Would love to come in touch with someone who new my family Gammie, who lived
in Peterhead. My mother was Evelyn Gammie, her parents were James Bisset
Gammie and Margaret Gammie, nee Pennie. They lived in 18, Cairntrodlie,
Peterhead. Does somone know if this house still is there? There were four
children: Mabel, James, Evelyn and Hazel. They moved to Aberdeen about
1921-22. Also interested in my Pennie family - my great grandfather was
Alexander Pennie, I think he was a farmer who married Ann Robertson.

Some pictures from about 1915-1930 would also be nice to see.

My mother Evelyn married a Norwegian, so I live in Norway.

Best regards

HI list:
Sorry about this - I did find a Birnie family in Marischal Street
and of course, now I have lost/mislaid/deleted the file.

Would the person who so kindly sent in the URL for the partial 1851
census
please send it in again????

My local LDS FHC does not have the films and as it isn't my lines
(just doing it for somebody else) I don't feel like paying for it.
Thanks a lot - I think the Americans call this 'a senior moment' - some
excuse!
Rotten memory and getting worse.

Keep Smiling! :)

There is a good chance that the house is still there, but note that the
house numbers were changed in the 1950s. I would expect the house to be on
the right hand side going up the street and halfway between the start and
the first and only shop. However, some houses are off the main road and
could possibly have been demolished and made into gardens!

The shop is no longer there. The shop was closed and then torn down. It had
been robbed a few times and the last time it happened the Lady that worked there
was stabbed quite badly. The owner decided it was time to close it.

A boilyard was likely related to the whaling industry. Peterhead had a fleet
of boats which went to Greenland for a number of years in the 1800's to
catch whales and seals.

Hello Mary,
My ancestors did own some ships in Peterhead.

I guess some of them where whalers.

Many thanks...Martin.

Hi

Here's a clip from the book "The Peterhead Whalers, 1788 - 1893
Gavin Sutherland"

David

"John Hutchison and James Arbuthnot, made a last-minute bid to save their
investment by suggesting the ship be put in the hands of a local, perhaps
more diligent, skipper and crew. Sandy Geary, a sailor’s son from the old
Ronheads, was promoted to captain on the recommendation of his shipmates and
brought a sudden change of fortune to the ship. On her first trip under
Geary the Robert took eight whales and brought home more than seventy tons
of oil (worth £2,000 — a fortune in 1798). Raw whale blubber was processed
into oil by boiling or ‘trying’ and for this purpose the captain and owners
of the Robert bought land on the south side of Keith Inch island at
Peterhead and converted existing buildings into a boilyard — the North
East’s first oil refinery. Soon after the turn of the century the Robert was
replaced by the Hope, again under Geary, and the Enterprise, under William
Volum, joined her company."

For Martin Skelton :
Martin, the Boil Yards were where they "boiled
down" the whale carcasses to run off the oil etc. There were several in
Peterhead at the height of the whaling. I can remember the remnants of one at
Shiprow over on Keith Inch which people always referred to as the "blubber box".
Apparently there was quite a smell around the town when that boiling process was
taking place !!.
George Skelton's Boil Yard was on Castle Street over on Keith
Inch. It was sometimes known as the Peterhead Whale Fishing Company.

There are no traces left now of any of these boil yards since
Keith Inch was "re-developed" for the Oil Industry needs.

Hi,

I've just joined the group. I am researching, among others, the
Cumming family who came from Peterhead and Longside.

James Cumming, 1857 - 1900, married to Mary Brown, has steam mill
proprieter on his death certificate. As the rest of the family were
all farmers, I am curious to know how he came to own the mill.
He died as a result of a burn to his scalp, and I wonder if this was
due to an accident at the mill.

Does anyone know about a steam mill in Mintlaw, Longside, or
surrounding areas?

Thanks,
Janice

Hi Folks,

I know I've been quiet on the list, sorry but I haven't had a chance to answer
all your emails to me for census and certificate look ups. Please be a little
more patient with me as I'm going on holiday for a couple of weeks to sunny
Western Oz and Bali.

When I come back I have updates to the web pages with 1856 marriages, 1874
deaths and fix the strays broken link.

Welcome to all the new members who have joined in the last few months, we are
now over 200 and it's great seeing a helpful and sharing group.

Happy Hunting,

Hi Fiona,

I haven't come across any Jane. It didn't tend to be a family
name. Also dates aren't right, mine are 1820's and then 1860's.
Other names that I have come across that were connected with the
Cumming's were Baigrie, Farquhar, Brown and Mitchell, if these names
help.

Does anyone else have any information on any of these names? Helen
Cumming married John Farquhar, children Helen 1886, John 1883, James
1892, Lizzie Ann 1893, Mary Bella 1895, Maggie 1896, Frances Alice
1897. Elizabeth Cumming married Joseph Baigrie, children Georgina
1890 and Edith 1893.

