Who am I?
How do I find true happiness and fulfillment?

These
are the fundamental questions in each of our lives. It quickly becomes
clear, however, that the best the world can offer are counterfeits that
wound us, betray us, and leave us wanting. Our longings for love,
intimacy, and freedom are good, but the sexual revolution sold us a
bill of goods that simply cannot satisfy.

But there is real hope, and it comes in the form of John Paul II’s Theology of
the Body.

In Freedom,
you will meet people who, through the Theology of the Body, have
discovered the meaning of their very existence. They have all realized
that the message of the Theology of the Body is the key to
understanding their purpose in this life. They have found what we’re
all looking for—the authentic path to happiness and freedom.

Through twelve real-life stories, you will:

See how the Theology of the Body gives you a “new lens” through which
to20see the world with great clarity.

Learn how this teaching is uniquely capable of healing past spiritual and
psychological wounds.

Discover how the journey to sexual integration, although challenging, will
actually liberate all aspects of our lives.

Learn the extraordinary connections between human sexuality and the entire
Catholic sacramental order.

See why persisting in sin ultimately leads to misery.

Understand why “love” is the greatest of the three theological virtues.

Marvel at God’s powerful and healing grace in the lives of ordinary people.

See that God’s grace can prevail over any challenge in life.

Our
world is yearning for the truth and beauty of the Theology of the Body.
The good news is that a new sexual revolution is beginning to take root
in the lives of men and women across the globe. Witness firsthand the
power of this life-giving message, and discover how you, too, can
achieve true freedom.

Title: The Love That Satisfies
Author: Christopher West, http://www.christopherwest.com/
Publisher: Ascension Press, http://www.ascensionpress.com/
Date Published: July 2007

Product Description
Building
on the legacy of Pope John Paul II, it is significant that the first
encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI is dedicated to the topic God is
Love. The Holy Father demonstrates that it is agape, the
self-sacrificial love of God that empowers romantic love, eros, with
life-giving and meaningful existence. In The Love That Satisfies,
Christopher West draws from the Pope s letter a series of insightful
and inspiring reflections on the nature of eros, agape, and the
relationship between the two. He shows that it is through recognizing
and embracing the beauty of God s self-sacrificial love that a person
is able to truly be satisfied. In uniting the love of God to the love
of spouse, the nuptial bond is fulfilled. Perhaps even more profound is
the reality that God and the Bridegroom of the Church has a personal
love for his Bride that may certainly be called eros (Benedict XVI,
Deus Caritas Est, n. 9).

Product Description:
Many
Christians find prayer difficult and, as a result, do not do much of
it. The fact is, many simply do not know how to pray. Even St Paul
notes this sad fact when, in Romans 8:26, he says, We do not know how
to pray as we ought. In this short book, written for a popular audience
by well-known Catholic biblical scholar Dr. Tim Gray, we discover the
secret of the saints which can enable us to enter into a lively
dialogue with God. Their secret: the ancient art of Lectio Divina
(divine, or sacred reading), which is reading, meditating on, and
praying the Scriptures. As St. Cyprian notes, Diligently practice
prayer and lectio divina. When you pray, you speak with God; when you
read [the Scriptures], God speaks to you. Here, we discover that we don
t need a mystic gene or divine epiphany to hear God; we simply need to
take up the Bible and read.

I found out our library bought two books I requested recently, and I also
received this from a member:

Dear Ana,

I have been having good luck with the Pope St. Nicholas list again. I save up
until I have 3 or 4 books to recommend. Thanks for helping with this email
list. I also read "My Grandfather's Son" by Clarence Thomas in February in
honor of Black History month. It is not actually a Catholic book but it does
emphasize how his Grandfather raised him lovingly in the Catholic Church, and
the photos show his teachers/nuns from Catholic grade school and high school
attending his swearing in ceremony. Not a children's book. Maybe most
libraries also have it in stock.

