Hi Steve

In April 2004 Eileen was using this email: eilgen.lothian@...

I've no idea if it is still valid: I just looked in my back-up files.

My grandfather's mother was Eliza Fraser Craighead,
born in Peterhead 1839 or 1842 & listed as domestic
servant. Her parents were William Craighead, farmer, &

Hi Marion, how are you.
I only found one of the names you stated, Alexander but I looked on the IGI and
for Alexander Milne born 1826 the father was George Milne. Here's what Ancestry
had.

5-2-1826 George Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a son Alexander. witness Thomas
Philip and George Simpson.

11-5-1828 George Milne, Cooper in Peterheaed a son George. witness John Souttar
and John Gray

29-4-1821 George Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a dau Isabella. witness John Thom
and William Mitchell

23-11-1823 George Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a son John. witness John Souttar
and Thomas Philip

10-9-1816 George Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a dau Janet. witness James Simpson
and Alexander Skene

4-4-1819 George Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a son George. witness William
Mitchell and John Souttar
**********************
Geroge Milne was also witness to other families children, eg.

Robert Allan, Cooper in Peterhead
George Watt, Cooper in Peterhead

30-6-1822 Andrew Milne, Cooper in Peterhead a dau Elizabeth. witness George
Milne and William Mitchell

13-11-1825 Andrew Milne, late Cooper in Peterhead a son William. witness George
Milne and William Mitchell.
(Andrew might be a brother to George, both being Coopers)

William Mitchell witness on some of the entries was also a Cooper in Peterhead.

Hope this helps a bit.
Best wishes,
Catherine

   Hi Catherine,

Thanks again for your help. I am awash with MILNE's & threatening to sink!
Alexander was born Peterhead 1826. His brother Peter was born 1809, William was
born 1810, George was born 1829. I believe William, Peter & George may have died
as infants or young. Alex was bro-in-law to William ABERNETHY, shipmaster, born
c1809. Another brother John, I have located. There was also a family interest
in a brig called 'Eliza.'
   Cheers,
   Marion

   Hi Marion, Catherine here.
I looked on Ancestry, there were three Alexander Milne's that I typed in as
Merchants since you said, shop.
Alexander Milne married to Margaret Cowie, Alexander B. Milne married to
Jessie Gibson, Alexander Minle married to Elizabeth Ross.
There's an Alexander Milne a Mason.
   Are one of these yours.
I can send you some details if you know which one.

   For Marion :

   Hi Marion,
In case you don't have this information, I can tell you
that Ann Milne (presumably "your" Alexander Milne's sister) was the daughter of
George Milne (Cooper) & Ann Greig. Ann Milne married William Abernethy on August
13th.1833, she died on January 1st.1861 (Aged 45) and is buried in Lair A344 of
the Old Cemetery. Her death certificate reference is 232 Entry 2.
William Abernethy subsequently re-married. He was Master of the ELIZA of
Aberdeen according to the 1851 Crew Lists.

Hi Catherine & thanks again. Yes that is the one. I am a bit bewildered about
all these coopers, as witnesses, obviously friends if not relatives. I am
tracking from information in Wills so going back & forwards. There is a
grandchild with Mitchell as a middle name so perhaps some relationship there.
But perhaps they are all related, there are enough MILNEs!
Cheers,

Hi Ted, Catherine here.
On the IGI there are two children born to Keith Forbes Milne and Christian
Brown, John 1859 and Robert Kidd 1857.
If these are your Milne's, Keith was still alive after 1855 and so his death
cert should be at Scotlandspeople.

I had a look on Ancestry, there was nothing in Peterhead for Keith Forbes Milne,
or anywhere else.
There was entries for Milne's with a Keith Milne as a witness to the baptisms
and the men who he was witness to were seamen.
You can have these entries if you wish.
Hope this helps a bit,
Best wishes,
Catherine

PIRIEs and ELRICKs are confounding me also! Just wondering whether
you've unearthed anything since you posted your message?

The James PIRIE and Anne ELRICK you mention were 4th Great-Grandparents

Unfortunately, James and Anne are among my brick walls ... but if I can
assist with William's (above) descendants please let me know.

Any connection likely?

Subject: REUNION - HENDERSON FAMILY OF NEW DEER, LONGSIDE, PETERHEAD AND ELLON, ABERDEENSHIRE, SCOTLAND
micraybro
Send Email Send Email

My gggrandparents were George Henderson and Margaret Allan. I have tentatively
identified eight children, born between 1777 (in New Deer) and 1800 (in
Longside). My branch is descended from a George Henderson and Jane Mitchell,
with many branches of that family migrating to Australia, from Ellon.

In June, I will be back in Aberdeen, and am trying to contact as many other
descendants of the George Henderson/Margaret Allan family that may be around.
Already we have made contact with 2 branches of children to my George & Jane,
and who did not come to Australia, and one branch of a sibling to George & Jane.

