I am working on a thesis regarding the habits and migration patterns of
North-East Scottish travelling families.

I am particularly interested in any information on or about Peterhead families -
or any other north-east groups.

Any help gratefully received.

I may have taken a wrong turn in my Birnie Family research and would appreciate
any help a list member may be able to provide.

Alexander Birnie b. 1777 Peterhead d. 1855 Peterhead
In 1810 he married Fanny Henry b. 1775 d. 1861 Peterhead

Alexander's Death Cert. gave the following information:
Alexander Birnie, joiner; age 77; born Peterhead lived 77 years in district;
Parents Alexander Birnie, joiner (deceased) and Margaret Findlater (deceased);
Married to Fanny Henry;
Children; Catherine aet. 12, 1823 , Margaret aet. 41, 1858 , Alexander 39,
Fanny 36,
Jean 34 and May 33
Died January 15, 1855, Longate; Bronchitis 8 days; Buried Churchyard of
Peterhead; Informant, Alexander Birnie, son.
Will Probate: dated Jul 04, 1855, Aberdeen - Wright in Peterhead. The Will noted
William Abernethy, of the Coast Guard Service as the spouse of his daughter,
Jean (Birnie) Abernethy.

I had located a bap. of Jane / Jean Birnie, Apr 29, 1820, Phd. where only the
father, Alexander Birnie's name was shown. I felt Jane was the daughter of
Alexander and Fanny. The 1841 Peterhead Census showed Jane Birnie age 20 F.S.,
living on Longate Street with an Alexander Birnie, age 27 and spouse Maria, age
20. Can anyone suggest what F.S following Jane's name would mean?

LONGATE STREET
Alexander Birnie 27
Maria 22
Maria 3
James 2
Alexander 6 months
Jane 20 F.S.
Christian 35
Ann 11
Alexander 5
Betsey 2

In 1841 Alexander Birnie and Fanny also lived on Longate Street.

LONGATE STREET
Alexander Birnie 63
Faney 60
Alexander 26 cooper
Faney 23 shoe binder

Now the problem lies in the recent copies of death certificates I have obtained
for William Abernethy and Jane (Birnie) Abernethy.

Jane Abernethy died Feb. 01, 1875, #2 Castle Street, Phd age 54. Married to
William Abernethy, Coast Guard. Her parents are noted as Alexander Birnie,
Joiner, deceased and Fanny Birnie, MS Hay (not Henry or Hendry), deceased.
William Abernethy, husband, was the informant of Jane's death. Could he possibly
have given the incorrect Maiden Surname of his mother-in-law? (Jane also had a
sister Fanny Birnie who married Alexander Hay).
ref. 232 / 00 0030

William Abernethy's death cert., Dec. 11, 1894, Coast Guard (Naval Pension).
Married 1st to Jane Birnie and 2nd to Eliza Cook. His parents were James
Abernethy, Mason, deceased and Isabella Abernethy, ms Robertson, deceased. ref
232 / 00 0222

I had felt I was right on track until Jane's mother was noted as Fanny Hay on
the death cert. Sorry for the lengthy message but am eager for suggestions from
the list.

Regards,
Linda Adam

HI John
I don't know if the following is of any interest to you

Marriage of my g grandparents
25 th DEC 1871

GEORGE LEWIS married JEAN BUARTARLY at DINGWALL
Their profession was stated as HAWKERS

We have since found that the spelling of BUARTARLY was corrupted and should
have read BERTORELLI

George Lewis

- My g grandfather is also listed in various sources as hawker
and packman in the late 19th. Century. My grandmother told me that he
travelled the countryside selling threads, buttons, needles etc. A
hawker or packman(selling from a pack) was what we would call a
travelling salesman today.
When I was attending school in 1940's Peterhead there were at
least three tinker families in town. They were rag and bone or scrap
merchants. For obvious reasons I will not identify them.
The tinker or Gypsy clan in Scotland is identified as the
McPhees and today, many who bear that surname, are still on the road
in Scotland.

I am trying to trace the birth and parents of John Wilson who
married Elizabeth Farquhar in peterhead on 6 july 1858. I have
picked up from the Peterhead website (Marriages) that his father's
name was George, mothers maiden name is listed as Wilson. A recent
update to the family search site gives his mothers name as Mary.