Warmly,

Candise & Crew

Product Description:

In
every young Catholic's heart there is a search for meaning. Yet many of
our youth never get beyond the material distractions of the world. In
fact, in a recent survey, teenagers were eight times more desirous of
being rich and five times more desirous of being famous than pursuing a
life of faith. To be young and Catholic in the modern world is no easy
task. Entertained and enticed beyond their ability to cope, millions of
Catholic teens and college students are drifting through life living
without purpose or meaning. They are searching for their own path, but
they are ill-equipped at such an impressionable age to discern the
direction that leads to everlasting happiness. In this book, renowned
Catholic leader Curtis Martin presents the evidence that we have been
made for more than just the intoxications of this world sex, partying,
and money. We have been made for greatness and we will only reach such
heights when we first come into a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ. Made for More makes a compelling case that: We have been made
for eternal happiness with God in heaven. The secret of happiness lies
in following God s plan for our life. Jesus is the Son of God who
preached the good news of salvation. Jesus founded a community of
believers, the Church, and that being part of this family of God is how
we find our direction and purpose and the surest path to eternal life.

As a prolife person, I've heard far too many times that "no unwanted child
should be born." Well, I propose that there is no such person as an unwanted
child. All children are wanted. They may not be wanted by their own parents, sad
to say, but someone wants that child. Someone wants to adopt that child and love
that child. Someone, somewhere. And, of course, our heavenly Father wants and
loves every child.

And, so, today's recommendation is a book on adoption by Catholic homeschooling
father of ten adopted children and psychologist, Dr. Ray Guarendi. If you
haven't been working very hard lately making your library purchase requests,
today is the day to get off your duffer and do it. This is a book I'm sure most
public libraries will say yes to purchasing. This is a book that needs to be on
their shelves and ready to be checked out by couples who are contemplating
adoption but need a little help.

I own a copy myself and can highly recommend it personally. So, with all that
said . . .

Product Description:

St.
Paul is one of the most important figures in Christian history. As Saul
of Tarsus he vigorously persecuted Christianity, even collaborating in
the death of Christianity s first martyr, Stephen. His encounter with
the resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus changed Paul s life, the
Christian Church, and world history. More than anyone else in the early
Church, Paul saw the universal nature of the Christian message. He
became the Apostle to the Gentiles and the Teacher of the Nations . As
the human author of half of the New Testament, Paul is a figure who
cannot be overlooked by anyone who wants to understand Jesus Christ and
Christianity.

In this book, Pope Benedict XVI, a profound
spiritual leader in his own right and a first-rate theologian and Bible
commentator, explores the legacy of Paul. Pope Benedict follows the
course of the Apostle s life, including his missionary journeys and his
relationship with the other apostles of Jesus such as St. Peter and St.
James, and Paul s martyrdom in Rome. Benedict also examines such
questions as: Did Paul know Jesus during his earthly life and how much
of Jesus teaching and ministry did he know of? Did Paul distort the
teachings of Jesus? What role did Jesus death and resurrection play in
Paul s teaching? What are we to make of Paul s teaching about the end
of the world? What does Paul s teaching say about the differences
between Catholic and Protestant Christians over salvation and the roles
of faith and works in the Christian life? How have modern Catholic and
Protestant scholars come together in their understanding of Paul? What
does Paul have to teach us today about living a spiritual life?

These
and other important issues are addressed in this masterful,
inspirational, and highly-readable presentation of St. Paul and his
writings by one of today s great spiritual teachers, Pope Benedict XVI.

The
Apostle Paul, an outstanding and almost inimitable yet stimulating
figure, stands before us as an example of total dedication to the Lord
and to his Church, as well as of great openness to humanity and its
cultures.

Product Description:

The uninterrupted life is not worth living
Got questions about Catholic family life? You've come to the right place! As
a lifelong Catholic, devoted wife, diligent homeschooler, and mother of seven,
Susie Lloyd knows lots of people who just might have the answers for you. Susie
herself is too busy to give advice: busy giving home haircuts and finding
missing socks; busy teaching her teen girls to drive, cook, and diagram
sentences; busy praying for divine protection while she races off to church
(late) in her full-size van. But every so often, Susie finds a few moments to
share the wit and wisdom she s gleaned from:
Teaching her kids about the Facts of Life Somewhere there must be a book
which can aid me in my duty. In it there would be many pages devoted to birds,
bees, and flowers. None involving kegs and station wagons.
Quelling her teen girls' phobias Top of the list is frumpophobia: fear of
being seen in a skirt when every other teen at the party, except the statue of
Mary, will be in jeans. It gets worse if your dad thinks it would be lovely not
only to wear the skirt but a veil as well.
Handing on Catholic customs When I was small, my mother taught me to say a
Hail Mary whenever I heard an ambulance. It's really a beautiful habit and habit
is the word -- I don't know how many people I've prayed for whose car alarm was
going off.
Getting older Some people tell me I could be my teens older sister. These
people are usually 103 years old and wear their glasses hanging from a chain.
But I ll take it.
Strangers who question the size of her family What's funny is, the people
who call you nuts really expect you to act sane, and not like this: Nuts?
Children, would one of you be a good girl and get the gun out of Mommy s diaper
bag?
Enduring her children's music lessons Piano recitals are a time-honored way
of gaining a plenary indulgence, provided we hold no attachment to murdering the
piano teacher.
Joing a homeschool co-op None of us wanted to quit homeschooling; we just
wanted somebody else to do it for us.
As she did in her beloved first book, Please Don't Drink the Holy Water, in
these pages Susie Lloyd will charm and edify you with her offbeat -- but always
pitch-perfect -- take on the joys and challenges of raising a Catholic family in
today's world.

Comments:
As the catalog says: forget the sweet-faced cherubs of popular culture,
and brace yourself for a far more potent reality: powerful heavenly
beings who play a significant role in the drama of your daily life. Our
fellowship with the angels (says Aquilina) is “not an ornament on our
religion; it’s a life skill.”

RUSSELL SHAW: “Angels of
God is a learned, readable and ultimately inspiring account — based on
Scripture, the teaching and worship of the Church, and the real-life
experience of many individuals — of the role played by these heavenly
friends of ours in God’s providential plan and in our lives. If you
want to get to know your guardian angel, start here.”
MARCUS GRODI:
“… by far one of the most thorough and helpful books I’ve ever read
about angels. Michael’s book remains safely within the boundaries of
Sacred Tradition and gives readers a clearer understanding of
ourselves, in relation to God and his heavenly realm.8
0
FATHER T.G. MORROW: Everything you ever wanted to know about angels and never
asked. Another big hit for Mike Aquilina.”

Product Description:
The Death of a Pope is a powerful new novel by the acclaimed British writer
Piers Paul Read.

For more information about the book, visit The Death of a Pope website
http://www.ignatius.com/death-of-a-pope-book/

Juan Uriarte, a handsome and outspoken Spanish ex-priest, seems to be the model
of nonviolence and compassion for the poor and downtrodden. So why is he on
trial, accused of terrorist activities? His worldwide Catholic charitable
outreach program is suspected of being a front for radicals. The trial is
covered by Kate Ramsay, a young British reporter, who sets out to undercover the
truth about Uriarte and his work. She travels with him to Africa to see his work
first hand but soon finds herself attracted to him.

Meanwhile an international conspiracy is growing, one that reaches into the
Vatican itself. When the death of Pope John Paul II brings the conclave that
will elect Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI, a terrorist plot involving
blackmail, subterfuge, and mass murder begins to fall into place... a plot that
could spell disaster for the Catholic Church and the world.

Piers Paul Read's powerful tale combines vivid characters, high drama, love,
betrayal, faith, and redemption in a story of intrigue, of church espionage, and
an attempt to destroy the longest continuous government in the worldthe Papacy.
The Death of a Pope races toward an unexpected and unforgettable conclusion.

In The Death of a Pope, the versatile Piers Paul Read, who has distinguished
himself in many genres, returns to what can be called the ecclesiastical
thriller. If the mystery looks to the past to explain a crime already committed,
the thriller aims to prevent something from happening. When that something is a
terrorist act, planned for the Vatican, drama is assured, and Read, writing in
the present tense but in multiple viewpoint, takes us from character to
character, from city to city, from continent to continent, with everything
converging on the Vatican during the conclave following the death of John Paul
II. To say more would rob the reader of his pleasure. The Death of a Pope is a
great Read in every sense of the term.
 Ralph McInerny

The Death of a Pope is a faith-driven theological thriller, narrated by a
storyteller of the first order whose unassailable orthodoxy is as refreshing as
it is rare among the bedraggled ranks of contemporary novelists.
Joseph Pearce, author The Quest for Shakespeare

Piers Paul Read has managed to combine sheer storytelling power with great
learning and insight about the inner workings of the Church to fashion an
entertainment of the highest order. If John LeCarre took on Vatican politics,
his book of suspense might aspire to be much like this one
Ron Hansen, author Exiles

