I'd appreciate a check of the 1841, 1851 and 1891 census for CHALMERS. There
are 2 households:
1) James Chalmers and his wife Janet Chalmers (I don't know their dates of
birth, but Ithey had a son James born about 1823/1825 and I think another son
William who was christened in Cambuslang, Lanark in 1834)
2) James Chalmers (abt. 1823/1825) and his wife Elizabeth Creighton (abt.
1826- abt. 1884). They were in Cowsrieve Croft, Longside, Peterhead in the
1881 Census, and had the following children (a partial list): Elizabeth (abt.
1850), James, (1851), Susan (1853), William C. (abt. 1857), Hugh (abt. 1865),
George (abt. 1868). Wade has already given me the 1851 information on this
younger James
Thank you so much!!!

Also, I purchased from the Aberdeen & NE Scotland FHS the following
Monumental Inscriptions booklets: Aberdour, Bourtie, Fyvie, New Deer,
Peterculter and St. Nicholas. If anyone wants me to check for a specific
name, let me know.

I tend to agree with Jim, that you must have missed some generations.

Hi Wade

Are you able to give me the death details of James DAVIDSON from the
Death Index?
Details from the Index are:
James DAVIDSON,
Born: 1782
Died: 1861.
Ref No 54.
Father: Alexander DAVIDSON.
Mother: WOOD

And I wonder if he and his wife, possibly Elizabeth are listed in the
1851 census at Errol St. (maybe 1/4 Errol St)
Is the 1841 census indexed or do we have to know the correct address.

Kind regards
Val Lowrie

Hi everyone,

I'm researching the ancestry of my gg-grandfather Robert DAVIDSON, born c
1823 in Peterhead according to the 1851 St. Fergus census. There doesn't
appear to be an OPRI/IGI record for his birth/christening. Robert married
Mary Massie CARDNO in St. Fergus in 1849, and was a farm labourer in 1851,
a crofter in 1881.

I wonder if anyone has this fellow in their Peterhead family group, or can
supply further details about his parents and siblings.

Thanks in advance.
John

Hi Wade. I wonder if you could see if there is record of James Stephen, born
May 15, 1805
who died May 20, 1887?

Much appreciated,

Hello. Would you mind checking the St. Nicholas and Peterculter monumental
inscriptions booklet for any with th surname STEPHEN? If there are several,
I'm particularly interested in James, born May 15, 1805 - died May 20, 1887;
Ann Cordiner, born Nov 22, 1806 - died July 22, 1891 and George Stephen
(James' father) of whom I have neither a birth or death date.

Thanks for your assistance.

Shelley Stephen

Glad to check! There are no STEPHEN's in the St. Nicholas/Prestwick MI's.
There are 6 in the Peterculter MI's, but none of them are those you're
seeking. Since you were particularly interested in these two sites, I've
summarized them below. Let me know if you need the full inscriptions for any
of them. I did not see any CORDINER's in either booklet.

1) Robert STEPHEN (abt. 1740-1821) & his wife Margaret (d. 1820) and their
children Martin, Alexander, John, William, James (abt. 1774-1851). Also
James' wife Ann Rust and their children John and Alexander
2) Margaret GLENNIE, wife of Robert STEPHEN (abt. 1881-1941)
3) 2 small STEPHEN-surnamed children of James THOMSON
4) Mary STEWART or STEPHEN (abt. 1835-1916)
5) James STEPHEN (abt. 1812-1904) & his wife Elizabeth JOHNSTON (abt.
1822-1861) and their children Elizabeth, Jean, Alexander F. and Christian
Skinner. Also his mother Isabella DAVIDSON
6) Barbara WATT, wife of George B. STEPHEN (abt. 1888-1918)

I looked in the other MI booklets as well, and the only mentions I found of a
George STEPHEN which could possibly fit the timeframes were in the New Deer
and Fyvie MI's. There were were 11 STEPHEN's in the New Deer MI's, including:

1) "In memory of George STEPHEN merchant Bank, Old Deer d. 22 Nov. 1862 aged
77, Isabell FOWLIE his spouse d. 8 Oct. 1845 aged 45. Their dau. Janet d. 1
Mar. 1839 aged 1, their son Alexander d. 27 Aug. 1848 aged 17"
2) "Erected by William STEPHEN in memory of his mother Margaret IRVINE d. 10
Aug. 1815 aged 85, his father George STEPHEN d. 11 Aug. 1820 aged 85 also of
his brother John d. 4? Sept. 18?? aged 7-" 4 lines text (stone flaked at
bottom)

