Canyon Middle School is actively seeking partners from our extended community of
small business owners, working professionals and organizations to help design
and implement a dynamic internship program for our 6-7-8 students.

The internship program encourages students to move towards self-efficacy while
exploring careers in real-life working environments. During their internships,
students learn about themselves within the context of a work community and
further their abilities as contributors, observers, questioners and recorders.

The goal of the internship program is to facilitate and nurture each student's
ability to independently develop and pursue a personal areas of interest. Each
student begins by drafting a current and meaningful set of personal goals as it
relates to their internship. They are expected to approach their internship with
both mindfulness and imagination, as it represents a unique opportunity to
leverage newly acquired critical thinking skills, discover new perspectives, and
practice responding with patience to unfamiliar tasks and problems.

This year the program is scheduled to run for eight consecutive Wednesdays from
October 17 through December 5, 2012.

So far, students have expressed their desire to pursue internships related to
Animal Care, the Arts, Baking and Cooking, Books, Bicycling & Skating, Movies,
Technology and Video Gaming.

If you consider to help design and implement this internship program and you or
your employer can sponsor one or more of our students please email me:

Recommendations to keep our group sleek and messages going to the correct people.

If you are POSTING something like a job, that people will reply to

1) Please put your personal email address in the TO; Line
2) Put  Productionallstars@yahoogroups.com  in CC:line (or BCC:)

If you are REPLYING to a post for a job or internship,  do not simply hit "Reply."
If you do, your email will go out to hundreds of people, in addition to your intended recipient.  If you repeatedly send your personal replies to the entire  yahoogroup, I will need to take you off  the group.

Hi Folks,
Here's a link to finding your polling place if you don't yet know where to go.  www.smartvoter.org/ca/alm/

The outcome of Proposition 30 will directly affect funding for classes (not administration)  at community colleges for years to come. You can read more about Prop 30 and other propositions and measures at the link above, which offers non-partisan descriptions.

Not telling anyone how to vote, but I do encourage you to go to the polls and exercise your conscience. And get that sticker!

Dear friends,

Hope you're doing well. We're hosting a screening, in north Oakland, of the new documentary about the life of Anne Braden and her work organizing white communities in the South for racial justice. Once again we've seen a national election where racism is so prominent in how it's used to divide working people. Anne Braden's work is an important example of building the multiracial coalitions needed to bring about a better, healthier, more just and equitable country.

Suggested donations are $5-20 and all proceeds will go to the Anne Braden Anti-Racist Training Program. It would be great to see you there! There's more information about the movie and the program below. Space is limited so please try to arrive early. Check out our Facebook event for more information.

With love and solidarity,
Regan & Dave

WHO IS THE CATALYST PROJECT? (http://collectiveliberation.org/)

Catalyst Project is a center for political education and movement building based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We organize in majority white sectors of social justice movements with the goal of deepening anti-racist commitment in white communities and helping to build multiracial movements for collective liberation. We do this by creating spaces for activists to collectively develop deeper political analysis, vision, strategy and organizing skills. Our work is based in the belief that all people have a right to dignity, housing, food, healthcare, meaningful work and healthy communities. We organize with the understanding that anti-racism can be a catalyst for challenging all forms of oppression and creating fundamental change.

ABOUT THE FILM:

ANNE BRADEN: SOUTHERN PATRIOT

An Appalshop Documentary by Anne Lewis & Mimi Pickering
77 min, 2012 • annebradenfilm.org

from the film's website (http://annebradenfilm.org/about.php): "Anne Braden: Southern Patriot is a first person documentary about the extraordinary life of this American civil rights leader. Braden was hailed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as a white southerner whose rejection of her segregationist upbringing was “eloquent and prophetic.” When charged with sedition for attempting to desegregate a Louisville, Kentucky neighborhood in 1954, Braden used the attack to embark upon a lifetime of racial justice organizing matched by few whites in American history. Ostracized as a “red,” she fought for an inclusive movement community and demonstrated that civil liberties were essential for civil rights. After decades of being shunned by even the most progressive organizations, in 1989 Anne Braden was awarded the first Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty from the American Civil Liberties Union as a “lifelong leader of the movements for racial justice, labor rights, and peace in the South.”

