New Year's Blues Ball 2010
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188616198766
http://bluesassociationofaustin.com/bluesball/

It is just three weeks until we celebrate our way into 2010 with Leeann
Atherton and The Little Elmore Reed Blues Band. We thought those of you that
are not familiar with the Federation of Women’s Clubs (also known as ‘The
Mansion’) might like to know a little more about where we will be ringing in
the new year. We will have a great dance area for those of you wanting to
dance the night away, so we also thought that those of you that are a bit
rusty on your dancing might like to know about some dance classes we are
putting on this weekend.

*Blues Association of Austin presents - Holiday Blues Weekend*
Friday December 11 - Sunday December 13
http://www.campbellandchris.com/workshops_dec.html

The holidays are a perfect time of year to treat yourself to something
special, and we've got a special blues weekend planned for you! We're
bringing in Tim O'Neill, a gem in the national blues scene, to share his
great instruction and dancing. Classes will also be taught by Campbell,
Chris, and Mallory from Austin.

In addition to the workshop, we have 3 nights of dancing!
~Kick Butt Blues on Friday with live music by Greg Izor & the Boxkickers
~~Special Saturday dance at Galaxy Dance Studios with DJs Chris and Thain
~~~Our new monthly Sunday Blues Groove dance at Kick Butt Coffee in the
Triangle
*The Federation of Women’s Clubs (The Mansion)*
You can view some pictures of this beautiful building at
http://dj-stpatrick.com/themansion/
The Mansion is a Texas Historic Landmark, an Austin Historic Landmark and is
listed with the National Register of Historic places. It was designed by
noted Dallas architect Henry Coke Knight to be the state headquarters for
the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and is considered to be one of the
best examples of Georgian Revival architecture in Texas. It was completed in
1931 with assistance from noted philanthropist, Clara Driscoll, whose Austin
residence was Laguna Gloria, current home of the Austin Museum of Art.
The Grand Ballroom, the largest of its kind in central Texas. The polished
oak floor spans over four thousand square feet (two average houses could fit
inside!) and the ceiling soars to thirty feet. The room is dramatically
illuminated with vintage bronze and crystal wall sconces, for a total of
seventy candlelight bulbs and a thousand sparkling crystal drops!
The Formal Dining Room features dramatic classical columns and expansive bay
windows. Victorian couches and period tables and chairs furnish this lovely
space.
The Victorian Parlor features a fireplace and antique furniture. Chairs and
sofas are clustered for relaxed and easy conversation.
The Library features a collection of Texana, including books by and about
notable women. It is a comfortable retreat with antique sofas and armchairs.
In the nineteen-thirties and forties, the Georgian Room was an operating tea
room. The original hat-check stand is there, along with hardwood flooring
and wall sconces. It is basically a ballroom in miniature, with tall,
elegant windows and a vaulted ceiling.
Be sure to buy tickets online at
http://bluesassociationofaustin.com/bluesball, at Kick Butt Coffee at 5775
Airport Blvd., at any BAA event, or from the Little Elmore Reed Band. All
tickets are cash or check only except online. Make checks payable to ‘The
Blues Association of Austin’.
Hey,
My partner and I will be in Houston between Christmas and New Years.   But we'd
like to go to the Austin Blues New Years Ball on the 31st and then leave on a
train directly from there.  Anyone going from Houston and have room in the car
to there for two people?
And if you felt especially ambitious, let me know about fun Lindy or Blues
events in Houston between Christmas and New Years.
Thanks so much! See you on the dance floor!
It is a little over three weeks away from the New Year’s Blues. Interest is
growing, tickets are selling, and the final touches are being put on the
planning. I have recently talked with folks from Houston, Dallas, and San
Antonio planning on coming to Austin for the dance. Don’t forget, we also
have a Blues dance Friday night and we are looking at putting something
together for Saturday night so we can have three nights of amazing blues
dancing to welcome in the New Year.
For those of you traveling into Austin, there are lots of people willing to
put you up on couches, floors, and air mattresses. Reach out and I am sure
there will be people willing to help you out. Also feel free to contact me
directly if you need suggestions for people to contact.
You can find out more about the event at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188616198766
and at
http://www.bluesassociationofaustin.com/bluesball
You can buy tickets online or at several places around Austin; Kick Butt
Blues at 5775 Airport, from the Little Elmore Reed Blues Band, at BAA
events, and we will have tickets available at some Leeann Atherton Shows.
You can also buy tickets at the door (if we do not sell out) but they will
be more expensive than buying them now.
We look forward to seeing you on New Years.
it a class with a teacher up front all the time... it's a "guided practice
see how we can help one-on-one; and each night we'll have a few things to share
with the whole group and you'll be encouraged to share as well.
While still essentially Swing, this Part II class takes our connection and
explores how we can use it to move and dance to a vast variety of music!
