I have a James Davidson, married to Barbara Gordon Diverall in 1890 in
Peterhead. Barbara was b. July 17 1865 to William Gordon Diverall &
Christian Johnson.   Betty

My Grandmother's maiden name was Helen Florence, born in Sth Australia to
Alexander and Isabella Florence.

I have found an Alexander living with James and Mary Florence and their family
in the 1841 census.  My thinking is perhaps Alexander is James' younger
brother/cousin as James was to young to be his father.

Alexander's father was also called James unfortunately his mother's name was not
required on the certificate.

I cannot find the ship he arrived on every trail seems to end at a brickwall.

James Florence was born in Auchterless parents James and Isabella Florence  
maiden name Moir.

Alexander F married in Sth Australia in 1852.  He is missing from the 1851
census of Peterhead.

I started this research back in 1999 then life fell on top of us and I am only
now getting back to serious research.  So if anyone can help me move on with
this family I will really appreciate it.....To make up for lost time would be
great.    I can share Alexander's life from 1852, with of course,the odd gap
etc, but certainly add to their tree of history.

Margie Cowe did a look up for me in the 1881 census, and my gg grandparents
and my ggg grandmother's names came up on the farms on which they were
working.
You have to provide the name and dates of birth and or death, then someone
could look for you.

I looked on the Old Scotland fiche records and Old Parochial Records and the
earliest date was 1843 and all the entries were from Peterhead alone.

Hi Catherine, again thanks for the amazing amount of information you
disseminate to members.  The Miln marriages list is interesting, but as you
said before, none of mine appeared.  IIs it possible that many people,
perhaps poor people, did not bother with official marriages?  Perhaps I'm
better off looking for deaths and births, especially of other children of
James MILNE and Grace WILLOX (Alexander's parents).   Your information is
keeping me interested anyway.  Bye Barbara.

Hi Barbara, thanks for your message.

I read on another site that people had to pay threepence to register a birth
long ago, or if the minister of the church was'nt too 'on the ball' so to speak
about chasing people up when a baby was born, or people living in out of the way
villages and farms, did'nt get a chance to get to town often, many births
especially were'nt registered.
Some of the OPR records from church's have been destroyed or neglected or just
faded from old age.  If you've ever seen the Peterhead OPR film it's very faded
or some pages just blanc at the beginning of the records.
There's some more Milne's to come, you might see something that can help you.

For information purposes - Nellfield Cemetery is located in Aberdeen (Great
Western Road) not in Peterhead as suggested.  West North Street also in
Aberdeen would probably have come under the Parish of St Nicholas.

I am trying to find info on my gg grandmother Elizabeth Ross.
I know that she was born in Ellon in 1847  and her parents were John
Ross and Christian Ross (m.s. Milne). She married William Massie
30th June 1866, Church of Savoch, Parish of New Deer.  She was 19 at
the time of marriage and lived in Ardland, Parish of Ellon. Both of
her parents were alive when she married. William and Elizabeth had
15 children and ended up living in Peterhead.  In 1881 they are on
the census as residing at 32 Keith Street Peterhead with 7 of their
children.
   My big question is when did Elizabeth Ross die???? I know that it
was after 1902 because she was still alive at the marriage of my
great grandfather Robert Alexander Massie on 3rd Jan 1902.  She was
a Widow by Nov 1896.

If anyone can help then please let me know as this is something I
have been trying to find out for ages.

I have the date of death for James Florence his wife was Mary Falconer.

The information I was given shows
James Florence year of birth 1800 year of death 1856.

Father name was James Florence and Mothers name Isabella Moir.

I think this may have come from the Peterhead website.....
James was born in Auchterless.

Armed with this information I rush to the LDS but cannot find a trace of this
marriage.   I have ordered the marriages for Auchterless but just wondered in
the meantime if any may have the above family members listed of perhaps missing
from their family tree.
In 1841 there was Alexander Florence staying with the family aged 24 making his
birth around the 1817.

I would like to check I have the correct parents down and that they are indeed
James and Isabella Florence near Moir.

Would the parents be named on the death certificate?
Look any help will be wonderful.

I don't believe the James Florence B: 1-15-1800 in Auchterless is the
one you are looking for. The LDS, IGI gives his parents as James
Florence and Ann Cruickshank. It also list his spouse as Margaret
Adams. However there are two other James Florences listed in the IGI.
James Florence B: 7-11-1802, Nonquhitter and James Florence B: 2-13-
1803, Rayne. Also the IGI does not list a marriage between Florence
and Moir. Of course this does not mean they were not married, as many
marriages were not recorded.
My connection to the Florence family is thru a marriage of Mary
Florence to Alexander Allan 2-17-1852. Do you have any information on
the other children of Florence and Falconer.
