Del,

I have also been looking for the current email address for Di Crosby. A
friend found an old message of hers on a message board and thought I
would be interested. I found the email address of a Di Crosby in NZ
through google, but that person did not reply.

Below is the old message board email I have.

Could your Daunhills be Downiehills? a farm - a few of the names are or
used to be farms around Peterhead - and Downiehills is very close to Dens
another farm.

Invernettie was beside the Lido - I think there was a quarry there - maybe
some of the others cwould verify this.
Auchtygall a farm beside Blackhills.Balmuir would be Balmoor and Hillock is
a street near North Street.

The spelling changes over the years

Margie

Hi Fiona, I have come across Stephens in Boddam in my research into a
William Gordon Diverall Bruce. I have Robert Stephen m. to Isabella
Bruce 7 November 1867 in Boddam.
My interest was in the name William Gordon Diverall.-who is in my
husband's mother's family. It is not a common name in Peterhead so I was
trying to find out out if there was a connection to my mother-in-laws
family--who were Bruce and Diverall of Peterhead.
If you think this Stephen is connected to you, I will look again at the
Stephen info I have. Betty.

While reading a book called A History of the County of Grey by
E.L.Marsh, I came across a few paragraphs about a Trout family
originally from Peterhead. The father and two sons owned a saw mill near
the town of Meaford (Ontario, Canada). No dates were mentioned, but this
would have been in the 1840's or '50's. The only Christian name
mentioned was that of Peter, one of the sons. I have the book on loan
for a few more days if anyone would like a look up.

If these deaths are from a film, I guess that means you had to type them
all into an email. That is very good of you. Thank you for being so
considerate. The names will go into the list archives and could be
useful to someone down the track too.

It is sad to see the high mortality rate of children and babies in the
1800's.

Not sure if someone else has already replied. This could be the Banns
(marriage proclamation), you can sometimes find it referenced three
times and they can also be in different parishes, recorded in the
grooms and brides parish.

For Alex (Dundee) :

Hello Alex,
I think your assumption was correct, that the Birnies were the
same ones in both the 1851 Census (Peterhead) and the 1881 Census (Dundee).
Robert Birnie married Eleanora Will on November 3rd.1844 (She
was a daughter of George Will, a joiner in Peterhead. Their son Robert was born
on August 21st.1846 and their daughter Eleanor born on July27th.1858 all in
Peterhead. So this would tie in with the ages of those on the 1881 Census.
In fact your notes were very helpful to me. A few weeks ago I
was trying to find a Death Record for Robert Birnie in Edinburgh but couldn't
find anything. I now realise that I should have been looking at Dundee rather
than Peterhead because, obviously, they moved to Dundee some time after 1858. I
guess Robert Birnie may well have been a whaling captain...hence the
Peterhead/Dundee connection.

                   All the best................................Alex Ritchie

Hi! Alex,
Really glad to have been of help it's not often I can, LOL
Here are a couple of things on Birnie as appear in Whaling Records

BIRNIE R. SIR CHARLES CAMPBELL PETERHEAD 1861
BIRNIE J. HANNIBAL PETERHEAD 1836
BIRNIE TAY DUNDEE 1865

I would guess Birnie R. And Birnie are the same person it may help
you further in pinning down dates.

Ann Greig d 19 April 1859, Errol Street, married to Alexander Greig,
blacksmith, aged 62, parents: Andrew lyon and Fanny Abernethy. The
death was notified by Francis Begrie, niece.

Can anyone help with the identity of Frances Begrie. There is a
Francis Birnie Begrie, widow of William Begrie living in Aberdeen in
1881 born circa 1833 Peterhead. She would appear to be Frances Birnie
from the births of her daughter Grace Begrie in Peterhead.

If this is the same Francis Begrie, who was her mother?

Thanks

Roy

Anyone have any information on the ship The Robert Hood around 1851
It would appear to be a Home Trade Vessel probably trading on the
East Coast

My gg grandfather was John Gilchrist Mitchell, who was a fish curer
of 21 King Street. (30/4/1818 - April/May 1896). His wife was Grace
Anderson b 1818 Abernethy and died about 1886. He had 7 sons and
four daughters.

I had been told that his father, who was drowned off the Scaurs of
Cruden, was William Mitchell who was the husband of Sarah Sangster.

But Alex Ritchie says "I am only aware of William Mitchell/Sarah
Sangster having a son George Mitchell, a son William D.Mitchell and
the above daughter Jannet." (Thanks Alex.) 3 of John the fishcurer's
children were called Sarah, William and George - this seems like a
bit of a coincidence.

Does anyone have any information about this other, possible child of
William's? When John was born in 1818, his family lived in the
Ronheads and were probably Episcopalians. Are that church's records
publicly available?

Are there any other descendants of John Mitchell posting to this
group?

Regards,

Iain Wright

Iain

I have some information on William Mitchell and Sarah Sangster. I
don't have a John Mitchell as a son but haven't followed this line. I
do however have another child to William and Sarah:

Sarah Mitchell baptised 24 May 1810 Aberdeen.

As John Mitchell was alive in 1881 in Peterhead, it should be
possible to check his death. I assume from your id that you live in
Edinburgh with access to Register House.
