John Gora and Gorale

A short biography

Born in Poland, John Gora emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario with his family in 1974.  He was exposed to music right from birth as all of his family was very musically inclined and his mother led a folk choir in Poland. He began playing the clarinet and saxophone in high school.

In 1979, Gora formed a trio which expanded to a combo, playing at local Canadian Legion halls and catering to "continental" music crowds.

Since 1989 John Gora and Gorale (Mountaineers) performs as a six or seven piece band with instruments such as:  saxophone, clarinet, trumpets, drums, bass, guitar, concertina, keyboards and of course vocals.

In 1990 the band released their first polka CD, READY FOR TAKEOFF with a polka version of "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" becoming their first hit.

The band has released an additional 6 recordings: TAKE A SPIN in 1994, DUTY FREE POLKAS in 1998 (Grammy Nominated), FOLLOW ME in 2000 (Grammy Nominated), CAN AM POLKAS in 2002, PANGORA'S BOX in 2004 (Grammy Nominated) and BULLETPROOF POLKAS in 2007 also Grammy Nominated.

In August of 2008 John and the band were recognized by the  IPA (International Polka Association and won awards for the "CD of the Year" for their recording BULLETPROOF POLKAS and IPA " Song of the Year" for the song "Kiss of Fire".  "Bulletproof Polkas" CD is also nominated for the JUST PLAIN FOLKS MUSIC AWARDS - the ceremony takes place in Nashville, TN on August 29, 2009

On June 25, 2009 the eight and most current recording was released "POLKA PLAYIN' FOOL"

The band has performed throughout Canada, USA, Europe and even cruised through the Caribbean performing at various festivals, dances and special events.

The band will adapt to almost any musical style that is called for at a specific venue. Although, John Gora Band records only polka CD's – they are very well known as being a VARIETY BAND  playing multiple musical genres that include classic R & R, Country & Western, Big Band, Swing, Cajun, Tex-Mex influences and a flare of many ethnic hits for music lovers who enjoy Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Italian, German and Latin music.

The John Gora Band: "Dynamic, crowd-pleasing stage performances have become a trademark of this group" - S.L.

John Gora is a member of AFM (America Federation of Musicians)   Local #293 Hamilton, Ontario and a voting member of USPA (United States Polka Association), IPA (International Polka Association), NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) and CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences).  Plus a member of Midwest Polka Association MPA. Wisconsin Polka Boosters Club and Buffalo Polka Boosters Club.

For further information about the band please contact John Gora. We will travel to your event to entertain everyone no matter where the destination!

Thank you and remember that "LIVE" music is best.

CASIMIR PULASKI MADE
HONORARY U.S. CITIZEN

Washington, D.C. (PMN)—Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced on October 22, 2009, that the Senate unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming Casimir Pulaski an honorary citizen of the United States. The legislation passed the House of Representative earlier in October and it went to the President for his signature after the Senate vote. President Barack Obama signed the bill on November 6, 2009, thereby making it law.

"Casimir Pulaski made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of American freedom," Durbin said. "When we think of our nation's struggle for freedom in its infancy, we must remember General Casimir Pulaski and his indelible contribution to our nation's birth."

Pulaski, a Polish military officer who fought on the side of America during the Revolutionary War, died during a battle in Savannah, Georgia, in October of 1779. After coming to America, Pulaski wrote to George Washington, "I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it."

Benjamin Franklin encountered Pulaski while in Paris and recommended that Washington accept Pulaski as a volunteer in the American Calvary. Washington elevated Pulaski to Brigadier General of the American Cavalry on September 15, 1777, just four days after Pulaski saved Washington's life and averted defeat at the Battle of Brandywine. In 1779, he fought the British in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. It was as a result of his actions in Savannah that he died.

Pulaski has been honored throughout the nation's history. In September, 1929, Congress designated October 11 as Pulaski Day to be observed by Presidential Proclamation; it also authorized the Post Office to issue a Pulaski commemorative stamp. In 1973, Illinois designated the first Monday of March as Pulaski Commemorative day in Illinois and in 1986 declared the day to be a state holiday.

Only six people have ever been declared honorary citizens of the United States. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was the first in 1963 and Marquis de la Fayette, a Frenchman who supported the American Revolution, was the last in 2002. The others were Swedish diplomat and Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg in 1981; Pennsylvania co-founder and governor William Callowhill Penn and his wife Hannah, a Pennsylvania administrator, in 1984; and Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, in 1996.

Hello Regina,
Thanks for your inquiry. I didn't mean to mislead anyone by not putting the
date in the info. page but all the pertinent info. is contained in the picture
on the front page of this Group page.

However, I dont't know how you received this information so here it is.

The 70th Anniversary dinner/dance will take place on Saturday, November 7th -
which is this coming up weekend.

If you have a larger party I'd recommend reserving a table by calling
623-487-9821 and leave your name and number and bring as many friends as you
can. We're going to have a big party with lots of special things on the agenda.

