemplate this Light.
"A Sound emanates out of the Light of this lamp.
"Only that practitioner, and no body else, who has sunk himself deep
into trance or intense meditation, in all his awareness, is able to
perceive this divine Sound.
"Blessed is he, says Paltoo, who listens to or perceives that Sound.
"There is an inverted well in the (inner) Sky wherein a lamp keeps burning."
Kabir says, boiled rice with lentils, seasoned with tasty salt, is the best of foods: I cannot slit throats to have meat with my bread.

Ants in a Burning Log - Dharamdas Meets Kabir
Dharma-das was extremely devout and practiced all the rules of charity
toward the poor and guests. One day Dharma-das arrived at Mathura on a
tour of sacred bathing places. After bathing in the Yamuna, he set
about preparing his food. When he looked in the fire, he saw that an
army of ants was desperately trying to escape from a burning log. He
was filled with compassion and vowed not to eat the food. He put it on
a plate and went out to find a suitable donee. Just then Kabir arrived
in Mathura. Dharma-das offered the food to Kabir. Kabir told him:
"Listen, merchant Dharma-das! When you were making this food, millions
of ants were killed. Do you want to burden me with all this sin?" As
Kabir spoke, all the rice grains on the plate turned into ants and
began to crawl back to the ground.
Dharma-das then asked Kabir who he was. Kabir said: "In this Kali Yuga
my name is Kabir. ... I gave you a boon in a previous life. For this
reason I have come here to enlighten you."

The Soul of Tukarama: Saint of Maharashtra By James Bean Copyright March 2005
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading about Saint Tukarama ever since I
learned of him a decade and a half ago. In fact, I've tried to collect
all of the available books on the life, teachings, and poetry of
Tukarama that are in English. I agree with the Indian scholar Dr. R.D.
Ranade who said:
"Tukarama exhibits all the doubts and disbeliefs, the weaknesses and
the sufferings, the anxieties and the uncertainties, through which
every aspiring soul must pass, before he can come into the life of
Light, Spirit and Harmony. There is no other instance in the whole
galaxy of the Maratha Saints, barring perhaps Namadeva, which can be
regarded as illustrative of this human element which we find in
Tukarama."
Tukarama does have many analogues in literature: the poetry of John
Bunyan, the Thanksgiving Hymns of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Psalms
of King David.
Saint Tukarama (1598 - 1649 AD) was born at Dehu near Poona in the
State of Maharashtra, India. He is the most famous of Maratha poets,
and one of the major voices of Bhakti Marg -- the Way of Love and
Devotion. His compositions of poetry, prayers and hymns (gathas and
abhangas) are filled with human doubts and frailties. He also expresses
words of ecstatic love and rapturous union with his Divine Beloved that
filled his soul to overflowing. Tukarama was truly one of India's
greatest Sants (Saints).
I highly recommend his poetry to any mystically inclined soul who's a
connoisseur of the inspiring spiritual classics of the East. Think of
Tukarama as another Rumi, Hafiz, or Kabir.
A Very Human Saint Who Tells God Just What He Thinks!
The largest translation of his poetry in English is, The Poems of
Tukarama by J. Nelson Fraser, published in Delhi by Motilal Banarsidass
Books. This is from a section titled, "Remonstrations With God:"

It is not right that you should forget your servants; for there is
perfect justice at your feet. Tuka says, 'You are not ashamed, though we
are sinking in the gulf of anguish!
Tukarama's Spiritual Practices/Sadhana
Tukarama wrote about several practices that transformed his life. He
prayed for help in this way: "Take, Lord, my life Live thou thy life
through me." (Oxford Books of Prayer, Oxford University Press)
He taught the principle that we are influenced by the company we keep,
that spiritual community or companionship (Satsang) can be nurturing
and supportive to our efforts. He writes:
Let me meet people of my own kind, so that I may be satisfied. My mind pants to meet those who love God. Mere contact with the sandalwood tree, and plants all around emanate the same aroma. Likewise have I embraced the feet of Sants [Saints], and my separateness is extinguished.
