The city of Pune is situated near the western coast of India, approximately 115 miles south-east of Mumbai. It is one of the many cities situated on the Deccan plateau, which forms the triangular portion of India, below the Tropic of Cancer. Pune lies on lat. 18 30'N and long. 74 55'E and on the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. 'Punaka' is the name by which Pune was known in the ancient times. However, the etymology of the name is uncertain and some believe that it has been derived from the Sanskrit root 'poo', that is to purify. Pune comprises a cosmopolitan community and a wide range of economic and social populace. Pune, a city of 2.3 million, is the seat of North Indian Classical music and it always has been and will be one of the eminent centers of education in India.
Pune today, is very much a modern city,but still retains its quaint old values and traditions. It is one of the fastest growing industrial area.Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. It boost a fine University and number of educational institutions. It is a Military Cantonment,the Head quarter of Southern Command of Indian Army, Air base for Jaguar,Mig29 and Su30 Aircrafts of Indian Air Force.
Pune lies in the seismically active zone of Koyna Region, which is about 100 km south of Pune. Pune has recently been upgraded to lie in the zone IV, which is the second most dangerous seismic zone in India. Pune has experienced some moderate-intesity and many low-intensity earthquakes. Although earthquakes were not known to have originated in Pune itself, an earthquake of a very slight intensity took place in Pune that had its epicentre in Dehu, about 13 km from the main city.
