The USAF QU-22 entered the Viet Nam war in 1969 as an electronic signal relay aircraft, within the "Igloo White" Infiltration data collection program. Despite considerable research, testing, and modification, the demands of the mission profile upon this civilian light aircraft (Beech Bonanza) were beyond its capabilities as modified to meet USAF requirements.
Three pilots and eight of 29 aircraft deployed were lost in South East Asia--none to enemy action--in addition to one stateside test pilot fatality. The QU-22 was withdrawn from service in 1972 as US involvement in the war was reduced, and before a more capable design could be fielded.
