Shona,

Surprised you received no reply as this query has already been pased to me
emananting from a gentleman in Aberdeen who was also related to Andrew Duthie.
As a result, he attended a presenation in the village hall that featured a
number of old photgraphs and postcards- email me off list and I will give you
all the information I have

William Yule was my g-g-grandfather , he had a brother John born 1842,
father John Yule , 1813 and mother Isabella Knox, 1815. Any help
finding living descendants of John Yule would be appreciated. William
went to America in 1870, he was a blacksmith. That's about all I've got
so far.
Thanks, Magyule

Peterhead, d 19Sept1918. Parents were Joseph Reid (a carter/horse

connection, but would love to hear from anyone who may have some info.

For Chick :

Chick, I only have the following information on Alexander Mathew. You
probably know this already :

ALEXANDER MATHEW
Born : c1830
Owned 3/64 shares in the vessel "Helen H"
owned 2/64 shares in the "Theseus" of London
Died : May 16th.1876 at Sea (Master of the "Theseus")
(Death Certificate : 020/MR (143))

There was a Thomas Mathew in Peterhead who was a boat builder, would
that have been his brother ?

For Chick :

Chick, the Death Certificate for Alexander Mathew doesn't have much
detail on it.
It says he died on May 16th.1876, and the THESEUS arrived back in port
on September 11th.1876. So presumably he has buried at sea.
The cause of death is given as "unrecorded"

My uncle, David Ritchie, was married to Betty Birkett. Latterly they
lived in Loughborough (England). My uncle is now deceased but Betty
still lives down there.
She has brothers, Tommy, Harold & George who all still live in
Peterhead (as far as I know).
Don't know anything about the Birketts further back than that. I'll try
and find out if my mother knows any more about them.

I can remember Birketts who lived in Forman Drive during the 1960s. I
think that was Harold. There were at least 2 sons who I think were
Harold and David. I guess the sons would now be around 50. For some
reason, I seem to have it in my head that they had ginger hair.

I've got some more recent information on the descendants of my g-
grandfather's brother. John YUle b. 1843 married Jane Cowe had 6
children, one of which was Duncan Campbell Yule b. 8, Nov. 1872 in
Longside. they seemed to go from Peterhead to Longside and back again.
Duncan married Jessie (haven't found maiden name) and they had 2 sons,
Alex John Yule b. 1899 in Peterhead and Charles S Yule b. 1901 also in
Peterhead. These two sons would have been cousins to my father, William
Alan Yule b. 1908 in Indianapolis Indiana. Everyone seemed to be named
either William or John so I'm hoping Duncan might stand out a bit.
Thanks,
Maggi

Hi,

I am very new to this and so very frustrated trying to find information on
family so after reading your posts for some time now I thought maybe someone
here might be able to steer me in the right direction. I don't just want to
know their names and birthdates etc, I want to know what life was like for
them, what happened to John Snr, what made them come to Australia etc. I
know this is a big job but now that I have started, I feel these were my
family and I need to know something about them. Anyway, off my soapbox now
and I will give you some info on them.

My Great Grandfather John Johnston Born Peterhead 1852 to John Johnston born
Scotland and Mary Lane born Ireland with both born around 1820. From their
entry into Australia, there was Mary with children Matilda, Margaret,
William and John. I have found them in the 1851 and 1861 Census living in 9
Union Street Peterhead. No mention of John Snr either time but Mary listed
as seamans wife and another daughter Mary but she was not listed as coming
to Australia. And it also says that all the children except William were
born in Peterhead. Young Mary was born 1842 and young John 1852 so there is
a 10 year period there that they were in Peterhead.

I cannot find anything on births, marriage or deaths on any of the family.
I have found their passage to Australia in Oct 1863 on the Severn but Mary
came as a widow with 4 children one of which was John my GGrandfather.
It looks like John Snr died somewhere between 1852 and 1863. He is listed
on John Jnr Marriage Certificate as a Master Mariner but as yet still cant
find anything on that either. Any help would be really appreciated and I
hope I have not waffled on too much.

Regards
Carol

Hi Carol,
What part of Australia? did your family go to.

I could only find these two entries regarding John and Mary Johnston as
witnesses to, two baptisms.

