Dear North Reading Friends - If you have been in the NR Post Office lately,
you may have noticed the little tree absolutely covered with tags for
children's gifts.  I noticed it and was really overwhelmed by the number,
and the fact that many were just looking for things like socks and
underwear.  So I did a little research.  These are not remote "inner-city"
children; these are our neighbors, right here in North Reading.  "There but
for the grace of God go I..."

I know this is rather last minute, but I want to encourage you to stop by
today or tomorrow and pick up a tag (they will be collecting unclaimed tags
tomorrow - Friday).  I've done several and it's easy - just find something
that you can pick up along with whatever other shopping you will be doing.
Put the unwrapped item in a bag (throw in some wrapping paper, too) and take
it back to the PO by next Tuesday, the 15th. That's it.

OR if you would like to help but don't have the time, tell me an amount you
would like to give and I WILL DO THE SHOPPING.  Just let me know by Friday.

I know we are all tapped this time of year, and maybe this year especially,
but if you can help with this it will make a real difference in the life of
someone who might be standing right next to you at the supermarket, or at a
school event, maybe even in a home on your street.

Happy holidays everyone.

Jane

Good Morning Pack 731:

What an awesome Pack Meeting last night. I want to extend a thank you to Jack
Regan leader of Dens 7 & 8 for planning and running our program last night.
Great Job! I think the kids were very impressed with our local hero
presentation by Captain Barry Galvin of the North Reading Fire department. I
think we all learned a few things as well and the boys were all very well
behaved.

Congratulation to all of the boys who earned their Bobcat badge and to their
parents and leaders for helping them take the first step on the path to the
Arrow of Light, the highest award you can receive in Cub Scouts. It is great to
see so much enthusiasm from the boys. Keep up the great work.

I also want to say thank you to all the boys for their work with the Scouting
for Food drive. Many of our neighbors will have a Thanksgiving this year
because of their efforts. Now that is a "Good Turn".

A reminder that our next pack meeting will be Friday December 18th. We will be
decorating Christmas trees to give to some families in our community in need who
otherwise would not be able to afford a Christmas tree this year. It is a great
evening in the spirit of Scouting and giving. You will not want to miss it.

Your feedback about our program is important to me and to our leaders. If there
are things you would like to see more of or less of please let us know. We want
the program to be fun, interesting and rewarding for the boys while learning
about the ideals of Scouting.

Lastly, parents please consider volunteering to help the pack. We have a great
group of leaders but we are always looking for more and there is always room for
more. If you are a little shy about being a leader there are also many behind
the scenes jobs that need to be filled. If you are interested please ask me or
anyone of our leaders how you can help. Make your boy proud of you by
volunteering for the Pack.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Yours In Scouting
Mike Gonthier

See you Fri!

Hello Pack 731:

I want to take a moment to thank Gail Tenney and our Scouts who attended the Vetrans Day ceremony on the Town Common.  Honoring our vetrans is the least we can do to acknowledge their service and sacrifice for our freedom.  Thank you to all who attended.

I want to thank Jack Regan for organizing and leading our trip to Battleship Cove this past weekend.  Despite the rain and the wet decks a great time was had by all.  We got a little taste of what life was like on board ship and we learned all about the fantastic history of this great battleship.  She faught in 35 engagments, received 11 battle stars and never lost a man during her 4 years and 4 months of active service during WWII.  We also had the privelge of meeting one of the vetrans who served on the ship when it was on active duty.  He shared some of his experiences and answered many great questions asked by the boys.  Thank you Jack for a great trip.

This Friday November 20th at 7:00pm is our monthly Pack meeting.  The theme of service continues with a local heros presentation from a member of the North Reading Fire Department.  You don't want to miss this one.  Also as a reminder if you collected food during the Scouting for Food Drive please bring it to the Pack Meeting.

I look forward to seeing you all on Friday.

“For Home And Country”, a documentary film that revolves around accounts given by five North Reading residents who are veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Iraq, was written by Nancy Parsons and filmed by Ron Carbone of North Reading Cable Access and Media. It includes local footage and music by the Senior Echoes Chorus.

As I had a bit part as the narrator of this film, I had the honor of attending its debut screening this past Sunday with the featured veterans, introductory greetings from local and state politicians, and all due and appropriate fanfare. It was very moving. Well worth the watch. The perfect family flick for Veteran's day/week!!

You can see the film locally this week on Comcast channel #10 or Verizon channel #26 on Wednesday 11/11 at 1:30 PM or 6:00 PM, Thursday 11/12 at 3:30 PM, Friday 11/13 at 6:30 PM, Saturday 11/14 at 1:30 PM, or Sunday 11/15 at 7:30 AM.

Good Day Pack 731:

In case you are short on ideas for your daily "good turn", just a reminder that
today is Scouting for food day. You should have received flyers from your Den
leader to use to collect the food.

If you did not receive a door hanger flyer please see the attached. If you
chose to use this please make sure you enter Pack 731 on the Flyer before you
print it.

If you have not done Scouting for food before, here is how it works. On
Saturday November 7th you go door to door and place a flyer on the door or in
the mailbox. The next Saturday November 14th you go around to the houses you
dropped off a flyer and look for a bag of food to pick up. You will then bring
in the bags of food you collected to the Pack meeting on Friday November 20th.

The boys should be in uniform when they go out and the should be accompanied by
a parent or adult.

The food we collect will go to the North Reading Food Pantry.

So lets do our good turn today and see what we can collect for food.

