This "Fourth" Vism (Nyanamoli) edition is certainly the best I've seen so
far, not only with the totally new digital typeset, but with footnotes
rather than troublesome endnotes.

However, there is a mystery about this new edition. I have a "Fifth" edition
(dated 1991) printed by Karunaratne & Son in Colombo. Its print is much
clearer than this 2010 ed. It follows the old format. I wonder if this is
the "lost" digital version mentioned in our edition here, which is given as
the 4th ed (2010). This is going to be confusing for the librarians. Anyway,
it remains that we have a more readable 2010 edition here.

What does "Himi" at the end of Buddhaghosa and Nyanamoli's names mean?

With metta,

Piya Tan

Thanks, Lennart,

Himi must be the indicative or titular form of the vocative hamudruvo, then.
Like "phra" in Thai.

Dear Dhamma friends,

Thank for sharing the Visuddhimagga-The Path of Purification, but I don't know
why I could not open it. The pages turns black as it notifies that the Adobe
Reader cannot be used to view PDF file...

Hi Nina,

The PDF download does work, but here is what I would suggest to eliminate any
blanks or spaces in the URL locator label. First, copy and then paste the entire
"http://what-buddha-said.net/library/pdfs/PathofPurification2011.pdf" into a new
web page URL label at the top of a web page in your browser. (You can copy and
paste the title from the previous line, without the quotes. Hit the Return key
on your keyboard and the PDF will download. Save the PDF as whatever you want to
call it and save the downloaded PDF file to a location that's easy to find
again. The downloads folder or desktop folder are both easy to find documents
in. Open with PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Reader, unless your browser opens the
downloaded PDF for you "automatically." The Visuddhimagga download is an English
translation with no accompanying Pali text.

I hope that this helps you with any problems that you may have experienced with
this particular downloadable file.

Metta,

Murukkan

Dear Yong Peng, Nina, Sayadej and friends,

Thank you Yong Peng for sharing this useful resource.

I downloaded the pdf file by right clicking at the link to the file and
choose 'save target as.' The downloaded pdf file looks perfect on both
"Adobe Reader X" and "STDU viewer."

Not sure whether this is applicable to you, but it may worth trying. Both
are free applications:

I'm very grateful and appreciative for all the hard work that went into
digitizing Vism.
Does anyone know if other versions of it are forthcoming, such as an
epub or a kindle friendly version? An HTML version would have been ideal
(chapter links, footnotes etc hyperlinked).

Does anyone know what advantage PDF offers for a 750 page book? No one
is going to print it out. An ebook version has the huge advantage of
being low eyestrain and readable outdoors in full sunlight. An HTML
version would be ideal for someone who is already very familiar with the
text and just consults it often as a reference.

How nice it would be to see this working with Digital Pali Reader.

Respected members of the group.

I would like to know more about the meaning of this expression:

udayatthagaaminiyaa paaaya samannaagato

It appears at AN 8:54 on paasampaada, I have seen it somwhere else but now I
cannot recollect properly.

It refers tothe udayabbayaaanna, or it refers to a reflective understanding of
impermanence in the world of concepts.

What the commentators said?

Thank you very much for your time and attention,

with metta,

N: The stage of insight realizing the arising and falling away of
dhammas is the first stage of Principal insight, Mahaa-vipassanaa
~naa.na. It realizes the arising and falling away of whatever reality
appears at the present moment. It is not mere thinking, and it is not
thinking in general of the impermanence of people and things in the
world. Insight is direct realisation, not thinking.
Gaamin: leading to. Endowed with pa~n~naa leading to rise and fall
(udayattha, as given in PED).

Dear friends,
Connie gave me another link to the Visuddhimagga book for download. I
used html. I still have to ask her how to download the whole book,
but at least I can open it chapter by chapter.

Thanks Nina for the explanation

The commentary to the Vitthatasutta (AN 3.002) says:

udayatthagaaminiyaa ti pa~ncanna.m khandhaana.m udayavayagaaminiyaa udaya~nca
vaya~nca pa.tivijjhitu.m samatthaaya. pa~n~naayaP samannaagato ti
vipassanaapa~n~naaya ceva maggapa~n~naaya ca sama"ngibhuuto.
"endowed with wisdom" means the state of being endowed with the wisdom of the
path and the wisdom  of insight. "Leading to rise and fall" means - which
(wisdom) is able to discern both rising and falling leading to the (discernment)
of rising and falling of the five aggregates.

Metta, Bryan

The phrase can also be found, for instance, in MN 53. In Ven.
~Naa.namoli & Ven. Bodhi's translation of the Majjhima Nikaaya
(1995/2001, p. 463, para. 17), the phrase and the related words are
translated as: "... he possesses wisdom regarding rise and
disappearance that is noble and penetrative [... ariyaaya
nibbedhikaaya]...." According to the associated end note (#561, p.
1255), the Majjhima Nikaaya A.t.thakathaa (MA) provides this analysis:

"This is the wisdom of insight and of the path, capable of penetrating
the rise and fall of the five aggregates. Path wisdom is called
'penetrative' (nibbedhikaa) because it pierces through and eradicates
the mass of greed, hate, and delusion; insight wisdom is called
penetrative because it pierces though them temporarily and because it
leads to penetration by the path."

Hope this helps. With metta,
Larry

N: Very good, enjoyed reading it. It takes a long way, though. First
the visesa lakkha.na have to be clearly known, naama being different
from ruupa, knowing their characteristics as they appear one at a
time more and more clearly, before their arising and falling away can
be penetrated.

Nina.