The other STEPHENS mentioned in New Deer are: 3) John STEPHEN and his wife
Bella F. JOHNSTONE (abt. 1867-1888), 4) George STEPHEN (abt. 1849-1873), 5)
Isabella STEPHEN, wife of George FOWLIE (abt. 1827-1901), 6) Jean STEPHEN,
wife of William DAVIDSON (abt. 1774-1861), 7) Bathia STEPHEN, wife of James
BRANDY (b. 1779-1847), 8) James STEPHEN (abt. 1833-1906), 9) William STEPHEN
(abt. 1817-1883), 10) William STEPHEN (1803-1858) and 11) Elizabeth STEPHEN,
wife of James INNES (d. 1936). Let me know if you want more information on
any of these, as well.

There were also 11 STEPHEN's in Fyvie -- one was a possible match:

1) "Erected to the memory of George STEPHEN merchant Fyvie d. 1 Feb. 1853
aged 86; Ann WHITE his wife d. 13 July 1872 aged 82. Their sons William d. 9
Jully 1888 aged 68, George d. 22 Aug. 1903 aged 85. Their dau. Ann d. 14
Dec. 1920 aged 95"

The others are: 2) Margaret IRONSIDE, wife of Thomas STEPHEN (abt.
1767-1840), 3) Agnes STEPHEN, wife of William MEDRUM (abt. 1776-1820), 4)
Arthur STEPHEN (abt. 1781-1865) and his brother Thomas STEPHEN (d. 1861), 5)
James STEPHEN (abt. 1814-1861), 6) Barbra STEPHEN, wife of Alexander WESLEY
(abt. 1802-1875), 7) Elizabeth STEPHEN, wife of John SIMPSON (abt.
1822-1900), 8) George STEPHEN (d. 175?), 9) William STEPHEN (abt. 1765-1832),
10) Mary STEPHEN, "relict" of William CRAN (abt. 1773-1862) and 11) James
STEPHEN (abt. 1837-1907)

Let me know if you want details on any of them. Good luck!

Hello, my first message.Re. 161, 162.

I believe Eliza Stevenson must be the daughter of Capt.George Simpson and Jane
Innes.born Peterhead,1827.Her brother Alexander Simpson married Christian Ewen
in 1858.Hence , one can see the naming of her children.
My interests are to find the father of the above George Simpson born Peterhead
1797 died Peterhead 1848 ,mother Margaret Buchan born Peterhead about 1775, died
Peterhead 1819.
Any help would be most helpful.
Malcolm.

For Malcolm Simpson

Malcolm, I was interested to read your note about George Simpson and your
efforts to find his father.
He is not in my family tree, but I have a general interest in Peterhead
shipmasters of that era. I also have not been successful in finding his father,
but I have really only tried the OPR index so far. It could be that he was not
from Peterhead....or he was of another religious denomination (possibly
Episcopalian).
I do have some bits of information which (if you don't know them already) may be
of interest to you :

1) George Simpson was buried on September 11th.1848 (aged 50)
Jane Innes (his wife) was buried on May 18th.1876 (aged 77)
(She died on May 15th.1876 at 25 St.Andrews Street, Peterhead, her parents
being William Innes (Blacksmith) & Margaret Sharp ...Ref.Death
Certificate
          232 Entry 90).
Margaret Buchan (his mother) was buried on March 9th.1819 (aged 44).
They are all in Lair C387 of South Road Cemetery, Peterhead.
No sign of George Simpson's father there....if he was also a sea-faring man
he could have been lost at sea.
2) George Simpson was a witness at the baptisms of two of John Martin's children
in 1819 and 1820. John Martin (also a shipmaster) was my ancestor. So they must
have been good friends....if not, in some way, related.
3) You probably know that George Simpson was the Captain of the whaler
"Perseverence" and sailed in her on the seasons 1821, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825,
1826, 1827 and 1828.

George Mitchell(Shipmaster) was baptised 24 Apr 1808 in Aberdeen by Bishop
Skinner in the presence of Alex Hall, Shipbuilder and Robert Bruce,
Shipowner. His father was William Mitchell and mother, Sarah Sangster
(married I believe in Peterhead 12 Feb 1804) I'm looking for any information
about William & Sarah, where they lived and when they died. Perhaps anyone
working on SHROUD may have the some details. Can anyone help please?