Yours in Scouting
Michael Gonthier

Sorry folks, :( but due to predicted weather conditions, the decision has been made to cancel the Sudden Pond overnight this weekend.  Unfortunately, the event will not be re-scheduled due to the lateness of the season.
Checks have not been cashed. All checks/cash will be returned at the November pack meeting by our treasurer, Paul Sanger.
The November Pack meeting will take place on Friday, Novemeber 20th at 7pm at the Masonic Temple on Park Street.  The Bobcat Ceremony (for all new boys) will occur at this meeting. All new boys should discuss Bobcat requirements with their leaders.
More details to follow about the evening's program.
Bottle Rockets
Please hold onto them, we are investigating alternative dates for bottle rocket launching.
The December Pack meeting is scheduled for Friday, December 11th at 7 pm at the Masonic Temple on Park Street.

Hello Pack 731:

We have 24 spots left for Battleship Cove on Saturday November 14th. If you
would like to go please email Jack Regan at jsregan1@.... We need to get
final numbers into to Battleship cove by this coming Monday.

The cost is $55 per adult and $35 per cub and includes the overnight plus three
meals. Please make your checks out to Pack 731 and mail them to Gail Tenney 12

If you would like to attend with your son but cannot afford the cost of the trip

corn sales and other fund raising to be able to do this.

So all aboard for the USS Massachusetts. I hope to see you there. If you have

Hello Pack 731 -- quick note from your popcorn kernel,

As of today, we have one Cub -- Ben Anderson -- who gets to pelt me with a water balloon this winter during one of our cold & snowy pack meetings. Ben filled up his sheet last week. He also made it in time to get a marshmallow gun.

REMINDER:  Your forms are due to your Den leader THURSDAY NOVEMBER 5TH -- Please remember to collect $$ for your popcorn sales up-front and pay your Den leader (Check to Pack 731). If you prefer, you can drop off your form to me and pay me.

The popcorn will be delivered the week before Thanksgiving.

Keep selling, and don't forget to give a blank form for your parents to take to work!

Yours In Scouting,

John Barrette

Hi Pack 731 -- this is your Popcorn Kernel,

Thanks for your enthusiasm at the Pack Meeting. A couple Popcorn Notes for all:

1. Please remember to collect your $$ upon your sale -- cash or check made out to "Pack 731".

2. We have Show & Sell dates coming up at Stop & Shop and Wal Mart. We are looking for a minimum of 2, maximum of 4, Cubs for each hour slot. Let me and/or your Den Leaders know what time slot you would like. Any popcorn sold during the Show & Sells will be divided up for credit among those Cubs who donated their time. The Show & Sell roster is attached (one in Excel, one in Word).

3. I do not currently have extra order forms but will get some this week.

Thanks for your support to make this "one and only" Pack 731 fundraiser be a big success!

If you haven't already, you will be hearing from your Den Leaders shortly about your Den meeting schedules.

Our next pack meeting is Friday October 16th and the theme is Jungle Safari. So look forward to a wild time! and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Yours In Scouting,
Mike Gonthier

Due to a weather forecast that seems to indicate that we could hold a Raingutter Regatta in the roadways, the leaders of Pack 729 and 731 have decided to postpone the Fall Camping trip until the weekend of October 24-25. If you had signed up for this weekend and can't make the later weekend, let us know and your money will be refunded.

Stay Dry!

Halloween

At Camp Massasoit

Saturday October 24  10am to Dark

Or Sleep over if you Dare

At Camp Massasoit in Plymouth MA.

Come to the Camp Massasoit Halloween Party for a full day of fun and surprises. Start your day off by decorating a pumpkin and entering it into the Pumpkin judging contest. Try your luck at Ghost Archery. Shoot the eyes out of a pumpkin at the BB range and win a prize. Enter in the costume parade, prizes given for best costume, most scariest and most original. There will be all kinds of events during the day such as eating a donut off a string. In every area you will have a chance to win prizes as well as get trick or treat candy. The price includes both lunch and dinner. Dinner is a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. After dinner there Ghost stories as well as a Ghost Walk through the woods. The day is ended by a spooky campfire (about 7pm.). For those sleeping over there is a movie and more snacks.

Who Can Attend?
The whole family. The only requirement is one member of the family has to be registered with the Scouts. This makes a great Den or Pack event.

Cost?
$25 for kids and $10 for adults for the day. If you would like to stay over in a cabin or a tent the cost is $30 for kids and $15 for Adults this includes the movie and snacks as well as our famous Camp Massasoit breakfast.

Costumes?
Everyone is encouraged to be in costume for the parade which is held right after lunch. We break the group into age groups so everyone gets a chance to win a prize even mom and dad.

All participants must register online; however, users can choose to pay online or by mail.

The person who was in charge of the Applefest stopped by our table at Stop & Shop today, and after buying some popcorn expressed her gratitude for the all the help from the Scouts - she said it made her life so much easier, from setup with the Boys Scouts through breakdown with Pack 731. To all those who helped - You made some folks very happy to know there are such great young people in North Reading!

Hello Pack 731:

As of right now Pack 731 has 2 families signed up.

If you are planning to attend the Sudden Pond Camp out this weekend can you
please email meat mikegonthier@... ASAP to let me know you are coming and
the number of people in your party. That way I can give a count to Pack 729 so
they have ample time to plan the food. You still need to get your check in to
the Lasdin's as requested in the attached form but this will help with the
planning.

If you are new to Scouting and think you might not be up for the overnight stay
or if you have other schedule conflicts, I encourage you to sign up and come for
the day on Saturday. Camp opens at noon and we have a great afternoon of
activities planned, including arts & crafts, rain gutter boat regatta, scavenger
hunts, fishing, and the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary will be joining us to
provide a presentation on “Nocturnal Animals” from 4-5 pm followed by dinner
and a camp fire with skits and other great entertainment. Siblings of all ages
are welcome. This is what scouting is all about, friends, families, fun and the
outdoors.

I hope to see you all there, let's have a good Pack 731 showing.

Yours in Scouting
Mike Gonthier
