Plug It Out! Unplugged in NYC and Beyond, is a small movement attempting to go BIG. Inspired by the great success of Earth Hour in Sydney, in March 2007, we encouraged everyone to Plug It Out! on Earth Day 2007, by removing themselves from the electric grid, particularly between the hours of 6:30 and 10:30 pm. This means physically unplugging everything from the walls, (or turning the power off at the main source) & mentally unplugging from all the conveniences and distractions we take for granted, to appreciate all that is available to us, and acknowledge all that is not available to much of the world. This has gone on to be a once a month event - our Plug It Out members unplugging every second Saturday. We hope you will join us and spread the word!

Here's a chance to light candles, be peaceful, and not "need": Lights, TV, computer, appliances, etc. to make our world go round. It's a time to hang out or in with friends, family, play music unplugged, tell stories, write, dance, meditate, stretch your body, play, frolic. Enrichment vs. deprivation. A great time.

Our mission is to keep growing and spreading out and even to have a huge Earth Hour right here in NYC.

Remember, you can do this everyday to some degree. Ultimately, that's the goal of this project. Power off/unplug all the things you don't need during the day, while you are out, while you are asleep. (& esp. while away) Use one lightbulb in a room instead of two and switch your bulbs to CFLs. More and more changes that add up to a big difference in the world, in your energy bill! Did you know that leaving your computer on 24/7 produces 1.5 tonnes of emissions annually - that's just YOUR one computer. Turn off and unplug before you leave work and encourage co-workers to do the same, and only having your home computer on when you are at home, and using it. And make powering off easy with lighted strips...