Like other Nirguna Bhakti Sants, he believed that God is within all
living beings, so we can see God in those that we meet - as in Namaste'
('the God in me bows to the God in you'). This realization changes
everything in our consciousness, changes our universe into a place
filled with living forms of God - all living things: "The Kingdom of
God that is spread out upon the earth...." (Gospel of Thomas, Saying
113)
Another Important Spiritual Practice for Tukarama is the Chanting of
Various Names of God (Simran), Remembering God by Repeating his Name
He who utters the Name of God while walking, gets the merit of a sacrifice at every step. Blessed in his body. It is itself a place of pilgrimage. He who utters the Name of God without ceasing receives liberation while living.
The Devotee Becomes God By Repeating-Merging in God's Name
Vitthala Naam Mukti
Can one be entangled in the mire of Illusion When the Name of the Lord is constantly on his lips?
One who ceaselessly meditates on Him, While walking, talking, eating or sleeping, While engaged in worldly duties, The Lord is with him at all times.
Repeat constantly the Name of the Lord, And know that devotion is indispensable for deliverance. Thus the devotee becomes the Lord Himself, And thus has the Lord become Tuka. (Tukaram - Saint of Maharashtra, RS Books)
The Bhajans of Sants
Another important ingredient for the spiritual life was kirtana or
bhajans, the singing of hymns of praise. I do notice that a very large
number of mystics have composed their own devotional songs or poems.
This creative outpouring from the heart helps to stimulate something
deep inside: the Cry of the Soul. Saint Tukarama's explanation of this
focuses upon the need for Bhakti, the need to engender love and
devotion:
This God cannot be attained except through love. What is required is pure devotion. That is the way to liberation. In fact, God does not care for anything except love. (Mysticism In India by R.D. Ranade, SUNY Press)
All these spiritual practices help to transform the body, emotions,
thoughts, and one's very existence into expressions of the soul, our
true identity and spiritual essence. This makes it much easier to have
enough peace of mind to be able to meditate -- to enter the world of
the soul during meditation.
Infinite bliss has filled my entire being, the stream of love divine flows freely and I sing the Lord's Name unceasingly. I lead a life eternal that cannot ever ebb. I repeat ever and again the Name of the Lord; to me, this shore of the ocean of life and the other one [eternity], are truly one and the same. (Tukaram - Saint of Maharashtra, RS Books)
Tukarama, Speaking from the Ecstasy of Mystic Contemplation
I have found a Sea of Love, an inexhaustible flood; I have opened a treasure of spiritual knowledge, it diffuses the lustre of a million suns, arisen in thy worshipper's souls.
The same Tuka, who earlier in life composed many candid and resentful
prayers, lamenting over famine and misfortune, ended up being one of
India's greatest poet-mystics and Saints.
The book Tukaram - Saint of Maharashtra, published by RS Books, makes
available many of his mystical compositions pertaining to the
experience of Inner Light, the Sound Current and the Higher Planes.
DARKNESS FLEES BEFORE THE SUN
I penetrated the Eye Center and perceived the Light within. Darkness has vanished, And the sun has burst forth in full splendor.
So long as the soul knows not itself, The brilliance of the sun cannot be seen.
Says Tuka, I see my true self and the Lord Pervade the whole creation as one effulgence.
INNER EXPERIENCE - THE DOOR WITHIN
Through the Eye, my vision has risen to Daswandwar, And my soul has cast off its coverings.
Firmly established at the Tenth Door, I adore my Master's Radiant Form, which I recognize by His grace.
The bubble of illusion has been pricked, The Almighty, Merciful Lord has revealed Himself.
In the blissful state of fulfillment, Tuka, without hands, clings to His feet.
THE SOUND CURRENT OR MUSIC OF THE CREATOR
Tuka is absorbed in the surging wave of Sound Divine; Its resplendence spreads through his innermost being. The Lord has made His home in me, The lamp of eternal Light has been kindled. The all-pervading Sound, O Tuka, is the Lord Himself.
