Hi Linda [Adams] & Catherine [Cci]

Its a really valuable service you're doing putting Certificates & Census entries
in your posts.

Could I make a small request that you put surnames in CAPITALS? This would make
it so much easier to spot relevant entries.

Sorry I don't have any to offer.

For Ray Hennessey,

A very good suggestion, Ray, to capitalize relevant surnames. Unfortunately I'm
not a good listener as I have just sent a couple of Marriages to the list & felt
I would highlight the Surnames in Bold text rather than capitalize. The list
messages unfortunately won't forward Bold text. The next I send will be in
CAPITALS !

This list, like many other Yahoo groups, sends out only plain text.
This is done to ensure that the messages are not infected with a
virus. Plain text messages are also quite a lot smaller than
formatted ones, which is good for people who pay for email by volume.

The default setting in Outlook and Outlook Express is to send
formatted email, but it is easy to change the setting. The argument
against formatted email is set out here: ttp://arc.pasp.de/

Don

I am in new zealand and have found a branch of the family in
Pittsfield Mass.

Would all imigrants in the mid to late 1800 have come in through
Ellis Island, or is it possible that this family would have arrived
in Boston or some other nearby port.

I have no other information except that they would have been in the
stated in 1866 as the 1880 census shows a son of 14 born in Ma which
I assume is Massachutes (sorry about the spelling but I guess you
will know where I mean).

Many thanks

Hi, Noelene

I daresay there are others more knowledgeable than me (or with the nouse and
time to Google US abbreviations!) but it occurred to me that "Ma" might also
stand for Maryland?

Hi Noelene

Ellis Island didn't open until sometime in 1892 [see
http://www.ellisisland.org/genealogy/ellis_island.asp]. Prior to that
Immigrants passed through Castle Gardens, at the lower end of Manhattan Island.
I think it was the site of an old fort.

There are passenger lists for ships entering New York. You could try
http://immigrantships.net although I haven't searched the whole of this site.
The New York Arrivals lists are on subsidiary pages indexed at:
http://immigrantships.net/nycarrivals1_6.html
Some parts of this site are still being transcribed.

There don't seem to be very many ships listed in the early years of the 19th
century. I haven't been able to find an index to these passengers which has
meant searching on every ship's list as we have no idea when Sheena's
great-grandmother went or returned apart from it being in the decade 1871-1881.
No luck so far but we keep looking for new angles.

Good hunting.

For Linda Adam

Many, many thanks for the information below

The second marriage listed relates to my hubbie's Aunt Annie (Mair) marrying
Andrew Duthie - we didn't know the place and date of her marriage and she died
several years ago - so there was no-one handy to ask

Thanks again - keep up the good work

MA does stand for Massachusetts, MD is the shortened version for Maryland.
Also Pittsfield, MA is very near where I'm originally from. My great
grandparents cam from Peterhead prior to Ellis Island opening. I have not
found exactly how they got in, buy my grandmother suggested they came
through Canada - Nova Scotia. I believe that is highly possible and
especially those Scots that ended up in Massachusetts & Vermont. My great
grandfather Alexander Wilson Cordiner came to Vermont at the request of a
larget Marble quarry to recruited stone masons from Peterhead (Boddam) and
stone carvers from Italy. The small town of Barre, Vermont has a rich
history of Scots & Italians working in the marble industry.

You could try the National Archives site for Canada
www.genealogy.gc.ca/index_e.html
You'll find various info but to your subject, I'm of the understanding
that many immigrants landed in Canada via Montreal and the Maritime
provinces, then travelled by rail to their destination, some going to the
U.S. Check the site. The site has quite an extensive list of "passenger
lists" by date of arrival but unless you know an approximation of the
timeline, it could be a large task. I've just ordered the passenger arrival
list for 1910. Fortunately my grandmother specified a month of arrival in
her 1940 Registratioin papers, even though month wasn't asked for. The
lists aren't indexed so you can see time is needed for the searching.
Montreal wasn't open year-round because the St. Lawrence River was frozen,
so they entered through the Maritime provinces.

This is very interesting. My great grandmother's brother, Alexander (Sandy)
YOUNG went to Barre, Vermont - and his father Thomas Young was a stonemason
before he took up farming at Hill of Coldwells near Longhaven. Alexander's
older brother Thomas is listed as a stonecutter in the 1881 census and his
(A's) occupation with the LDS records a relative gave me is listed as
granite cutter! Brother Thomas died in Glasgow but his family went to
Canada so the plot thickens...

Thanks for this - if anyone having relatives in this area knows any more
I'd be interested to hear, although I'm in contact with Alexander's great
great grand daughter also.

My g,g grandmother was Issabella Allen married to James Ledingham . I
believe your grandfather John was one of her brothers from his first
wife. her father had 42 or 43 children , fathered children into his
late 60's . My grandmother was number 21 most were daughters. The
children were from 2 different wives .
Isabella died in childbirth, 3 months before she died one of her
sisters and one of her daughters died in a fire. There may have been
other broithers and sisters who died as well. I have photo copys of
some of the graves in the old kirk . What info do you need exactly ?
I was only able to trace this allen family back to Issabella's father
in the 1700's. I could find no records before then . I will check to
see if I can find the section for you in my records .

Keith Forbes MILNE
He appears in the 1841 Census as living in Errol Street, Peterhead.
He is shown as being married, 25 years ( born 1816?) and a merchant
seaman. He married Christian Brown in Peterhead on 29 Dec 1835. He
does not appear in either the 1851 or 1861 census but Christian is
recorded as being a "seaman's wife" Christian's father was:

Robert BROWN
Born 1778 in Cameron,Fife and married Christian (Kristy)
FAIRFUL on 7 Dec 1805 at Carnbee, Fife.

Any information regarding either of these gentlemen, their birth,
parents, and death details would be welcome.
