Hi Don,
We are dealing with this on the Nashville also.  Alot of it depends on how you
have your trains and staging setup.  At this time, I'm doing some experiments
to get more control of car movements through the main yards.  Once we are back
in operation, I'll be able to post how it works for us.

Best,

Subject: [ProTrak] Yard congestion

I am trying to alleviate my yard congestion. What appears to be
happening is that as cars come into the yard during a session they are
classified and placed on the classification tracks. The problem is that
these cars are not being placed on outgoing trains but set in the yard
until the next update. After the next update I have full trains for the
first run then again as trains return 1 or 2 cars are placed on
outbound trains while the yard again fills up.

In looking at the cars that are hung up through exceptions query car
status the car schedule shows yard yard customer. I happened to notice
that a flier over both waybill and time remaining says to click to
complete loading. I am not sure if this applies at the yard but I tried
it on several cars then did a Yardmaster route cars at yard. a few cars
were routed but most were not.

So my question is am I missing a setting to make cars in a yard
available immediately or is there a problem in my data base or how can
I make all cars coming into a yard immediately available.

Thanks
Don Lyon

John:

Thanks for your 'eagle eye'. You are correct in your observations. I had
caught and corrected Figure 5-24 but had missed the error in Figure 5-25 -
it has now been corrected. If you find any other situations where your
actions don't produce the results in the ProTrak Basics Manual (PTBM),
please let me know. A number of us have looked at those two figures yet
none of us caught the errors. Thanks for brining them to my attention.

FYI, I hope to get Version 1.1 out early in the new year. In addition to
the three new chapters, there are a number of corrections and additions to
the text in the first 10 chapters. The details of the corrections will be
shown in a separate document - V1.1 release notes.

Doug,

Thank you for getting back so fast.

Look forward to hearing from you about my observations

.

I am finding the Manual very easy to use, so far.

The Illustrations (figures) give a great visual reference to check against
for accuracy on my part.
The Appendices I am sure will help greatly when I continue on with the
Manual.

From what I have seen so far, I believe as I proceed with the Chapters, I
will have a knowledge of and understanding of the relationships between
reports.

I appreciate the work you and others have done. As I indicated in my
posting, I have had ProTrak for many years and was never successful in
working though a single operating session. I did have "tons" of the Forum
messages saved but found it difficult to pinpoint anything specific for
help.

I have followed the forum discussions since 2001 and admire Jim for his
response to user requests for both help and additions to the program. I
can't think of another program that offers a similar response.

My wife suffered an acute stroke last March and as her "care taker", I am
home most of the day. This allows me time to again start work on my N scale
layout in the garage and therefore lead to my renewed interest in ProTrak.

Regards,

John Quinn

I'm the author of this manual and I'm pleased to see you are using it. One
of the "Murphy's Laws" type of things is that no matter how often you check
to make sure you don't have any errors in a manual, someone will surely find
one as soon as it's published. Thanks for bringing these to our attention
and I'll look at them and get back to you as soon as I can.

If I may, I'd like your feedback on how you found the manual. Was it easy
to follow? Did you find anything that was confusing? Did you see anything
that you didn't like? A Ny feedback at all would be wonderful.

FYI, I'm currently working on release 1.1. It will continue on with the
expansion of Train 202 and the addition of two new through trains. It will
also start to introduce passenger operations and some of the intricacies and
peculiarities of setting up passenger ops.

Folks,
I have just started to use the ProTrak Manual and am following the
directions for setting up the ProTRAK Demonstrator Railroad.

I have come across some differences between my results and those shown in
the Manual.
Before proceeding further I have listed the differences and seek
clarification.

I purchased my copy of ProTrak sometime in 2000 I believe and have updated
whenever new updates became available.
Currently that is build 274

Page 5-20 - Changing Trains 3 of 3, Figure 5-24 - Terminal Station shown as
ActonVale. Shouldn't that be Berwick? It is what my report shows.
Page 5-21 - Listing of Train Jobs, Figure 5-25 - Line 3, Symbol Number 202
shows Terminal as ACT-yd. Shouldn't that be BER02y? It is what my report
shows.

I have gone back and repeated the steps outlined in the Manual and still get
the same results.

Help will be appreciated.

Thank you
John Quinn

Hi All,
I'm passing this along to you just in case you are interested.  It was posted on
Railroad Line Forums, one of the many groups that I belong to.

"On Monday, Nov 30, at 8:00 PM (eastern), the pilot episode of "Scotty Mason
Live" will be broadcast as a free online feed. The show will also be available
to download for a fee, and purchase for a fee on DVD after Monday night. To view
the live version, go to Scott's website ( scottymason.com), click on the link,
and follow the instructions.

According to Scott, he will be doing "a one-hour clinic on techniques for
finishing scenery. This will include rock coloring, ground applications, trees,
track ballasting, and water considerations."

This will be a professional studio-type broadcast, not a "web-cam 'cast." But,
he also says, "Remember, this will be a live broadcast, and anything can
happen!"

Since quite a few model railroaders have Scott's DVD's on weathering, building,
figure painting, etc. and/or listen to the podcasts every month, I thought some
of you might also be interested in knowing about this new online venture. As far
as I know, nothing like this has been done before in the model railroad hobby."

