Spurs creating of new index (long overdue):

Of Europe, Constitutions, and Christ
By Joe Eldred

Last week, Italian news agency ANSA reported that a draft of the European Union's proposed constitution does not mention God nor Europe's Christian roots. According to World Net Daily, the long-awaited preamble to the document used the words "spiritual", "religious" and "humanistic" to describe Europe's heritage and references traditions in Europe "nourished by the Greek and Roman civilizations," but makes no reference to God.

This will not be a shock to many Christians, who believe the establishment of the European Union is fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. For example, Image 1 is a European Union poster used to promote European unity. Modeled on Pieter Brueghel's famous 16th century painting "The Tower Of Babel", the poster shows the peoples of Europe rebuilding the tower that God destroyed in Genesis 11. Note the statement shown on the poster "Many Tongues One Voice." Note, also, that the normal European stars have been inverted to a pentagram (an occult symbol).

In December of 2000, the European Union opened its Parliament building (Image 2) in Strasbourg, France, modeled after Brueghel's painting. The adoption of the Euro and the images used on the coins did nothing to quell the fears of the Biblical scholars. For Revelations 17:7 says "And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her... (Image 3)

According to the report, the struggle between those who want God honored in the EU Constitution and those who do not, pretty closely equates to the divide between what the neo-cons have labeled “Old Europe” and “New Europe”. Ironically, the “New European” nations of Eastern Europe are insisting that old European Christianity be explicitly represented in the new Constitution. Among the more outspoken for the latter have been Roman Catholic Poles, including Pope John Paul II.

Interestingly, World Net Daily writes:

All current members are formally Christian states, but most make no reference to their Christian roots in their respective constitutions and keep church and state separate.

One wonders then what it is that makes them “formally Christian states.” Those of us who are Christians believe that Jesus Christ is Lord in all aspects of life, including civil government. Jesus Christ is, therefore, the Ruler of Nations, and should be explicitly confessed as such in any constitutional documents. The current news from Europe seems an appropriate time to examine our own Constitution and to consider the extent to which God is revered.

On the one hand, Jesus Christ is explicitly honored in the last sentence of Article VII, the Attestation Clause:

Done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth In Witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names....

But, while the scriptural presuppositions of the Framers, including their understanding of Natural Law and Natural Rights and their view of human nature are clearly evident in our Constitution, one can also see evidence of the same struggle between good and evil in our own Constitution, as we are witnessing in Europe today. In direct contradiction to the Attestation Clause, as well as in conflict with its own requirement of an oath from office holders, Article VI, Section 3 states:

...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States

And the Framers in the Preamble, declared “We The People” sovereign, rather than God. As we pray that the Poles will reject membership in the Godless European Union, let us also pray that Christian patriots in America will see fit to begin the process of explicitly confessing the King of kings as our Lord.