I have 2 John Ritchie's (father & son) in my family tree, John
Ritchie _- no birth date, but he married Ann Taylor 26 June 1843 in
Pitsligo. They had 10 children, was born 18 December 1857, my GG

I noted you have the THOM surname on your list.

If you come across an Ann Thom ( c 1810-2/9/1886) born and died at
St. Fergus, with her parents being James Thom ( 1784-1872 ) and
Isabella Chalmers ( 1788-1870 ) then I can provide further data on
both of these lines ( Thom back another 2 generations and on one
side of the Chalmers ancestry back another 3-4 generations to the
mid 17th century in Stromness Orkney )

Ann Thom ( c 1810-2/9/1886 ) is one of my Great Great
grandmothers, marrying James Lyon in 1848 at St. Fergus and
having three children, James Lyon (1851 -1938), George Chalmers
Lyon (1849 - ? ) and Ann ( 1855 - 1860 ).

Hope to hear from you if a link is found.

For Shona :

Hi Shona,
Robert Ritchie (who married Janet Reid) is also MY
great-great-grandfather. He was born 24Nov1835 in Inverallochy and his parents
were James Ritchie & Christian Duthie. James Ritchie's parents were John Ritchie
& Margaret Duthie (they were all from Inverallochy, although James & Christian
moved to Burnhaven then Peterhead).
Robert Ritchie's son (Alexander) was my great-grandfather,
and his son Alexander Ritchie my grandfather...and...his son Alexander Ritchie

As you say, Janet (or Jessie) Reid who married Robert
Ritchie, her parents were William Reid and May Strachan. May died in 1841 and
William then married a Jane Foreman. William's parents were James Reid (from
Thurso) & Margaret Williamson (from Slains Parish - probably from Collieston) -
the Reids connect into Wade Buchan's family tree also. In fact Wade gave me
quite a bit of information about them which I hadn't previously known.

I'll be very happy to share any information I have about the
Ritchies or Reids with you.
Where are you located ? Do you live in Peterhead ?

                     Best Regards....................Alex Ritchie

Hello Alex,
At long last I have made a connection to someone! It has
made my day.

Robert Ritchie's son John born 1879 was my grandfather. He married a
Maggie Bella Duthie of 3 Green Street Cruden Bay in 1908.They had 6
of a family,Jessie,Margaret,Elizabeth,Jessie,Andrew,Robert.The first
Jessie died in 1909 aged 9mnths.Maggie Bella died in 1923 and John
died in 1956.

The second Jessie was my mother. All my sisters and my brother were
born in the north.I was the only one born in Angus. My folks moved
down because there were better working conditios. My father was a
farm servant.

My mother used to say there were connections with the Caithness
area.I did not know it was the Reids I always thought it was
Ritchies she meant.Another piece of the puzzle fits!

I have strong connections with Peterhead and area.I visit about 4-5
times a year.My parents are buried in Ellon so every time we are in
the area we visit family.

I live in Forfar so it is only a 2 hour journey.

I would gladly share information with you also.

Very happy that you have made contact.

Kind Regards,
              Shona.

Apologies if I have sent this message twice as I hit the wrong key
at the first attempt!!!!

Hello Shona.
                         Thanks for the e-mail.
I never thought that any of the Ritchies had
anything to do with farming....I always thought they were exclusively
associated with the sea.
I live in Renfrewshire now, about 12 miles west of
Glasgow, but still go up to Peterhead fairly frequently to visit my mother.
Both my wife and I are from Peterhead so there's plently of relations to
visit.....as well as do some family history research of course.

                         Best Regards................Alex Ritchie

Hi Everyone
I've been enjoying this message board for awhile and made a good
deal of progress in my search for the Mitchell/Calder/Greig
families.I'm now looking for the family of George John Davidson Thom
brn April 17,1877 who married Elizabeth Mitchell Calder of Peterhead
circa 1900.Their 1st? child Elizabeth Calder Thom was born about 1901
in Peterhead as were 3 or four of their subsequent children.(The
family emmigrated to western Canada before 1917.)Where help is
needed re:George--Is there a birth record for him in Peterhead? If so
who were his parents? He would have been 3-4 years old 1881 census
and 13-14 1891 Census. Also,is there a marriage record for him and
Elizabeth? Thanks for any help anyone would be able to offer.
Sincerely, Valerie

Would any of you good folks have the address of the St.James #256 Masonic
lodge in Peterhead? Perhaps the name of the Grand Master? How 'bout the
Order of the Eastern Star #142?

I have some old stuff of my Mom and Dad that I'd like to send along to them.
