Jose: I have successfully loaded preflight on my XP Compaq and enjoyed using it. Have just tried using the keyboard, since I haven't purchased a radio, yet. I am building a Goldberg Gentle Lady as my first plane (in 26 years). I have been working with the included glider, but it has ailerons, is there a model of a polyhedral rudder only glider around? Which planes are in the "models" file besides the T33?

Hello,
I have started to use Preflight on a Compaq Presario 5900T
with W98SE.
Looks very nice !
I plan to use it to simulate kind of an autopilot.
See
http://hem2.passagen.se/skj/engelska/utv.htm
One question:
I have 2 joystick each with 2 axes and 2 buttons.
They both work when tested under W98SE.
However Preflight seems to recognize only one joystick.
Should it be possible to use 2 joysticks?
Thanks

Jose: I have successfully loaded preflight on my XP Compaq and
enjoyed using it. Have just tried using the keyboard, since I
haven't purchased a radio, yet. I am building a Goldberg Gentle

Mike
Marco,
First, about the handling of the models. I just realized
that I did not include any drag due to the fuselage (and other
bits) of all the models I made! I deleted them long ago
in an attempt to make the simulation faster. This is not
necessary now as the program has been optimized to go much
faster than before but now they all have too little drag and
so they behave like they can glide without power for longer than
real models.
I'm attending to the matter and will come up with corrected model
files (.3dm) soon as I test them.
If you need help with your models just send them to me and I will
attempt to fix them.
PRE-Flight is still evolving - my next big version update will
include multi-player capabilities(and other stuff).
Also, new and powerful utilities will be out for beta-testing
soon so be on the mailing list if you want to see the latest stuff.
At the moment, if any sites have models for PRE-Flight, please
tell them to email me so I can link to them!

I believe the black screen may be caused by a setting of
24 bits in the display settings. I was told by a guru
that this may cause the problem on some PC's - Try this
first before buying anything - set it to 16 (best) or 32
bits color.
The 2D patch would be way too slow - see REALIZE - this
is currently a non-DirectX application (to be upgraded).
But hey, 3D cards are dirt cheap nowadays!

Hi Jose,
Thank You very much, I was very near to the solution, but with your
help all was easier!
I tested my plane with the new airfoil, but now... simply seems to be
not efficient!
Perhaps was too late and , even if I used copy&paste, I made some
errors copying the Cl and Cd tables.
I will check in the next days. Perhaps I will automatize the transfer
of the Cl and Cd table to minimize the possibilities of errors.
When my plane will be finished (if I'll be succesful) I will send to
you and if you will find it interesting you will be free to
distribute it with Pre-flight.
I was forced to delay (for the moment) my idea to convert my TT
Raptor 30 due to the more difficulties (for example software radio
mix) of an heli.
So my model (builded from scratch) is freely inspired (as aerodynamic
and aspect) to the Tracer 40 aerobatic.
At the moment I'm working on the 3D model (texturing) and then I have
to finish the airfoil part.
Finally I want to add some features (like software mixing Radio for
people that uses, like me, devices like the dummy Realflight Futaba).
All if I will find other free time in the next days!
About a question I made in a previous post, now I'm able to use my
Realflight Futaba switchs into Preflight, even if you program doesn't
support the joy buttons.
I downloaded the RbJoy utility from www.rbsoft.de.
This utility allow you to assign to your joy buttons a keystroke that
can be intercepted from Pre-Flight.
It's no elegant, but works fine!
Now I can retract my landing gears just like a real RC-model with the
right switch of my dummy joy radio.
At the end 3 questions:
1) in some RCsim forum I read about you program people saying that
the "handling" of the models is not very real, no stall, like flying
on the moon or mars!
What is your point of view?
I think it's only a problem to correctely define the aerodynamic part
of a model, not a problem of the physical engine you implemented.
2) are you still developing new versions of Pre-flight (when
available)?
3) is there some other site, except the official, where I can
download new scenery and plane-Heli
Thank
Marco

everet, i have the black screen figured out (i think)
direct x doesn't render 3d on my machine, in the direct x troubleshooter i get
a fault under the display tab, on "test direct 3d" one of my computer geek
friends tells me it is because my computer doesn't have a video card, and my
video on the motherboard doesn't support 3d. since pre flight is written for

