Hi,

Microfilm is available in both Peterhead Library and also the Central Aberdeen
Library, Local Studies Section, for the Buchan Observer. There is also
microfilm of the Aberdeen Journal (from 1747) and other newspapers, some of
which dedicated a column or two to news from local towns throughout
Aberdeenshire. Requests for information & lookups (there is a nominal charge for
this) can certainly be made to the Central Aberdeen Library (or if you live
within reach you can do the research yourself).

www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ACCI/web/site/Libraries/NS/LocalStudies.asp

e-mail: centrallibrary@...

As far as I am aware the paper started in 1863. It was also known as the East
Aberdeenshire Observer from Oct. 1875 - Dec. 1877.

What names & dates are you looking for? There may already be others within the
group with the information that you are looking for.

There is varying amount of information that may or may not be written about
someone when they married or died. Sometimes you will find nothing on someone
well known and sometimes you will find a death notice for someone described as a
pauper on their death certificate. You will need dates for the life happenings
that you are looking for, otherwise you are literally looking for a needle in a
haystack.

In attempting to crack brick walls I wonder if the early newspapers
for Peterhead are any help? Does anyone have knowledge of these? I
realise any obits would be in the main for well-known people but would
these include local tradesmen? Anything useful at all?
   TIA

Many thanks Alison, Ray & Carolyn for your help. No chance of
getting to Scotland for me I'm afraid. You have given me good
information to consider. There are 3 people at the moment I am
researching without success. As Alison suggested, someone may know
something.

know something.

They are George MILNE bc1782 Peterhead according to the 1851 census.
He married Ann GREIG, was a cooper, & died at Keith-inch (or was
buried) 17 Feb 1853 in Lair A345.

Also John MURRAY, a linnen hand loom weaver, who was down as 61 on
the 1841 census, so born c1780 Aberdeenshire. He died or was buried
18 Sep 1847 at Maiden st. Peterhead & was buried Lair E55 St Peter;s
Kirkyard. He married (1) Jean MILNE & (2) Ann MURRAY. Ann died 16
May 1876 & was the dau of Alexandr MURRAY from Crimond & his wife
Jane ms PENNEY. I am interested though in information on the first
wife Jean MILNE. She died/was buried 10 Nov 1823.

Otherwise I would consider a researcher. I cannot think of any other
areas to search. There is so little in the church records & they are
too early for certificates.

Cheers,
Marion

Hi Folks,

I seem to have run up against a brick wall in trying to establish
the date of birth of my gg grandfather JAMES CORDINER (c1820 - 23
Sep 1896) and would greatly appreciate some help in trying to find
his actual birth date.

James parents were ALEXANDER CORDINER (c1790 - 1842) and CHRISTIAN
CORDINER (1791 - 1867). He had eleven known siblings who were all
born at Boddam or Peterhead.

James married JANE ROBERTSON (c1821 - 11 Jun 1907) at Peterhead on
23 Nov 1843. They had 6 known children... James 1845, Alexander
1847, William c1850, Isabella c1852, Robertson 1854 and John 1856.

If you have any knowledge of the above individuals I would certainly
appreciate hearing from you.

Cheers

Hello,

The IGI has a James Cordiner, son of Alexander. baptised 3rd July 1827 in
Peterhead. Bearing in mind that children were not always baptised until some
considerable time after their birth, could this be the one you are looking for?

Regards,

Jen

Catherine's request for off-line contact prompts me to try my earlier post again
so everyone gets it without having to go to Yahoo. I seldom check Yahoo groups
out but I appreciate the Peterhead emails. I think that as far as possible we
should conduct discussions online because you never know who may share a
particular interest.

Hi there Steve,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we are related through Janet and
Christian. I would certainly be interested in info on Janet
Cordiners side of the family. She certainly seems to have a large
number of descendants.

I do have some info already and have contacted you direct so that we
might sift through the common data we both have, and then we can fill
in the gaps on our respective research.

Hi Ken,

Apologies for the silence. I am under pressure at work so I'll probably only
get to think about this on the weekend. I have a photo of Janet Cordiner which
I will scan and share with you if you are interested.

Cheers for the moment.

Does anyone have an Isabella ALLAN who died 3 October 1822 at Peterhead in their
family tree? She was married to John SMITH, a school master in Peterhead.
Cheers

I am looking for informaton on a William MURRAY, weaver, Peterhead,
having children c1800. There is also a William MURRAY, a Militiaman,
just after that time. Could they be one & the same man? Assuming
that militia means a local group & not regular army. There seems to
be a group of chn at the beginning of the 1800s, then a gap to the
next decade. Either another William or a second wife perhaps. Anyone
with any idea please?
TIA,
Marion

Hi,

Thanks for this. I think this William is too old, but may be
connected anyway, the same church was used later. I am stuck with
the usual problem of having usually no wife named & that dreadful
gap to 1841 & worse, 1855+, most of even the chn seem to have died
by then. I am happy to collect as many possibles as there are, in
an attempt to sort them out somehow. There is no chn William to this
couple I see, unless they had others elsewhere.
Cheers,
Marion

Hi Marion,
This is what I found.
Yes there is a William Murray in the early 1800'a a weaver, and as a tanner:
eg
18 Oct 1814 William Murray, Tanner in Peterhead a son William
witnesses Peter Leslie and George Stirling

Perhaps this is the William (baby) married in the 1840's.
eg
William Murray, Shoemaker in Peterhead and Mary Frazer
his wife a dau Elizabeth Frazer born 13 June 1845
in fornication and baptised 12 Aug 1845
before Andrew Frazer and Allan Morgan

This is the rest of the entires I found.

11 Feb 1819 William Murray a son George
wit Robert Ross and Alexander Skene

(about this time there are entries for an Alexander Skene.
One is a Captain in the 4th R.V.R. Damhead and one as a
Carpenter. This might be the conection for the militiaman)

21 March 1816 William Murray a dau Elizabeth
wit Alexander Skene and John Chisholm

On an earlier date with Murray's as occupation as a weaver,
in Peterhead

10 Sept 1777 William Murray, Weaver a son bap James
12 Sept 1779 William Murray, Weaver a dau bap Margaret
17 June 1775 William Murray, Weaver a dau bap Anne

Catherine

Hi Catherine,

Many thanks for these. I have found a William MURRAY who married a
Grace (or Grizzel) BRUCE, & another who married an Elizabeth BODDY.
The William/Grace pair did live into the census/certs period but
have found only a dau, Grace, so far.
Somehow I don't think he is the weaver.

Also it seems a jump from weaving to tanning, quite a pleasant
occupation to an unpleasant one, would that be likely? Maybe two
Williams. The witnesses are a help. Couldn't find a William a
weaver in 1841. FreeCEN had a bit of a hissy fit when I tried it
with MURRAY! And yet there doesn't appear to be too many of them in
Peterhead.
Every scrap helps!
Cheers,
Marion
