Dear Library Evangelists,

Perhaps its been awhile since you joined, so I'd like to remind everyone how
they can use this list to help get better books into the library, especially
books for Catholics or those wanting to learn about the Catholic Church.

How does the Pope St. Nicholas V list work?

I am the only one to post messages in order to keep email to a minimum.
Usually once each week I'll feature a book/audio/video that would be beneficial
to
Catholics in general. I will also provide the information necessary for you to
then fill out a patron request form at your public library. (You can search
for your library's website at http://lists.webjunction.org/libweb/)

If you would like to see your public library carry the title, first go to
your library's website and make sure that it is not in their catalog. If it is
not in the library catalog then find out how to make purchasing suggestions
online and make a suggestion! If this service is not offered online, ask for
patron request forms the next time you visit the library, fill one out, and keep
a
few at home so that you can easily transfer information from my email to the
card.

Some tips:
--The form you need to fill out may be called a variety of things: patron
request, item request, purchase suggestion, or something similar.
--Sometimes it's easier to ask a main library instead of a suburban or branch
library.
--You'll have a better chance of a purchase at a big library than a small one
which needs to get rid of books to save room.
--Titles published in the past year are more likely to be purchased.
Librarians want their purchases to have a long shelf life and so are weary of
older
books.
--If you do suggest an older title, make sure to comment that it is a
"classic" and will be checked out for years to come.
--Don't give up if you feel that your suggestions are ignored. Your voice
will eventually be heard!
--Tell all of your like-minded friends to make purchasing suggestions too.
There is power in numbers.

If you have success stories, I'd love to hear from you!

Blessings,
Maureen :)

Fun and Edifying, September 11, 2006
Reviewer:M. Campbell
Being fairly new to the Catholic faith, I love this book. It's not a
substitute for the Bible and Catechism, but certainly helps with learning the
faith.

I had never heard of the Method Loci and think it is great for memorizing
lists. It can be applied to any list, whether studying for an exam, going
grocery
shopping, or making a to do list while talking with your boss.

I agree with another review in that may not be so great with poetry or prose.
However, he does provide 30 "memory master tips and facts" on the art of
memorization, which may transfer over to poetry and prose.

This book is fun to read. The author comes across as brilliant, but has a
wonderful ability to bring it down to my level. It's the best book I've
purchased
in a long time.

Title is an exageration, July 28, 2006
Reviewer:catholicmom&teacher
This book is helpful for learning the Method of Loci as a memory tool. It
will allow you to memorize lists of things, however it does not really help you
to memorize "Most Anything Else" as the title states. It will not be helpful
for learning catechism q/a, for example or passages from poetry or prose. It is
limited. If the title had not been misleading I would have given it 4 stars,
but as far as memory books go this really is just average and not as far
reaching as some other books. The method is not an old, lost method as is
implied by
the publishers blurb. Any good website that teaches memorization techniques
covers exactly what is in this book.

An unforgettable book!, July 27, 2006
Reviewer:Rhett Brotherton

I was somewhat skeptical this book could deliver the claims it made. I had
read other memory books in the past and was unimpressed with the methods they
proposed. There seemed to be something missing that kept me from fully realizing
my potential. This book provided that missing part. I don't want to give away
what it is but, I can assure, if you apply the methods the author outlines in
this book you will definitely increase your ability to retain and recall at
will almost anything you can imagine. It took only two, 45 minutes sessions for
me to memorize all 73 books of the Bible, in order, and backwards!

Mr. Vost writes in a breezy style that entertains while informing. His book
will be especially useful to anyone tasked with teaching others be they child
or adult. If as a teacher you have struggled for a way to make a dry list or
technical term memorable, this book will give you everything you need to make
that happen. I plan on stealing...err... using (wouldn't want to violate the
seventh commandment) the vivid memory anchors described in this book when
teaching adult religion classes.

Some might be turned away by the content Mr. Vost concentrates on, namely the
basic tenants of the Catholic faith. Don't let it. Even if you are not
Christian, you should read and apply the methods taught in this book.