To Alex. Richie.
Good to hear from you and to find some sort of connection.
I already have the information you have shown about George Simpson but his
father and any siblings are unknown so far. Thankyou for your help.
Leading on from the baptism witness piece, I find that John Martin was witness
to my own g.Grandfather, Alexander Simpson in 1834 along with a George Milne.
The only marriage I can find is between Andrew Simpson and Elizabeth Martin
27/11/1828.
I don't know whether she is one of your Martins or he one of my Simpsons.
Interesting too that George Simpson had the next lair C388 which contains
Catherine Martin buried 28 Sept. 1861 aged 46 of Queen Street also six young
Martin children buried between 1862 and 1894.
Possibly there could be a Buchan connection through George Simpson's mother
Margaret?
Hope you find this of some interest and keep in touch.
Best regards,
Malcolm Simpson.

Not sure if this is the same James, but it is the only one close to that
age in Peterhead.

District 1, page 5, No.4, Union Street
James Davidson, head, mar, 69, Clerk, Peterhead
Ann Davidson, wife, mar, 72, Peterhead
Elizabeth Davidson, daur, unmar, 35, Peterhead

As far as I know, the 1841 census as not been indexed. You would need
to go through the whole lot, but knowing an address at that time would
help.

I have photocopies of an article "William Penny, 1809-92: Arctic Whaling
Master" by Clive A. Holland and some pages of family tree by a
researcher (can't remember who). If you would like copies of these
please let me know your address.

Question for Carl (who I know will be reading this), is Carolyn Rhodes
researching this same William Penny? Someone on the old Fidonet in New
Zealand was researching Capt. William Penny, do you remember who it was?

I assume you have Eliza Stevenson and family from the 1881 census. If
you don't let me know. I didn't see an Eliza Stevenson or Simpson born
about 1827 in the 1851 census for Peterhead.

> My interests are to find the father of the above George Simpson born
> Peterhead 1797 died Peterhead 1848

This might help, only two Simpson families in the 1801 census for
Peterhead.

St.Peters Lane, No. House 383, Name of Principal Tenant: Alexander
Simpson, two families in the house, 5 males and 3 females.

Aughtigall, No.House 147, Name of Principal Tenant: Isabel Simpson, one
family, one female.

Do you have Jane in the 1851 census?

,mother Margaret Buchan born Peterhead about 1775, died Peterhead 1819.

The other suggestion could be to look at the Peterhead OPR deaths (I
will have a look, next time I get a chance) as it could give Margaret
Buchan late wife of .........
or look for a headstone, since you know the lair number.

Regards, Wade.

G'day Wade

You're right, I might be quiet but I am always there lurking in the
background. It's not Carolyn but it is Betty Mathers who has the
connections to Capt. W. Penny. I haven't heard from her in quite some
time, I have sent her Fido messages through my internet connection with
Tardis BBS but to no avail.

Providing she hasn't moved her address in NZ is:

96 Raumanga Heights Drive
Whangarei
Northland
New Zealand.

I got loads of info off her some time back when we were trying to
connect my Christian Penny to the William Penny line. I still think
there might be a connection but as yet no proof.

Regards,

Carl.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for your note.
I think you're pretty close to the mark in suggesting that the "Buchan"
connection may be the common denominator between George Simpson & John Martin.
John Martin married Jean Buchan in 1802. Jean's parents were George Buchan
(Harbour Pilot) and Margaret Innes. Could your Margaret Buchan be a sister of
Jean Buchan ?

With reference to Lair 388 in South Road Cemetery, this also re-inforces the
possibility of a connection. For example,
1) In the Lair are Alexander Martin, Margaret-Jane Martin, James McLean Martin
and John Martin (all children of George Martin & Christina Massie - my
great-great grandparents). This George Martin is the grandson of the above John
Martin & Jean Buchan.
2) Alexandrina Martin was the daughter of Alexander Martin & Margaret Mair. This
Alexander Martin is the brother of George Martin in (1) above.
3) Catharine Martin (nee Hutchison) was the wife of George Gordon Martin who was
the son of the above John Martin & Jean Buchan.
4) Robert & Matilda Herriot (or Harriot) were the children of George Herriot and
Jane Martin. Jane Martin was the daughter of John Martin & Jean Buchan.