See You There
Casimir Kosinski, President

PULASKI FINALLY ON TRACK TO
HONORARY CITIZENSHIP

Washington, D.C. (PMN)—The Pulaski honorary posthumous citizenship bill (HRJ26) passed unanimously, 422-0, in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 8, 2009. It now moves for reconciliation with a Senate bill.

General Kazimierz PulaskiIn an extraordinary move the leadership of the House Judiciary Committee and the Subcommittee all agreed to waive the vote in committee and send it directly to the House floor for a vote under suspension of the House rules. The congressmen were aware that October 11 was recognized by the Congress as Pulaski Day in 1929 and hoped to have the bill passed before then. Many states, though, observe Pulaski Day on the first Monday in March.

However, under congressional rules the House bill and the Senate bill have to be reconciled, even though the verbiage is the same. It was suggested that, if possible, the best alternative date for the President to sign the bill is October 15, the true revised date that is now known as the date on which Pulaski died in Savannah. It would be the 230th anniversary of his death.

The day following the House vote, President Barack Obama declared October 11, 2009, to be General Pulaski Memorial Day. Click Here to read the proclamation in full.

Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) spoke to urge his colleagues to vote in favor of the citizenship bill. His speech on the floor of the House can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTVw5gEuDjs .

Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) have been guiding the bill through the Senate.

KAZIMIERZ PULASKI AND WARKA

The town of Warka is the birthplace of Kazimierz [Casimir] Pulaski. It is organized in his honor as a Museum and Archives dedicated chiefly to the history of American Poles.

There all Pulaski children were born: five daughters and three sons. Kazimierz was the seventh child.

Both the United States and Poland revere the name of Kazimierz Pulaski.

Pulaski is an hero of both nations. He is hero of the American Revolution. And, he is a hero of Poland's struggle against the Russian domination that began in his lifetime and extended its tentacles throughout following decades.

Warka, the birthplace of Kazimierz Pulaski, lies about approximately 38 miles south of Warsaw. Its main attraction is the White Palace of Winiary, designed in the 17th Century by Agostino Locci, chief architect of King Jan III Sobieski, victor of one of the decisive battles in world's history (defeat of the Turks at Vienna, 1683).

The Winiary Palace became property of Jozef Pulaski through his marriage to Marianna Zielinska, heiress of a wealthy family. Pan Jozef, who had extensive land holdings in Podolia, settled in Warka and became, by royal appointment, a Starosta [District Magistrate].

Renovated in 1967, the palace now serves as a Kazimierz Pulaski Museum with a rich collection of mementoes of the great son of Warka. It also includes writings of Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Kosciuszko's aide who lived in America for an extended period and met several times with Washington and Jefferson.

The park surrounding the palace is a nature preserve.

Tadeusz Kosciuszko, then Commander in Chief of Poland's Armed Forces and Chief of State, issued one of his historic proclamations in Warka in 1794. Piotr Wysocki, hero of the November Upraising against Russia was born in Warka. In the Middle Ages, Warka was a residence of Mazovian Dukes of the Piast family. It was granted a city charter in 1321, the same year Warsaw became a town. In the 15th and 16th Centuries, Warka was one of the largest craft trading centers in Poland. Today it is the center of a fruit processing industry, with large vegetable farms and fruit gardens.

The museum also contain portraits and mementoes of Helena Modrzejewska (Modjeska), one of the greatest Polish dramatic actresses, who launched her American career in San Francisco in 1877 and of Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

Unique maps of America are part of this museum collection. There are also London and Paris publications from the first half of the 19th Century.

POLISH AMERICANS CELEBRATE
HERITAGE DURING OCTOBER

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PMN)—Since 1608, when the first Polish settlers arrived at Jamestown, VA, Polish people have been an important part of America's history and culture. In 2009, Polish Americans will mark the 28th Anniversary of t he founding of Polish American Heritage Month, an event which began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,, and became a national celebration of Polish history, culture and pride.

During 2009, Poles will also mark the 230th Anniversary of the death of the Father of the American Cavalry, General Casimir Pulaski, and the 70th Anniversary of the Invasion of Poland and the Outbreak of World War II. For additional information about these historic events and Polish and Polish American history, visit the Museum's Internet site at http://www.PolishAmerican.Center.com .

Information about ways to celebrate Polish American Heritage Month can be obtained by visiting the Polish American Heritage Month Committee's site at http://PolishAmericanHeritageMonth.com . On this site is a list of "Things To Do During Polish American Heritage Month," the 2009 coloring contest artwork for schools and artwork for Heritage Month posters, which can be downloaded and printed. Copies of the coloring contest artwork can also be obtained by calling the Heritage Month Committee, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at (215) 922-1700.

POLKA PATTER

The Entertainment Board of the Twin Cities Polishfest, the first in many years, reports that the 2009 edition was a great hit with over 12,000 attendees. It took place in downtown Minneapolis and had many Polish culture events, as well as polka music, Chopin's music and Polish folk music. The polka bands were DyVersaCo, Doctor Kielbasa, Polish Connection, Twin City Soundz and the Chmielewski Funtime Family Band. Board members from the Milwaukee Polishfest and members from the other local ethnic festivals attended.

