Hello Friends: Today is a bitter sweet day for me as well. My grandfather who
was in WWII as a fighter pilot died on this day 15 years ago. Veterans day is
always special in my heart and today I went to my daughters school and they had
a celebration of the flag and the veterans. The kids invited vet's from our
town and I was amazed at all of the veterans in my daughter gymnasium. I got
choked up when a room full of Kindergartners to 3rd graders stood silent for 1
minute while we had a moment of silence. What a wonderful world we live in.
Thank you to all of the Veterans out there!!!

   Subject: [Peterhead] Remembrance Day 2004.

   Hello Friends:

I realize this is, in a way, off topic.

I attended the Rememberance Day Service in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada, today and thinking back over 60 years since my brother,
Gregor MacGregor Campbell died at the age of 20 years in Holland on October 09,
1944 I realized just how much we owe to our veterans. He was a member of the
Calgary Highlanders, a Canadian branch of the Argyll Sutherland Highlanders.

I was only 8 years old when he was killed, however I do recall my mother
speaking of his visit to Peterhead and being able to spend some time with his
aunts and uncles (COWIEs). He had a camera with him however the pictures have
long since disappeared.

I trust you all were able to take a few moments to remember our men and women
who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and also those vets who
returned home to suffer unimaginable memories.

Unfortunately, the vets in our local veterans hospital could not attend the
service today as they have been in contact with the flu epidemic and actually a
couple of them have died as a result.

I am not ashamed to say there were tears in my eyes as I saw our "modern day
vets" in the march past -- home from Bosnia, Afghanistan and Haiti as well as
other parts of the world. The torch has been passed to these young men and
women - may they remember their comrades who have gone before them.

   Ed. Campbell

Hello a-huile-duine -

Snaps to the Kindergartners.
This year I was especially conscious of how little the rest of the world
seemed to care: at 11 o'clock, people went about their business even though
the radio was broadcasting the Remembrance Day Service from Canberra and
first the Last Post, then silence, then Reveille were all very obvious. And
these were NOT our much-maligned youth ...

Hi Everyone

I have a query I'm hoping SKS can help me with it?

On my husbands grandfathers Birth Certificate, (he was born in Peterhead in
1872) there is a Paternity Stamp.
It reads [SEE REG -COR?? ENTD - VOL 21-50 with PATERNITY in the middle]. Would
someone please be able tell me who I can apply to to access the information and
if possible a copy of it.

If you can help me it would be very much appreciated.

These are the names of the two Peterhead born soldiers that appear on
the first muster roll of the 92nd.(Gordon Highlanders)in 1794.
Unfortunately, it does not list place of residence when they joined
so that there may be Peterhead residing men on the list.

Name, age, height, occupation.

Robert Brook 21 5'6 1/2" Labourer
Francis Greig 23 5'7 1/2" Woolcomber

I hope this is of value to someone,

I have just returned from six weeks holiday and I was checking
through old postings to the Peterhead List. I came upon one from
Alison Kennedy regarding Robert Milne Allan.
I would have been the one who supplied this information as Robert and
Jeannie are my great grandparents.
Do you have a connection?
If so I'd love to hear from you.

I don't know whether or not anyone on the List can help with
information on a
couple named Robert Milne Allan & wife Jane (or Jeannie) Baird who
were married
7 June 1881 at 28 Kirk Street, Peterhead.

The couple's deaths are listed on the Peterhead Website, Robert died
1930 and
Jane or Jeannie (not Jessie as listed) died in 1919. I have the
details of both
of their deaths but as their deaths are later than most of the deaths
listed I
wondered who had submitted the information and if they had any
interest in this
family. Robert's father was unknown and his mother was a Mary Allan.
Grandparents were James Allan & Helen Milne.

Hi Everyone

I wonder if SKS could help me with my queries?

I've received information back on my husband's GGrandfather Alexander FRASER
as follows:-
In an action relating to the parentity of "Alexander Fraser ROBERTSON", it
makes the comment " against Alex. FRASER, tailor, Reunies Wynd, Aberdeen,
the Sherriff Court of Aberdeen & Kincardine on 28th Sept 1876, found that
the said child was the illegitimate child of the said Barbara ROBERTSON and
Alexander FRASER, at Peterhead 29th September 1876,"

Queries - Is there some where I can apply to to get a copy of the court
records?

Also where is Reunies Wynd? I've been unable to find it.

Many thanks
Sue

To all you lovely, helpful folks with N.E. Scottish ancestors,

A Happy and Peaceful New Year!

At last the What's In A Name website is ready for initial release
following a lot of redesign.

     http://www.whatsinaname.net/index.html

If you've not seen a pre-release version, now much changed,
this is what it's about. The site initially covers mainly older
Scottish Forenames. It includes:
meanings of names, in so far as they are known,
         synonyms [Elizabeth=Isobel, etc],
         some foreign & Gaelic equivalents,
         pet names [=nick-names],
         diminutives and abbreviations,
a few "significant" surnames, but not too many!
and notes from various sources, especially from
                 members of the Exchange groups.

We have already helped several family researchers to find
ancestors in Census and OPR indexes where pet names or
unusual abbreviations have been used, so we know it can help.

Thanks to everyone who has provided information and anecdotes.
We've tried to incorporate all of them, with acknowledgement, but
one or two of the earliest ones have slipped in. Sorry about that.

And special thanks to all who saw the pre-release version &
have helped us improve the appearance and content. There's
lots more to do but we do like a challenge. We wouldn't be
family genealogists otherwise.

Please have a look and let us know what you think. We'd really
like to know what anyone would want added. Anecdotes,
additions and corrections equally gratefully received.

Hope you all find in 2005 that irritating link that's eluded you for
ages!

Best wishes

Ray Hennessy
http://www.whatsinaname.net/index.html

PS: We drafted the above note before Christmas. Now our
thoughts and hopes are mainly with the people suffering the
terrible consequences of the tsunami in Asia and the families
of those tourists who are missing so far from home.

Just think, a tiny proportion of the amount spend globally
on armaments could provide immense relief. We can but
wish that the world will change to embracing all-inclusive
co-operative action.

In sadness, but always hoping for a better world.

                 Ray & Sheena
