Hello Betty,

This is not Alex of course to whom you asked the question, but I was
unfamiliar with the term "lair" too . In the dictionary it has one or two
meanings but one is defined as a Scottish burial ground. The "Lair" that
Alex has written of is a plot of land bought I think by one or two families
and where their kin may be buried. For example I know that Lair A201 is a
plot bought by Hay and Ogston (seafaring friends I guess) and where for sure
my GG Grandmother Williamina Ogston nee Anderson is buried (aged 40). Now
Alex has sent that last message I know that Robert and Helen are in a Lair
close by at A200 also owned by the same pair of seafarers.

Good wishes from Pamela -------Original Message-------

Hi Alex-I am going to show my ignorance!! You have just sent the deah/burial
dates of Robert Ogston & Helen Dunbar. Does this mean they died & were
buried on the sme day? I don't really understand-what is a 'LAIR"?? Betty

For Betty Holmes :

Hi Betty,
The dates I gave for Robert Ogston & Helen Dunbar were
BURIAL DATES (which I copied from the Lair Registers for Peterhead Old
Cemetery). The Lair Registers were compiled sometime in the 1800s from the
gravediggers books and so post-dated many of the burials. But the information in
them is largely accurate...I have found a few discrepancies but, on the whole
they are very good records of Peterhead burials. The actual death dates would
only be 2 or 3 days prior to the burial dates, although these death dates might
be difficult to find for events prior to 1855.

As Pamela has said, a "Lair" is the plot of ground an
individual or family would have purchased for the purposes of burial of family
and sometimes friends. Long ago there did not seem to be much restriction on how
many people got buried in a Lair and, looking at the Peterhead Lair Register
books, some Lairs must have been really crammed full !!
Also in the Cemetery there is what is called "Common Ground"
where people who could not afford a family plot would get buried. They would
simply be assigned a Common Ground Lair by the gravediggers and would be sharing
a lair with whoever happened to be there already. But these burials too are all
recorded and referenced to a Lair Number.

                     Best
Regards................................................Alex Ritchie

Betty,

I just called my mother to ask her about the Sutherland connection. I knew
there was a story behind it. There is not a true family connection. My
mother's uncle was named John Sutherland Davidson. My mother told me that
her grandmother and Jimmy Sutherland's mother were great friends and when
her son was born she gave him the Sutherland middle name to honor her good
friend. James Sutherland was a noted haulage and bus operator and the
grandson of George Baird, 'The Laird of Peterhead" from the 1870's. I'm
still not sure of my connection to George Baird, but there is one. I have a
scan of an article about the George Baird from the Buchan Observer 1995
written by his grandson, the Rev. George Baird. James Sutherland is
mentioned in that article.

Hi Alex,
I found you information about Lair registers interesting. How do I look up
burials - can I do it on the net? OR at the Mormon Church records? In
particular, I think that an ancester of mine, Girzzel (Grace) MILNE (nee
Davidson), died around 1840,1841, but before the 1841 census because she
didn't appear then with the rest of the family. She had a daughter,
Christian born in1841 (my GGgrandmother). I haven't beenable to find her
deat recorded in Peterhead. Thanks for any help from you or anyone.
Regards, Barbara

hello group!
I have some census entries from 1881. They are all from Methlick
Aberdeen. The names are GARDEN, GRAY,DUNCAN,BEGG,IRVIN,MILNE,
FORBES,TAYLOR, SHEPHERD,ADAMS & MORRISON. Perhaps if anyone is
interested they should e-mail me privately. Sorry Wade, I know this
is not Peterhead but my antecedents are very much a mixture of both
cities and perhaps others are too.

Has anyone been investigating Peterhead school records? When I was a
head teacher in the UK I had to keep a log book. The School was old
and I had access to a mine of information from the old school logs.