So, if you are still following this convoluted note !! there must be a definite
connection..........this is real exciting !
Please keep in touch..............Kindest Regards.................Alex Ritchie

Hi Alex,
Yes, there must be a definite connection between Margaret Buchan and
Jean Buchan;there is also a Helen Buchan in Lair C387 buried 1843 aged 66,
another sister?
Your convoluted family picture I can follow; these outside names in a Simpson
lair puzzled me greatly especially the name Harriet but with your Herriot
connection it now makes sense. I have now to find who Sophia and Daniel Ross,
Sophia R. Watson and Archibald Davidson were inlair C388!
In your first message you state your interest in Peterhead shipmasters
well I have a puzzle you may be able to help me with.George Simpson had three
sons who went to sea, John b.1826 George b. 1828 and my g.Grandfather Alexander
b. 1834.I can follow much of the career of George and Alexander both of whom
became certificated shipmasters but John is a mystery.
There is a John Simpson seamans cert.no. 114275 but Certificates of Competency
were not mandatory when he may have become a Master.
On 14th.July 1858 Alexander lost his first command, the "Eclipse" in the Davis
Straits and a Captain John Simpson lost the "Heroine" ,of Dundee on the same day
in the same position, were they brothers? J.Simpson was also Master of the
"Union" in 1859 and "Agostina" in 1860,both of Peterhead. Was this John Simpson
brother of George and Alexander ?
Interest is mounting,keep in touch.
Best Regards,
Malcolm Simpson.

Malcolm, thanks for your latest note.
I don't know the exact connection with Daniel Ross (and his wife Sophia Fyfe).
The Daniel Ross in Lair C388 would probably be a grandson. However, I do have a
Peterhead OPR entry for September 19th.1822 : "Daniel Ross (sailor in Peterhead)
had a daughter Helen baptised. Witnesses : George Simpson & John Martin". Again
I guess a close friendship possibly based upon sailing together. Daniel Ross and
John Martin both lived in the Roanheads.
Sophia Ross died on August 8th.1876 at 70 Roanheads "widow of Daniel Ross" but I
have not tracked down a death certificate for her husband. He may have died at
sea ?
Can't help you so far with Sophia Watson and Archibald Davidson in Lair C388.

I do have an interest in Peterhead shipmasters but did not want to give you the
impression that I was in some way "expert" on the subject. I became fascinated
by the way the various families inter-married.
The only thing I have is that John Simpson (aged 9) in Lair C388 was the son of
John Simpson (Shipmaster) and Helen Scott. Death Cert.Ref. : 232 (Entry 35).
The John Simpson (aged 2 months) in Lair C388 was the son of Alexander Simpson
and Christian Ewen (as you probably know).

MY personal dilemma is that I can find no burial records for John Martin (my
Great Great Grandfather) nor his father John Martin (my Great Great Great
Grandfather who was married to Jean Buchan). It's very likely they were both
lost at sea but I cannot find any evidence to that effect. I do know that Jean
Buchan was a widow by 1841 Census and that John Martin (the younger) wife
(Margaret Watt) was a widow by the 1851 Census. But other than that I can't
narrow the window down.

Kindest Regards...........................Alex Ritchie

Hi Alex,
Received your latest for which many thanks. As usual a little more light has
been shed on my ancestry by your local knowledge. I can't help you with your
John Martins'.Deaths at sea were not well recorded until later years, seamen
being very expendable. If you read Basil Lubbocks "Artic Whaling" you can get a
good idea of which ships were lost each year and their home port, but very
little more than the names of Masters. The only people I can think of who
possibly would know more about these matters are Alex.R. Buchan who has written
such alot about Peterhead and is a resident and David Dobson who has written
extensively about Scots mariners. All I can say is keep digging.
Best Regards,Malcolm.

Hello Alex,
Received your latest OK. I inherited my Basil Lubbock from my Father and
am very fond of it but unless you have a great interest in the whaling trade I
would not purchase it.Have a look at it in your local reference library if
possible, there are quite a lot of statistics and I find it fascinating.
Back to the Martins -- John Martin was witness to my g.Grandfather's
baptism 21st.Nov. 1834 and I have Geoge Martin witness to Helen Simpson 3rd.Nov.
1836. Were they brothers?George Milne and John Murray keep cropping up as
witnesses too; any idea whom they might be?
Interesting fact in most of these births was a November arrival --- this
must be because of the dates of departure of the whaling fleet!!
Hope you find this of some interest.

Best Regards,
                     Malcolm.

I am pretty interested if it has that kind of information.

Hi Alex,
< You ask whether Lubbock's book contains much about the actual whaling

The answer is "not really"; there are some wonderful extracts from personal

trade. I wouldn't be without mine!