JAM INTENSIVE CLASS - BY LEDFOOT
with Ryan & Julie
Tuesday & Thursday . December 8th & 10th
7:00 - 9:00pm
at Discover Gymnastics
Jam with us!  Learn cool skills and build your comfort level in the jam circle.
What is a jam circle?  Traditionally, an energetic song might encourage dancers
to show off their best moves.  The crowd around the show-offs opens into a
circle.  After each couple completes a phrase or two, a different set of
show-offs may jump into the circle.  You too can jump into the circle... but,
you had better be ready to entertain the crowd!
We'll demonstrate a series of moves lasting one phrase (only eight 8-counts),
repeat them slowly together, and build speed.  When you're comfortable, the
class will partner up and take turns showing off at a moderate tempo.  We'll
progressively increase the tempo until your feet catch fire.  Then we'll do it
again with another series of moves.
Bring your ideas!  Creativity is encouraged.  There's no need to do it like us.
You and your partner may want to revise the jam routine as the music commands.
Both nights are included in the price.  You may attend one night or both for the
same low price.  The curriculum for each evening will be independent of the
other.
Discover Gymnastics (http://www.discovergymnastics.com) is at 747 N. Shepherd
Dr. Houston, TX.  Head north on Shepherd off I-10.  Go over a very large
overpass and turn left into the very first driveway at the bottom. It's the
green and white business center (Corporate Center Shepherd).
$10 in advance
$15 at the door
We want the kids to dance!  $5 for kids age 19 and under
No partner is necessary - We want everyone to be able to attend!
Some one just mentioned that the web site for King's Dancing Centre is not
updated for the new address.
So the new location is a the brick building just west of and next door to the
old Baskin Robbins ice cream joint on Bellaire Blvd  (5412 Bellaire Blvd)
It is the second floor.
See everyone this weekend.  Enjoy our snow day today!
The Hepcats will perform at Lights in the Heights again this year.  Please come
out to support HSDS.  We'll play social dance music between performances.
The Heights neighborhood hosts the best Christmas event in Houston every year.
Thousands of families walk around the neighborhood to watch shows at the local
homes and to check out the decorations.  Some homes host bands; some host
dancers; most have parties; almost all of them decorate like crazy.
Hey everyone,
Christabel & The Jons will be playing at Mucky Duck tonight at 7p cover is $15.
They are a swing band from Memphis, TN.  They've also been featured in movies
soundtracks.  The bad part is that Mucky Duck doesn't really have room for
dancing, but they are a great band.
If you're coming let me know, I'll save a bigger table.
Post-Turkey Toy Drive & Free Dance/Lesson - BY HSDS
Sunday . November 29th
7:00 - 10:00pm
at Melody Club
Work off your extra Turkey-Day calories with us on Sunday at the Melody Club,
November 29th with a FREE beginner's lesson at 7pm and a FREE dance 8-10pm!
This Sunday we'll be celebrating the season with a Toy Drive to sponsor the kids
at HealthBridge Children's Hospital. HealthBridge cares for children from ages 0
– 21. Many of these patients have a 1 to 2 month stay (sometimes in isolation)
and get bored very easily, especially the teenagers. The Child Life Department
works to provide the children games, book, movies & etc. to keep them occupied
during their stay. Unfortunately they only have so many movies and so many books
and so many video games to go around.
Below is a list of items needed by the department to help bring a bit of fun to
the kids:
    * DVDs (they are ok with getting duplicate movies)
    * Books (mainly young adult; ex. Twilight, Harry Potter, etc.)
    * Arts and Crafts Supplies (specifically for individuals to use in theirs
rooms)
    * Games (ex. Monopoly, Sorry, any Jr. games are great)
    * Video Games (Wii, gamecube, Xbox, PS2; they should be E for everyone)
    * Puzzles ( keep it to 24 piece or 36 piece puzzles)
    * Infant toys and mirrors
    * Fisher price/Tonka
    * Dolls and doll clothes
    * Monetary donations will be accepted, please make checks to HSDS.
Essential Swing Dance Classes
  part II . Essentially Swing: 8:30 - 9:45pm Mondays
~ A GUIDED SWING PRACTICA . building our swing from the source ~
Now that we're dancing our swing with connection and energy/frame, flow &
counterbalance
  -- there is so much more Jitterbug & Lindy that we can do as we explore, add,
embellish and create!!
Part II, the guided swing práctica, is a flat $10 (or less) per evening and is a
WALK-IN class so you can come anytime!!
See http://secondcupswing.com/the_lessons.html for discounts (for ScS, HSDS &
RSDS Swing) and details!
excerpt from our "The Second Class" description:
Borrowing the idea of a "práctica" from Tango -- it's not just a dance, nor is
it a class with a teacher up front all the time... it's a "guided practice
dance". There will be a lot of music playing and dancing; We'll come around to
see how we can help one-on-one; and each night we'll have a few things to share
with the whole group and you'll be encouraged to share as well.