If you love the Catholic Church, you will probably love this book whether or not
you love a good story. If you love a good story, you will probably love this
book whether or not you love the Catholic Church. But if you love both the
Church and a good story, you will certainly love this book.
Peter Kreeft, author Because God is Real

Piers Paul Read is a best-selling novelist, writer and playright with numeous
popular books including Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, Ablaze: The
Story of Chernobyl, Alec Guinness: The Authorised Biography, The Templars, Monk
Dawson, A Patriot in Berlin and Alice in Exile. Read is a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Literature and a member of the Council of the Society of Authors. He
has also written a number of television plays, and several of his novels have
been filmed for cinema and television. He lives in London.

I'm a little late in reporting my success story, but wanted to share anyway. I
requested "Our Lady of Kibeho" using our library's on-line request feature. I
had never done that before, but thought I would give it a try. The next day, a
librarian called me to say that they were ordering the book and asked if I had
any other books to request! I ran to the computer to check the Pope Saint
Nicholas V list and added 3 other books. I was so thrilled that the process was
so easy! In a matter of a couple of weeks, the books were in my hands. Thank
you for all the superb recommendations!

Product Description
What do Christians believe? What gives meaning to our life? What is the purpose
of life? The Christian answer to these questions is found in the Creed, in the
profession of faith. But what do the articles of this confession actually mean?
And how to they affect our lives?
Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, takes a fresh look at these timeless
questions. This work is a reflection of the profound, personal insights of
Benedict XVI, but also of the great foundations of Christianity: faith, hope,
and charity.

Ratzinger writes eloquently and persuasively about the importance for followers
of Christ to understand well what they believe so one can live as a serious
Christian in today's secular world. He talks in depth about the true meaning of
faith, hope, and love-the love of God and the love of neighbor. He also
discusses the crucial importance of a lived faith, for the believer himself as
well as being a witness for our age, and striving to bring faith in line with
the present age that has veered off into rampant secularism and materialism.

In our generation the Christian Faith finds itself in a much deeper crisis than
at any other time in the past. In this situation it is no solution to shut our
eyes in fear in the face of pressing problems, or to simply pass over them. If
faith is to survive this age, then it must be lived, and above all, lived in
this age. And this is possible only if a manifestation of faith is shown to have
value for our present day, by growing to knowledge and fulfillment.
-Pope Benedict XVI

THIS DUMB OX TAUGHT THE WHOLE CHURCH

Because he was big and strong and sometimes slow to speak, Thomas Aquinas's
schoolmates called him the Dumb Ox. Not long afterward, he came to be called
Doctor (which means "teacher") because he could actually understand complicated
things quickly and explain them well. Which is what he loved to do, preaching
often and writing in the course of his lifetime no fewer than eighty-five works
of philosophy and theology books that changed the Church and the world. Indeed,
in 1320, less than fifty years after Thomas died, Thomas's biographer said that
"throughout the entire world Thomas's teachings have spread among the faithful,
and the whole Church is instructed by his voice."

Today, the Church Herself calls Saint Thomas Aquinas the Angelic Doctor ("the
teacher who is like an angel"): pure, strong, close to God, and truly a
messenger of divine light.

Scholar he was, but to those who knew him, Saint Thomas gave not only beautiful
sermons and books, but also his heart, his devotion, and his love. Initially
written for children, but a delight for grownups as well, these pages show the
beauty and holiness that belonged especially to Saint Thomas Aquinas, the man of
learning who was also a man of God: the patron saint of all those, young and
old, who love the truth with their whole hearts, and who wish to know and serve
it well.

About the Author
Raissa Oumansoff Maritain (1883-1960) was a Jewish-born Russian-Ukrainian poet.
At the Sorbonne in Paris, she met the young philosopher Jacques Maritain. They
married in 1904, entered the Catholic Church in 1906, and in the following
decades were major figures in the revival of Catholicism in Europe.

A hint for listmates:
Frequently when I search to see if my local library has the suggested title, I
find that it has similar subject matter. Check these titles out. My local public
library has every book George Weigel ever wrote, and generally a good selection
of Catholic literature. If books in a certain genre are popular the library will
get more in that genre.