Online Glossary of Radhaswami Terms: http://www.angelfire.com/linux/radhasoami/glossary.htm Soami Ji Maharaj's Letters to Huzur Maharaj - Document The Five Letters Letter 1 My dearest and dearer than life, I
wish you all health and happiness, but keep uppermost in your mind
Bhajan, Dhyan and devotion to the Supreme Being. The Grace of the
Supreme Being on you is the same as it was before. Attune yourself to
the Will of the Lord. Renouncing all thoughts of the past and future,
keep your spirit immersed in Shabd at the time of Bhajan. Fix your spirit in Shabd, and Shabd is in Gagan. Fill your heart with yearning; and heart is at Trikuti. Unite
your spirit with Shabd and see beauteous sights. The Til is located
within Sukhmana (an artery of the human body, which lies between Ida,
on the right and Pingla, on the left), and the form of Jyoti [Light] is
in the Til [Third Eye]. Sit
in Bhajan [inner Sound Meditation] after making your mind and spirit
calm, with the help of love and yearning. By the Grace of the Guru,
your object will be gained; rest assured, and have no fear whatsoever. Letter 2 The
contents of your letter have been read out to Huzur Soamiji Maharaj and
your cherished wish has been conveyed to Him. Huzur was greatly
pleased, and He graciously observed, “Your request is granted. Love and
devotion, yearning and earnestness, would now go on increasing day by
day. If the Lord pleases, (and it is, in fact, His pleasure) you would
not forget Him even for a moment. Rest assured that His loving memory
will always remain with you inwardly in a subtle form. This gift is
bestowed on you as a matter of grace, for you have done nothing to
incur so much of Huzur's pleasure as to deserve such a great gift. Just
as a charitable person gives to an importunate beggar out of his
habitual compassion, so to you too, He has given, given, given. You
will now come soon. The Lord is omnipotent.” Letter 3 Beloved of the Satguru, Beloved of the Lord, Adorned with Shabd, My dear Salig Ram! Always
remember the Lord. My blessings to you are that with a sincere mind,
sincere spirit, sincere love, sincere devotion, sincere yearning and
sincere attention in the contemplation of the Guru, you may peruse this
letter. Your letter full of love and yearning to hand. I have
understood its express and implied contents. Although I keep on praying
for your physical attendance at His court, yet no definite reply is
forthcoming so far. It appears, however, from the existing situation,
that special Grace and Mercy are being bestowed on you, in a greater
measure. Therefore, giving up all restlessness, keeping His Mauj and
Will uppermost, consider Him as your Saviour. Although you are deprived
of Darshan, Satsang, Seva and attendance on the Guru at present, yet do
not imagine that this is detrimental to your interests in any way. He
is present with you all the time in Shabd Form. Therefore, banish all
worry, and look with sincere attention and spirit, and you will get His
vision. Such a situation is also not without some hidden good. There is
certainly joy and pleasure in union, but at intervals, separation is
also equally desirable. Certainly you are likely to be present here
soon. Whatever earnings of Bhajan you make, bring that capital as a
present for me. I look forward to you for this earning. You are earning
for all. What is wrong with my lot that you are so slow m this respect?
