Thanks for this Linda. I did register (why did I have to, if I am already
part of the group?) but it kept going round in circles - I would click on
Peterhead group and it would tell me to register or whatever - and again...
My husband who is a computer person was also helping and we just got
frustrated. Do other people have this trouble? I am only sharing this
because I'd like to see the photos, and even post some myself, and maybe
others are giving up too. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Elizabeth
Me too - I get the messages vie email, but tried this procedure - obviously
I don't speak enough American, as I clicked in so many places for a
verification code to be emailed, but got nothing. I already had a username
and password but they were used to no avail. Maybe Yahoo doesn't like
Aussies.

Hi,

This is a long shot but have hit a brick wall with your Leslie's at
present.
Was reading A History of Peterhead by Findlay and he says

Between 1821 and 1832 there were at least three firms of fishcurers
in Peterhead namely John and Alexander Leslie - the oldest and most
important firm.

Also In 1861 by petition of the Town Council presnted by Mr
Leslie,M.P the Government gave Peterhead a captured Russian gun.
Also bought a copy of The Mariners of Aberdeen and Northern Scotland
1600 - 1700 when I was in the FHS. It has
John Leslie master of the George of Aberdeen ex Bordeaux
Patrick Leslie jr skipper of the Christian of Aberdeeen
Peter Leslie skipper in Aberdeen
any interest? - and apart from the 1841 census with the names I have
now - any further suggestions of where to look?

Anyone know what a lax fisher would be? there are several referneces
to this in a book of mariners?

entry
John Craighead, lax fisher in Aberdeen 1696
John Anderson, lax fisher, Bridge of Don 1664.

There are white fishers red fishers and fishermen - have been able
to work out all the differences but don't know what a lax fisher
would be.
And there are seamen, mariners, masters, skippers, burgesses and
mariner burgesses- confusing somewhat!

An awful lot of fishermen absconded in 1683 from the service of Sir
William Keith of Ludquhairn (thats beside Longside just spelt
differently nowadays) Wonder what happened around that time- could
the Keiths have been on the wrong side again?

I too spent half an hour going around in circles on Yahoo groups. I
have had the same problem before with another Yahoo group I belong to.
By the time I had looked (unsuccessfully) through all the Frequently
Asked Questions, I didn't have the energy to send Yahoo an email for
help! :>) I'll try again later.

Thank you for putting the photos up on the website though. I appreciate
it and am really looking forward to seeing them.

Hello Margie;
Thanks for trying. I have to come to Peterhead some time soon and do some
research myself. I see that the ANEFHS is organizing a Monument Inscription
team for the Longside Cemetery for Saturday June 1st. and asking for
volunteers. I wish I could be there. As for Leslies in Peterhead, my great
grandfather, William Leslie and my grandfather William Leslie were Coopres,
and my grandfather's house was at 3 Roanheads, a block from the sea, and in
amoungst all the fish factories. Also, my gg grandfather James Rankin was a
sailor, and owned houses on Roanheads. So, there may well be a relationship
to all the Leslie sailors you found. I don't want to persue that line until
I can find more about the Longside Crofters.
By the way, the Clan Leslie is Gathering in my home town of Orillia,
Ontario, in July, and th Clan Chief, the 21st Earl of Rothes and the
Countess of Rothes will be here.
Regards
William Leslie

The red is the name given to a male salmon when it goes upstream to spawn, they
turn a red colour. Red is also used to name the salmon where the word salmon is
taboo.

Hi William,

I saw the message seeking volunteers for Longside and isn't it typical that's
the weekend I am in Edinburgh as I am going to the Gardening Show there.
However the FHS will need volunteers to type up the information so shall
volunteer for that!!

I use a voice recorder nowadays when I go round a cemetery - then sometimes
can't hear my own voice for the wind blowing!!

