On my paternal grandmothers birth certificate, the place of birth is given as
Wellington Peterhead. Would someone know what Wellington is? Is it a farm,
hospital? This was back in 1885 so may be non-existant now. Thanks in advance.

Dear Wade, I'm really enjoying being on the mailing list. Can you help me where
to look for Merchants. My gggrandfather on the 1881 census was a retired
merchant in Peterhead. But I have searched and searched through every site I
can think of to find out about what kind of merchant he would be. Any help
would be great.
Thanks, Catherine in Australia.

If you are interetsed in buchan dialect you might think
about purchasing Mount Pleasant by Peter Buchan which
contains translations of doric to english.

Hello all,

New to the list and researching Charles BUCHAN (4 Feb 1888) and his
parents, Alexander Ritchie BUCHAN (1 Oct 1861) and Agnes FINDLAY (abt
1866). They were married (2 Apr 1887). All were born in Peterhead.

This is all I know for certain but I think A.R.BUCHAN's parents were
Alexander BUCHAN (abt 1831) and Jean/Jane Tait (1835 - Cairnbulg,
Rathen).

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

My maternal grandfather was born at30 Kirk Street Peterhead on
16/9/1901, his name was William Buchan Bennett, his parents were Ann
Wood and Frederick Bennett. My grandfather was always known as "Buff"
because he met Buffalo Bill when he was young. His father was known
as Yankee Fred, the man who painted sparrows because his hobby was
breeding canaries, he had a brother who was a sea captain and
possibly a relative who owned "Bennett's bar" in West Hartlepool.

My grandfather moved to Glasgow where he married Mary Connor. My
mother's maiden name was Jean Bennett, she married Jimmy Williamson
and had 5 children including 2 sets of twins.

Any information would be welcome and contact with any of the family
would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance, Marlene Graham.

I have just started researching my family history and have this
information for the site.
My grandmother Catherine Mary Forbes was born at 10 Seagate,
Peterhead on 7 May 1901. Her parents were George Forbes who I think
came from Aberdeen and Janet Smith who was from the Shetland Isles.
They had a large family and it seems that Catherine was the only one
born in Peterhead the rest were born in Shetland. I also know that
George Forbes was a cooper.
Tentative info also that I have is that George's parents were George
Forbes and Isabella Robertson but I have yet to verify this, and that
in 1881 George was living at 33 Longate, Peterhead with his wife, and
children Keith, George and Christina.
A fellow researcher has also sent me info from the IGI records of a
marriage on 7/10/1874 between a George Forbes and Isabella Milne
which further muddies the waters!

My maternal greatgrandfather, James Hubert Kinloch,
was, according to an obituary in an Ontario, Canada
newspaper, "in his 87th year and was born at
Peterhead, Scotland, his parents being the late James
M. Kinloch and his wife, the late Cynthia O'Hara."
My mother says, and I have seen one letter to
substantiate this, that he was a "remittance man",
that he squandered his money, that this fact was
reported back to his family in Scotland, and that he
was subsequently "cut off".
His wife was Effie Milligan, and he married before
1889 (probably 1888). i do not know when he emigrated
to Canada.
Any information on any of the abovementioned
individuals would be gratefully received.

Hi Anne,
Ref. your question about Elizabeth Birnie.(Married to William
Carnegie?).
Her parents were Charles Birnie (Ship's Captain)(Born 1835,
Died 1905) & Elizabeth Martin.(Born 1837, Died 1917)
I think they may have lived at 32 St.Mary Street.

Charles Birnie's parents were John Birnie (Butcher)(Born 1809,
died 1864) & Elspet Hall (Born 1807, Died 1897)
John Birnie was from the Parish of Cruden. Elspet Hall lived
in the village of Boddam (Peterhead Parish).

Elizabeth Martin's parents were John Martin (Shipmaster) &
Margaret Watt

The Martins link in directly to my Family Tree through my
mother's side of the family. THe Birnies and the Martins were very close and
there were other marriages between those families.
Let me know if you need any more information. I would be
pleased to hear what information you have on Elizabeth Birnie.

                   Best Regards...........................................Alex

Hi, I'm new to this mailing list. I have just re-started researching
my family history after a gap of about 8 years so am in a bit of a
muddle as to where I am.

My interest is mainly in the McGlashans from the Slains area.
Associated names are POLSON, MILNE, STEELE, OGSTON, ROBERTSON,
NICHOLSON. Once I get a bit more organised I will provide a rough
outline of relationships. Basically my g.g. grandfather was John
McGlashan, brewer and granite worker b. Slains 1815 to John McGlashan
and Barbara McDonald m. Jane Steele in 1837 in parish of Rathen. He
remarried after her death to his housekeeper, Ann Ogston, against the
wishes of his family, and emigrated to Napier, New Zealand in 1870
where he started a new branch of the McGlashan family. My aim is to
find the rest of the McGlashans. I have old letters from a number of
John's children and grandchildren which have enabled me to make sense
of quite a few of the family relationships. I have searched your
archives and came across the name of Marilyn Lacey who was also
researching this McGlashan family, but see there has been no posting
from her in a few years. I would like to make contact as it seems we
have a lot in common! Enough for now. I look forward to being a part
of your Peterhead group. (I've rambled on a bit, sorry!)

Regards, Ruth Brown (nee McGlashan) Sydney, Australia

Hi Joanne:
Thats a great thing to offer to look up things for others and I appreciate
it very much. I am looking for ROBERT WATSON. Born about 1890 to 1900.
The only thing that I know about him is that he was in Cove/Kilcreggan on
the Roseneath Peninsula in the year 1920/21. I have that information from
his sons birth certificate who was born December 19, 1921 in Cove. Rose
Cottage, Peaton, Cove, Scotland. I do not know if they owned land or not
because shortly after his son was born he immigrated to Canada. His wife
Jane Smith followed when the son Thomas was 3 years old. In Cove Robert was
supposed to have been the Manager of the "Gas Works"? I hope that you can
find something for me because I am getting very frustrated with Robert.
Robert had a brother Charles and 2 sisters Sarah and Mary "Polly". I
hope all this helps and what every you find will be most welcome and if you
cannot help that is OK as well. Have a wonderful weekend and hope to hear
something (anything) from you.

Again Sincere Thanks
Anne Watson