If you come empty handed, then you will be classed among the unworthy
sons and idlers and will be disgraced. Take care! Be alert! Come to me
with due caution. You have been sent away already; and you will be
turned out again. It is, therefore, proper that giving up sloth, and
pacifying the mind, do your best in Bhajan. In short, what I mean is,
that you bring such a wonderful and novel present for me, that hearing
about and seeing it, I may feel a unique pleasure. Else, the Lord is
all powerful, and know ye that He is ever kind on you. Letter 4 My dear Saligram, Always
remember the Lord, and, knowing that He is always with you, imbue
yourself with His love. I have come to know the state of your
restlessness and uneasiness all these days owing to separation and
overflow of love. But the Lord is with you all the time. Why are you so
restless? This, too, is a sort of joy, which is particularly bestowed
on lovers only, and its relish is experienced only during the state of
separation. Its bitterness, in fact, is also very sweet indeed. Of
course outward darshan you get only occasionally, but the Lord is
watchful in Shabd Form and is always with you. Lord in Shabd form is always with you and is never far. Have patience, and you will get a glimpse of True Light. Satnam,
the Name of Sat Purush, is resounding in Sat Lok. Raise your Surat with
Shabd, and you will have darshan of the refulgent form of the Lord. Be
saturated with His love and yearning. Keep away from evil tendencies
and leanings. Combating with mind and its forces, remain absorbed in
Shabd. Further,
your letter of yearning was read out in the assembly of all the
Satsangis. All were pleased to hear it, and, in a way, it served as an
example to them all, to emulate and learn what true love means. The
Lord will, out of His own Grace and Mercy, bestow upon you the
blessings of true love in its entirety. Further the Lord is all
powerful. Radhaji
sends Her blessings for your welfare and is pleased with you and says
that She will intercede on your behalf for your early return. Letter 5 It
has been ordered that whatever you had asked of the Exalted Darbar of
Sat Guru Saheb has been granted to you. Don't be impatient. Giving up
all restlessness, remember the Holy Feet of the Guru. You are not aware
of the Guru's wisdom and His acts. You will, surely, come and meet me,
but meanwhile the Kal's head is being broken. Do not think that you
have been separated, but that Kal is being made subservient to you, and
how many people are being benefited by it. That is why your separation
has been tolerated by me, and you yourself know it. Knowing all this,
why do you feel so uneasy? This exactly is the condition of those
charitable and great souls who live for others; the reward (Jagir) that
they receive is that they are deprived of food, drink, sleep, laughter,
conversation and all comforts of the body and the mind. But you do
allow Kal to gain a little strength now and then. So rest assured, the
Guru will look after this, when you meet Him. All does not depend upon
presence in person, though you are shortly to be present, do you know
it? Look up to Mauj and Will of the Guru. He is always gracious and
merciful and will never keep you devoid of His Grace. An ocean of bliss
and happiness is being filled for you. You will bathe in it, drink its
nectar and will distribute much of it to others as well. You know not
what gift to ask for, nor the manner in which to ask for it. The Giver
(Lord) is ashamed of your petty requests. Such requests simply are put
forward by unworthy people. What are these trifles that you ask for?
Henceforth, it is not necessary for you to ask for anything. Now go on
observing what the Guru gives you, of His own accord, which you could
never even dream of. Well, what can a child ask for? At the most he
will ask for a ball and a bat or a yo-yo or a top, whereas his father
has got prepared for him a garden and a glass palace. But what does he
know of these things? After these days of childhood and ignorance are
over, the moon and the sun will be the balls and the milky way the
stick and the Lord and His devotee (Sewak) will play together in the
fields of Sunn and Maha-Sunn, and Shabds will resound all round. Oh one
side, your sisters will be there and on the other your brothers. How
great will be your bliss when you experience those ecstasies ! This, in
fact, is only an illustration, but that Reservoir is, of course,
fathomless. And now the time is coming for you to see all this glory.
Therefore, be patient and have endurance, and furthermore Sat Guru is
the Almighty Lord.

The
spiritual classics, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Nazm yaani Chhand bandh
(Poetry), and, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Bartik (Prose) by Soami Ji Maharaj
are very complex books even in Hindi, and all-the-more-so if the
attempt is made to translate them into English, especially the mystical
poetry. Swami Ji himself says, "How shall I openly speak of its process
(the process of creation in Pinda: the material universes, And: the
astral dimensions, and Brahmand: Universal Mind realms -- this best
remains a mystery), for none can really comprehend its secrets and
idioms which I will have to have to employ to reveal them."