Jake Mikrut, the talented 15-year-old polka drummer, was appointed Youth Advisor by the International Polka Association at its annual convention on August 9, 2009. He may be contacted with ideas and comments at youth@... .

Polka fans went on a cruise without leaving the good ole USA. The Stock Pot Restaurant's annual Polka Cruise took place on August 23 aboard the Princess Wenonah departing from downtown Bay City, Michigan. The sailing featured The Steve Drzewicki Band and its special guest, 13-year-old polka fiddling sensation Brien Ahern. He can be seen at YouTube by typing in "Drzewickibandpolka."

Paul Romanowski announced that he was starting a polka show on the Polka Jammer Internet Network in September, 2009. His goal on the show is to promote all bands, festivals and dances, and, of course, to keep polka music alive. He can be contacted at promanowski@... , his personal e-mail address.

Eddie Zavaski, Jr., and Polkaman Jack Baciewski filled in for the Gladysz husband and wife radio team, who were in Poland vacationing, on August 23. It was the first time Zavaski and Baciewski had been together on radio since November, 2002. They planned a show that was be reminiscent of the great polka radio days of legendary DJ Stanley (Stas) Ozimek, playing music of that era, as well as the polka music of today's polka bands. They invited polka fans to the Polish National Home in Hartford, Connecticut, where they could listen to the show live and also have a great Polish meal.

Eric Noltkamper received the top vote with the Just Plain Folks Music Awards based in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 29, 2009. Coming in second to fourth, respectively, were "Bulletproof Polkas" by John Gora & Gorale, "America's Most Requested Polkas" by Jerry Darlak & The Touch and "Batteries Not Included" by Eddie Blazonczyk's Versatones. The website is at http://www.justplainfolks.org .

Mike Surratt of the Continentals says that, because polkasunited.com is doing so well and participation on the moderated newsgroup he started has cooled down, he has shut down the "polkasarecool" newsgroup. He hope those who do not mind contributing thoughts and ideas on a moderated group will sign up at http://www.polkasunited.com . He says there are no spammers, just good discussions about polka music, and it is even has categorized message boards.

The Bell Hops appeared for a reunion at organized by Frank Powaski on August 30, 2009, at the American Legion Post in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. after four decades apart and just two short practices, the boys dusted off the bell hop caps and were ready to play the many songs that made them so popular. The Versa J's were also special guests at the dance.

DJ Seth Drzewicki reports that all the bands were great at the Summer Music Fest in Frankenmuth, Michigan, in August, but Jimmy K & Ethnic Jazz, Pan Franek & the Polka Towners, Polka Family, Jimmy Sturr and DynaBrass did an excellent job proving to the people who just came to see the Hubcaps that polka music is great, fun, happy music.

The 2010 Bay Area Babes Pinup Calendars are out featuring Big Lou, the Accordion Princess, as Miss August. Last year the calendars sold out in two weeks. You can get them while they're hot at http://www.accordionprincess.com/id47.html , but don't expect anything that would appeal to Hugh Hefner.

Big Lou, incidentally, had a gig in Gaborone, Botswana, with the Maru, a Pula school Marimba Band, which joined her for the "Chicken Dance." You can check out the remarkable video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1AoOZpE28I. After the performance, she donated her ancient Hohner accordion to the school, which has a strong music program, but a lot of the students are penniless orphans who attend the school on scholarships. The students have to learn music theory on recorders. It is now her new mission in life to help get instruments to these talented and deserving students. Those who are willing to help with old instruments can contact Lou at xxx99lou@... .

The Bayway Beach Party 2009 was held at the Bayway Polish Home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on August 23. Of course, there's NO BEACH at Bayway, but it was decided several years ago that you don't need sand or water for a beach party. Instead, you just need a summer polka fun time with a great band, good summer drink specials and a Polka Partying crowd. The Polka Country Musicians provided the great music, but the crowd provided their own "beach" fun.

Rick Gazda has produced tribute recordings to IPA Polka Hall of Fame Inductee Bernie Witkowski. The first is called "Rick Gazda: A Trilogy Tribute to Bernie Witkowski – Forget Me Not." The second recording is "Rick Gazda: The Second Trilogy Tribute to Bernie Witkowski - Summer Sessions." The third of this trilogy tribute is expected be released in the not too distant future.

809 AREA CODE----Important

We actually received a call last week from the
809
 area code
. The woman said 'Hey,
this is Karen . Sorry I missed you--get back to us
quickly. I have something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809We didn't respond.

Then this week, we received the following
e-mail:

Do Not
DIAL AREA CODE
809
284 , AND
876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION
PROVIDED TO US BYAT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US ... This is
pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get
you to call.

Be sure you read this and pass it on.

They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.

In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away.. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these
calls.

If you call from the
U.S. , you will apparently be
charged
 $2425 per-minute.

Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.

WHY IT WORKS:

The 809
area code is located in the Dominican Republic .

The charges afterward can become a real
nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved
and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.