The 1881 census shows John and Elizabeth and three daughters, ages
10, 12, 14 living at 16 Kirk Str. There was also 3 sons of the
union, John, Robert and George. The census lists John's birthplace
as peterhead and his age as 44. The peterhead website gives his
birth as 1836 this is ok by me. I am unable to pick up his birth in
peterhead and have come to 2 conclusions.

1. He was not born in Peterhead but moved there when very young and
did not know any better.

2. The birth was not "registerd /christened" with the church or
whatever for financial reasons as I picked up from previous
postings.

I have since serched the L D S site and picked up only 3 John
Wilson's with parents of George and Mary. One in Inverness,1838 one
in Edinburgh, also 1838 and one in South Leith, Midlothian 1836.

If someone with access to the 1851 census would be able to check out
if a George and Mary Wilson with a son John were in Peterhead and
check all their birth places. I would be grateful So that I can
confirm or deny his birthplace as peterhead, otherwise I would opt
for the South Leith as the names of sibling are more in line with
his children.

A second query I have is regarding the second son Robert. In the
IGI he is listed as only Robert Wilson, while some of the others
have other family names. Any records in New Zealand have him listed
as Robert Cowie Wilson, Cowie being his Maternal Grandmothers maiden
name. Is/was it common or not uncommon for family members to take a
family name on board for some reason or whim or were often all names
not recoreded. I am convinced I have the right people as at least
one of Roberts sons collected all the family names. Robert by way
of possibly keeping it all in the family married a Farquhar, whose
death registraton and cemetary records read as Cowie-Wilson,
Ausralian Born but of Peterhead and other Scotish parentage.

Any clues as to any of these puzzles would be much appreciated

Hi group, how are you.

On the Angus site, Christopher Fleet from the National Library of Scotland has
posted Ordnance Survey town plans of 1,900 sheets covering 62 towns.
The Peterhead one is there, 1868, the detail is amazing, well it is to me.
Have a look if you have'nt already seen it.

Hi,

Charlie Bruce the ironmonger's shop was in Chapel Street - near where Currys
is now. As I am in my 60's and can remember shopping there regularly for my
parents, the son must also have been Charles. I am sure there is a photo on the
site of the shop. If not I will try and get one ,

Should any of the home members be interested, Dr Lewis Mackie is
giving a talk on old Collieston on Tuesady 29th July in Collieston.
As many of the Collieston fishing links are also similar to those of
Peterhead - as are the familes- this should be a most interesting
talk. It is being done in conjunction with Collieston Gala running
next week - culminating on Sat 2nd August,

Margie

Hi Sheilagh, How wonderful to 'meet' you!
I am married to Ian Holmes, son of Isobel Bruce, sister
of your father Charles Bruce-or is he your grandfather? I had heard of you,
as we have had contact with Charles Bruce ,Ian's cousin.
The adress on this e-mail is from our daughter's, in Ontario Canada. We live
in Nova Scotia Canada, but are here as Anne is expecting her first child
anytime soon.
I have done the Bruce & Diverall Families back to late 1700s.
Ian's grandfather was Charles Bruce, he married Annie Hills and they had
Lillian,Charlotte, Isobel, Marjorie and Charles.
Charles Bruce was the son of Charles Bruce & Jeminia Diverall. Charles was
the son of John Bruce & Ann Cowie, who was the son of Charles or John Bruce
and Isabel Elrick.
I won't give anymore details as I won't get it right. I don't have all my
files with me! I think Anne may have some so I'll see what we can find here.
Ian & myself-Elizabeth Blyth Taylor [known as Betty] were married in
September 1961 and have 2 children. Andrew Ian b. 1962 and Anne Elizabeth b.
1964. Andrew has 3 children and as I said we are waiting for Anne's first!
That's probably enough for now and we look forward to hearing from you.
Betty & Ian
P.S. We know there was 'a rift' in the family-as there was in my own- we
have NO interest in these past events at all!

I shan't be able to attend, alas :-) But I'd be _very_ interested in
learning more about it. My grandmother bought 8 The Cliff in 1935,
and it passed out of our family when my sister and I sold it about 10
years ago.

Regards,

Don

Hello Marge,
My father was Charles Bruce as well as my grandfather - we left the
Peterhead area in 1960, Chapel Street now certainly rings a bell, the shop
seemed to be very deep with a fireplace showroom at the back. Many thanks
for the info.
Sheilagh
