She was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2005 for her portrayal of Allison Dubois, a role which has also garnered her much critical acclaim, as well as multiple award nominations, including a second Emmy nomination in 2007, 3 Golden Globe nominations, 3 Screen Actors Guild nominations, and multiple Satellite nominations. She was also awarded a CableAce award in 1993 for her portrayal of an abused, deaf epileptic girl in "Wildflower".
She has made a career out of shunning the typical Hollywood expectations, and forging her career on her own terms. Known for her quirky family and crooked smile, she has repeatedly rebuffed attempts to make her conform to Hollywood's expectations, such as losing weight for her role as Allison Dubois, a wife and mother of three.
She has two children, a son and a daughter, and has been married twice, to actors Nicholas Cage and Thomas Jane.
