West Holiday Meet & Greet
Thursday, December 17th
7pm - 9pm

Looking Glass Lounge
3634 Georgia Ave NW
between
Princeton and Otis

We want to get the word out about the West Education Campus - Holiday
Meet & Greet. This event, hosted by the West PSCO with the
Looking
Glass Lounge
, is for parents, teachers, staff, community members,
neighbors, prospective parents to get a chance to know one another
better, ring in the holidays and learn about plans for Spring 2009 and
beyond at West Education Campus.

West is a DC public school serving grades PS-8 located at 1338
Farragut Street between 14th and 13th.

Our Meet & Greet will have a book raffle to raise money for programs
at West including our Monarch Butterfly garden, science labs, c
omputer labs,
and uniform closet. Books include those from local authors or those with
a connection to West, including Art Smith, George Pelicanos,
Edward
Jones
 and Marjorie Williams.

If you are considering West for your kids next year or want to get
involved as a tutor, class reader or volunteer then come on out and
learn more about the school and our community. The lottery for DCPS
opens in
January, 2010. We will be hosting an open house on January
7th, 2010
and will have additional information available at the Meet &
Greet.

Pediatric and Adolescent Care of Silver Spring  301-681-6730 .
We love Dr. Feldman, but there are other doctors there as well.

A bit of a schlep, but worth it to us.

We love our pediatrician: Dr. June Fusner and Nancy Hoover (nurse prac.) in kensington, md. We usually see Nancy; she is fabulous.
At first we tried to find someone in DC but didn't like the doctors we talked to. We gave up when we found this office and besides, it takes us just as long to get downtown as it does to Kensington!

We use Cameron Medical Group in downtown Silver Spring which is convenient and they are fine. For the initial appt., if you ask to see a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor, you will get in a lot quicker. They take Carefirst, I'm not sure what else.

Who is your pediatrician? We are having to switch insurance plans and have to find one that takes United. Can anyone else recommend good pediatricians, esp. near Silver Spring/Takoma?

Thanks,

Sarah

I have heard great things about the school but was under the impression that it didn't start until age 4.

Hello.  My name is Paige Malkus and I live in the Petworth area.  I have recently decided to stop working full time and as a result, my husband and I will no longer need our babysitter to watch our 2 boys.  Our babysitter will be looking for a part time babysitting job (2-3 days/week) starting in January.  I can't say enough about her - she is a hard worker, very conscientious, and very loving to children.  If you are in need of babysitting or if you know of anyone that is looking for a babysitter, please contact me (see information below).
Thank you and happy holidays!

Hello Petworth Parents,

I know this is last minute (dont ask) but we are looking for a babysitter for our toddler tomorrow evening. Can anyone recommend someone who might be available tomorrow?

We would love to find a regular babysitter in our neighborhood; or even participate in a local babysitting cooperative. Are any of you familiar with babysitting coops? Are there any in the area? Any tips or words of wisdom for finding a good babysitter?

thanks in advance,
Emily

Our daughter is 2 years old and her normal day care is closed on the 14th and so I need someone to watch her either in the morning or the afternoon (from 8-12 or 1-4). I can handle the other shift. This can be at our house or theirs.

We did the coop playschools at Mitchell Park and Chevy Chase Rec Center.  Overall it was a good experience.  So much depends on the level of commitment of the other families and the teacher at your site.  One nice thing for us is that we came out knowing lots of families and kids who we run into around town.

This year the DCPS lottery starts on Jan 28, and you can choose up to 6 schools (one more than last year!) Your child has to turn 3 before Sept. 30, 2010 in order to enroll for PS-3 in the 2010-11 school year; some of the charter schools have different cut-off ages (ie, LAMB is Sept. 1 for PS-3). LAMB is strict about the birthday, and from my experience so are the DCPS programs.
This group lists all the stats about PCS and DCPS schools, it's not been updated for 2009, but it's a good resource and lists which schools have what programs in DC:

we had a good experience with the cooperative play program at the chevy chase community center. me son was enrolled last school year and his teacher Mrs. Rawles was great! Field trips, a lot of playing, art classes and lots more playing. Not too much re: academics (ABCs, etc). I did not enroll him again because the cost went up and he was ready for more academics.

hope this is helpful,

This has been a very helpful discussion, but I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with the Department of Parks & Rec Preschool Cooperative Play programs?  Any positive or negative experiences?

thanks!

What 12 did you apply to? I didn't even know there were 12 in the
neighbourhood.

Great idea! I've made a basic table that we can add programs too.

See:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PetworthParents/database?method=reportRows&tbl=2

Each Petworth Parent can edit the data or the table itself. Please feel free to
add more columns and more program examples.

I know that when I start to worry about pre-schools (seems I have a year) I'd
love to have a sheet like this & will definitely update it when I go through the
process.

My advice is to apply to as many schools as you think you might like.  It really is a matter of luck getting into the schools--especially the ones with lotteries.  Also don't panic if you don't get in right away.  Usually there is some movement on the waitlist later in the summer or the fall.  We applied to 12 schools for this year and got wait listed for every one in the lottery.  But we did get into a few over the summer and in the fall and we are very happy with the school our daughter attends.

Hello,
I am looking for a pre-school for my 2.5 year old daughter Skyler. Does anyone have any recommendations for Petworth schools? A bilingual program is a plus. I am considering LAMB when she turns three and then Haynes when she turns 4. I'll be going to open houses for each in January. Any comments on those or any others would be a great help.
Thanks, Darren Smith