Often
resembling Near-Death Experiences or OOBE's, Swami Ji's mystic-verses
are quite intricate with layers of meaning, and contain countless terms
for various heavenly regions, states of consciousness, visionary and
auditory experiences he encountered as he was in communion with his
Beloved Radhasoami (Soul-Lord, Lord of the Soul). The Sar Bachan
Radhasoami Poetry is a most other-worldly, heavenly document, based
upon Swami Ji's own inner travels, attainments and spiritual
realizations. "For about fifteen years, Soami Ji Maharaj used to shut
Himself up in a room which was within another room [a meditation room
within a room of his home in Agra]. He was all the time absorbed in the
bliss of Divine Light and Sound meditation." (Huzur Maharaj) After this
period of deep exploration of the inner regions and union with his
Beloved Radhasoami in Sach Khand, Swami Ji emerged and began his
Mission of public satsang and teaching. "In January 1861, Soami Ji
started publicly explaining the methods of the Saints to a few people
who gathered at his home. This satsang (true association, association
with Eternal Truth) continued for nearly seventeen years, during which
period about four thousand persons - men and women -- Hindus, Muslims,
Jains, Sravagis, and a few Christians were initiated by him into the
Path of the Saints, i.e. Radhasoami path (the Path of the Supreme
Being). Most of these were householders; but some (about three hundred)
were Sadhus [monks] also." (Encyclopaedia of Saints of India, Volume
Nineteen: Radhasoami, Criterion Publications, New Delhi)
Soami
Ji even made use of some Persian or Sufi mystical terminology at times,
and composed some ghazals in Persian. "Soami Ji's father and
grand-father were Persian scholars." (The Biography of Soami Ji
Maharaj) Soami Ji "acquired a working knowledge of Arabic and
Sanskrit", earlier in his life for a time taught Persian, and even
"wrote a book in Persian." (Radhasoami Faith - a Historical Study) It
seems rather appropriate then for someone like M.G. Gupta, who has
translated all six volumes of the Masnawi of Jalaluddin Rumi, the
poetry of Sarmad, and the Diwan-i Hafiz, to produce this most excellent
new translation of the Sar Bachan Poetry and Prose in English -- all
three volumes.
For
Swami Ji, love for the Beloved Radhasoami, the Lord of All Souls, is
central to traveling upon the right Currents of Sound, Light, and
Divine Love within. This bhakti spirit is the right-foundation and the
Positive Power to base one's spiritual practice upon. "Always remember
the Lord, and, knowing that He is always with you, imbue yourself with
His love." (Soami Ji, in a letter to Huzur Maharaj)
In
the Sar Bachan are hymns of praise, conversational prayers directed
towards the Friend, the Beloved, the Object of his Communion, the Lover
of his soul: the Merciful Lord of the Soul: Radhasoami Dayal. In this
loving context of devotional bhakti, meditation practices take the
devotee-soul upon an interior journey beyond illusion, beyond time and
duality, to an Ultimate Reality, the Ocean of Love, Swami Ji Maharaj
describes as "Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent with attributes of
Grace, Mercy, Love, Bliss and Peace." Swami Ji Maharaj says, "From one
step to another the soul beholds strange things which cannot be
described in human language. Every region and everything is utterly
beyond words. What beauty and glory! How can I describe them? There is
nothing here to convey the idea. I am helpless...Love plays the supreme
part. It is all love. So says RADHASOAMI." (Sant Radhasoami Sahab)
Radhasoami
is the name for the Nameless One (Anami), the Soundless One (Anadi), in
the Highest Region. As Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj once said, "The
individual soul has descended....from the Soundless State to the
essence of Sound, from Sound to Light, and finally from the realm of
Light to the realm of Darkness.....[In meditation practice] we travel
back from the realm of Darkness to the realm of Light, from the Light
to Divine Sound, and from the realm of Sound to the Soundless State."
Mystic Poetry of Swami Ji Maharaj in, The Quintessential Discourse Radhasoami
If
you are a lamp (deepak -- lamp of earthen vessel with wick and oil), I
am turned into a moth (patanga) which in the company of the lamp
reduces itself to ashes. If you are a black bee I am turned into a
small worm (keet which thinks constantly of the bee and eventually
becomes it); in my case, I think only of the most perfect, sagacious,
skillful, shrewd and wise Radhasoami who has graciously met me. If you
are the sandalwood (tree) I am a serpent intertwined with it; by the
touch of your feet, I have become serene, tranquil and calm (sheetal
bhayee). If you are an ocean, I am like a wave; I rise from you and I
retire and return unto you. If you are a pearl, I am the thread (round
which the pearl is woven); I, like the thread, never let go and forsake
you (who is like a pearl to me).
