Subject: [Pugh] Link Between the Hampshire and Hancock County, WV Pugh Lines
I have some exciting news to report. Late yesterday we received word
that we now have scientific evidence linking the Hampshire and
Hancock County, WV Pugh lines. The evidence links the Hugh and
Elizabeth (Davis) Pugh line with the Robert and Sarah (Evans) Pugh
line.
I have long suspected a link between these two lines for a number of
reasons. One of the strongest pieces of evidence comes from
correspondence between two genealogists in the 1950's. Leona Pugh
Haeberle (b.c. 1855) who was a great granddaughter of Peter and Sarah
(Todd) Pugh, writes to Mrs. Laura Pugh Kirkbride (b.c 1895) who
descends from David and Mary (Snowden) Pugh:
"Years ago I had several letters from one of (the Hampshire County
Pughs), a Mrs. Jennie Pugh Smith, her fathers name was Thomas and
they had come or their ancestry rather, had come through from the
Cacapon and near Winchester Va. (Hampshire co W Va was made from
part of Frederick co Va)
This lady told me that while she was still home, before her marriage,
she recalled that a couple of old gray haired men from Brook co use
to come visit her father and that they were his cousins. (It was
while she was yet a child I think) They were Jesse Pugh and Robert
Pugh and were cousins to each other."
This particular letter was typed and there were handwritten notations
in the bottom margin: "Thomas Pugh was born in 1827 at Big Run West
Va in below Marietta but the early family had come from Winchester
Va." On the back of the letter there is additional
handwriting: "What puzzles Mrs. Haeberle.Peter Pugh was born in N
Jersey and came to Burgettstown Pa and then Pughtown W Va (now New
Manchester) in 1800. In her family it had been known that three
settled in Va."
A subsequent letter from Mrs. Haeberle states that Jennie Pugh Smith
was born in 1869, last resided in East Canton, OH and "her people
lived in Marietta." The letter also stated that she had a sister
Helen born in 1877 who had not married and that "their father, Thomas
Pugh, was born in 1824 at Big Run W Va."
As the scientific evidence I reference is off-topic on this list,
please feel free to learn more at:

If you run across the name of Joel PEW's father and/or mother mand/or
siblings, please let me know. He was supposedly born in Kentucky
about 1791 or 1796 and moved to Tennessee about 1810. Since I have
never found any trace of a PEW/PUGH family in KY with a child by that
name, I suspect that his family must have been staying in KY for only
a few years before going on to Missouri or IL (but I have not found a
family with a child named Joel in either of those states either).
Good luck on your visit to DC!

a Greer and a Pugh family had intermarried on the NC VA border, and that one

help me put a connection together that would help me with my Aquilla Pugh.
All I know for sure is that Aquilla Pugh was born in NC and moved to KY where
he had at least 2 wives and about 16 children. I only have the names for 7
or the children though: They were Jane, Phoebe, William, Nancy, John, Thomas,

William Hibbs. they were my GGGrandparents. Wish I could help you with your

Every once in a while I feel the need to jump in with my brick wall.
Aquilla Pugh b about 1785 in North Carolina. I have an idea he may be
connected
with the Greers of VA, and that Aquilla could be the son of David Pugh and
Sarah Greer. Also that David may be the son of William Pugh. There were
several
Pughs who married Greers in that neck of the woods. Anyone out there

This is a non Pugh post.
I just wanted to share with you all.
I have also been working on my Father's paternal side of the family.
Within the past few days, I am back to 1571 on the island of Korcula
in Croatia.
We broke through a brick wall that has prevented us from tying in a
very large family in MS/LA. We have been working years on this.
Somehow my 4th Great Grandmother' s maiden name changed here in the
States to her Father's profession.
We finally found paper evidence of her real last name in not one but
two documents with her Dad's profession listed after her real maiden
name.
We are about to share three gedcom files from three large families.
I am so very excited.