William Mitchell, Seaman in Peterhead
annd Jane Johnston his wife a dau Elizabeth
born 19th March 1854 bap 24th April 1854
beofre John Johnston and Mary Lane

William Mitchell, Seaman in Peterhead
and Jean Robertson his wife a dau Jane
born 24th Feb 1852 bap 1st March 1852
before John and Mrs Johnston.

I'll keep looking and see what I can find.
Why did your family come to Australia, probably the same as my parents,
a different way of life and perhaps economicaly better.

Best wishes,

Dear Carol and Others,

I was interested in your reference to the Peterhead Episcopal Records.

My ancestor James LOVIE gives his place of birth on the 1851 census as
Peterhead. There is also a John LOVIE living in St Cyrus who also gives his
place of birth as Peterhead.

While there is a possible entry in the Longside Parish records for James
LOVIE, this James LOVIE was born at Mains of Buthlaw in 1803; I cannot find
a record of the birth or baptism of John LOVIE.

I am assuming that John LOVIE was born sometime around 1800. How would I
find out if his birth or baptism were recorded in the Episcopal Church at
Peterhead?

Regards,

Christine

Dear All,

I am also interested in a Thomas MATTHEW. I don’t know if there is any
connection but this Thomas MATTHEW married a Marjory FRASER in Fraserburgh
in 1792.

As a witness to the baptism of Isobel Ritchie FRASER in Fraserburgh in 1815
there is a Robert MATTHEW.

Possibly a co-incidence but who knows.

To Keith, Catherine, Alex and Christine

Keith thank you for the Map and link to electricscotland, very interesting
reading, gives me information on what times were like then and I checked on
the map to see where the streets were and what the town was like.

Catherine my family settled in NSW around the Annandale/Glebe area. I know
they stayed in that area, I remember a little bit but not much and those
that would remember have passed now so I have no one to ask. I kick myself
everyday for leaving it so long to do this.

Alex, thank you too for the info on the Episcopal records but where the heck
did you find it, I have been looking for months and not able to find
anything, although not sure about the John think that was too early for him.
John was 23 on Wedding Papers in Aust 1875, could understand if it was a few
years but not 10 although I have found anything seems to be possible. I am
wondering if John died at an early age and they used the same name for my
GGrandfather. Are the Episcopal records available for research? Anyway
will plod along but should you find anymore I would be most thankful. Oh
and the William was absolutely correct, I had a second look on the shipping
paper I have and he was born in Glasgow 1850.

Christine, I have no idea about the Episcopal records but am looking for
them too, they would be very handy.

I have waffled way too much again.

For Carol Tate :

Hi Carol,
I saw the Peterhead Episcopal Records at the Aberdeen & N.E. F.H.S. on
King Street, Aberdeen. Someone had transcribed them and they were there
on "hard copy", but they only covered 1820 - 1850 if I remember
correctly.
I copied some of them, as I was interested in Peterhead Shipmasters.

It's quite possible that the original JOHN died and that they used the
name subsequently for another child. I have encountered this several
times in my researches.

Hi Listers

Can any tell me the name of the Peterhead cemetery, am working again
on my ancestors from this area.

I am interested in James Robertson,(my 2nd great grandfather) bc
1816, died bef, 1861, he was a ships carpenter and married Ann Smith
b Sept 1817 in Portessie.

Am trying to track down where James and others from Peterhead may
have been buried.

James and Ann had 7 children, their daughter Jane b 1849 died 8 march
1908, was my great grandmother, she married John Lawrence May from
Inverallochy.

Also, if anyone has connections to the above would love to hear from
you.

Hello to all,

My name is Andrew Bristow. While writing this beofre work here is
Sydney, Australia, I realise I do not have my notes with dates etc so
I am working somewhat through memory.

I am the great grandson of Arthur George Bristow who married a
Lilias Gray of Peterhead in 1901. My great grandfather was involved
in some construction work on a wharf in Peterhead around 1895.

Lily was descended from Capt David Gray who was born in South
Shields. I think shhe is the fourth generation of that family and the
daughter of the second marriage by her father.

Any information relating to the family, pictures etc would be
appreciated. I will send more detials shortly.

