All,

I have the Medlin rocket handout I used when we had the build at my place if
anyone wants it.

Now that I trudge back through the posts from after the April shoot, it appears
that October 6th was put in as a tentative, and many (most importantly Tom)
agreed that this would work for him.

Let's make it official!

Yes, we should make it a business meeting as well. I will prepare and agenda.
Please email me directly if you have any items that should be put on for
discussion.

If Andy and Tyler are coming, they have now produced several successful lampare shells.  Or at least successful in the sense that they didn’t blow up the guns.  I think they are still looking for more or brighter fire though.  That might be fun and educational.

I would love to have a discussion about round shell pasting.  Mine are always so lumpy.

Jared,

You may want to look through the bulletins about Jim Widmann's pole method
of pasting (transcribed from Shimizu) described in Bulletin #123,
March/April 2001., or alternatively, at Ned Gorski's nice shells in 2 and a
half
days.https://www.skylighter.com/fireworks/how-to-make/tiger-willow-ball-shells-2\
.asp
The solution to lumpy shells is three parts, partly width of the pasting
paper relative to shell size, size of the open pole, and the changing
orientation used when pasting the shell. The WASP system uses the open pole
method as well as automatically rotates the shell while pasting. Otherwise,
you get eggs instead of balls.

Thanks, Tom. That looks like a great resource. Looks like I need to change my technique a bit, and do some practicing.
I bought a case of 5" hemis at the convention. I've only ever done 3" shells, but can't wait to try the bigger size.

I took Ned Gorski's charcoal cooking class at the convention this year.  The method he demonstrated was for small batches, cooked in a 1 gallon paint can, using the wood to cook itself rather than any external heat source.  I made my own setup at home, and so far it's working fairly well.
If anyone is interested, I can bring the stuff and do a quick demo during our October 6 get-together.  It only takes about half an hour.  Let me know.

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all of the help from several guys here, Robyne and I were able to make and fire our first couple 1lb BP rockets all by ourselves (no adult supervision!)
The first rocket was pounded out by Robyne and the kids, and the second by myself.  Both flew great!  We just had motors on sticks for these first couple (no headers) and they flew very fast.  Here's the recipe I used:
60% KNO3, ball milled separately for about 4 hours by itself
20% home-made airfloat, made from red cedar pet bedding, ball milled with sulfur for about 4 hours
10% sulfur
10% 80 mesh charcoal (no idea what kind of wood - it's something I bought from the supply tent in LaPorte.)

As indicated, I milled the KNO3 separately, then milled the airfloat and sulfur together.  All of this was screened together with the 80 mesh, then pounded into the rocket casing.  The only drawback - VERY messy.  Dust everywhere - we looked like coal miners by the time we were done.  It's a good thing we pounded these outside.  I'm going to try making grains next time by wetting and screening.  I wonder if that will affect the performance...?
I'll post any updates as they come.

Thanks again!

They are extending an invitation to all the local clubs (Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, maybe others) to attend.  This will be a public show, as it coincides with races that evening.  It is intended to be all member-built items shot singly so that each item can be appreciated.  Details of this will be posted at http://northernlighters.org/lakeshoot when they become available.  Contact email is lakeshoot2013@....

I got enough rain (and just a very light dusting of snow) so the weekend is
available. No real plans of classes but I am working on components for New
Years and next year's show for the 4th. Spolettes, stars, case rolling etc. My
30th wedding anniversary is next year so I am building about 70 shells for a
pyromusical.