While still essentially Swing, this Part II class takes our connection and
explores how we can use it to move and dance to a vast variety of music!
JAM INTENSIVE CLASS - BY LEDFOOT
with Ryan & Julie
Tuesday & Thursday . December 8th & 10th
7:00 - 9:00pm
at Discover Gymnastics
Jam with us!  Learn cool skills and build your comfort level in the jam circle.
What is a jam circle?  Traditionally, an energetic song might encourage dancers
to show off their best moves.  The crowd around the show-offs opens into a
circle.  After each couple completes a phrase or two, a different set of
show-offs may jump into the circle.  You too can jump into the circle... but,
you had better be ready to entertain the crowd!
We'll demonstrate a series of moves lasting one phrase (only eight 8-counts),
repeat them slowly together, and build speed.  When you're comfortable, the
class will partner up and take turns showing off at a moderate tempo.  We'll
progressively increase the tempo until your feet catch fire.  Then we'll do it
again with another series of moves.
Bring your ideas!  Creativity is encouraged.  There's no need to do it like us.
You and your partner may want to revise the jam routine as the music commands.
Both nights are included in the price.  You may attend one night or both for the
same low price.  The curriculum for each evening will be independent of the
other.
Discover Gymnastics (http://www.discovergymnastics.com) is at 747 N. Shepherd
Dr. Houston, TX.  Head north on Shepherd off I-10.  Go over a very large
overpass and turn left into the very first driveway at the bottom. It's the
Work off your extra Turkey-Day calories with us on Sunday at the Melody Club,
November 29th with a FREE beginner's lesson at 7pm and a FREE dance 8-10pm!
This Sunday we'll be celebrating the season with a Toy Drive to sponsor the kids
at HealthBridge Children's Hospital. HealthBridge cares for children from ages 0
– 21. Many of these patients have a 1 to 2 month stay (sometimes in isolation)
and get bored very easily, especially the teenagers. The Child Life Department
works to provide the children games, book, movies & etc. to keep them occupied
during their stay. Unfortunately they only have so many movies and so many books
and so many video games to go around.
Below is a list of items needed by the department to help bring a bit of fun to
the kids:
     * DVDs (they are ok with getting duplicate movies)
     * Books (mainly young adult; ex. Twilight, Harry Potter, etc.)
     * Arts and Crafts Supplies (specifically for individuals to use in theirs
rooms)
     * Games (ex. Monopoly, Sorry, any Jr. games are great)
     * Video Games (Wii, gamecube, Xbox, PS2; they should be E for everyone)
     * Puzzles ( keep it to 24 piece or 36 piece puzzles)
     * Infant toys and mirrors
     * Fisher price/Tonka
     * Dolls and doll clothes
     * Monetary donations will be accepted, please make checks to HSDS.
The Fun Style Swing dance competition has 10 West Coast Swing CONTESTANT ENTRIES
from Alamo West Coast Swing Club and One Balboa entry from Austin.
www.sacrazycats.com
I am challenging all the lindy, shag, swing and balboa dancers of San Antonio
and Austin to match these 10 Contestant Entries from Alamo West Coast Swing
dance club, a brand new club.  All the members entered the competition last
night!  Secondly, and even more important, I challenge you all to have friends
and family attend to match the 23 GENERAL ENTRIES the Alamo West Coast Swing
Club  purchased. Help meet this challenge before the deadline of November 28.
If you are sending a check, just notify me of you competition or general entry
so I can count it. The "Dance for The Kids" fundraiser may be canceled if we are
not able to sell 100 tickets by the 28th.   Unfortunately, this means the dance
community won't be able to help the children of ChildSafe by raising needed
funds as we had hoped. So please show your support by purchasing your ticket
online or thru the mail this week. www.sacrazycats.com
Thirsty Horse Saloon is able to accommodate up to 700 people, so let's pack the
house of this generous facility who is opening their doors for our Swing Dance
for the Kids as they are opening their doors on a closed business day.
Come dance and come show your support. The proceeds from this event benefit
ChildSafe and the sexually abused children of Bexar County. Remember, ChildSafe
helps over 1,700 kids annually…that is more than 6 children per work day.
During a time of year when we are all expressing our thanks for all of the
friends, family and blessings we have; please take a moment to think about those
kids who are spending this Holiday Season trying to cope and heal from the most
devastating experience of their lifetimes.  During a time when these kids should
be enjoying their childhood, they are trying to figure out how to reclaim it.
Together, we can help restore the dignity, trust and hope in children
traumatized by sexual abuse by dancing in support of ChildSafe on December 6th.
Thank you in advance for your support.
HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING
PS: In case of cancellation all moneys will be refunded.
       Thank you for forwarding to dancer, friends, family, co-workers.