Lord
Radhasoami! Do shower mercy and grace on me now, for you are seated
inside each and everyone as the knower of all inner secrets
(antaryami). If you are the moon, I am like its phases -- rotation and
revolution causing its phases, new moon and full moon -- so that I
depend on you and I am conditioned by you both in my waning and waxing.
I am like a small girl while you are both my father and mother; day and
night I play in your lap.
Selections from the Hidayat Namah (Book of Esoteric Instructions) of Swami Ji
When
your eye, turning inward into your brain, pierces the sky within and
your spirit leaving your body, flies upward, you will sight the heaven
which is the location of the post of Sahasdal Kanwal (One
Thousand-Petalled Lotus). A thousand petals of this lotus are
performing the work relating to all the three loks [worlds]. By
sauntering around this sphere, you will be immensely delighted and you
will sight Niranjan (the Spotless), the lord of the three worlds.......
......Via
the heavenly route, the surat [soul] keeps on soaring and flying and
from afar, whiffs of fragrances of sandal from Malyagir, and other
sweet scents of diverse varieties keep on gently blowing and the seeker
then hears the innumerable sounds of flutes. Smelling these fragrances
and hearing these sounds, the surat continues to soar and move forward.
When
it traverses this plane (of the Rotating Cave), it attains to the
outpost (naaka) of Sattlok, whence flows the sound Satt Satt and Haq
Haq, emanating from the harp. Hearing this sound, the spirit getting
ecstatic goes on piercing and penetrating into the higher sphere and
from there the view of golden and silvery streams and rivulets, full of
the limpid water of life (aab-i-zulal) and huge gardens of which every
tree seems 10,000,000 jojans high, and where instead of fruits and
flowers, millions and billions of suns and moons hang from their
branches. Innumerable spirits and hamsas sing and blissfully warble on
these trees, instead of birds. The spectacle and sight of this sphere
is marvellous and indeed ineffable. Seeing this spectacle, the spirit
or surat enters the Sattlok and catches the sight of Satt Purush.......
.........Thence
the surat [soul] moved upward and made it to the Inaccessible Sphere
(Agam Lok) whose stretch is quintillion palang (mahashankh) and the
body of the Agam Purush is as vast as a quintillion quintillion palang.
The hamsas [heavenly beings] dwelling there have a marvellous and
unique form, and bliss and beatitude of that sphere is overwhelmingly
wonderful. My spirit (says Soamiji Maharaj) stayed and rested there for
a very long period.
Beyond
this, the spirit got the glimpses of Radhasoami, that is Anami Purush
and merged into Him. That Abode is Infinite, Incalculable and Endless
and it is the Real, Eternal Abode of faqirs (Saints). Having attained
to this, all the Saints fell into silence; as it is, I also now take to
silence.
[English rendering of Hindi translation, by Maharshi Santsewi ji Paramhans (1920-2007), of a verse composed by Sant Shiv Dayal Singh or Sant Radhaswami Sahab (1818-1878) of Agra, U.P., India, the first Guru of Radhaswami (Radhasoami) Sect of Santmat, excerpted from the October 2004 edition of the Hindi Monthly "Shanti Sandesh" (Message of Peace) published from Maharshi Mehi Ashram, Kuppa Ghat, Bhagalpur, Bihar, India -812 003.
In
the following verse Sant Radhaswami Sahab has explained very lucidly
the ideal way of living as well as meditation to be adopted by a
spiritual seeker who has a genuine thirst for Self-Realisation or for
getting rid of the painful cycle of births & deaths. A few words or
phrases used in the verse are difficult of interpretation and call for
an experienced and self-realised Sant for clear elucidation of their
true connotation. The Hindi version of the verse is not reproduced here
for the purposes of brevity.