Skyvia, Thank you for your reply. I asked my husband, who spent most of his
summer holidays in Petyerhead when young-he remembers Sutherland Buses and
Haulage trucks, but never heard any mention that they were "connected".
George Sutherland had a brother James b. July 3 1856, parents John
Sutherland & Jane Bain..
Does anyone on the list know anything of the Sutherland family.?
Children were, John 1850, Elizabeth1852, Jane 1853, James1856, David 1859,
Jessie 1861,
Isabella 1863, George 1865, William 1868, & Arthur 1872.

For Barbara :

                         Hi Barbara,
the Peterhead burial records are not
on the Internet. I researched them by making many visits to the Peterhead
Registrar's Office and noting down people I thought would be of interest to me.
I'm not aware of any other ways of doing it (unfortunately).
The Aberdeen & North-East Scotland FHS were meant to
release them on CD (for sale), but the project seems to have stalled for some
reason. I know personally the man who inputted ALL the data from the Peterhead
burial records (all cemeteries) to their database and he completed that around 2
years ago....so I don't know what the hold up is.

I guess you're maybe not in a position to visit
Peterhead and look up the records yourself ? If you are a member of this FHS
maybe you could e-mail them and ask what the status of the project is ? Or maybe
someone at the FHS could look up specific individuals for you (I know they do
have the records on their computers at their shop). They will make a small
charge for this...but nothing like the charge the Registrar at Peterhead now
makes for a visit.

                         Good Luck in your search........................Alex
Ritchie.

Hi Pamela,
I would love to have the census entries from Aberdeen that you mentioned.
My interest is mainly in MILNE names, but Morrison is an offshoot, and as I
as yet do not have many connections (parents names, childrens' marriages,
etc.) could I have the lot please? Thanks, Regards, Barbara

For Ed Campbell & other interested parties :

Hi Ed,
I live about 200 miles from Peterhead myself, but that's a lot
closer that you are !!
I have been relying on the information from the Aberdeen & North
East FHS (Quarterly magazine & their Web Site) to get the status of the Burial
Records CD(s). It just so happens that I know the man who did all the work for
them on the Peterhead records but, after he handed over his work to them, he had
no more influence on the project.
But if I hear anything of interest on this subject I'll certainly
post it on this forum. I do know that they have it on their PCs at the shop on
King Street (Aberdeen) but that doesn't help you and all the other folks who
live a long way from Scotland.

Hang in there guys, it'll happen some day !!

Hello Shona,

Bram Stoker was a regular visitor to Cruden Bay and Whinnyfold around
1900. He stayed at the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel in Cruden Bay, and at a
cottage called the 'Crooked Lum' in Whinnyfold. The cottage can
still be seen with its chimney at an angle.

Bram Stoker wrote a book called the 'Mystery of the Sea' which is
based in the Cruden Bay and Whinnyfold area. The book is out of print
now, but can be bought second hand on the internet.

Smuggling was rife along the coast between Collieston and Whinnyfold,
and also in Peterhead in the period 1740/1810. An insight into
smuggling can be got from a small book called 'From The Brig o'
Balgownie to The Bullers o' Buchan'. This book was
first published in 1890 and was reprinted in 1986 by Caledonian
Books, Collieston. I remember seeing some copies at the Aberdeen and
N E Scotland FHS at King Street in Aberdeen, about a year ago. A
relative of mine, Jeems Cormack, was a smuggler who plied his trade
at the Old Castle of Slains. about a mile north of Collieston.

There is supposed to be a book about smuggling called 'The Crooked
Mary' which is based on Peterhead. I have searched long and hard for
it, but with no luck. There was a lugger called 'The Crooked Meg'
which carried out smuggling off the North East coast, so I expect the
book was also based on this vessel.

Regards,
George.

For George Forman :

Hi George,
I was very interested in your note about smuggling and
particularly about the book called "Crooked Mary".

