Tiklop Society of the Philippines is an organization for folding bike
enthusiasts, as well as for those interested in these remarkable works of
engineering. Formed early this year, Tiklop's existence is timely as LRT1 and
LRT2 just recently allowed folding bikes to board their trains. Of course you
know that alreadyt unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past month.

This will be Tiklop Society's first assemby, to be held on Andres
Bonifacio's birthday (Andres.... Tiklop, get it? hehe) This is open to
all folding bike enthusiasts, both owners and those who are curious
about these wonderful machines. We will meet at the AS parking lot in
UP Diliman, have a mini lecture and bike demos of the different
folders, and there will be some bikes for sale at very reasonable
prices. We will then bike to the nearest LRT station where we will
board the train towards Binondo for lunch. We hope to see you there!
Bring your bikes, if you have any, and spending money for the LRT fare
and lunch. This is going to br fun!

What: Tiklop Society's First Assemble/Ride
Where: AS Parking Lot, UP Diliman - LRT2 Katipunan Station - Binondo Lunch
When: November 30, 2009 (Monday Holiday) 9:00 AM
What's Happening: Short Primer, Bike Demos, Open Forum, Bike Sale, Bike Ride,
LRT Ride, Binondo Lunch
What To Bring: Yourself. Your bike. Your LRT Money (30 pesos). Your lunch money
(well, I don't know how much you eat). Open Mind.

Those with full bikes but would like to join us, you can ride with us to the LRT
Station, then bike below the railway while we ride the train.

We welcome you to the fold!

Hi!

Because of the nature of its usage, rollers teach you proper pedaling and
balance. Most don't come with any resistance unit though, so you must use your
gears in conjunction with your workout program. BTW, its kinda nasty to come
off the rollers at speeds above 70 kph. Its advisable not to have kids or dogs
around while using your rollers ;-)

There is no learning curve to begin using trainers. Trainers also come with
resistance units, some via cable remote. You can simulate climbing by raising
the front of your bike (I used several yellow page books), which you can't do on
rollers because they have to be flat on the floor (instead you turn your biggest
gear, which is also good for power training).

Both are helpful, and most use them for those days you can't go out on the road.
But in my experience as a busy professional, I realized that I can get a better
workout on my rollers and using Carmichael Training System DVD's. Its best for
short duration (1 hour or so) but high intensity training. Both rollers and
trainers will wear down your rear tires fast although I think trainers wear down
rear tires even faster. You could purchase a beater tire for this purpose.

IMHO, its a real toss up between the two, their prices are about the same
anyway. What is really important is the training program you'll follow and how
regularly you use that program. Also, if you don't have a heart rate monitor, at
least you should know your Rate of Perceived Exertion. Riding outdoors is still
the better option for training, especially for climbing.

Hope this helps.

P.S. (Unsolicited plugging, hehehe) If anyone wants a CUSTOMIZED training
program from a Sports Science graduate (and athlete to boot), just look for the
FB account of SAUL SIBAYAN of Team JAC Motors and send him a PM. Just meet with
him and give him your profile, your goals, work/school schedule, etc and he'll
make a custom program just for you :-) Best thing is he doesn't charge that
much. I think Saul is also here on PCN.

Hey!  When I did a ride with Ed last September, we passed a hanging bridge to
get to Mandug, lumabas kami ng Buhangin then Diversion Road going back to MTS.
Not sure if we came from Calinan though, but we did make a big loop coming from
MTS side.

The next day, Ed and I passed another bridge traversing the Davao River coming
from the Mandug side, but it wasn't hanging.  Mas exciting yung hanging bridge
syempre :-)

Ask Ed Leunberger, owner of Boondocks Bikes at MTS.  He and his guys would
know.  Enjoy!

Hi Guys,

Does anybody of you know kung paano makarating sa Calinan via Mandug? I heard na
may tulay na dapat daanan para maka-shortcut ka papunta sa Calinan. Hindi ko
lang alam kung saan talaga sa Mandug yung tulay na sinasabi ng ibang cyclista. I
want to give it a try this coming weekend na isali ko 'to sa mga routa ko.
Please tulungan n'yo ako kung saan talaga yung tulay.

Better kung may map kayo kung paano makadaan from Mandug to Calinan. Thinks in
advance guys.

There is an alternative route and you dont have to go down the bridge and
traverse the river to get to the other side. There is a jeepney stop in that
road before the bridge in front of the Bulalohans. Take the right (road
perpendicular to the main road) which will take you to sitio Rizza. Take all
roads to the left and you will end up 500meters before palo alto gate. This
detour is about 8kms. and the road is all cemented. The last 200 meters is lung
busting 20% (at least). Road is safe with very little or no traffic at all.
