Welcome to the Portland Compact!
The Compact is a group of individuals who have come together with a common goal - to reduce rampant consumerism by opposing disposable consumer culture by bartering, borrowing and buying used. As a community, we can share ideas and help each other out on this mission.
In other words, this discussion group was created to help foster & support our efforts to:
COUNTERACT the negative global environmental & socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture
REDUCE clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er)
SIMPLIFY our lives (as in Calm-pact)
The COMPACT PLEDGE is an agreement to not buy anything NEW for one year.
Exceptions are made for toiletries, food, undergarments, medical supplies and safety equipment. This pledge should be customized according your needs. We encourage you to be honest with yourself & make this your own personal challenge with attainable goals. You choose how extreme to take it.