Please let me know when you are to be in Peterhead or anything I can do to
help with your arrangements,

Sylivia told me about your rally - it sounds exciting - no doubt I wil hear
all about it. Some of the Peterhead lot - Cowes - are going across to Toronto
for a family wedding in September - I should imagine Sylivia will be across
then as well,

Will still keep looking anytime I am in the FHS,

Good Luck,

Margie

Thanks Jim, I was aware of the superstition of mentioning red fish but was
unaware that they were called lax fishermen .

By the way we still have a salmon fishery here in Cruden Bay and it is still
run by one of the Bruce family,

Hello Margie & Bruce,
We are having a great emtomological discussion here. The word
lax was the term used for salmon from the late 15th to early 19th
centuries in the NE of Scotland. The word appears in Middle English
and is leax in Old English. Lax also appears in Old Norse. Correct me
Bruce, is lox (great with bagels and cream cheese here in Calgary) a
Yiddish word rather than a Hebrew word. The words are probably
Germanic in origin.

Thank you for that JIm - I have learned such a lot since I joined these
groups - another good one is in Scots - origins - there's an Aberdeen roots
one.
The Saltire caused much discussion there.

By the way Jim, I taught with Moira Grant - younger than I - I retired - she
is still teaching at Clerkhill. Also went to school with her cousin Charlie
Scott!

It was such a fine night tonight - had a wander around Longside Kirkyard. Not
a Leslie to be seen William. Not to say there isn't one as some of the stones
are illegible. The old cemetery there is in good condition as many tourists
go to see Jamie Fleeman's stone and the Rev Skinner's one.

What information have you that sends you to look in Longside William?
Could be buried in St Fergus or Old Deer if on the outskirts of Longside
depending on direction.

Hello Margie;
The records I have show my grandfather William Leslie born in Longside, my
gg grandfather James Leslie born in Longside, married in Longside and my ggg
grandgfather John Leslie a Crofter in Longside. I guess it's a longshot (ha)
that they may be burried in Longside. They do not show up anywhere else.
Thanks for doing the walk through the cemetery, I have been wanting to do
that. Is there only one cemetery directly associated with Longside?
Are there any living Leslies in Longside?
Regards
William Leslie

I've received some information on birth, marriages, deaths and census as it
relates to my paternal grandmother Mary Ann Dargie, her parents and a couple
of brothers. These names have cropped up. She was born in Peterhead and
came to Toronto Canada as a young woman as a domestic. It would appear from
the info that she was one of 10 children, 6 of whom were still living at
home in 1901. Her parents were George DARGIE and Isabella CALDER, married in
1881 Berrybrae, Lonmay. They moved to Peterhead shortly after. Isabella
CALDER, was the daughter of Isabella COWIE, and William CALDER (Reputed
Father). Witnesses at the DARGIE/CALDER marriage were William MILNE &
William CADGER. The children were all born in Peterhead, although one was
born in Longside. I would be interested in speaking with anyone researching
these names.

I apologize to those on the list who have seen some of the names before, but
I keep hoping someone will turn up who is following a similar line.

My brothers in law are coming for dinner on Saturday and I will definitely
test them both on whether lox is Yiddish or Hebrew....and I WILL get back
to you.

Incidentally , my father's sister Mary, immigrated to Calgary many years
ago and married a railroad man named Bill Begrie. They had two daughter
who, to the best of my knowledge, still live there. Is there any way you
could look into Bill Begrie's records and advise Margie, who is doing our
family tree?

In the interim, enjoy your lox, bagels, and cream cheese.

The William I'm referring to was a witness to an 1881 marriage. I'm not sure
how many Milne were in Peterhead in 1881. Your uncle could be the son of the
witness perhaps if his name was also william. The age of the groom was 33.
I'll keep your note on file as I investigate the family further. I don't
have a lot right now. I'm hoping passenger lists may give me other clues as
to whether she travelled with anyone. Thanks for your reply.

Well, I think I have the answer to the question that has had us all sitting
on the edges of our seats..........and I didn't get it from my Jewish
brothers-in-law but rather from my next door neighbour who used to live in
Germany and told me that "lachs" is German for salmon, ergo" lox" comes
from Yiddish.

There, it's done. I hope everyone sleeps better tonight.