From the publisher:
"They laughed when I said I could name
all 27 books of the New Testament . . .
...but after I named them all in order,
plus the 46 books of the Old Testament,
they begged me to show them how I did it.”

Yes, I know that memorizing the Faith is no substitute for living a holy
life, but even devout people can’t live by truths and precepts they don’t
remember.
That’s why, over 700 years ago, St. Thomas Aquinas perfected an easy method
for his students to memorize most any information, but especially the truths
taught by Christ and His Church.
As the years passed, our need for this ancient art of memorization grew, yet
somehow our culture largely forgot it . . . which is why today, when you and I
try to remember a list of things, we have to repeat their names over and
over. Or, to remember to call the dentist, we tie a string on our finger. And we
clutch at any means whatsoever to recall our passwords for ATMs, credit cards,
and voicemail, our login names for Yahoo, eBay, and Amazon, and the host of
other names and numbers that clog our minds and clutter our days.
Now, thanks to the delightful pages of Memorize the Faith!, you can easily
keep all these in mind — and learn the Faith! — by tapping into the power of
the classical memory system that helped St. Thomas become the Church’s
preeminent theologian, and made it easier for him to become one of its greatest
saints.
Here, Catholic scholar Kevin Vost makes available again Aquinas’s
easy-to-learn method — the method Dr. Vost himself has used for decades to
recall names,
dates, phone numbers, the first dozen digits of pi (3.141592653589) and even
whether, when his wife called him at work today, she asked him to bring home
ice cream and toffee . . . or was it truffles and coffee?
Indeed, Dr. Vost will teach you to remember virtually anything, but he
devotes most of his book to showing you how to improve your memory of Catholic
truths so you can live the Faith better.
By the time you finish this book, you will have memorized dozens of key
teachings of the Church, along with hundreds of precepts, traditions,
theological
terms, Scripture verses, and other elements of the Faith that every good
Catholic needs to know by heart.
Memory is the foundation of wisdom. It makes holiness easier. To grow wiser
in the Faith . . . and holier . . . turn to Memorize the Faith! today.
* * *
Memorize the Faith! will teach you and your children how to remember
anything, but it’s particularly useful to those involved in religious
education:
catechists and converts, CCD teachers, RCIA members, and homeschoolers of all
ages.
Here, Dr. Vost and St. Thomas Aquinas show you easy ways to memorize the
following truths and precepts of our Faith, plus many more:
The 9 Beatitudes
The 12 Apostles
The 7 Virtues
The 7 Sacraments
The 4 Last Things
The 7 Capital Sins
The 10 Commandments
The 4 Marks of the Church
The 14 Stations of the Cross
The 5 Precepts of the Church
The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit
The 7 Spiritual Works of Mercy
The 20 Mysteries of the Rosary
The 7 Corporal Works of Mercy
The 10 Holy Days of Obligation
The 6 Sins Against the Holy Spirit
The 5 Proofs for the Existence of God
The 27 Books of the New Testament
The 46 Books of the Old Testament
And anything else you want to remember, from the 14 items on your grocery
list to the birthdays of your 7 nephews and nieces!

Title: Ten Dates Every Catholic Should Know
Author: Diane Moczar
Publisher: Sophia Institute Press
Date Published: Feb., 2006
ISBN: 1933184159
Price: 13.95
Comments: The divine surprises and chastisements that shaped the Church and
changed the world.