The last time I was over at the National Archives in
Edinburgh, I was researching a Court case from 1768 involving a seaman by the
name of George Buchan (a distant ancestor on my mother's side from the
Roanheads). This was a perjory case.
However, once I got to see the original documents, this case
was linked to a smuggling incident at Peterhead when the "Crooked Mary" of
Peterhead landed spirits, tea, coffee and soap avoiding payment of duties. If I
remember correctly the master's name was Ayre (or some name like that). It was
alleged that George Buchan had tried to guide the vessel in by using a light on
Stirling Hill (I believe there was an early lighthouse of sorts there anyway),
firstly sailing his father's boat into Boddam harbour. His father was named
Robert Buchan.
George Buchan eventually became a harbour pilot in
Peterhead. As well as being related to my family through the Martin line, his
daughter Margaret was the mother of the very successful whaling master George
Simpson.

I think it would be marvellous to see a copy of this book
should one ever come to light.

                     Best Regards............................Alex Ritchie.

Hello George,
thanks for the information you gave.It ties in with
what my late mother said about Bram Stoker. She always said that my
great grandfather had met Bram Stoker when he was in Cruden Bay and
had several conversations with him.
My great grandfather was Andrew Duthie who lived in Cruden Bay till
his death in 1927.

I would love to know where the house with the crooked lum is so that
next time I'm in the area I can search it out.

I had relatives in the Slains area and several are buried at
Colliston. They were fisher folk so who knows they were maybe into
smuggling as well!

I have already been looking for The Mystery of the Sea on the amazon
web site and have tracked it down.Just need to save up the pocket
money for a wee while before I purchase!

Next visit to the Aberdeen family history I will look for the other
book as well.

Best Wishes, Shona

I was very interested in the above message. We have tried a few times to
get information re my husband's grandfather [Charles Bruce, an
Ironmonger]who was a member of the Masonic lodge in Peterhead. How do we
contact them for this information? Betty.

Hi there,
Regarding Bram Stoker, he did not stay at the Kilmarnock Arms He stayed at
the Former Cruden Bay Hotel which was demolished around 1950's.

Hi there group from very warm (like an English Summer day) Spain.

My friend Jim Ogston has just alerted me to a privately published book by
Hylda Smith called I believe "The Remarkable Ogston Family." Sounds very
interesting. I have found two copies available from antiquarian
bookshops just by typing Remarkable Ogstons on GOOGLE. Thought Betty would
be interested at least.

Hello Karen,

Bram Stoker may well have stayed at the 'Cruden Bay Hotel' However
this hotel wasn't opened until March 1899. The Great North of
Scotland Railway opened a branch line from Ellon to Boddam in 1897
and the directors of the company subsequently saw an opportunity to
open a hotel at Cruden Bay.

Bram Stoker first came to Cruden Bay in 1893 and published the
book 'The Watter's Mou' in 1895 which was based in the Cruden area.
He could not have stayed at the 'Cruden Bay Hotel' during the period
1893 to 1898. I understand he stayed at the 'Kilmarnock Arms Hotel'.

Regards,

George.

Not so - he stayed at The Kilmarnock Arms and they have the register to prove
it.

Hi All,

I've just updated the Peterhead web page http://users.bigpond.net.au/phdgen/

Updated are: Births, Marriages and Deaths. 1874 Deaths is now complete. I have
on order the 1875 and 1881 Death films.

Strays link has been fixed.

New index of Seamen has been added to the Miscellaneous Records section.

Back is the search engine on the main page by Freefind.

If you have any PETERHEAD Birth, Death and Marriage certificates that do not
appear in the index, then I would appreciate either a copy or the details to add
to the index. I have quite a few certificates from Carolyn Morrisey that will
get added in the next update.

Regards, Wade
from Melbourne on Australia Day.

Hi Jim,

Just a correction for you. I haven't heard of Lody Street in Peterhead.

Helen and family are listed in Back Street (North Side), District 4, Page 13.
Both Williams are at sea, as listed in District 10, Page 11 for Backgate during
the 1841 Census.

Regards, Wade.

   Hello Group

I'm in need of some help finding the parents of Helen Chisholm.
Helen married William Wallace in Peterhead on 12-23-1823. In the
1841 census she is listed as a seamans wife and is living on Lody
St. Peterhead and her age is 45 (b: abt.1796). Listed on the census
with Helen are five children, Helen, Elspet, Susan, William and John.