An interesting site. In Chapter 12 of the PTBM I added an offline supplier
for anhydrous ammonia. Just out of curiosity I looked at the ammonia
listing and low and behold, there's the supplier I used in the PTBM. I'm
struggling with Chapter 12 - I've rewritten parts of the chapter 3 or 4
times and still can't get it right. Maybe I've finally got it this time.

This has been a crazy year weather-wise. So far we've had 2 weeks of winter
in September then fall for the last part of Sep and first part of Nov. New
week we're back into spring with temps of +12 on Monday and +13 on Tuesday.
Go figure.

Shirley had been planning on retiring at the end of June next year but
they've come out with a buyout package where she works and it means that she
can go at the end of March and have effectively the same amount of income as
she would have if she retired at the end of June. Kind of nice to get that
rather than being too early or too late for these sorts of thisng as is so
often the case.

Hi Andy,

Advances on your railroad sound great and I can't wait to operate there again.
I've been very busy at the club preparing for our upcoming show in addition to
construction on the new addition. We are all weathered in and working on the
inside plumbing right now. With the exterior work done we can take our time on
the inside. All the heating runs and air returns are in place, building
electrical is about complete and the plumbing is about 80%. These past few
months have been a blur.

   Hi All,
   Thought I'ld give you a quick update on the Nashville. Been busy working to
get the mainline completed. I'm just laying in the last couple of feet of track
on the city viaduct that is located on the second deck on the backside of the
Madison Switching peninsula and where the track goes into the furnace room and
then comes out on the upper deck. We will have an approximate 1000' mainline in
operations this year.

   We have the fastclock system ready to go but not yet installed and I hope to
have the phone system up and running for the ProTrak Weekend.

   There is quite a bit more customer activity on the layout mainly effecting
Ribo Yard and Cedar Hill Yard operations.

   Cedar Hill has gone from a station with a passing track and a gravel pit
operation, to a fairly busy yard with three trains originating there and a lot
of new customers.

   If you remember Lawson Springs (the end of the double track mainline coming
out of staging), it was a bit of a bottle neck in regards to dispatcher control
and was a real headache for the DS. The double track now runs all the way to
Guthrie Junction were the L&N Interchange is located.

   We are working on the program data to update the latest changes and will
hopefully be operating shortly after the first of the year. I have several
different groups that want to come for a visit and attend an operating session,
two from out of state!! Gotta make sure that I'm ready this time!! ;-)

   Hope you're all considering attending the upcoming PT Weekend the end of
April.

Thanks Jim

That seems to have fixed the problem. The error in car data is not there
anymore. Boy is that a relief!!! I did see the file processor run the first time
I entered operations, so I immediately exited the operations session and
restarted PT, went directly to operations, and this time the fp did not run,
printed several sw lists, and they looked good. Don't want to see that again. I
know it is halloween, but I don't like scary things like that.

Let me get my wits about me again, and see if I can get back to that routing
problem Howard and I seemed to have found.

Again thanks

Because it has no meaning.

~~~
The program -presently- has no general "light engine move" function.  I can
see the utility of adding such a function.  This would be different from the
"light helper return" function.
~~~
In the mean time you can duplicate a "light engine move" by doing what I
mentioned earlier;
   a) use the "call extra" option, _or_
   b) set up a train that originates at a unique location.

You wanted to schedule, permanently, a train to do light power moves. To do
this:
    a)  identify the zone where light engine moves would commonly originate;
    b) set up a "y" track at that zone;
    c) have _no_ other trains work at that location. (Just light power moves
*originate*.)
Then
    d) set up a train that originates at that location. The "number of cars"
setting for a train does not matter.

***Note:
   - If there are no cars at that location, no cars will be assigned to the
train.
   - If only light moves originate at that location, no cars can be routed to
that location (there is no train inbound to the location). There will never
be cars at that location.

Hi,
I was able to setup an RDC train, but PT required that it have at least one car.

However, I was able to reduce the train length to 25 feet, so that should stop
any cars being added inadvertently to the consist.

The error is related to a missing font size (at least here it is). The
program uses "12" as the default size and once that is put (back) in the
data, the error goes away.

Exit ProTrak, then re-enter ProTrak. Go to directly "Operations".

First, try re-setting the switchlist prnting options at
"Adminstration/Switchlist format". That is the item "common" to all car
data.

By the way, that data is stored in the files "SwitPrts.RDC" and
"EnSwPrts.RDC".

~~~
I will have a look at your data to find the exact issue.
Hey Andy
I haven't tried that, though it looks like it would work. But like I said, to
run a caboose hop, or even a 4 car train, PT won't let you do it. You shouldn't
have to trick PT into doing a simple caboose hop. Besides, if we needed to just
transfer motive power from one Yd to another, we would have to set up a Y yard
for each Yd. Just don't seem right to have to do that, besides if you read my
last post, I have bigger fish to kill right now, and even after we got it
working, it would not keep PT from routing cars to the NC-Yd.
Thanks anyway Andy
separated from other freightcar traffic and it has worked well.  Your train
would still terminate at FTW-Yd.
Hi Joe,
Greetings from Atlanta, GA!!
I might be missing something here but have you tried originating the light
caboose hop at FTW but using a small "y" designation that is only used for that
train and no other cars being able to be routed to it?  It is still part of FTW
yard.  This is what I use for my coal train operations thru Ribo to keep them
Have the train run FTW02y  to  NCT-Yd  to  FTW-Yd.  Hopefully that will take
care of cars being added to the train at the origin station.