From the publisher, http://www.sophiainstitute.com/
Here are the saints and sinners, popes and kings that God used to shape his
Church and change the world. You’ll meet Clovis and Charlemagne, Luther and
Pope Leo, Suleiman and St. Francis, the Arians, the Franks, the Huguenots, and
others whose sins or sacrifices altered the course of history.
Here, too, are the wars and plagues, the ideas and institutions — and, yes,
the miracles — that gave birth to our Christian civilization and often
threatened to doom it. Experience the battles of Tours and Lepanto, the
Crusades, the
Russian Revolution, and Fatima, the miracle that foretold (and offered a way
to prevent) the conflicts that killed millions in the twentieth century.
Wars and terrorism have rendered the first years of our new century no less
bloody. Has God now abandoned us?
Ten Dates Every Catholic Should Know finds the answer in history: from the
first days of the Christian era, at key moments when civilization hung in the
balance, God has intervened — sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically — but
ever and always he has come forward himself or given strength to those who were
faithful to him. Consider, for example:
Constantine, the pagan general who, in a desperate hour, saw a vision that
made him a Christian and led to the conversion of the entire Roman Empire
Pope St. Leo, who confronted Attila the Hun face-to-face and, without sword
or dagger, turned back this “Scourge of God” and all his murderous hordes
The surprising victories of the outgunned armies that thrust back the Moors,
the Turks, and the barbarians — just when Christendom faced annihilation
Plus: St. Genevieve, Pepin the Short, Pope St. Pius V, St. Margaret Mary, and
countless others who, in crucial moments, were called by God to save his
people and give new life to our culture and his Church.
Ten Dates Every Catholic Should Know is essential reading for any Catholic
who wants to understand the history of our Faith. But it will give you more than
knowledge: you’ll close this book with renewed confidence that no matter how
dark and dangerous the times may be, God has never abandoned his people . . .
and never will.

 Divine Surprises, October 21, 2006
Diane Moczar has done the seemingly impossible: written a terrific,
thematically complete and coherent history of the two-thousand-year-old Catholic
Church
in about 170 pages. She is able to accomplish this feat by her wise choice of
format. Instead of deploying the usual artificial breaks in time like "Dark
Ages" or "Reformation," she identifies ten events that have served as hinges
upon which Catholic and civilizational history turned. She then examines these
hinges -- the conversion of Constantine, the Baptism of Clovis, the crowning of
Charlemagne, etc. -- for their significance, and links them in a chain all
the way to Fatima and the twentieth century.

The chapter on Clovis's baptism is fascinating. As Rome disintegrates in the
West, a fifteen-year-old Frankish pagan assumes the throne in Gaul. For a time
it seems that the king is impervious to conversion. But the patient witness
of both his saintly wife (St.) Clotilda and the bishop St. Remigius wears him
down, and he is baptised to great aplomb on Christmas Day in 496. Western
civilization thus survives an existential crisis, and a foundation is laid for
the
era of Christendom ushered in by Charlemagne three centuries later.

Readers should know that Ms. Moczar is a decidedly Catholic historian. She
attempts to discern the hand of God -- Providence -- in the events she
describes. You may disagree with some of her conclusions about the heaviness of
His
hand in this event or that, but she is nonetheless a first-rate scholar and,
just
as importantly, an excellent writer with crisp prose.

"Ten Dates" would make an interesting selection for a Catholic book club, as
members could explore a chapter-length event per month. Ms. Moczar's style is
very accessible, and readers as young as high-school-age will have no
difficulty navigating the text.

Highly Recommended, April 29, 2006
Reviewer:Michael Johnson
I purchased this book randomly after browsing through the selections of a
small catholic book store. Since the author was unknown to me my expectations
were rather low and the book actually sat undisturbed on my nightstand for a
couple of weeks. However when I finally began to read the book I found the
contents so riveting I couldn't put it down.

As a recent catholic convert and an individual who unjustifiably fancies
himself an amateur historian, to me this book was a revelation. I had never prev
iously read a history from a catholic perspective and this book was the perfect
introduction. I'm convinced the thesis of this small book could be expanding
into a phenomenal multivolume work.

I found the author's chapters entitled "The Protestant Catastrophe" and "The
Age of Revolution" especially fascinating. These chapters made clear concepts
I was only beginning to independently form.

This book found its way into my hands at just the right time and has had a
profound effect on how I view history.

Stop the Presses!, Reviewer:Matt I. Federoff
I am teaching a class of Catholic high school students about the Middle Ages,
leading into the decline of Christendom. The chapter I opened up to was "The
Protestant Catastrophe" and it alone is worth the price of the book. It clears
up the confusion about the climate that produced such a fractured Christian
world (hint: it wasn't about the moral laxity of the clergy or even doubts
about the Real Presence. It was much more about the weakened spiritual state of
the laity and the rise of nationalism.) I could easily follow when the author
"connected the dots" and frankly, "followed the money" (the rising wealth of the
merchant and business man in a prospering proto-capitalistic society) to show
how easily men's hearts were turned from God to wordly affairs.
Great book!