Described as “one of the great figures of our time” by historian Jacquelyn Hall, Braden died in 2006 leaving a remarkable legacy as a grassroots organizer, committed journalist, civil rights leader, movement strategist, social chronicler, public intellectual, teacher and mentor to three generations of social justice activists. In the midst of production at the time, the filmmakers continued with the documentary with other producers graciously contributing additional media.

In the film Braden is articulate, insightful, challenging, self-effacing, and charming. Her reflections on the significance of a lifetime of racial justice organizing are interspersed with commentary from civil rights leaders, organizers, historians, students and friends who intersected with her at key moments in her life. Archival material of the civil rights movement and historical and contemporary footage of Anne participating in the social justice community are juxtaposed with a variety of interviews.

In a time of war, terrorism, economic uncertainty, religious controversies and an African American President, unresolved issues around race and racial justice, civil rights and civil liberties, class and gender equity inform our national debates. Braden engages audiences with a unique southern voice for a much needed discourse on the continuum of struggle for civil rights and civil liberties from the founding of our democracy to the present, and the responsibilities of whites to join the fight against racism and white privilege. Through this exploration of Anne Braden's story we see not only the dangers of racism and political repression but also the power of a woman's life spent in commitment to social justice."

Many thanks to Good Bellies who is opening their cafe for this event. We encourage everyone to support this locally owned business which hosts community events such as this one.

Note: They will be serving drinks and pastries at the event, but the kitchen closes at 5pm.

KENNETH RAININ FOUNDATION RENEWS & EXPANDS SUPPORT

The San Francisco Film Society just announced a significant increase in funding to its Filmmaker360 programs through the renewal and expansion of its collaborative relationship with the Kenneth Rainin Foundation (KRF). Filmmaker360 supports narrative feature filmmakers through cash grants, residencies, script workshops, and more.

Due to the program's demonstrated success since the relationship between the two organizations began, the suite of services funded by KRF -- including the flagship SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grants, which distribute more than $600,000 annually directly to filmmakers -- will continue to grow and develop well beyond the five-year pilot period originally announced in 2009. With more recently-launched initiatives such as the new FilmHouse residency program already showing signs of great potential and sustainability, SFFS and KRF will strengthen their partnership and build new services in the years to come to support independent filmmakers of all stripes.  Read the announcement here

Hi All,

I'm in Rachel Simpson's BCC Digital Video II class ... and have
been offered an exciting opportunity in which I need specialized
assistance.

URGENT -
Need a talented Sound Engineer for Club walkthrough
at 4pm today (to speak with Club's Soundboard guy) ...
and this Saturday night from 5pm-on to shoot the event.

Event:
Bawdy Storytelling's 6th Anniversery
show this Saturday night (2/16).

CLUB:
VERDI CLUB - 2424 Mariposa Street, San Francisco, CA
(verdiclub.net) ... they have pic's on the club site
    re the environment.

Note:
There is only one out/in to the soundboard on site ...
and that's being used for the Storytellers mic.
And, I hear the Chandeliers in the Club
send off some sort of buzz/noise.

More to following once we connect.

Here's a couple links re Bawdy & Saturday's show (2/16):

This Wednesday evening, at 7:00, there will be a screening at the BCC Auditorium of my doc, Citizen Change. Since the production began while I was a BCC video production and editing student, this screening has special importance for me. Everyone is invited, but particularly those who participated in the production but missed the screening at the Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco this past June.

The sponsor of the screening is the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club, presenting the film as a special tribute to Ann Chandler and Ethel Manheimer, two of the interview subjects who died - too young - late last year.

I must give a special shout-out to Hannah Chauvet, who was the faculty sponsor. This screening couldn't have been scheduled without her help in working through the administrative thicket.

The Documentary is 48 minutes in length, and will be followed by a Q&A. I look forward to seeing many of you there. For more info about the film, please visit citizenchange.weebly.com.

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know that I submitted 'joi transformed' and was accepted. The festival is this Saturday night at Las Positas in Livermore. They are a community college like BCC (a bit more horizontal and larger) with the same issues we have as such. While it would be nice to have folks come out for me, I feel it would be nice to come out for all the folks there working as we have. The submissions will likely be interesting films from there and a few other places in the region, and we could all potentially connect with each other as peers. I'll likely be driving a van if anyone would like to travel with me. Otherwise, if you are thinking of coming and would like more information, just drop me a line at dfshultz@... and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!