so a new video card is in the works for me. until then, Jose how about a 2d

I strongly advise to download your own copy of this great
JAVA program to run it locally - anyway to start you off (for
your NACA 0013 problem):
1)Select "NACA 4-digit modified" under "Create a NACA airfoil".
2)Enter "13" for thickness
3)Press "Creat NACA airfoil" - this creates your cross section.
You can fiddle with the other parameters when you are confident.
4)Select Polar tab.
5)Enter your Reynolds number (say 200000).
6)Press "Analyze it". Select the 200000 tab. You now see the CL/CD
coefficients you need for the angle of attack in the table.
7)Copy these to your .3dm file - make sure you follow the angles
in the table - you may need to do step 6 a few times to get all
the angles required (between -90 and +90 degrees).
I hope this helps... I am very interested in your model when you
have finished it!

Sorry,
perhaps I'm a little bit long to understand the aerodynamical topics.
You have already sent me some links, but I cannot find useful data
for me (or perhaps I found, but I don't know how to extract for my
use)
I've builded a model with retracting landing gears, moving parts
(aileron, rudder,...) that can run out of fuel but....
I'm still in big difficulties for the aerodynamica part.
The question: where can I find the CL and CD table (for different

Sorry for my question, but I'm very excited to finish the model I
builded!

I will find out if I get the error, but thought I would ask. Do you
have any experience on how it runs with XP?

I go to the post office and ask them
for their (very accurate) scales (within 1 gram).
I tell them I'm planning to post it!
My friend goes to a supermarket and asks the
use of their scales (he has to make sure the
stuff he's measuring is very clean.
Just measure empty (less trouble) then add
fuel weight (about 1KG per liter).

Marco,
I'm working on the documentation!
In the meantime, here are the links that can help you
in programming airfoil characteristics on your heli/plane:
http://beadec1.ea.bs.dlr.de/Airfoils/calcfoil.htm
or
http://members.tripod.de/MartinHepperle/Airfoils/calcfoil.htm
or
http://members.tripod.de/MartinHepperle/Airfoils/
The Reynolds Number must be accurate!
RN=(Speed)(wing dimension along wind direction)/1.3564E-05
In above equation, use the model "cruising" speed.
Coordinates of airfoils can be obtained by hand or see:
http://amber.aae.uiuc.edu/~m-selig/ads/coord_database.html#A
I hope this helps!

Hi all,
I have downloaded just yesterday this simulation and I find it superb.
The possibility of configure all, graphics, physics etc.. is simply
amazing!
After a night I have realized some test models with moving parts etc..
But, due to the missing documentation, for me is a little bit
difficult to fully understand how to customize the physics of this
simulation.
Please I need a description of the parameter used, because I'm trying
to build some heli model.
Where can I find description of the formulas to be used?
And how I have to program the airfoil characteristics (have you some
sites where I can find this datas to suggest me?)
At the moment I have a problem with the equations of the Gyros and
airfoils.
Is there the possibility to use the joystick button (or transmitter
switch) in the simulation?
Please can you say where I can find a more detailed documentations
for all the customizable aspect of this gerat simulation???
Thank you, Jose you have done a superb job!!!

Sandy,
Hi! I'm Jose Pena from Melbourne, Australia. I wrote PRE-Flight for
the purpose of providing the best RC simulation as well as for
designing RC (and full-sized) aircraft. The best way to find out
about PRE-Flight is by downloading it and trying it out!
Regards,
Jose
Greetings!
PRE-Flight version 1.8 is now available. It's now DirectX ver 8
based - so the great graphics just got even better!
PRE-Flight is the best free PC-based tool available for learning how
to fly RC.
Features include:Enhanced DirectX ver 8.0 graphics and controller
support. New models. More control on graphics and physics to support
lower-end computers. Control Panel and Flying Hints screens.
Miscellaneous new features.
Supports: keyboard, up to 8 axis joystick, and/or up to 16 channel
transmitter (using PRE-Flight interface).
Minimum PC requirements: Pentium 200 MMX with at least16MB main
memory, 30MB disk, 3D-capable video card with at least 8MB, Windows
95/ 98/ ME/ 2000/ XP, DirectX ver 8.0 or higher.
Regards,
Jose
Since no one has started things off, I'll say hello. I'd like to
know more about the simulation as I have two sons who are wanting to
learn how to fly RC. This could be a great way to help them learn
and save some airplanes in the process. Any information would be
appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
H. W. "Sandy" McCullough