Dear Library Evangelists,

I normally send emails suggesting Catholic books to recommend to your
library. Today's email takes the opposite approach.

First, I ask you to please pray for my friend Linda. She's meeting with the
board of her library on Thursday to ask them to remove the book It’s
Perfectly Normal, written by Robie Harris and illustrated by Michael
Emberley.
Linda stumbled upon the book when she was browsing the children's section.
Thank goodness it wasn't her child who found it!

The book, if you're not familiar with it, is a sex manual for children.
Linda, of course, immediately brought it to the library's attention. The library
responded by moving it to the young adult (teen) section. Linda appealed the
decision and asked that it be removed completely.

Here are some articles on the book:

I encourage all of you to check your library's card catalog to see if they
have this book on its shelves. If so, email them immediately and ask them to
remove the book from the library altogether. At the very least, it should moved
to the adult section. Then ask all your friends, neighbors, and family to do
the same. And, please, feel free to share this email with others.

Thank you for all you do to help our public libraries!

From Publishers Weekly
New York Daily News columnist and blogger Eden offers a Christian apologetic
for premarital chastity, aimed at "marriage-minded single women who'd had
enough of the Sex and the City lifestyle." Eden herself is a convert to both
Christianity and chastity, and now an unmarried 30-something, she's persuaded
that
chastity is more "hope-filled" and "vibrant" than sex outside of marriage. She
draws on John Paul II's theology of the body to explain why Christians should
reserve sex for marriage; "our bodies are living metaphors of God's loving
nature," she argues, and to have sex casually is to make a false promise of
total commitment. Eden doesn't just theologize—she gives practical advice
about
how women should relate to their parents (if yours are divorced, as Eden's are,
you should resist the temptation to blame them for bad sexual choices you've
made) and masturbation (avoid it—you'll just feel lonely afterward). But
trading on familiar (and tired) gender stereotypes, she notes that men lose
interest
in women who pursue them. In a sea of evangelical books on chastity that read
like they were written for college students, Eden's will stand out as a book
for grownups and should be popular with more mature Christian women. (Dec. 5)

Book Description

Finally, a book for single women who, unsatisfied with living a worldly
lifestyle, want to give their lives a new and godly direction. Author Dawn Eden,
a
Jewish-born rock journalist turned salty Christian blog queen, gives these
readers the positive and uplifting message that they've been wanting to
hear-that
spiritual healing and a renewed outlook await them. Using her own experiences
in the New York City singles jungle, she shows women how they too can go from
insecurity to purity, and from forlorn to reborn. She tells women who have
been around the block how to find their way home.
Among inspirational books for single women, The Thrill of the Chaste is a
pair of hip Ray-Bans in a field of rose-colored glasses. This isn't a book for
dainty damsels in lacy white dresses patiently awaiting their handsome prince.
This is for real women who need strong, motivational, and deeply moral messages
to counter the ones they receive from a superficial, sex-obsessed world.

Dear Library Evangelists,

Recently I sent an email about It's Perfectly Normal, a sex manual with
explicit images written for 10-year-old children. One thing that is seriously
lacking in my local public library is a collection of decent books on human
sexuality. Over the next month, beginning tomorrow, I will concentrate on
suggesting
books about chastity, JP2's Theology of the Body, and so on.

I hope you all will join me in asking our public libraries to stock their
shelves with good, positive books on this topic.

snakes, whales, leopards—even termites! But most important, Little Elephant
discovers that God loves him. This story reassures children that God loves them
uniquely and that his love will be with them always—no matter who they are or
where they go. Beautiful illustrations accompany this tender story. Sure to
become a family favorite!