I am also indirectly interested in the Stephen family. My great
Grandfathers brother Thomas Hamer Bristow married a Mabel Stephen in
1912. Presumably after an introductionby his brother or sister in
law. His grandson Jeremy lives in Bristol and would also like to
hear of any information etc. I am expecting some photos from him and
will post these.

Many thanks

Hi Maureen,

There are two - the old kirk yard next to the bay,
and a newer one - can't remember the name sorry. I
think maybe James might be in the old kirkyard. I have
ancestors who died around this time in there.

I hope this is of some help.

It's sometimes called the old kirk yard, or St Peter's - I think
there was a St Peter's church originally (=Peterhead).

I've recently visited Peterhead and went to the registrar's office
for help with finding graves. She was extremely helpful, especially
considering we just walked in off the street. For the fee of 10
pounds she looked up people in indexes, gave me photocopies of the
layout of the cemetery (ie lairs and numbers), and photocopies of the
relevant pages from the registers. These are useful as the date of
burial and address of the deceased is recorded - good for deaths before 1855.

We had been looking round the cemetery beforehand and realised we
wouldn't find anything without help, and she also told us where
different rows were in relation to cemetery features. With this help
we located several graves and sites, even though some didn't have stones.

I got the impression she would answer mail queries - this is right
number and email address I think.

Hello Maureen;

The two cemeteries in Peterhead are the old one, St Peter's where the
ancient St Peter's church was, and the newer Constitution Street Cemetery
which is used today.

Regards

William Leslie

Also, if anyone has connections to the above would love to hear from
you.

Regards

Hi Elizabeth,

I was interested to note that you are researching Murrisons of
Peterhead. I wonder if your Murrisons are connected to mine.

My g-g-grandfather George Murrison, a weaver, was born in Fraserburgh
about 1787. He married Margaret McCombie, born in Fraserburgh about
1786. They were married in Peterhead on 12/11/1820 and seem to have
lived in Peterhead from then on. Their children Susan (b abt 1824)
and George (b abt 1829) were both born in Peterhead. At the 1841 and
1851 censuses they were at Ellis Street in Peterhead. Margaret died
at 10 Ellis Street in 1859 and George died at 75 Kirk Street in 1863.
Susan worked as a domestic servant until she married Andrew Clarke
Chalmers, a shoemaker, in 1860. On her marriage certificate, Susan's
surname is given as Murison, but in the same document her parents'
names are recorded as Murrison. Even if your Murrisons are not
related to mine, it may be worth your while researching alternative
spellings of the name.

While we are discussing church records, does anybody know anything
about records of the Methodist Church in Peterhead? Many of my
Peterhead ancestors were Methodists, and I am wondering if this is
why I have quite often been unable to find records of pre-1855 births
and marriages in the OPR database at ScotlandsPeople. Would the
Methodist church records be preserved anywhere? Have they been
transcribed?

Hello Maureen,

There are actually four cemeteries in Peterhead:

1) The "Old Kirkyard" or St Peters Kirkyard. This is the oldest
and certainly has graves back in the 1700s, possibly even the 1600s. It
is located on the South Road and can be an absolutely beautiful and
peaceful setting when the sun is shining over the bay. There are still a
few burials there but only into existing lairs. It was very active in
the 1800s and early 1900s.

2) Constitution St is the next in chronological order. It is
located in the town and is bordered by Station Road and Landale Road. It
is still quite active but again only into existing lairs.

3) Balmoor is next and is located where was then the outskirts of
the town but has long since been absorbed by urban spread. I believe it
was opened either in the 1950s or early 1960s. It is active but I think
all available lairs are taken.

4) Grange is the newest and I think dates from the 1990s. All new
lairs are in this cemetery. It is located close to Balmoor and next to
Robert Mackie's funeral hall. It only has its first area in use at the
moment but there is further land reserved there for, I have heard, 50
years.

Regards,

Roy

For Mary Barnes

Mary,
The Peterhead Methodist Church Records are held at the Aberdeen
City Archives. I understand that these include baptismal registers 1815
to 1992.
You would have to contact them to find out exactly which location
has these records, because they have various physical locations where
records are kept. (It's not just one central repository).

Hi

I believe that the Methodist Church records at the National Archives of
Scotland in Edinburgh. The dates vary greatly from place to place, and
are closed for 60 years. They contain lists of members and seat
holdersand are arranged alphabetically by place.