Tentative date would be the morning of Tues, June 28, meeting in the morning,
and having lunch together. I have no big plans, but just taking the opportunity
to perhaps find some other family contacts, and swap notes. Depending on numbers
we can then select a place to meet. However, as my playground is Sydney, I would
welcome any suggestions as to a suitable place to meet.

For details of my family, please see my website
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/r/o/Michael-Brock-Baulkham-Hills/in\
dex.html , and if you see any connection, and might be interested in attending
the reunion, please let me know. I know it is a bit late - like 150 years or so
- but better late than never.

Best Regards

Michael Brock (nee Henderson)

Hi Elizabeth, Catherine here, how are you.
On the IGI is a daughter for Alexander Bruce and Grace Robertson.
Catherine Bruce born abt 1817 in Longside. Death 28th Nov 1876.

If you go onto Scotlandspeople you will be able to get a copy of her death
certificate.
On it will be whom she married. You might be lucky and find other info other
than her husband a and parents names, also you can get a copy of her marriage
certificate, if she married.

If you are near a Mormon's Family Library you could order in the OPR film for
Peterhead, perhaps Alexander and Grace had more children in Peterhead before
they moved to Longside. You could order in the Longside OPR and perhaps find
more children on it.

Best wishes,
Catherine

Hi Catherine,
Thank you for your reply, and doing well thank you. I have been able to
find 3 of Alexander & Grace's children, 1 of them (William) my 2X gr granda.
I have his death cert. What I am trying to trace is Alexander and/or Grace.
If I find one, it could lead me to the other. I have found a few
Alexander's births in Longside, but the birth years are questionable. The
latest being in the 1760's.They were married in 1801 according to the IGI.
Would the OPR film give more information than what they show on the IGI?
eg. names of their parents? Whew! :)
Thanks again, Betty

In the 1830's and 40's would it have been common to have ONLY
father's
name listed in baptisms and births? I have a family with 9 children,
with 6 of them having only the father's name listed. The other 3 were
found with both both parents. I have run all 9 through the IGI.
Hope someone can answer this question for me.

Hi Betty,

I certainly have run into this same situation. Without a Mother's full name you
cannot be absolutely certain that you have the correct family. What I have done
to prove the children "belong" is to search the childrens names on the
Scotland's People web-site for marriages or deaths. The details from those
certificates should give you full names of each parent.

You also could try to locate the family on the 1851 Census as some of the
younger children could have been living at home.

Good luck.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your reply.
The 9 children I have are definitely from the same family. I had
received a listing of the births and Christenings of these 9 children, thus
my question arose. 3 of the children show both mother & father, the other 6
only the father. I checked the 1841 census and found 2 of the children born
before 1841 were not living at home. 1 was 5 yrs of age, and 1 was 8. I
think my 2X grt granda may have been a bit of a scamp? :)
Again, thanks for your reply and your help.
Betty

Hi'
I have found this quite common in the north/east registrations. Some of the
registrars seemed only to put in the fathers name.

For Betty :

My experience has been that, for Parish Record Births etc., it very much
depended upon which Parish (and Minister/Kirk Session) as to what information
was recorded. Peterhead Parish seems particularly "guilty" of not giving the
mother's name even where no "shady details" applied. This was specially true the
further back you go.
I've also noticed that Records of the Episcopal Church are much more likely to
give you both Father & Mother, as well as Birth and Baptism dates.

As to the 3 children not being at home on the Census night, could it be that
they were staying over with grandparents or other family members on that night ?
I've encountered that several times in my researches.

Alex Ritchie.

Hi Colin & Alex
Thanks so much for your replies. They have satisfied my curiosity. It does
make it a little more difficult researching with only a fathers name. One more
challenge in finding my family.

Hi Betty,
I don't think the OPR would give you the parents names on a marriage, at least
not that early.
To hire the Longside OPR from the Mormon's would only cost $6 and it would tell
you for sure.
On it are;
baptisms 1621 - 1633, 1657 - 1819, 1820 - 1854
marriages 1657 - 1716, 1783 - 1819, 1820 - 1854
burials 1692 - 1723, 1820 - 1854

Good luck,
Catherine

Hi Betty,
I've searched on Ancestry.com and there's hundreds of Bruce's especially for
Peterhead where he and Grace married, but not as far back in date to your
Alexander and Grace.
I did find from the Commissariot of Aberdeen 1715-1800 records;
Alexander Bruce, Wright in Auchlin par. of Aberdour 5-12-1765
This is all that was written and it might not be your Alexander Bruce, but it's
around his time.
This is about all the help I can suggest and to look at the OPR.
Best wishes,
Catherine

With regards to your message below. Registrars were not employed to record
births deaths and marriages in Scotland till 1855. So they were not to blame
for not recording the mothers name in many of the NE Old Parish Records.