Title: Everything Is Grace: The Life and Way of Therese of Lisieux
Author: Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC
Publisher: The Word Among Us Press
Date Published: January 2007
ISBN: 1593250959
Price: 15.95 softcover
Comments:

From the publisher, _http://bookstore.wau.org/_ (http://bookstore.wau.org/) :

Thérèse of Lisieux has been called the greatest saint of modern times, but
some view her spirituality as sentimental and syrupy. Joseph F. Schmidt, FSC,
dispels that notion by contending that Thérèse’s “little way” is really
the
gospel message—a message that can best be understood in the context of her
life.
Schmidt does a masterful job of weaving together biographical details with
Thérèse’s profound insights on God’s love and mercy. This book is a
must-read
for anyone who wants an introduction to Thérèse’s spirituality as well as
for
those who desire a deeper appreciation of her “little way”—a way that
continues
to speak to Catholics today.

Includes photographs of Thérèse as a young girl and throughout her life.

Title: No Place for God, The Denial of the Transcendent in Modern
Church Architecture
Author: by Moyra Doorly
Publisher: Ignatius Press
Date Published: March 2007
ISBN: 1586171534
Length: 160 pages
Price: $14.95 Papaerback

From the publisher's website, http://www.ignatius.com/index.aspx:

In their quest to adapt to and speak to the present age, Catholics
over the last forty years have unquestioningly allowed the trends in
modern architecture to fashion their churches, and the outcome has
been the construction of the ugliest and emptiest churches in history,
according to author Moyra Doorly, an architect from England.

Doorly traces the principles of modern architecture to the ideas of
space that spread rapidly during the 20th century. She sees a parallel
between the desacralization of the heavens, and consequently of our
churches, and the inward search for a god of one’s own. This double
movement"away from the transcendent God, who reveals himself to man
through Scripture and tradition, and toward an inner truth relevant
only to oneself"has emptied our churches of the majesty and beauty
that once inspired reverence in both believers and unbelievers alike.
Illustrated with many photographs.

I successfully requested my library system to purchase this book! My
library system places all purchase requests automatically on hold,
when I go to my weekly visit to the library sometimes a new book is
there just for me! This is a fascinating book about how these three
people, who in the beginning of the book are portrayed as not having
much chance to succeed greatly in life, have simply changed the world
as we know it, almost overnight. I just wrote a brief review for this
book on Amazon. I first saw it on the Ignatius Press catalog.

Grief is the painful process of adjusting to a loss. This collection of
meditations is designed for anyone experiencing loss, whether it be the death of
a
loved one or the loss of health, financial security, or relationships. Each
reflection focuses on a different topic, moving readers from acknowledging pain
and loss to healing and new life. Using Scripture and prayer, Simsic gently
shepherds readers through difficult issues like forgiveness, shock, depression,
and the fear of letting go, without ever resorting to shallow sentimentality.
This expanded version of the original book, Cries of the Heart: Praying Our
Losses, features additional meditations and photographs from nature. A wonderful
resource for people going through times of loss as well as for those looking
for a gift to comfort family or friends.

Not mine! This is already on order.

Also in my periodic check of titles I have requested, I noticed today
my library now has Good Discipline, Great Teens by Ray Guarendi and
Everything is Grace by Joseph F. Schmidt.

I have a submitted a reserve request for all three of these titles. I
hope I don't get them all the same week!

Dear Library Evangelists,

Just want to pass on a little tidbit about our Pope St. Nicholas V Yahoo
Group found at
_http://www.fathersofthechurch.com/2007/06/08/in-the-nick-of-history/_
(http://www.fathersofthechurch.com/2007/06/08/in-the-nick-of-history/) .

Mike, the blog author, is a dear family friend and makes me blush terribly in
his post, but I am so thrilled to have him promote our work here.

It is a great thing you all do -- to ask your library to purchase the books
posted here. It takes so little time and effort, yet has such long lasting
benefits (perhaps even into eternity!).

Just last week, I had a homeschool mom approach me at a gathering and thank
me for getting so many good Catholic books into our local public library. It is
something that greatly enhances her homeschool, helping her to bring rock
solid books to her children and spouse.

Thank you all for being a part of the PSN5 group and working to evangelize
through your libraries.

If you have a blog or website, please link to
_http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PopeSaintNicholasV/_
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PopeSaintNicholasV/) and
invite others to join us in this important apostolate.

Blessings,
Maureen :)