He came as an indentured servant to a Mr. Bevan. (Bevan was related
to Joan Price) He settled in Chester County, PA after serving his
time as a servant. He staked claims to a total of 700 acres of land
in the Uwlchan Township of Chester County, Pennsylvania. He built up
quite a fortune, owning a grist mill, a tannery, as well as a large
plantation.
James made his will in 1723, leaving 200 acres of land to each of his
sons, John and Thomas.
James moved from Radnor MM to Chester County and settled in Uwchlan.
He lived for a time at "The Plow" in what is Robeson Township, Berks
County, now, but died at his home on French Creek. His will was
proved Aug. 25, 1724, and recorded at West Chester, Will Book 1, p.
161.
Jeff,
A few more things to ponder. As far as the David and James Pugh being brothers,
the only time I've seen anything connecting the two as brothers is in 'family
stories'. I have seen no documentation that the two are brothers of any kind.
They did not arrive in America at the same time. I will have to pull my notes
out again, but the first ever reference to a David Pugh in PA is made in the
Quaker records, where he is mentioned as a 'widower'. The only true blood
connection I've ever found between these men is through their wives.
Next, on Thomas Pugh of Randolph Co. The identity of his wife is speculative.
Evidence points to Elizabeth Richardson being his wife, but it is not proven.
Yes, he is buried beside Elizabeth Pugh but the only Elizabeth Pugh ever found
in any Quaker or Randolph Co records in NC that can positively be identified is
Elizabeth Pugh Fruit, and an Elizabeth Pugh that appears to be much younger than
the one buried beside Thomas. The cemetery Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in
is the Pugh/Campbell/Fruit family cemetery. Thomas' wife is never mentioned in
any deeds, wills, etc.
I have long speculated that the Thomas who came to Randolph Co, NC and is named
in the Quaker records of Cane Creek is actually the brother of Jesse, John,
James, Enoch, Mary, and Elizabeth, and not their father. This would explain why
the children named in his will do not match these Pugh's that were long thought
to be his children. The Pughs associated with Thomas who left his will in
Randolph Co, appear to be much more in tune with the Quaker religion and are
hard to track in the public records of the area. Unlike the Pughs involved in
the Regulators, who are named over and over in public records.
I can prove my line of Pugh's back to Thomas Pugh who married Eva Barbara Amick
in Randolph Co. Thomas has long been thought to be the son mentioned in older
Thomas' will. It has been speculated that my Thomas was really a grandson of
Thomas, as Thomas would have been very old when my Thomas was born.
So, as far as concrete proof, I cannot say that my line actually comes through
the Thomas who came to Randolph Co and was received on certificate at Cane Creek
MM. Based on that fact, I don't think we can rule out anything except the fact
that David Pugh of PA is not related to my line of Pugh's. He could still very
well be the brother of James Pugh of PA.
Just wanted to clarify that, so we don't repeat the same mistake made
generations ago on all this.

Wish I could be of service, Jeff.
My ongoing search for the back story of my family heirloom "True
Lover's Knot" has been unsuccessful so far as regards descendents of
the pen-artist Hugh PUGH who made it for my ggg grandmother. I would
be thrilled to find male descendants perhaps via his son Samuel, to
whom he addresses his letters of 1803 and 1807 in Radnor, PA
The address refers to Samuel specifically as an Innkeeper.
But the Inn itself is not named.
As you know I'm most interested in Hugh PUGH (b 1747/48-d after 1807)
He was born in Uwchlan, PA and descended from James and Joan.
His fine penmanship appears in the national publication "Real Simple"
magazine -- the June issue on newstands now and at their
realsimple.com website in the Home section.
The story can easily be accessed via my little blog here:

Traditional genealogy tells us that James Pugh (1665-1724) came to
America abt. 1682 with his brother David Pugh (1662-1737). James
married Joan Price in 1692 and David married Joan's sister, Katherine
Price, in 1698. The close association of James and David has been
documented and records are available. I have seen accounts that
James and David's father, Evan Pugh (--?--, 1704) followed his sons
to America in 1698. I do not know what documentation exists for this
statement.
Thomas Pugh, Sr. (1703-1794) of Randolph County, NC has been known as
the youngest son of James and Joan (Price) Pugh for decades (possibly
centuries) in the genealogical community. There is no strong paper
trail evidence that can be found in modern times to prove this
relationship. There is quite a bit of circumstantial evidence but
nothing that provides a solid link from James to Thomas, Sr.
Thomas Pugh, Sr. and Elizabeth Richardson are responsible for a huge
number of living Pughs today as well as many individuals of other
surnames. We are fortunate to have three direct male representatives
of James Pugh in the Pugh Surname DNA Project. Two of the three
descend from different sons of Elijah and Ruth (Julian) Pugh. The
third participant is one of our success stories. He descends from
the Jacob Pugh (1767-1835) who married Dorcas Glasgow and ended up in
Marion County, IN. Some genealogists had surmised that Jacob was the
son of Enoch Pugh and Ester (--?--) and the grandson of Thomas Pugh,
Sr. and Elizabeth Richardson. Other theories also exist for Jacob.
All three of these participants match DNA, basically proving the
genealogy of the three branches back to Thomas Pugh, Sr. We do not
have any representatives of James and Joan (Price) Pugh's other sons
in our Project. Therefore, we cannot establish the connection of
Thomas Pugh, Sr. to James and Joan with DNA, proving traditional
genealogy.
Our two participants who descend from David and Katherine (Price)
Pugh match each other's DNA. They descend from different sons of
Captain Jonathan Pugh (1751-1788) and Elizabeth Rogers. Through
their match, we have proved the traditional genealogy of these two
branches back to Captain Jonathan Pugh. Captain Jonathan was the son
of Joseph Pugh, Esq. (1706-1778) and Mary Metcalf and the grandson of
David and Katherine (Price) Pugh. We do not have representatives of
other branches of this line (other sons or grandsons of David and
Katherine) in our Project. Therefore, we cannot yet establish the
connection of Captain Jonathan to David and Katherine using DNA.
Unfortunately, our three James and Joan (Price) Pugh representatives
do not match DNA with our David and Katherine (Price) Pugh
representatives. In fact, genetic calculations have determined that
the two lineages represented in our Project do not share a common
ancestor within the past 20,000 to 30,000 years. This is long before
the use of surnames.
Our current results tell us that we have some issues with the
traditional genealogy of James, David and Thomas, Sr. It tells us
that either James and David were not really brothers (sons of the
same father) or that the Thomas, Sr. who resided in Randolph County,
NC was not the son of James and Joan. We are in desperate need of
direct male representatives of the other sons of James and Joan
(Price) Pugh and the other sons and/or grandsons of David and
Katherine (Price) Pugh. You can view our results at:

If you know of any Pugh males that can help us resolve this issue
please let them know about what we are trying to accomplish.
Thank you for your interest in Pugh genealogy,

Lynna and all...glad to be part of this group...feels my life long
interest in genealogy. The "homestead" in Wales is great. Thanks to you
and Dad for all the family research.

Edward Pugh is in Lineage IIb2.1 in our Project. So far, we do not have any
connections that provided us with additional clues on who his father might
be.

Of course, Mary, you are in our prayers. Your
grandson's story is very traumatic.

Hi All,
Now that I know that it's a possibility that my Thomas may not be
descended from James M, but rather from Ellis, I am going back over
my records & looking for missed clues.
My Grandmother, Pearl Elizabeth Thompson Pugh of Staunton, VA in
Augusta County was married to Thomas DeWitt Pugh of Randelman, NC.
They met while he was stationed in VA as an Army recruiter.
Pearl had two Aunts who married twin Pugh brothers.
I know nothing about these twins other than their names.
Nancy Thompson born 1847 was married first to a Zebus Finch & then to
Marcellus (Delas) Pugh.
Eliza Catherine Thompson born 1856 was married to John Nelson Pugh.
I don't know when the Pugh twins were born or where.
My Thompson family is from Staunton, VA in Augusta County.
Eliza & Nancy's parents were Elizabeth (Eliza) Davis & Berry Thompson.
Since they were my Grandmother's Aunts, I have done no research on
them.
Thompson is NOT an easy name to research.
But now, I have to wonder if this may be a missed connection that may
help to solve the James M/Ellis problem.
Does anyone on this forum have any information about these twin Pughs?
My thanks,
Jane
